Me and my friend decided to come here because it's closer to ccsf than java and a lot more quieter than city cafe. I've only ordered coffee but the sandwiches that other people have ordered are really good. The owner is really nice and it's good that he hired someone else recently to help him out.

Some of their coffee mugs are really cute and their cake slices are huge and still moist.

I will review again once I order more food.

A disappointing drink for a even more disappointing day.

Ordered a small latte and at best it was lukewarm. It tasted a little odd and the guy that made it took forever to make it. Being a former barista this is not how its done. I like my coffee drinks hot and tasty. No, thanks. Never again.

This cafe had an amazing ambiance. It really felt like i was in a cafe.

People were inside on their laptops, reading books, socializing with one another, all while sipping on coffee or eating a coffee cake.

The bf and i usually come here for their carrot cake, which is amazingly divine. The staff is also very nice and helpful in helping us select a dish from their menu.

They do accept card, which is a plus in my book. Definitely coming back for more carrot cake :D.

Great coffee - house coffee tis made ahead, bt if you ask, they will steam it up for you and give you a nice refill.  Good service, clean, excellent prices.  Sponsoring the Ocean Avenue Film Festival again this year, featuring short films by local neighborhood artists on Friday, May 18th and Saturday, May 19th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.  Raffle, Awards for films of 10 min. or less, and of course, their excellent food!  What more could a local ask for?  Sure beats spending big bucks at the movie house, in my opinion.  And no, I'm not getting paid for putting in my two cents worth here.  Just really like these folks and think everyone needs to know what a great bunch they are.  The owner says he's going to have a new menu with the same low prices soon and possibly consumer-oriented coffee classes, so you cane learn how to tell whether that coffee you're going on about is really sustainable and pesticide free!

This place is really legit, it's a pretty big cafe and the girl at the register was very nice.

My friend and I each ordered a smoothie which the lady at the register recommended.

She had the chicken parmesan which had just the right amount of cheese on it and just well done (it also came with a side salad). I had the hot pastrami with swiss and avocado on french roll and it was amazing as well. We also had a slice of red velvet cake for dessert and we were so full afterwards that we had to go to Stonestown to walk it off. Food coma ftw!

The coffee is high quality, unfortunately this alone was not enough to salvage my dining experience. The service was terribly slow, and there were mistakes on my sandwich. Several people who came in after me received their food well before I did. It does not take 40 minutes to make a pastrami sandwich. I shall not return...

I went here to order a Monterrey jack, bacon, avocado, turkey sandwich for lunch. For some reason, it takes a while for them to make a sandwich. I don't know what they're doing but waiting over 15 minutes for a sandwich is plain wrong. Service here kind of sucks. There isn't a welcome atmosphere... it's more of a buy your food and leave.

The sandwich had a good amount of turkey deli cut meat. The quality and taste of the turkey were really nice. The avocado was not really fresh since it wasn't really soft and smooth. What they probably did was refrigerate the avocado or something. The bacon slices used were thick sliced bacon. The cheese was a bit slate... it felt like it sat a bit too long absorbing air. The bread was toasted and it seemed to be fresh.

Overall, I liked the sandwich, but the wait for it and service just sucks.

Rest in peace "grumpy" Italian man that always gives students 10% off.. You shall be missed.

This is possibly the best kept secret within all the nearby restaurants available at CCSF. All the food here is legit, seriously. They make it all fresh to order with a variety of sandwiches, pastas, rotisserie chickens, salads, burgers, desserts, pastries, and their specialty for coffee. They also serve breakfast (before 11AM). It's a very clean and quiet restaurant so it's great for studying. I recommend to check it out if you haven't already -- you will not be disappointed.

This is also a OUTSTANDING substitute from MickyD's across the block, seriously.. think QUALITY not QUANTITY. Your body will thank you for it.

The first time I went to Caffe D'Melanio Gourmet Coffee, it was bittersweet and a bit comical for lack of a better word.

I ordered the burger and fries special and showed the Italian owner my student ID for the 10% discount. He looked at me shocked and appalled and responded, "Come on, it's already a special." He paused, gathering himself. "Alright, I'll give it to you."

At that moment, I was like, this guy..., okay, if this burger isn't the best burger I have ever eaten, I'm never coming back. Moments later, FML! The burger was AMAZZZZZZING.

First of all, I am a huge sucker for good bread, so their toasted sesame seed bun was a big hit on me. their shoestring fries nice and crispy and while the patty was not the best patty i have ever eaten, it was better than most places. The burger and fries took some time to come out, but it was well worth the wait.

Breakfast... Where to go? I've never ventured around my place for breakfast before because it's like the easiest meal of the day to prepare at home. However, today was different when I had a guest in tow. We stumbled upon this little cafe and thought it was cute.

Walking in, the space was bright and airy, with high ceilings and warm but clean decor. We ordered at the counter: one cheese omelette, two eggs over easy, one orange spice black tea, and one glass of milk... All for a little under $17.

We took a seat at one of the small tables by the wall and our drinks were delivered soon after. My tea was quite tasty and piping hot!

One of the employees there then asked what kind of toast we wanted (we ordered wheat). About 5-10 minutes later, our food was served. My eggs were a little overbooked and it appeared like they really fried them up good - so well in fact, that the egg whites were a little hard to cut up (I had to use my knife!). The egg yolks were also slightly solidified... The potatoes that accompanied them were ok. Evenly cooked, but lacked flavor. The toast was nice and crisp and lightly buttered. My friends omelette was presented nicely but he said the cheese tastes weird... Like cheese whiz... I think it looked like Kraft American cheese singles.

Anyways, we ate up our breakfast and headed out the door with a polite thank you from the employees who were movie tables around.

Cute place, nice service, okay food. I'll probably try some of the other coffee shops around here instead.

Great value for money.  Excellent pastas and friendly staff in a warm, large inviting room full of locals and regulars.  My casual business meeting went perfectly, and we all agreed we'd come back soon.

One very important note for all those who might be put off by earlier reviews of a "grumpy" owner...  The gentleman who has owned the place apparently just passed away.  His charming, able and very professional partner Laurie Martin is now managing the place and you know what?  She's a natural.

One dollar sign - great Italian eats - excellent coffees - friendly staff.  I'm looking forward to coming again - PLEASE BRING THEM YOUR BUSINESS SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.  LAURIE NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT.

Because even very skilled cafe managers can get a rough time from bankers and landlords if business drops off.  Don't delay - treat yourself to a plate of yummy pasta today!

Looking for a new place for lunch on the http://restaurant.com site I found this place.
A party of three we had ordered vegetarian lasagna, linguine  with prawns and beef minestrone and the warm lentil salad  Food was o.k. the linguine had only four prawns on it  The veg. lasagna was loaded with cheese and a few herbs - no overall outstanding flavor. The soup was salty and the warm lentil salad was flavorful. For desert we had the flan which was extremely rich in taste .

I don't really write reviews for the average place, but this place is absolutely amazing.

Since i go to city college right down the street it's extreme convenient. Open from early morning to 9 at night.

The owner has always had a great attitude with me. Granted I haven't seen many people work for him (so i can understand why some people may have seen a grumpier side at times). He's very dedicated to this place.

Early morning - you can get coffee and sandwiches. the sandwiches have an AMAZING bread which the owner toasts and he always uses fresh vegetables.  The coffee never taste burnt like it does at starbucks, etc...

Dinner - wine prices are average between 7.5 and 10 dollars a glass. around 30-50 a bottle. Dinner is on average $10-$18. Not a huge menu, but the pastas and salads he has available are AMAZING. He does the presentation himself *the fruits lined the plate and were FRESH*. the Desserts are absolutely to die for. I had the espresso pudding with a caramelized dressing and whipped cream. The owner gave helped me pair a few wines with my orders. Gave me suggestions and samples.

I've been coming here for about 2 years. Always had a great experience.

Owner offers free wifi - so i can come and order dinner and sit for a couple hours watching movies online.

    LOVE THIS PLACE

This place is freaking amazing. Me and my roommate were roaming ocean trying to find a place to eat and stumbled upon this glorious gem. We both got sandwiches and decided it was probably the best sandwich we have ever eaten. At one point, i didn't even realize my roommate left the table i was so enthralled in my damn sandwich. I got salami with gouda cheese on sourdough, and my roommate got the hot pastrami on rye bread with mustard and mayonnaise. Afterward, we got an almond mousse cake and costa rican coffee. THE perfect meal. On the ride home, like 30 minutes, that's all we could talk about. how amazing those sandwiches were. Definitely going back there...maybe tomorrow.

Nice local place. Food is good, coffee is GREAT. The owner is hilarious and friendly. We've been there for dinner a few times and tried a number of dishes. The alfredo sauce is great and has a homemade taste. Didn't love the short ribs - a little too tough compared to Medjool, the masters! Apparently they have live music, but we have always missed it.

    We will be back.

Really good cappaccino. Not easy to find on this side of town.
Breakfast has been muy bueno both times I have visited -- he stocks the good Louisiana hot sauce for your eggs, too. Spacious, free wifi, cool latin sounds and if you are not in a rush, all can be right with the world (for a little while  anyway).

I have been going to Caffe D' Melanio since it opened!  This is a local, neighborhood gem.  The owner is extremely friendly, and since college has given me a 10% discount (student discount).  He has continued to be indirectly supportive of my graduate school years by continuing to give me the discount.  My family has also paid for a private, catered event at the Caffe because we enjoy the food and owner/staff so much.  The event included live music!

My all time favorite item is the hot pastrami sandwich on rye bread, adding avocado.  As you can tell from other reviews, this is how I guage a good deli--how is their hot pastrami?  Well, this has got to be one of the best ones out there.  Plus, you don't have to travel too far to get it!  The Caffe is also a nice place to sit with friends, study, or watch a sports game.  My mom particularly loves the fettuccini alfredo, as it is creamy and the noodles are cooked just right.

The only con of going to this Caffe is that another neighborhood deli is neglected during lunchtime. I think I'll live, taking comort in the goodness that is a Caffe D' Melanio pastrami sandwich.  Add a banana, chocolate iced coffee, and I'm set!

It's hard to characterize Caffe D'Melanio.  It's more of a café than a coffee house though they have coffee roasters inside and the décor is random (piano in the corner, huge plants, framed photos of dancers, high ceilings).  Part of the space remind me of a thrift store.

The menu is eclectic and they seem to be making an effort to provide homemade items.  They have sandwiches (made w/ Boar's Head meat) and salads for lunch, baked goods, bagels and omelettes for breakfast.  They have smoothies made with fro-yo.  The cold case had homemade hummus and mudjara.   They serve dinner items.

The people who work here seem very friendly but maybe they're too nice.  They allowed one guy to bring his dog inside (no, he wasn't blind, so this is a violation of the health code).

I had a medium latte which looked like a small latte.  The flavor wasn't watery but it was bitter and overroasted.  The homemade hummus was very garlicky (a good thing) but also too salty.  The bagel was okay.

It was a nice place to work in the morning (w/ free wi-fi and electrical outlets) but then by lunch time they turned the music up way too loud that I had to get away.  The connection seemed slow.  The wooden chairs are hard (you may want to bring a cushion).

Caffe D'Melanio is one of the few places on Ocean Ave where you can buy and consume gourmet coffee. Named after Melanio an Argentinian who takes pride in the beans that are roasted and ground. Check out the Obama Kenyan Blend.

The cafe offers a 10% discount to students with school I.D. Breakfast items such as omelettes are served. Sandwiches, burgers, pastas, soups and salads are also prepared on premises.

There is free Wi-Fi for patrons at the large and spacious tables. Check out http://www.caffemelani... and see for yourself what a gem this place it.

And I thought that there was no haven for the sophisticated palate on Ocean Avenue.  WRONG!

My boyfriend and I have been wanting to try Caffe D'Melanio for months and they are just never open for dinner.  We finally got in.  Oh my goodness, what a treat!  It was worth the anticipation but I'm not going to wait that long between visits, again!  In fact, now we've been there twice.

Dinner last night was to die for!  We started with the veal appetizer, served much like carpaccio, with a delightful combination of flavors.  I had the Chateau Brilant  and Steve had the New York Steak.  We shared a well selected chianti and finished with cheesecake & espresso --they roast the coffee beans on-site.  Delicious!

The place was packed but we still only waited about ten minutes for our table.  The owner is absolutely  charming!  A live jazz quartet played in the front of the dining room.  So romantic!

Dinner for two with a bottle of wine, appetizers, dessert and espresso: $80.

And by the way, they are only open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays.

Great spot to catch up on reading or class assignments. They have these black leather couches that are reminiscent of Le Corbu's leather furnishings. I used to come here often since I had weird two hour time gaps between classes.
I would like to come back for dinner because I've heard they prepare the steak argentinian style. Yum! The banana mocha is a must try as is the veggie sandwich.
The owner is friendly and kind of reminds me of Bill Murray, which in my world is reason enough to go. Staff is also pleasant, overall very chill place.

I'm surprised with the negative reviews. Lots of hard to please yelpers!  I like this place a lot and used to go all the time when I was at city college and SFSU ages ago. I still go once in a while since it's in the hood.

The owner is friendly and Italian, in a good kind of way. He's always been really nice and makes conversation. Not because he has to, and not in a sleezy way either. They have really good sandwiches and other pastries/ food and offer discounts to students.  Pretty freaking cool!  They also serve dinner now and have live music. Never been, but it's always packed, so that's a good sign.

All the employees are friendly and they make really good coffee and espressos which is the bottom line....It's a nice neighborhood cafe and a great local small business. The kind of place I want to get my coffee from!

And trust me, I'm an elite :)

Breakfast -- try their omelet or the home made scone with a cup of house roasted coffee (I love their cherry mocha and the iced banana mocha mmm).

Lunch -- If you are a student form CCSF or SFSU this is a great place to stop by. Tasty sandwiches with home made mayos are just yummy!
Smoothies, coffee, Italian sodas and beer... you can get anything here.
The owner is from Argentina, so the decor looks intimidating, but its actually very casual. You even get a 10% discount with your student ID, even better.

Dinner-- Only open on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
It gets fancy with white table cloth and roses.
It may appear to be expensive, however for the taste and portion you get; nothing compared to all those restaurants in the city.
Its a little hole in the wall. Good place to take your date out.
Only thing is that there is nothing too much going on at night on Ocean avenue.
They serve wonderful pasta and roasted chicken.
When you feel like spending a lot, try their Argentinian wine Nandu and Auka (by the bottle). They are great also.
They also have live tango or Jazz band for dinner occasionally.
No dress code. Don't be scared and try this place!

Great coffee and awesome smoothies. This place is busy with City College students but slows down in the summer. They used to have seats outside but the city is being stingy with permits and if a patron leaves a chair out in the sidewalk the business will be fined.   Too bad, I'd like to see seats outside here again.

Ocean is a changing street and D'Melanio, the owner, is hoping for the good. He's optimistic about the changes and the interest businessed have in the area, it will help business.

He is trying to get people to come in for dinner. Their sandwiches are top notch and they have a kitchen that produces some smart and affordable dishes. Roasted chickens, salmon dishes, great starters also.

BYOB. No beer/wine license yet. There are a few liquer stores on the block and one across the street. Do not expect much, so bring it from home.

You feel like you are a tourist in D'Melanio's own cafee/restaurant. You wonder if you are still in the Bay Area because the staff is very nice and accomidating in an atmosphere that is simple and not designed. A decorator could do wonders with the place.

Walk in and out without spending a lot and feeling satiated.

After asking politely for an espresso, the older man who I'm guessing was the owner directed me to a table. When I noticed that the table cloth hadn't been changed and was dirty, I asked if
I could sit at another table. The place was practically empty, mind you. He responded "no, I have no table for an espresso". I immediately walked out of the cafe,

There goes any potential business that either myself or my friends would have given this place. And I'm a huge foodie too. I'm never coming back. Caffe D'Melanio, please treat all of your customers kindly.

I first discovered this place when I was a student at City College of San Francisco. I was cutting class (oops..) and by chance, my classmate and I decided to duck into this cafe to avoid the rain and enjoy a cup of coffee. We ended up sitting there for hours talking, and the roast of my coffee was PERFECT. The armoa.. oh man, it was great. The coffee beans are roasted in the cafe itself and you can see their large roasting machine. They also offer rotisserie chicken (which you can also see them roasting!) and have a pretty good lunch menu. I love love love love love love the pasta here!! A bunch of my friends showed up and one of them ordered pasta. I decided to try it and I ended up ordering it a few times. The fettucini is so addicting.

The man that owns the place is kind of scary looking but he's actually pretty nice.

Oh, the place is actually pretty big for a coffee shop on Ocean Avenue. The large windows make this place pretty well lit, and it doesn't really get too crowded, only when the line gets long.. And that's usually because of CCSF students trying to buy lunch.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The hot sandwhiches are good too!
I haven't been back in awhile. I think it's time I head down there..

This place sucks.  I work about a block away and decided to give it a try for lunch.  I tell my boyfriend to meet me there for lunch.  We order two salads with chicken and a soda.  $22.09...Okay so we are not cheap and do not mind spending any amount of money on food but for a ten dollar salad we are expecting something substantial.  THIS WAS NOT THE CASE with the salad.  We were delivered cut up lettuce, a few pieces of dry chicken, croutons from a box that were stale, and hardly any dressing.  I really wanted to love this place, but I just can't.  We actually went to McDonald's after and got a meal and were way more happy with fast food than that sorry place they call a restaurant.

I have been going to Caffe D Melanio since it opened!  He roasts his own coffee in house, and does a good amount of wholesale coffee business.  I've found the roasts to be good & consistent.  Start with the roast masters blend.

For breakfast, Yoko (the resident pastry chef) bakes scones & other goodies.  The scones are pretty much what a scone should be:  dry & flaky.  Good flavors, too.

Lunchtime sandwiches are thick and hearty.  Every sandwich I've tried has been good & filling.  You can also choose roast chicken (whole or half).  I love roast chicken, and Melanio's is great.

The close proximity to City College makes this place the perfect hangout for coffee & studying.

This place is a a diamond in the rough that is Ocean Avenue.

Excellent Coffee. The coffee is ground right in the shop and the owner is definitely a man of coffee. I once spoke to him, really nice guy. The staff is extremely nice and provide great service.

I had a burger here the other day, and as expected it was awesome. I look forward to coming here for dinner!

Oh yeah, and Free Wi-fi! Excellent for when im between classes at City College.

The coffee at this place is the best coffee you can get around ingleside, in my opinion. Ive had the sandwiches here and it is way better than the place near by.... Oh and the desserts... yum... the cheesecake bar and the banana pudding (more like bread pudding) are soooo good.

My boyfriend and I had lunch at this place, we sat at the table by the door where you can see people walking from window. If anyone gets a chance to look at the window and the ledge INSIDE the cafe there are dead bugs. we saw a big fly, which was dead of course and a couple of little dead bugs. this is the 3rd time we have seen these bugs... we come here almost every week, if i come there again i will take pics and hopefully yelp will let me post them here.

As much as I love the food in this cafe, i am starting to think they are really rude to the customers, at least the ones that are not middle aged white women/homeowners in the Ingleside neighborhood. I have seen him yell at a couple of early to late twenties customers for seating at the wrong table because they are drinking coffee??.... and one time I had really bad allergies and my bf went up to grab me tissues. The owner stopped him and said, "those are very expensive" and tried to hand him a dirty looking rag. He explains the tissues are for me because i needed to blow my nose and the owner just gave him this look like you should pay for those tissues next time.

I hate to bash this place because of how much i love the food but the service seems really shady. Another customer spilled some of her water on the table and the owner just handed her a dirty rag again, I HAVE NEVER SEEN AN OWNER hand a customer a RAG and TOLD THEM TO CLEAN UP... that just seems really rude.

sorry Melanio, i will have to drop the 4 star to 2 star.. i hate to do this, but it i have seen too much for me to not share it.

**this place does http://restaurant.com coupons, I got $35 of food for $10**
girl behind the cashier, super nice.
    cake, amazing.
    coffee, passable.
    chicken soup, amazing.
    spicy chicken sandwich, amazing.
this is now on my list of fav. spots in the city.
great atmosphere, it almost takes the role of a more "Panera" and less of a cafe feel since the meal is so extensive.

Yeah... A lot of people on yelp wrote about the dissatisfying attitude of the restaurant owner and I have to agree with them.  Maybe it is a culture difference.  He can be pretty blunt/rude.

The place seems cheap.  It tries to imitate a fancy restaurant but it's not.  There's basically no service.  You order. You pick up your food.  You clean up after yourself.  I don't understand why there's even a tip jar. It was 3 in the afternoon and the joint was absolutely empty.

My food, I asked for two items on the side of my medium rare burger.  I only got one side and a cooked burger.  I am not really picky but I feel that I should at least tell the Yelpers.  And hey, it's not like I went to a burger joint expecting the best burger fit to my liking, but I didn't even get the mushrooms I order =[.

I didn't even get my 10% discount.  He didn't even bother asking me if I were a student.  I guess it is conveniently located near CCSF.

The sandwiches are great but take waaaaayyyy to long to make. It was slow inside when me and my gf went (like 2 other people) and it took nearly 15 minutes to get one sandwich out and another 5 for the next one to get out.. thats 20 minutes for 2 sandwiches when it was slow with 3 people in the back cooking.. wow.

The prices were too high for such a simple sandwich and the service, albeit the guy was really nice, was a notch below my expectations for a place that looks so nice inside.

I probably won't go again, and if I need to get good coffee on Ocean i'll go to Java on Ocean 3 blocks down...

This cafe hosted my 10-year high school reunion.  The guy who runs the place has a strong personality and a good sense of humor.  "You only have Heineken and Sierra Nevada?" "What more do you need?"

The food there was great, but it was coffee that was a total surprise.  It's pretty, pretty, pretty good.

Honestly this is becoming one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco and that is saying a lot.

First and foremost, the food is excellent. I have only been there for dinner, but both times it was way more/better than I expected given its appearance as nothing more than an average coffee shop. I had the baby back ribs and a seafood platter and my wife had the flatiron steak and a pesto pasta dish, on separate occasions of course ; )

Thery now have a wine and beer license and we had an Argentinean Cabernet that was sublime.

The owner is very cool and the atmosphere is very chill and perfect for my statses anyway. Low on pretense, high on character.  There was a duet last time we went with a woman vocalist and a guitar player that performed some amazing jazz and blues that topped the experience off perfectly. Eclectic crowd of people too.

We are going back tonight because they are now grilling meat/steaks on Fridays and will have a Tango show. Can't wait.

Pick up some coffee on your way out. It is roasted on site and is delicious. My wife thinks it is a bit weak, but if you saw the battery acid that she likes to drink you would disregard her opinion.
