Super great place that is incredibly close to my apt - I'll definitely be frequenting this place. Really nice food with good portions and a fun atmosphere - reminds me of Enigma on Broadway and my college days - hooray for nostalgia!
anyway the skinny is - prices are good, food is good and atmosphere is pretty great - you can't really ask for much more in a local watering hole -

I understand that a large part of a dining experience is the atmosphere created by the host and wait staff, which is by trade usually charming and helpful. Occasionally one encounters an establishment that likes to turn this concept on its head; "The Elbow Room" is one example, though the jury is still out on whether that is really a working motif, but I digress. Generally speaking, unless advertised (Re: The Elbow Room), an antagonistic attitude is not expected, encouraged, or solicited from one's server. Caffe Barney was remiss from the get-go, as I found the staff entirely too impressed with themselves to find time to serve me with any level of respect or at the very least courtesy. I generally don't make a point of commenting about a server's attitude (I was a server for a number of years and understand that sometimes you catch us on an off day; we are all afforded them occasionally), but this level of disrespect was serving-staff wide. The disrespect I speak of was an overwhelmingly condescending attitude to the reasonable request for a coffee refill, or a question about substitution options on the omelette. In fact, the very initialization of service was only at our insistence.
The reason this restaurant earned two stars, however, was the food. It was good, but unfortunately could not erase the otherwise horrible experience. I understand that many feel the service was great, and I suppose I may not be the ideal clientele-base (I.E. not a Hipster), but I still expect to be treated like a guest and be afforded the same service as any ideal customer. My money is as good as anyone's -

Ended up here because the sushi place nearby happened to be closed. Luckily they had room for our group of 8 on such short notice (it's not a large place, and it was already crowded).
I got the chicken and cheddar quesadilla. It was delicious and crispy, so no complaints there. Our table got a pitcher of water, but we emptied it pretty quickly and it never got refilled, only taken away. Other than that, the service was fine.
I found the music to be a bit loud, so conversation was somewhat difficult.
As it seems they are known for their breakfast, I would be willing to come back and try that. -

Their pulled pork sandwich is second to none!
Awesome service too -

Stopped in here for a quick snack and had the chicken and cheddar quesadilla and a margarita. Both were quite good.
The margarita was a no-fuss tequila, triple sec, and lime juice and the quesadilla had plenty of cheese and chicken. That's all I ask for.
The best part of this place was the service. Super nice people willing to chat and answer questions. I felt like I was hanging out on my best friend's back porch. -

I'm definitely a breakfast/ brunch + shopping girl. So this morning, my friend and I decided to start our day off with Caffe Barney + South Granville.
Upon entering, there is a bar area to the right with some booths and more table seating in the back. The waitress originally seated us in the back where it was dark and kind of depressing so we asked to sit near the front windows to enjoy the sunlight.
I got the breakfast burrito which was absolutely DELICIOUS. I'm quite picky with my burritos (once again, the California girl in me loves her authentic mexican food & irreplaceable chipotle) so for me to really like this burrito means a lot. This is actually the first time I've LIKED any burrito in Vancouver! The texture of the tortilla was extra thick and seemed to have more substance than your regular tortilla... the edges were crispy and the taste was not corn-y at all. And I loved that the burrito cut nicely while I ate it and didn't lose it's shape and fall to pieces with my first knife jab.
It came with toast and breakfast potatoes and OMG I don't know how they fry or cook or what they add to these potatoes but gawd they are GOOD.
Most breakfast entrees are around ~$10. Service was good (I've read some bad reviews about their servers but maybe I got lucky?), food was great and love the location. Would come back again to try more! -

Cafe Barney is an excellent Value... just don't go there to watch TV (Or Canucks playoff games.. they only have one TV !)
If you do go to Cafe Barney go for the food... we had most excellent nachos (even though they ad no meat only $13!)
Their Hot chicken wings were superb (except no specials so $11) They make their own Hot sauce and it is applied to a nicely cooked wing.
Everyone raves about the breakfasts and I might make it back one day to try.
PS the grande Finale was the Blueberry Pie and Ice cream, I do not know if they bake it themselves but it was fabulous (These are the words of my co-eaters, I didn't have any because I am sweet enough ;) -

Do you realize they have brunch until 4pm EVEN ON WEEKDAYS??? Hells yes, that means on a Friday I can go out for lunch with co-workers and get an eggs benny if I want! AND I DID.
The place is nice, I like when restaurants have real art on the walls for sale. The service was attentive, and the atmosphere was really chill. Despite being pretty small it wasn't super busy over lunch and we easily got a table.
Our food arrived promptly, which is important when you're on lunch from work. One of my lunchmates got the chicken wrap which was HUGE and she said she really liked. My salmon eggs benny was delightful (just as it is at the place on Main street I often frequent) and everything was good.
The wine selection was decent and there are some good cocktails to choose from as well.
It isn't to die for, but I would certainly come here again. Full breakfast until 4pm! (!!!!) -

My go to spot in the neighbourhood. Breakfast is always great (their Huevos Rancheros is delicious) and dinner and drinks are always well done. Reasonably priced, great service and chill atmosphere.

Came back for brunch and was definitely very impressed. Same laid back atmosphere as last time, with less loud music and more coffee.
I had the smoked salmon, pesto and cheese omelette (I substituted mozzerella for cream cheese). It was huge, perfectly cooked and extremely tasty. It also came with a very generous portion of smoked salmon inside.
I substituted toast for a side salad for $1.50 but I didn't mind paying a bit extra because the salad, when it came, looked more like a full-size salad and I asked the server if there had been a mistake. Nope, turns out they are just generous on the side salad portions.
Service was fast and friendly too. Definitely looking forward to more brunches here!Listed in: Best Nachos

What a gem. Back patio weren't open yet, which is another good reason to return.
Great food, good beers, reasonable prices (no real specials though) and quaint and quiet-ish...
Shame about the name of the place though... -

Go after 11am to avoid the rush on Sunday mornings, and by all means order the Eggs Barney! Mmm smoked salmon, served until 4pm. The perfect brunch, and only around $10 too.
Caesar's aren't that fantastic, though. -

Don't go if you're hoping for humble, respectful service. We just walked in, got attitude and then walked out. I think the bartender thought he super cool, sadly. Two strikes, why do I bother? Stupid me. Bah, won't let me leave this rating star-less. Come on, Yelp!!!

Stopped in for a quick bite late in the lunch hour...despite our late arrival (1:45pm), most tables were full, and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves/their companions/or the food!
Nice variety of dishes: likewise, daily specials were quite nice. Cheerful, attentive service, no complaints there. Waitress took the time to check with kitchen for no nuts in the dishes (peanut allergy here!).
I had black prawns w/penne from the specials, my friend a massive Quesadilla....nice side salad that looked "meal-sized".
Didn't have room for dessert, so will have to return! -

I have been here numerous times for lunch, but was until my recent experience that I decided to write a review.
The food is tasty but the service can range from great to really awful. On my last visit I'd called in for take-out but the when I arrived to pick it up they'd completely forgotten about my order. So they offered me a free beer till my food would arrive! I was fine with the offer but it took an hour or so for my food to get ready! Considering that I'd called in half an hour before their busy lunch time, it was too long of a wait.
I'd recommend this place, for the rusty feel of the place and relatively cheap food in the South Granville area but then again nothing special! -

Cafe Barney's is #1 on my Brunch list, which says a lot since I am a brunch enthusiast. They have consistently amazing food. I especially suggest the Salmon, Pesto, Cream cheese omlette (my personal fave).
Some helpful notes:
- The food is DELICIOUS, the service is shit. You practically have to tackle the servers for a refill on anything, or even to ask for another fork, napkin, cream for the coffee, etc. It's part of it. If you want better service, go to the Main street location of Cafe Barney's (Main and 13th), WAY better service and less wait due to a bigger location.Listed in: Brunch

i wil give this place another shot, because i had a really bad experience my first time out. However i feel I might have been their on an 'off' day...
we waited forever outside on the deck for the server, as did everyone else. Then the orders will all messed up for the majority of tables, and my wife didn't get her order at all...lol...but anyway she did eventually.
i'll go again....and hopefully catch them when they are less busy or something... -
Review from Mark H.
Sandwich board. I think they should definitely get one so I don't walk completely past it again. The 'Caffe' bit is a little misleading, it really is a pub.
This place is pretty cozy with it's narrow design, several skylights, and a 'secret' patio in the back (which I didn't find out about until I paid my bill). Having never tried the famous Kobe Beef, I went with their Kobe burger with salad. The kobe had a distinct flavour compared to regular bovine.
I also sampled their blackened Cajun-style Ahi Tuna burger, now that was amazing. Perfectly seared and seasoned, it was one of the best burgers I've had. -

I went here for brunch and was immediately put off by this "cafe" actually being a full service bar. Maybe the night hours are better than the day but I just was not overwhelmed. My greatest joy in the culinary world is breakfast and I could eat it all day long so, naturally, I am constantly on the search for new breakfast joints to call my own. This one will not be making it on my "where to eat' list for Vancouver.
I think what initially turned me off was the quality of my cappuccino was mediocre at best. Yes. I get it. It's a bar. But still, I value a good cappuccino and this was not a good cappuccino. A bit too bitter, too wet, and the milk tasted a wee bit old which is never a good sign.
I ordered the traditional eggs Benny with ham and my friend got the salmon omlette. Neither of these was bad but neither really bowled us over and the meal was far from memorable. Notably, the hashbrowns could have been nice if they were warm and the ham was too thinly sliced for the ammount of hollandaise sauce that was smeared on top.
On a more positive note... I thought the service was quite good and its always fun to eat somewhere that a lot of people have gathered. Good people watching but not a great meal. The hunt for my "breakfast spot" continues. -

I don't know wether to give it 3 or 4 stars, but it was good! I took family here from out of town (California) and so they were excited to try some brunch.
The server was really accomodating (we had a 6 year old with us) and just overall good service. The food was pretty good and standard, nothing spectacular, but it's brunch and really all I wanted was an eggs benny and I totally had it. Yum! I'll be back. -

This place is really just a beer slinging operation, and they are certainly not known for their food, which is in fact quite greasy and disappointing.
Service is not overly great, rude at times, and brunch on the weekend is too loud. Worst breakfast potatoes in town. -

This place is mouth-wateringly delicious!
I went here on a weekday afternoon for brunch- and it was absolutely amazing... the portions are huge (definitely not finishable!) but you will definitely try your best to finish it!! I had a pesto tofu scramble and orange juice - yum!
The service is a little slow, and they don't really customize (i.e. i wanted egg whites only, but it wasn't possible), but it was still finger lickin' good! =)
I would definitely recommend this place for brunch! -
Review from kevin w.
We had brunch here on a monday around 10:30am. The food was good and surprisingly large portions for the price. I had the chorizo omelette for 9.50CAD and my wife had .. i forget now. But I remember that she added on a side of fruit and it was a really good fruit side. They had sliced strawberry's, pineapple and all the good fruits that you don't normally get with a side. The hashbrowns are more what i would call quartered potatos and they were really good. The toast was not too toasted and it came with what seamed like fresh strawberry jam...excellent.
The only weird thing was that they don't accept debit cards but they do accept credit cards. Also, when you walk up, you see a bar so we almost didnt go in because we thought it wasn't the right place. -

We stopped in to Caffe Barney this past weekend for lunch and a pint. The tables were packed with young hipsters and the walls were filled with art - I was immediately hopeful it was going to be a new fun spot for us to frequent!
The service was quite prompt and friendly, but unfortunately where the experience lacked was on the meal itself. Both of our dishes were sub par and kind of greasy. It's not to say it was inedible, it's just not likely we'll be raving to all our family and friends about how great it was.
I would probably recommend this place for beers and appys, but if you want an awesome brunch or lunch you might want to look somewhere else. -
Review from Renee C.
One of the things that make me feel at home in a city is having a 'local pub' that I can call home (in a totally positive-coping-mechanisms sort of way, not an alcoholic sort of way). For me, in this South Granville neighborhood in which I live, Barney's is it. And I'm pretty happy to call it 'home'.
I come here for breakfast quite often - even though that sometimes means waiting out the door - and in the evening to meet up with friends in a welcoming atmosphere. Most of the time that I go here I just really enjoy the music, the atmosphere, the art on the walls, and the almost invariably friendly service. This is what keeps me coming back. It's what makes a home a home. ;)
Just a note that the breakfast food is great (I love the breakfast burrito), as is the dinner menu (yummy avocado and brie stuffed chicken with mashed potatoes). And a nice wine list too.
My only thing with Barneys (which is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5) is that it doesn't stay open until 2:30 like I wish that it would. But Barney, I'm only saying that because I like you so much. -

Good breakfast. Lousy service if you have kids. You can think is an oversight they don't have high chairs, but no, thats "never gonna happen, don't like kids" they said. Too hipster a place for kids? Really?

Hangover Breakfast. YES
The original Caffe Barney never fails to impress.
I have been coming here for about a decade to have my breakfasts with friends or even alone. Breakfasts are served late into the day so don't fret if you wake up late.
Everything on the menu is reliable and tasty but MOST of all I ADORE getting the Chorizo sausage omlette. Everything I want in a filling omlette- i wish i could have this as my 3 square meals a day.
If you are here on the weekends get ready to LINE up!.
Goodt hing Bean Around the World is right besde this palce- get yourself a coffee and then patiently wait ..
It only gets more delicious.
the cozy interior wilk make you want to stay and drink a hangover beer = )
(which you can do)
Dinners here are dimly lit and nice. But the gem of this place is definitely brunch-time
and PS: the JAM in this place is the only breakfast jam that is worth eating all that bread for- no longer will you devour the breakfast and leave the toast behind
Warniing- do NOT expect the Main street location to be as cool. -

Great food!! Great prices! You normally wouldn't expect this kind of menu from a bar, not your average pub food! Friendly staff. Pleasant atmosphere. If you are in the South Granville area, go here!

I was skeptical when my friends wanted to grab a bite to eat in this neighborhood, however, I was pleasantly surprised. The menu caters to vegetarians (veg. poutine, yay) and they have a nice tap list to quench your thirst.
The staff is unpretentious and this place is just the right size to eat in a group or have an intimate affair.
The best part is it won't burn a hole through your wallet like some of the other places located nearby. -
Review from Emma L.
My go-to breakfast place in South Granville. Consistently good food and friendly staff. Last time I was here, my boyfriend and I got different versions of the breakfast special -- he got pancakes with a blueberry compote, while I got the french toast. De-lic-ious.
Big fan of the avocado and shrimp benny (sounds a little weird, but is super yummy) and the huevos rancheros. -
Review from Peter S.
Cool place. Liked the narrow space and lively atmosphere.
Thoroughly enjoyed a deadly Caesar and burger.
They have a couple of really good beers on tap too!
Definitely a step up from your average bar. -

Still a big fan of Caffe Barney, though after trying their brunch today, I decided, overall, the joint deserves a solid 4 stars rather than 5. I tried the benny, complete with smoked salmon and mushrooms. The food is not bad at all, but not the best brunch I've had. The portions are big, though, so if you're looking for a decently-priced, filling brunch, this is a good choice.
One caution: CB doesn't take debit cards.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Tasty Omelette!
Had brunch today at Caffe Barney with an old colleague. I thought I'd try some place new since I usually go to Medina's, and Barney's did not disappoint.
Got there at 1130am and there were about 4 people ahead of us so we opted on two seats at the counter. 3 cups of coffee and the chirizo omelette, which came with 2 slices of toast and hashbrown, definitely hit the spot. Nice friendly service, simple good breakfast place, and $30 for two. I like :)
PS. Ample free parking on Hemlock and 12th.
Taste = good
Food Presentation = good
Bang for the buck = fine
Would I go again = yes -

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner does a good job of summing up the multi-meal-serving Caffe Barney.
I've stopped in here for drinks on a few weekend and weeknight occasions. The bar is always close to but not overly full, so there are always a few seats to be had. Service is decent. I've not eaten here, but the wings smell amazing and the neighboring table devoured them in record time.
The atmosphere blends art with good mid-volume music -- allowing for conversations to flourish. Caffe Barney is a good bar for a lively chat and a few relaxing drinks. -

Caffe Barney is a fun and hip joint on groovy Granville Street. The food is delicious (especially the chicken wings), and the service is friendly and fast.
This particular Caffe Barney has an old rustic feel to it, with wooden furniture and flooring. There's a bar you can sit at, high tables and chairs, or normal lower tables and chairs.
This is a great place to come with a few friends to enjoy a bevvie and a catch up. -

nothing fancy. caffe barney is good for one thing: eggs.
my fave would be the eggs benny with bacon & avacado, but everything i have tried i have enjoyed.
nothing helps your hangover like eggs benny & a beer at caffe barney on a sunday morning.
me and my sister did stop in one night to the location on main street when we wanted to grab a quick bite. i always expected the dinner there to be mediocre, but i was pleasantly surprised. we had a spaghetti with bacon and asparagus which we had 2 plated and it was really good! -

while I have enjoyed the food for well over 10 years, especially my all time fave Cajun Bennies.. I AM DONE WITH THE SURLY SERVICE. What is it with this place?.Years ago it was kind of a funny schtick from the bar. But this morning took the cake. The bartender serving our breakfast look like he had rolled out of bed after a hard night, did not even look at me while ordering, rung in our food and we never saw him again. How was your food? Well never got the well toasted english muffin like I asked as I guess it was too much work for him to ring it in. It's just the all around lack of kindness and consideration from the staff, the waiting to get what you need. It is busy all the time so people don't care I guess. I want more from a server that slapping a plate of food in front of me. WE DID NOT TIP..for what...I will stick with the Barney's on Main street as the staff is much friendlier..there are a couple from the granville location that are there because of the attitudes on Granville...

I have only been for breaky, but man is it good. I enjoyed an eggs benny and hashbrowns. The atmosphere was fun and the staff were really on top of it. I would recommend this to anyone in need of a little pick me up on a saturday morning.
