The goal was to find brunch for one vegetarian and two picky eaters. This mission was accomplished at Cafe My House.

There was meat for the self-proclaimed obligate carnivore who said he was very happy with his classic breakfast. (I was surprised, since the sausage looked like it had the least amount of preservatives possible and the manbeast has always loved his preservatives.) The blueberry pancakes were greatly appreciated by my mini-me, who actually ate them without picking out the blueberries. I found myself struggling not to let my eyes roll back in their sockets when I ate the tempeh benedict. I never used to like tempeh but am glad I risked it: it's delicious when prepared properly!

Our server was very knowledgeable about the ingredients in each dish and was conscientious enough to make sure that coconuts were okay for the nut-allergic member of our party.

I'm already planning my next visit and what I plan to order.

After seeing the Dalai Lama speak at the Ottawa Civic Center yesterday morning, my friends and I, perhaps inspired by His Holiness, opted to grab lunch at a place that caters to the conscious palate. Located in Ottawa South, in a sea of box stores and fast food/chain restaurants, Cafe My House is a beacon of light.

I've been to Cafe My House several times now, always for brunch, and always for the vegan benedict.  I keep going back for the same dish because the combo of tempeh, kale, eggplant and rye bread, and veganized "hollandaise sauce" is phenomenal. However, this weekend I decided to stray from the tried and true, and ordered the Mediterranean stuffed meatballs and spaghetti. The meatballs were a let down. They were dry and granular. Without the gooey Daiya cheese center and the creamy coating of vodka-infused sauce, the meatballs would have been a complete bust. The raw zucchini pasta, topped with basil, olives, tomatoes and cilantro, was unique and flavourful and kept the dish in the game.

Even though my dish was decent overall, I'll admit, I had a bit of meal envy as I watched one of my friends enjoy his vegan benedict and the other savour his tempeh cheeseburger. Luckily I was able to sample the latter, and it was top notch! Yes, it's a vegan cheeseburger, but I'd be willing to bet it would impress even the biggest burger aficionado. The coleslaw side was super tasty as well.

I don't normally venture south of Sunnyside, but Cafe My House is worth the trek. And to those of you who decide to make the trip via bus or bicycle, make sure to show your server a bus pass, transfer or a bike helmet and you'll get 5% off your order.

For the first time ever, I have the option of walking from my childhood home to a delicious and cozy "fine dining" vegan/vegetarian/flexitarian restaurant. This is a big deal for me, but it should be a bigger deal for Ottawans in Ottawa South who want to enjoy a delicious meal with the calm that you can't find at places like the Green Door or the Wild Oat. Yes, the restaurant's location is somewhat out of place, but the menu, friendly customer service and peaceful atmosphere make up for it.

The first time I came in, I had the Mediterranean Stuffed Meatball Spaghetti (walnut and cheese meatballs, raw zucchini spaghetti and vodka cream sauce) which was full of flavor and elegantly presented. The second time around I had the Tofu Mushroom Steak which was plated like (in my opinion) a psychedelic trip and tasted so fresh - the "House Ginger" sauce that is prepared overnight did not overpower the taste of the delicious kale and grilled veggies. My mother had the Spicy Wild Smoked Salmon roll and really enjoyed it, except that it was not filling for an entree (sushi usually is not). For dessert, I had the raw chocolate mousse and it was so yummy and practically guilt-free that I'm trying to figure out how to make it.

In short, this place is highly recommended and I hope that it's frequented often enough for it to keep its doors open. Spread the word!!

When my sister said she wanted to celebrate her birthday in this neck of the Ottawa woods, I gotta say, I was confused! When I think of Ottawa South, I don't think of innovative vegan friendly cuisine. To be honest, I think of Local Hero's and Cora's. Neither are that impressive. So! Imagine my surprise to stumble upon this establishment deep in the sea of horrible eateries. It's clean, it's cute, it's got some decent ambiance going. We're in good shape!

Appetizers were good: a beet and avocado salad and a cucumber and mango maki roll.
-The salad was very fresh and had seaweed paste on the bottom, greens, curly beets, avocado and nori. There was WAY too much nori. It really overpowered things but luckily it was easily avoidable.
-The mango and cucumber maki roll was really interesting, An addition of dill took things to the next level. They sat on a cool dipping sauce, but unfortunately I'm blanking on those details. Four pieces!

Ok, time for a huge disappointment: vegetable curry. Sitting low at the bottom of a HUGE bowl was a thick, brown sauce that coated and covered every vegetable. The ratio was WAY off; it would be like eating soup if the curry wasn't quite so viscous. The brown goo did not do the perfectly cooked sweet potatoes, brussel spouts, lotus root, kale, etc. justice. I didn't care for it's taste. Also! They forgot to put rice on the plate. It came out as a tiny scoop on a plate, no match for the olympic pool of liquid.

And so, it was a sad ending to and otherwise fine meal. Interesting to note is that you can bring you own wine! Bathrooms are strange to get to. Be prepared to exit the back door and enter the main hall of the bulding complex. You may or may not get confused and walk into a pizza shop trying to make your way back. Service is sweet and eager to please. Dining with vegetarians is interesting.

An outstanding addition to Ottawa's vegetarian/vegan community. A wide variety of interesting dishes and a friendly, knowledgable staff. A little on the expensive side but you certainly get what you pay for. Unquestionably one of the better places for veg food in the Nation's Capital.

Great brunch & dinner spot for vegetarians and omnivores alike. The menu has a lot of different options (all day brunch!) and the staff is great. My fave items are the tempeh benedict (brunch), tempeh cheeseburger (lunch) & bibimbop (dinner). Their shakes and teas are great as well. Overall, the atmosphere is modern and calm (good for dates or family dinners) but tables can fill up on weekends so be sure to make a reservation.
