I do frequent this restaurant over the last couple years. One thing I can be sure of at Cafe Mumbai is getting a quality, spicy indian meal!  From the Pakoras, Shahi Paneer to Tikka Masala. Each Recipe holds a very distinct flavor and heat!

last time I was there I ordered a Prawn Biryani and an Aloo Gobi. The rice was awesome. Good, healthy portion and very nice spices.  The rice and Naan came at an extra cost of a reasonable $3 per person.

The one thing that worries me is that during dinner time there is little to no traffic at the restaurant. I don't know what this place is like during lunch but I don't know of any restaurant being able to pay for its rent with such a small dinner crowd. Its kinda scary going to a restaurant with nobody in there... But I assure you the food here is great! My vegetarian indian friend recommended this place and we eat there regularly.

One of my favorite dishes there is the Tandoori Shahi Paneer and Prawn Vindaloo.  The Shahi Paneer is a great medly of tandoori, spices, vegetables and goat Cheese.  The textures, flavors and heat all work very nicely together to give a great overall warm feeling. The Vindaloo can come EXTREMELY HOT if you are not careful. I order it hot but I pay for it sometimes.... ha!

I recommend going as a group of 2 - 4 people. Order 3 Dishes and an appetizer. You will be pleasantly surprised. Walk out with a $20 bill pp and a warm tingly feeling in your Stomach!.... Speaking of which...im getting hungry again..

    Happy Eating!

We got take out from here and ordered the eggplant bharta and the fried okra curry (28 and 30 on the menu). The prices were pretty average for indian places I've been to and overall the place seemed very nice.

The front clerk was polite and relatively eager to help us.

Upon getting home we found the bharta to be noticeably oily which was a bit of a turn off. It was fairly tasty but a bit on the spicy side so watch out if you're not used to spice. Unlike most places I have been to they didn't offer a spice level, so I assumed it would be fairly mild. The bharta was quite good, and really brought out the individual flavours of the vegetables in it but wasn't as flavourful as dishes I've had at other places. I don't know that I would get it again.

The okra was very good and not super oily, but noticeably spicy again. I really love okra and this was pretty well cooked, not too soft, just right. The flavour of the dish was very good and I would definitely get it again.

The naan is a bit on the small side so we ordered 3 between the two of us and it turned out to be a good amount.

It was overall a fairly good meal and I would be interested in returning to try out other dishes.

Dining here was like the "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly".

We ordered the beef vindaloo, chicken korma, rice and naan.

    The good:
We received a friendly greeting upon entering and outstanding service throughout our meal. The decor was warm and fairly tasteful. The naan was among the best that we have had. The sauces were spiced perfectly ( vindaloo hot and korma not so much) and were extremely flavorful. The portions were very generous and were more than enough to fill our hungry bellies.

    The bad:
The  meat in the korma, although tender white meat, did not taste like it had been marinated or simmered in the sauce. It literally tasted like they had korma sauce to which they add the protein of choice 2 seconds before bringing it out to serve.

    The ugly:
Some, but not all of the pieces of beef should have had "Goodyear" stamped on them. We ended up using one of the empty ramekins as a collection spot for all of the beef that was chewed and spit into napkins. Yup, it was ugly.

I think this place has 4 or 5 star potential if they work out the deal with their proteins. They have everything else going for them.

Yay, a decent Indian restaurant in Kits! I came here for lunch on a weekday and shared a papdi chat and butter chicken with a friend. It was very decent.  The butter chicken had enough spice and heat to prevent me from complaining and was thick and creamy.  The papdi chat was nicely complex with flavours and well balanced in texture. I loved it! I would come back.

I have been to many Indian restaurants over the years. I have loved Indian from a young child and have been to ones in England to the West Indies.
The atmosphere is important (as is the food of course) to me when deciding on Indian fare. Mumbai's is OK. Needs a bit more finished details, but pretty cozy. Partly to the location too.
We went at night and it was rather cold inside. We had a party of 8 and the waiter seemed a bit unsure of the questions asked. The dishes were quite small for the price. However quite good. The meats dishes could have had a bit more..well..meat. The flavour was not bad, but a little bland. The chutneys were rather poor -could have had more variety on the table.
I would like to take in a lunch buffet at a later date.

My Boyfriend and I recently checked out Cafe Mumbai since we pass it reqularly and it always seems busy. It was great!! As soon as we entered we were seated right away (we made sure to make reservations and rightfully so as it was packed).

I ordered the Fish Curry and he ordered the Chicken Vindaloo, both hot. The sauce in both dishes were fantastic, you could taste all of the spices and the richness of it.

The staff we're very friendly and great at answering questions about the dishes (as I have a few allergies). I noticed that a large family had come in and the owner seemed to know them by name (very good in my books).

Anyways, if you want a great place to try, this is it. Great food and great service!

    Brett's To-The-Point™ Review:

Food was good (better than Indian Oven but also more expensive), service was fine (waitress had no personality but the owner is very nice and both were attentive), and the decor is nice (sans the power cable coming out of the glowing buddha in front of one of the water features in the shop).

I went to this restaurant on a colleague's recommendation. The place was pretty quiet and we were seated right away . My dinning partner ordered Butter Chicken and I ordered the veggie dish with green peas and the home made cheese... I forget the name!

It took about 30-40 minutes to get our order. The butter chicken was pretty good and you could taste the cinnamon in it. I was a littel bit too sweet but delicious nevertheless. My dish was also really good, but I must admit that I liked the chicken better hehe!
Naan and rice was good too, I didn't like the fact that the rice wasn't inluded with the meal.. and it was like 3$ or 4$.
Honestly this place is decent but it's a bit overpriced for what it is.

Stumbled upon this place, but it is our go-to Indian place now. We've tried maybe 6 or 7 things on the menu, and always take-away (although the restaurant looks lovely inside).
    Great prices, and really tasty.

I went there for a takeout order. we ordered the mix snack platter, bhinda piaza, chicken curry and lamb saag...Everything tasted great however when I go back I will definitely order the lamb saag it was juicy and succulent. We ordered chicken naan and the regular naan as well and it was delicious. The gentlemen was so sweet while I was waiting I was not only offered water but he made me this mango lassi? My hubby loved it, I took it to go. Oh and I mentioned to the gentleman that we love rice he gave us a heaping amount of it.

The portions are huge we still have left overs.

    very delicious:)

We have dined at Jaspal and Amar's restaurants here in Kitsilano and formerly in Surrey for a great many years. The food is always wonderful, the portions generous and the prices very reasonable. Add to the this, the friendly and cozy atmosphere  and this makes the restaurant a perfect destination for lunch or dinner. Delicious Indian food without the 'fusion confusion' !

I was impressed with Cafe Mumbai's vegetarian choices! I ordered a chai tea, dal makhani, and paratha bread. YUM! The food came out quickly, which was great for a Saturday evening. Tasty and not to expensive with great service.

Don't let the odd mix of classy settings and furniture with somewhat kitschy decorations keep you away. The food makes up for it. Delicious curries and tandoori served up family style. Nothing too fancy, just quality. Vindaloo curries seem to be a specialty and the lamb option didn't disappoint me; the veggie pakora were perfectly spiced. It's hard to stand out in the sea of Indian options available in Vancouver, but Cafe Mumbai does an admirable job.

After just eating awful Indian food, my fix was not met so I had to venture off to a second venue to fulfill my need of curry and spice. This place was able to provide the fix but it still left me wanting more. I'm from Toronto, which is full of Indians (many of which know how to cook) so I'm used to  a certain calibre of Indian food. Unfortunately this place didn't meet my expectations (for reviews I've read). I found that it wasn't spicy enough and that the chicken didn't really absorb the flavour of the sauce. The naan was pretty good, but nothing to talk about. The rice seems expensive. The restaurant was empty when I went for takeout. I'd go back if I craved Indian food and didn't wanna go far because it's in my neighbourhood, but I'm still on the hunt for good Indian food in Vancouver.

Unfortunately Cafe Mumbai does not do delivery, which is unfortunate if you have a cold and need Butter Chicken.  I was disappointed.  The flavor was ok, but the chicken was very dry and unappetizing and my naan bread was a little scorched, and not in the usual way.  The service is friendly in person, but like many places the phone manners could be worked on (why is that always?).  I think I may give this one a pass the next time I do Indian.
