Review from David B.
Best meal we had in Quebec. We went in a Sunday night in the low season. There were only two other tables occupied so our waiter Eric spent a lot of time with us. His reccomendations of fish soup, boudin (blood sausage), sweetbreads and cassoulet became our meal.
The sausage was great. Very subtle flavor served with a poached apple and salad that complimented nicely. The fish soup had a nice complexity of flavor.
The standout winner was the sweetbreads. They were perfectly cooked and very creamy. They didn't have a strong organ flavor which was a good thing.
The cassoulet was chock full of duck confit, lamb and sausage. The sauce was great but the white beans were a little too al dente for my liking.
I would order any of these dishes again. We had a somewhat forgettable dessert but that wasn't our purpose for eating here. By the end of the meal, we were full of good wine and good food sitting by the fore, i could have taken a nap. The total bill before tip came to just $100. Very reasonably (if not under) priced. -

Sweetbreads and blood sausage. I died and went to heaven. Ah sweet Jesus. Unpretentious, relaxing, cozy French bistro, lovely waitress, unobtrusive jazz music. If only life was full of nights as beautiful as mine at Le Cafe St. Malo.

Very nice petite restaurant near the Port. Classical French dishes. Although they have outdoor seating we ate indoors because it was a little windy. Nice ambience indoors. I had the escargot and sweetbreads. Both outstanding. My dining partner had the "Steak Frites". Tasty and well prepared but the steak was a little chewy- par for this type lunch.
Service was fine. -

I will just say these few things: I had horse meat skirt steak (rare) and sauteed veal brains, as separate dinners. Both for the first time. And both were delicious. Malo also makes some of the best french fries I've had anywhere. Including Les Halles in NYC. Just a wonderful place.

This is the first 5 star review I've ever written. Back on Rue St. Paul, there are a number of places to eat. I was walking by while I was on vacation in Quebec City, and their menu looked interesting so I checked in. Now, this is a small place, and you do have to wait a bit for your food, so be patient. But, it's probably the best food I've had in Quebec City. The 2 waitresses are *very* friendly, and will take the time to explain the menu to you if you don't know how to speak french. The food is superb, the waitstaff is patient and friendly, and it's a very cozy place with outdoor seating.

we were in QC in early October and came upon the yelp review of cafe St. Malo. The first night we tried to dine there, they were booked. We made reservations on the spot for the next night and it was worth the wait! The food was excellent and the service was delightful. I had the cassoulet and my date had a seafood soup- both of which were delightful. Our server was the great-nephew or grandson of the owner and was clearly dedicated to the cafe. I definitely recommend it and reservations!

Classic French Cafe perfectly executed. Very cozy small dining room (32 seats?) with rough stone and brick walls. Classic French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings on the low ceiling a la the Sistine Chapel. Believe me, it's not kitch; it works. Lovely service even when rushed and a classic cafe menu. Terrine, moules, cassoulet all spot on. The cassoulet had a full confit de canard and an entire saucisse de Toulouse along with chunks of lamb. Nice selection of wines. Yummy desserts. Be sure to reserve a table as do the locals or you'll be waiting outside with the jealous tourists hoping to get in after 9 pm.

Looks like a tourist trap, but it isn't. Excellent french bistro. We had the mussels and the horse meat. Everything was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The service is however a bit slow and disorganized.

Perfect service, perfect space, perfect food. Salmon tartare and frites were absolutely wonderful. I regret not being able to visit more than once!

Charming, moody, romantic atmosphere. Very friendly and attentive, albeit leisurely, service. The restaurant is tucked away on a quiet street and on a Sunday night, although only half-filled, still had more diners than any other restaurant in the area. Good for a casual, authentic French dinner. Had a delicious moules and frites to start, followed by a confit of duck with, yup, more frites. Definitely recommend.

We knew we were on to something when we gave the address to our cabbie and he said, "Oui, Cafe St. Malo." "You know it! Is it good?" I asked him, and he said it served the best cassolet and blood sausage in town. We ordered both and, although we weren't in the city long enough to do our own research, can report that both were fantastic and the cabbie's assessment appears to rest on solid ground. Also, the desserts---we tried both that they had that night---a chocolate cake and a raspberry creme cake. Ces sont parfait. The joint is small, probably no more than a 20 seater, and feels like a little piece of the South of France (the chef's original home) found its way to this cold, windy street in Canada. What you should know: if you are an impatient diner, it is probably not for you. The night we were there, there was only one (wonderfully friendly and gregarious) waiter, and the meal was a joyous event, happily drawn out by bottles of wine and good conversation. Although we weren't the only tourists there, it was clearly a home away from home for locals of all types. The next time we find our way to Quebec City, we will be back.
