Review from Ben B.
Cafe Istanbul has been on my list to try ever since the very start of my yelp-life began almost a full year ago so I was *thrilled* when a friend finally gave us a reason to pop in for an early birthday celebration.
Now, I totally thought that Cafe Istanbul and Turkish Delight were the same thing, so colour me surprised when we popped into the very charming, bright, and cultural space that was our actual destination up toward Robie Street on Spring Garden. We landed a corner seat on cushioned benches which was a nice complement to the theme of the night.
The service was friendly, energetic, and fun which is always nice. I hate feeling like your servers hate being there and you could tell that the ladies working tonight were game to play around a bit with our jokey crew. They checked in regularly and often to make sure that we had everything that we needed. Sure, they forgot to bring out one of the desserts at the end of the night, but it was on the table within 90 seconds of reminding her that it was ordered so absolutely no harm done.
And the food? SLAMMIN'. The menu is small in physical size but huge in actual selection with salads, hot and cold appetizers, wraps, platters, main dishes, and probably more that I've already forgotten. Tons of options for both carnivores and vegetarians/vegans, snackers and starved diners, and just about anyone who has even the slightest interest in middle eastern eats.
The hummus was some of the best I've tasted, the little deep-fried cheese triangles are my new life partners (Sister Wives style), and the lentil kofte wrap was a delicious and creative twist that was much more exciting than your average falafel dish. But all of this hardly matters because you're just going to want to shovel their thick, fresh, perfectly cooked pita bread into your face.
Our bill for one app, two mains (both wraps), one dessert, and a half-litre of wine was $58 plus tip. Stupid cheap. Just go. Right now. -

Having worked in a Greek restaurant until very recently, I was always hesitant to go out to other Mediterranean restaurants. The restaurant I worked for has a fabulous reputation and delicious, hearty portions that always deliver quality. And of course, I got an employee discount... Needless to say, trying a new place that held the potential to cost me more and possibly disappoint wasn't appealing.
But Cafe Istanbul did anything but disappoint.
I went on one of the rare sunny evenings Halifax has had this past spring, so the patio was a must. At first I thought the location (basically right on the corner of Spring Garden and Robie) would be hell on the ears, and I wasn't in the mood to yell at my friend over the table. But it was surprisingly calm. Mind you, one probably wouldn't find inner peace or anything, but the traffic was barely a distraction and I didn't find myself missing the Argyle patio scene.
After being fashionably late, I was greeted by an understanding friend and large, cold pitcher of water on our table. FANTASTIC. When a restaurant can give every table a pitcher of water, they're thinking of both their customers and their waitstaff.
I ordered the chicken wrap and it came with a side order of a Turkish salad. Wrapped in a warm, thick pita were tender chicken pieces, a garlic yogurt sauce similar to tzatziki, onions and tomatoes. I was especially stoked to find the Turkish salad was all chunks of tomato, onion, cucumber and green pepper - no lettuce. I hate lettuce. An added bonus to the salad was the feta the waitress and kitchen graciously agreed to hook me up with - no extra charge!
The best part of all of this was I had a great, light dinner and a glass of wine for less than $20 before tip. I can't wait to go back and try some of the dips and a Turkish coffee! -

Last winter, I went to Istanbul for a week and among all the delicious food I had, breakfast was the glittering jewel. So you can imagine the thoughts of jams, olives, and cheeses that swirled through my head when Istanbul Cafe announced its brunch.
I have never been to Cafe Istanbul for dinner before, but (believe you and me, that will be a yelp for another day) I was very excited for the classic turkish breakfast.
It was off-putting at first when I saw a giant cartoon chicken on the wooden sign outside the door beckoning me for a brunch that might be like Denny's, but I still pressed on.
The interior was very bright and cheery with iznik style plates and tiles, blue and tan walls, bright lamps with evil eyes (nazar boncuk), and a large mural of ships passing through the Bosphorus. The tables and chairs were made of dark wood which gave a great contrast to the light walls and ample light coming through the large bay window. This was guaranteed to be a great meal...
I ordered the classic turkish breakfast (feta cheese, cheese score, 2 jams, kalamata olives, pickled peppers, red and green peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, and a hard boiled egg for 8.25$) with an extra side of the house made lamb sausage (1.75$)
Whilst waiting for my brunch I couldn't help but start grooving to the light turkish pop on the radio that I found irresistible and tried to not dance to in public. The best part of the meal was brought, a pitcher of water. Every time I go to a restaurant, I find myself repeatedly flagging down the waiter for more water (like Shania Twain) and waiting forever. This was a wonderful change of pace.
Then the tea arrived, and I held my breath, thinking that it might come in an english tea cup, but NO it came in the traditional tulip glass that I came to love during my trip to Turkey. Although there were no sugar cubes, the tea was strong and delicious.
When the turkish breakfast arrived, I was pleased to find the vegetables fresh and crunchy, the kalamata olives were NOT pitted, which is how I like them (pitted olives are often less salty and bland), the feta was dense and tasty, and the pickled peppers suitably brined. However there were two real stars to this meal, the lamb sausage and the cheese scone.
The lamb sausage was pure divinity. In a patty form instead of links, it was bursting with otherworldy flavour. I recommend getting several order, as you get 4 patties per side order, to experience this properly.
The cheese scone was wonderfully crumbly with spots of melted cheddar cheese and came with two jams. The first was rose which had a light sweet rose flavour which was my favourite of the two, even though I do not like rose flavoured foods. The second jam was a quince jam that had a thick honey flavour which I did not enjoy as much as the airy lightness of the rose.
It is turkish custom to leave some food on the plate, so as to not invite famine or to show that a guest is filled. After this breakfast of wonders, I left not a trace of any of the foods mentioned above, but I knew I wouldn't go hungry!
As I awaited my check, I looked out onto the bright sun shining down on Spring Garden pedestrians, and sipped endless glasses of tea, I realized that I easily spend hours here, and it seemed the wait staff was just as happy for me to do this.
I have not yet gone to dinner at Istanbul Cafe, but I am excited to try it now that I know the wonders they can perform at bunch, I highly recommend brunch here for a good morning among friends, a morning rendezvous with a loved one, or for those that are health conscious. A light breakfast of vegetables, cheeses, and olives is much healthy for the body than a gutbusting meal of pancakes and syrup. So for what ever your reason, try and stop by some weekend soon for a good meal.
Note: At dinner for the month of April 2011, all kebabs are 15% off -

An unexpected delight.
While the proportions are not large they have taken the time in the preparation and execution of each dish to make the overall experience wonderful.
The fresh ingredients and the precisely cooked meat to perfection made this moderately priced place comparable to any expensive restaurant in Toronto or Vancouver.
I particularly enjoyed the warming soup and the helap kebab which featured a juicy grilled chicken skewer and a skewer of lamb along with an refreshing salad and a buttered rice.
Also interestingly enough to note was the availability of purchasing prepared kebabs already marinated and lean in cut to take home and cook yourself. Naturally an assortment of dips and other options like olives were there.
Lastly the service was impeccable and was even recognized at the theatre by our server the following day. -

I am for sure a fan of Cafe Istanbul, but only because the food is fantastic.
I've been a few times and each time the food has been excellent. The service, however, lacks. Each time I've been I've had the same female server, and each time I cringe.
When asking a question about the menu her standard response is "well, what is written on the page?". Often simple requests upon ordering aren't fulfilled. Nothing really worth causing a fuss over, just simple things we've asked to have done that never happened.
If you're looking for reasonably priced, tasty Mediterranean food, and are willing to give up a bit of service, then this is the place for you. Just be warned: the dining room is small and cramped. You'll make friends with your table neighbours by the end of your meal! -

Wow, just wow. When I first moved to Halifax, I used to bypass this place all the time, assuming that the Cafe would be ludicrously priced like other Mediterranian restaurants I'd seen in Ontario and BC. (At the time I was a near-broke med student at Dal, and couldn't afford such "indulgences")
I did eventually sample the cuisine at Istanbul, and when I got the final bill, I was floored- the price is incredibly reasonable considering the exceptional quality of food and service.
What sets Istanbul apart from other restaurants is their conscientious attention to detail, and their commitment to quality. They use only the finest of ingredients and provide healthy, tasty selections for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike. (I'm a meat lover, so the lamb menu items are a real treat).
Cafe Istanbul's quality dining experience extends beyond great-tasting cuisine; there is also a profound commitment to exceptional service. The attention to finer details emerges in the well-crafted layout of the cafe; intricate murals and lighting fixtures give the cafe a rich, exotic feel that's warm and inviting (part of what kept me away for so long was my concern that the place looked too "swanky" for my budget). I also like that patrons have a clear view of the kitchen facilities, which gives a more intimate feel to fine dining (I'm used to seeing that in really ritzy, break-the-bank restaurants).
I can't say enough great things about Cafe Istanbul- it is really a high-end quality dining experience without the high-end prices. -

I wanted to come back for a visit after mistaking this spot for a café during a spontaneous stop in. My first visit was utter delight, as I skimmed the menu sightings of eggplant, kebab and hummus dishes with potential. The warm and intimate interiors were offset by friendly service, and everything about Istanbul drew me in.
Unfortunately, my first visit was on a full stomach, and tiny teas (yes.. the tea is served as miniatures) were just about all I could handle. The second time around would be about the veggie dish. At $14, this was a full plate of both hot and cold variations of the cafe's vegetarian opportunity. It switches up frequently, but I was more than pleased with my scattering of eggplant, dips and kabob action.
There are still so many things on this menu that I'd like to try. The lentil kofte red lentil balls, roasted red pepper puree served with grated feta-cheese, vegetarian red lentil soup, etc. There is prime opportunity for both meat lovers and veggies to congregate happily, and at fantastic prices.
The same great service, lovely atmosphere--- Istanbul is a sure bet.1 Previous Review: Show all »

The best thing about Cafe Istanbul is the combination of stellar food and reasonable prices. It's the perfect place to go when you're in the mood for a delicious meal in a restaurant with a cozy atmosphere, but you don't necessarily want to break the bank. And since the prices are so good, you can order an extra portion of phyllo pastry & feta cheese triangles...right?

I really love this place. We stopped by here today for lunch. Packed as always, but got right in with a table. I always like to watch the wonderful plates of food walk by me, wishing I could just steal a bite.
We ordered the veggie plates. Can you say Garlic! There was about four spreads, fresh tomato, beets, and some other goodies. This was good! It came with the basket of the warm flat bread.
I can say , everyone in this restaurant cleans their plates. Always a pleasant atmosphere, great energy, and great food.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Café Istanbul is a welcome edition to the Coburg Road area. Up until this place set up shop, you'd be hard pressed to find decent, healthy cuisine within a mile radius of Dalhousie.
When I last visited, the place was bumping: packed with students and adults alike, grabbing a quick lunch before drudging back to the salt mines. I enjoyed a fantastic lentil kofte wrap while my dining compatriots ordered similar meals, as well as dips, dolmas, and haloumi.
The whole experience was great. The servers were friendly, and the people behind the counter whipping up the dishes were quick. The atmosphere is fun, with brightly colored paintings on the walls.
Café Istanbul is a great place to dine if you're in the Coburg Road area. Heck, even if you aren't, you should swing on by and make a special stop for a tasty and healthy lunch. -

Solid Turkish food in Halifax? Surprise.
Came here a for a pre-arranged dinner. The starting platter had a delicious mix of apps. The meat was tender. But the best part was the Baklava, crispy phyllo layers, pistachios and honey. Impressive.
Service was a bit slow and the belly dancer just couldn't navigate around the cramped seating. Interesting addition to the Halifax food scene. -

I dare say, when this place appeared it must have been one of the best things to appear here in years!
I dare anyone to order anything bad off their menu.
In all seriousness though perhaps what always impresses me about Cafe Istanbul (and even Cafe Istanbul Express in Scotia Square) is their dedication to fresh ingredients. The food is always so tasty but a part of that is a dedication to quality ingredients. Even at some more high-end places to eat it's common to see produce and ingredients used that are "just good enough" Not the case here and I hope that never changes.
Plus, the staff is always so friendly and they are all such beautiful people. There is no reason to not eat here! -

Café Istanbul is simply amazing. For mediterranean food lovers, the choice can't be bettered anywhere in the city.
Café Istanbul instantly impresses you from street level. The chic black awnings promise an attention to esthetics and detail. Once inside, this perception is reinforced as you gaze at the artwork and fixtures. Café Istanbul offers a carefully crafted menu and because it's Mediterranean food, you can take comfort knowing that saturated fats and sugars won't be appearing on your plate.
There is so much to sample; it can be overwhelming to browse the menu. I can personally recommend the kafte kebab; the mixture of spices is incredible. Even the dipping sauces that accompany your meal are well blended and perfectly suited to pair with your chosen dish.
Café Istanbul is open for both lunch and dinner dining. If you can, try to aim for an off-meal time as this restaurant is very popular and getting a table at peak times can be difficult. -

granted, i've never stepped foot inside Cafe Istanbul. never even peered into the window.
but, when cold take-out (especially lamb) tastes as good it did tonight, you can't go wrong.
and the accompanying soup and salad (which were both room temp by the time i got to delve into them) were phenomenal. really. -

A nice addition to the Spring Garden Road restaurant scene. Authentic Turkish food with that spicy zip. Casual atmosphere, great odors, reasonable prices and fast service. Love the kebaps.
