    Super cool place!

Kudo's to Amanda for setting this up for a UYE!

Met up here with a bunch of Yelpers and a couple of academics wanting to find out what Yelp was all about.  All in all a great time!

This is the first time that I've eaten this type of food.  Japanese-western comfort food is probably the best description.  Similar concept to what you would get at any HK style cafes, but with a Japanese spin instead.

I didn't know what to order so I went with something basic. A hamburger steak with sauce demi-glace.  Served with carrots, mashed potatoes, and choice of rice or dinner roll.  It was good.  The carrots were a bit on the sweet side for me, but that was not a deal breaker. $10.

Prices are very resonable.  Definitley coming back to try other offerings.

    VISA/MC/Cash accepted.

I've driven by this place often in the Marpole area, however, never actually knew that it existed until Larry & Amanda set up this awesome late night UYE on Friday night. It is an easily missable location both by transit and foot, however, once found, you appreciate the gem.

Parking is a bitch, therefore, if you're driving, best park in the residential area after dark and use the extra few blocks to burn off  the calories for the dessert, even though you will end up eating 5 times as much in sweets.

I was overwhelmed with the menu, so many choices, so little calorie allowance and time. I played it smart; rather than ordering one large dish, I ordered small portions of a bunch of dishes to experience the full range of what the café had to offer.

I really wanted the green tea crème brule that another fellow Yelper talked up only to be disappointed that it was unavailable, however, settled from crème pudding which tastes like a cream brule with a more creamer than eggy texture sans the hot torch crust.

The ambience is neutral but it is what you make of it with the company you hold. Luckily I was in the company of a fabulous Yelp group which was awesome. It is small, mostly 2 seaters, perfect for a quick casual date.

Prices were very reasonable and the service was prompt and friendly. The waitress/server was very patient with me as I starred at the dessert window for 5 minutes overwhelmed with the selection.

The soup special was corn which was really good. My second dessert, the orange tart was a little on the hard side, even for an almond based tart, however, satisfied my need at the time. The steamed rice was for my liking, texture and all.

The location is out of the way from where I live, therefore, I cannot return, however, for quick location meet ups, this seems serve the purpose.

    Another great awesome UYE.

Updates on what I've tried recently:

++++++++++ Cheesecake with Grapefruit Jelly: It was a really light moussy cheesecake with a layer of sponge. The pink grapefruit set in jelly was pretty and delicious!

+- Wafu Spaghetti: Wasn't too charmed by that. It was nice and non-greasy, though it was a stir-fry kind (as opposed to saucy).

+++++++ Ratatouille: I loved it, but the chicken parmesan cutlet that came with it was too greasy (it was a thigh, including the skin). I wonder if I can order the ratatouille with something else? (I still like the breading on the cutlet. I think I loved it on my first review, since I had a bite of it, not the whole one.)

Oh, and the water cups are now grown-up glasses :) yay

Small little space in the 7-11 plaza of granville & 70th area.
I had the sesame parfait, which deserves a 4 or 5 star review easily on its own.
I also had the spaghetti carbonara, which against my personal preference was tooo cheesy for me (see any of my other reviews involving mac and cheese and you will learn of my cheese ocd).

As I work my way through the rest of their desserts (and it was hard to choose just one on my first visit), I will update and likely add a star. Good desserts are hard to come by, so I'm suspecting this might be one of those places I take visitors to impress them with something sugary and new.

Only had the blueberry smoothie which was good for its price, looking forward to the Yelp event next Friday to try the real good stuff, their desserts.  With will power, I postponed this but it sure was tough, judging from the cakes they had in display.

Quite spacious, and relaxing atmosphere.  Kudos to the Japanese owners, very polite and courteous.  heck, I even told them I was going to Ikura Japanese next door for a brief meeting, be back in 15min. but she ended up walking over about half an hour later!

Now that's what you call service ;)  I should give it a 4 but i'm sure after dessert lol

Cute Japanese-Western comfort food cafe located in a strip mall.  I found it amusing that every single table set was different.  It got pretty busy on a Saturday lunch, lots of Japanese families with kids stopping by.

Their pasta's looked really good - I got judged by my dining partner for wanting to order carbonara for lunch, so I succumbed to the pressure and got a chicken panini instead.  The panini was a flat bread pocket filled with chicken pot-pie filling - creamy white sauce, some cheese and lots of chicken.  Good, but next time I'm getting carbonara even if its at 11:30 AM!

Also had the baked lemon cheesecake - somewhat dense, good pie crust that didn't crumble away.  Lots of desserts to tempt in their deli case - the chocolate cake affogato sounded really good.

This is my favorite casual cafe/diner place in Vancouver.

    pros:
Good variety of Japanese influenced Western dishes.
They are open from morning till later than 9 pm, so you can drop by anytime you are hungry.
They serve a full range of coffee drinks as well as regular food.
    Service is polite and efficient.
    It's got a relaxing atmosphere.

    cons:
Sometimes the washroom doesn't have hot water.
    It's pretty small.
The parking lot is often full and getting out is hard because it's on Granville.

    I recommend:
French Toast - sometimes it's a little too burnt but usually it's really delicious.
Half-pound hamburger with demi-mayo sauce - really messy but really good.
Deep fried shrimp sandwich - just really good.
Mango roll cake - they make this and other dessert pastries themselves.

    YUMMY!

I've first tried this place back in early 2011, and the only reason I haven't reviewed it yet even though I keep coming back is that I'm busy trying stuff on their menu.  Good excuse?

I remember the first (and second, and third...) time my friend tried to take me to this place, it was closed.  All three of these times happened to be on a Tuesday.  For your sake, don't go on a Tuesday.  They close the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month.  Bizarre? YES! Imagine how disappointed we were.  But I was determined to try it, since she said that their Japanese parfaits were yummmy~ (and cheaper than Chicco Cafe's http://www.yelp.ca/biz... ).

Finally was able to try it (yet, on a Tuesday; why don't I ever learn?).  As of late, I've tried:

Mango mousse parfait - SOOOOOO good; I don't know what the white layer on top of the mango mousse was, but it was so light and heavenly; not too sweet at all (this is coming from a person who doesn't like creamy stuff)

Bananachoco parfait - VERY filling.  They sliced up a whole banana in there! Recommended for sharing, especially after a proper meal

Coffee jelly parfait - I took a spoonful from my coffee eccentric of a friend.  If you like the bitterness of black coffee (or coffee jelly), this is for you.  It was simply too bitter for me though.  Even the ice cream couldn't make me eat another spoonful.

Zunda parfait - Edamame paste with dango - There were two blobs of green, almost gritty stuff that's apparently sweet edamame paste (interesting), and dango (rice balls), red bean paste, with ice cream, cornflakes etc.  Veggies in your dessert?  It works!

Matcha tiramisu - If there's something green tea flavored on the dessert menu, I always have to try it. Sometimes, all you get is the green.  This cake had the green and the matcha taste.  and I love, very much.

Matcha creme brulee - I would've liked more matcha taste, but it's still very good (running out of adjectives)

Matcha roll cake - I was pleasantly surprised when one order came with two slices. Definitely made my day.  In some roll cakes, the cream filling, I find, is too salty, or buttery-tasting, so I usually steer away from them.  However, the cream in this roll tasted like green tea. And that's good.

    TL;DR
Um, yes.  I like dessert.  And this place is the bomb. I've tried some food here (that is not dessert), but it's been too long that I've forgotten what I've ordered.  But it was something curry and it was good. Staff is super friendly, and ambiance is casual and relaxing.

    Edit// 2012.05.01

Finally tried the Triple Berry Parfait!!!!!111111
I guess it's finally in season (: Go try it, people!
Berry mousse underlying vanilla ice cream in a slender cup, topped with blueberries, blackberries and... strawberries?  Apologies, it was pretty much gone in an instant when it got to my table.

I've driven by this place many times and always wondered what kind of cafe it was. I assumed it was another Chinese cafe with bubble tea or something. But reading some reviews here clarified that mystery.
I mentioned to my partner in crime about a Japanese cafe and she was all over it. Japanestern food? Yes please!

If I see carbonara on a menu, 99% chance I will order it. It was the first meal of the day for me, but hey, it has eggs, bacon and cream. Just like breakfast right? The pasta was boiled just right, with good amount of sauce, bacon and orange peppers. The random pieces of garlic was a nice surprise and added variety to the taste. If my friend and I weren't talking our faces off, I might have been able to finish the last bite. But unfortunately, it had gotten cold and the sauce had become coagulated. My lesson for next time, finish your food while it's hot and then chatter away.

The shop had a family-run feel to it with sincere staff. You can tell they really cared about their patrons. I hope to come back again and try their hayashi rice and desserts.
The only thing I have to criticize about the place would be the interior. It can use a bit of sprucing up.

God, I wonder how many reviews and check-ins I have here. Not nearly as much as I should have.  It's just so hard to keep up with Sachi san on this one!
Brought the kids here for a quick lunch with brother Jay (who still hasn't written his review yet...)

He had his "Brothers Special" (the Hiyashi rice with hamburger steak and fried egg.)
Daughter unit had her salad and pea soup
The boy had his hamburger steak and ate everything except a little piece of meat which we had to tease him about.  He's a rice lover in every sense.  He loves to eat rice.
I had Chicken Nanban and half of the salad from the "D unit".

Great meal, the place was busy and Yamato san has really found his niche here in this area.  I'm so glad!  The place was filled with people of all diversities and happy patrons at that too!

Saw this cafe while driving off the bridge and decided to get it try after reading the reviews on Yelp! Thanks to Yelp! I ate the Spaghetti Carbonara and soup of the day (corn soup). Also tried a bit of the other dishes cause I was eating with family. I have to say its more on the salty side. Would've been better if it wasn't so salty. The desserts were pretty decent. You can tell they put in a lot of effort into making it look delicious :)

Having eaten here about a dozen times since my last review I feel qualified to say that everything on the menu is superb. I have enjoyed EVERYTHING I have ordered on their dinner menu. Yamato san and the rest of the staff is really friendly and willing to go that extra mile to make you happy. The Curry Hamburger dish is probably my favorite and the Yamato breakfast is fast becoming my fave breakfast dish in the whole area. Love their fresh homemade desserts like Strawberry and Green tea rolls, cheesecakes, and molten chocolate lava cakes! Hands down, this is my favorite restaurant and cafe in Vancouver. QUE RICO!

Cafe L'Orangerie is a great place in terms of feeling cozy and neighborly. I was greeted in Japanese and with a great smile. I took a seat at 5:30 pm a week night and it was quiet. I was the only one there at the time.

I ordered the Ponzu sauce Pork dish (can't remember the exact name) but it when I took the first bite, I must admit that I was thoroughly disappointed. The pork was just too salty. The ponzu sauce has a sharp tartness, which I'm not too sure they were meant to be used to balance out the saltiness but it never quite did.

The ponzu sauce is sharp, tart and has a strong vinegar taste. Which is something I enjoy since I'm a big fan of balsamic vinegar.

I wouldn't necessarily disregard their cooking because I've heard good things from my friends, but I just wouldn't order that specific dish.

They also included Japanese rice, which was soft and chewy. Which is the way I enjoy it. It wasn't soggy. And the salad was nice but it's hard when the salad is so close to a hot food so it takes away some of the flavours from it.

In terms of value, I paid $10 for my dish plus tax. In the Marpole area there are other places to eat, but this cafe has a unique niche. And I'll probably be back to try out the Japanese curry.

Cafe de l'Orangerie is literally a hole in the wall.  If you drive southbound from Granville, the place is completely obscured by bushes.  If you are going northbound and blink or sneeze, it's also over.

The only reason I found it was because we were trying to park to eat at nearby Ikura (15m away) and my parking spot happened to be in front of this place.  What drew us in was the nice little picture of Neopolitan spaghetti on the front window.  And of course, the wrinkled "Yelp Loves Us" sticker on the glass.

The parking lot here is TINY, with maybe 6 parking spots.  Fortunately, parking around Granville is also free around here.

The staff were all.. Japanese.  It was actually pretty cool.  It's hard to explain, but there was a Japanese touch in the way the cafe was run.

My friend had the Chicken Mayo sandwich.  It was a giant slab of meat, between some kind of fancy high-end bread (no idea what it's called haha).  He ended up spilling everywhere.  Mentioned it was difficult to hold as there was too much stuff inside.

I had the Spaghetti Carbonara ($9.50).  I'm a sucker for cream sauce and bacon, so ordering this was a given.  The bacon wasn't too fatty, but interestingly enough, the dish was a lot more tomatoey (flavour, not looks) than I expected.  What I also liked was that there was just enough sauce.  Not too much, not too little.  Normally you get a heart attack from eating this.

On the way out, we noticed that the cafe also had a mini bakery shelf, with exquisite-looking cakes (something you'd find in an Asian bakery such as Pine House or T&T).

I will definitely be back here.  For some reason, this place really brings a smile to my face.

Cafe de l'Orangerie is a mix between a cafe and restaurant. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as a plethora of beverages and desserts. Their dishes are Japanese-styled Western meals.

Food here is definitely good - it reminds me of the Japanese-Western cafe's they have in Japan. I had the curry burger steak and it was really good. My gf had their chicken steak but got rice instead of the penne she wanted. The gentleman that works there was eager to rectify that mistake by replacing the entire dish but we kept it b/c we didn't want to waste food. Before we left he quickly came out of the kitchen and gave us a cookie on the house as an apology. He didn't have to, but that really showed me how much they care about their customers.

Definitely will be back to try some of their beverage and desserts next time!

    * Japanese style Western cafe which continues to impress *

While struggling to connect with people in Japan and failing due to international lines being down, I was drawn to get a Japanese lunch.

The friendly couple who runs this place continue to provide really friendly service with high quality food.  Thank you to Sachi M. for pointing out they now have a well trained Japanese dessert chef too.  It was clearly time for a return visit.

I got a lunch set for a little over $10, which included:

    - Cream of pumpkin soup.  This was a silky smooth pumpkin puree with just the right amount of cream to not make it too heavy but round out the flavours. I would have preferred if the croutons were a bit crunchier, but otherwise delicious!  Photo:  http://www.yelp.ca/use...

    - Chicken sandwich.  The perfectly moist chicken was inside of a crispy batter and served on a nicely toasted multigrain roll stuffed with a good amount of veggies and topped off with a bit of mayo and hot sauce. Delicious!   Photo:  http://www.yelp.ca/use...

    - Caramel banana cream roll.  The delicate roll was filled with a rich caramel cream with fresh chunks of banana. In true Japanese form, it wasn't overly sweet. Delicious!  Photo:  http://www.yelp.ca/use...

Quite an amazing lunch set with really friendly service.  I will continue to return - hopefully soon, and under better circumstances.

After hearing from Larry about what this little cafe is really supposed to be about, I thought I would give it another chance.

I do like the atmosphere here.  The staff are very friendly and quick.  So that's awesome.  They have funny little hand-painted signs about the place, which I found kind of endearing.

I stopped in for a quick lunch, and they were very prompt, and quick it was.  I had the salad nicoise.  Not bad.  I enjoyed it.  However, it seems their boiled eggs on the menu have all been replaced with a semi-scrambled omelet disk that gets cut in 4, which I found rather odd.  I'm not sure why there has been a change, and I don't know how this process is supposed to be easier for them, but it was okay.

I'd be down with trying this place again on another day.

    The 400th review!!

When my favourite things combine, it makes me very very happy. Cafe de L'Orangerie has executed this precisely by creating a matcha creme brulee!! It was what I had always dreamed of and it met my expectations. Creamy, with a hint of matcha flavour, I savoured every bite of this.

Back to the restaurant. Hidden away in a little mall, it's easy to miss. I'm glad I finally got a chance to try this place out. While there are still improvemnets to be made, I can see this being a regular joint for me. It's a small place, but with a very cozy feel. I also like the handpainted fruit tree on the wall.

On the menu: Yoshoku style Japanese items. Comfort food, done Japanese style. They have an array of sandwiches, as well as several main entrees, with a good selection of desserts (a green tea + red bean parfait!) I opted for the Spaghetti Carbonara plus a side of the Cream of Mushroom soup. The soup was piping hot, which was a good sign. It had the flavour of mushroom, but overall it was a little bland. Maybe a little more salt would have helped? Spaghetti carbonara-a good sized portion, with the pasta cooked al dente. The sauce was spot on-creamy, flavourful. Lots of bacon, and with my addition of the fried egg, it was delcious. One complaint though- I could taste burnt shallots & garlic within the pasta, which was off flavour and ruined my experience a little. Ending my meal off with the creme brulee was the highlight of the meal.

Service was great, a friendly waitress who made sure that everything was ok. I'm pretty sure I'll be back to try out their other specials-the chicken cutlet with the ratatouille sounded delicious. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. I'm looking forward to more matcha creme brulee!

If I only had a smart phone with the Yelp Ap I could have avoided this place!

My $4.82 chai latte made with the Tazo Costco jug was pretty lame.

But where else can you get french toast, atlantic salmon steak, and organic coffee all on the same menu?

After reading all the different reviews, decided to go give it a try.  Overall, the food was decent.  It's on the sweeter and more buttery side.  But that's a general trait of more Japanese western cuisine.

We tried the daily soup (which was corn soup that day), a spaghetti with tomatoe sauce, and a chicken and cream soup pot pie.

The corn soup was pretty tasty, but the portion was a but small.  The spaghetti was cooked just right.  And as mentioned earlier, the food is on the sweet and buttery side.  The pot pie was nicely done!  There were big pieces of chicken inside.  It was cooked so long that the meat just slid off the bones!  It tasted great with the rice!

I really went to try the dessert, but by the time I was done with food, I was too full to try the dessert.  Will have to go back another time!

Oh one thing I think they need to improve on is the ventilation of that place.  There wasn't much of it.  After having a meal there, your hair and clothing smells of that place!
