    I love Cafe Dario's 5 course dinner (see previous review) and I have to say their lunch is also delicious! There was a lot of entrees to choose from with most of the dishes between $12-$18, including the soup of the day and bread. You can get a pre fixe lunch menu for about $22 which includes a starter and dessert but the entree is pre-selected.

    The complimentary soup had shrimp in it and a slight bit of heat to it - delicious!

    The half rack of lamb with chocolate sauce ($17). It came with 3 lamb chop pieces and were cooked to a perfect medium rare. The crust was well seasoned and perfect. The sauce was a bit too chocolately but this was still a great dish. It came with some smashed potatoes, and pureed beets and a roasted zucchini. Everything including the veggies were cooked perfectly and well seasoned. The duck breast ($14) was cooked just past medium and had a great cumin flavour to it!

    The only complaint I have is the bread...it's the only letdown at this otherwise great restaurant. I understand it's complimentary but it's such a dry piece of bread that's feels like it's a day old. Anyhow, service is great and friendly there.

    You can go to a random restaurant chain like Earls or Moxie's for lunch and end up with the same price that I paid for lunch. But you definitely won't get the originality or quality that you get at Cafe Dario!

    One of the most unique and tasty dining experiences in Winnipeg!

    Colombian born chef Dario makes imaginative use of the flavors of south America in a converted house in Winnipeg's west end.

    It,s hard to review Dario because month to month the chef offers a different selection of dishes. For the incredibly reasonable prix fixe price of $35, you will, however get a choice of several appetizers and mains that riff on recent selections with soup, salad and dessert being the chef's choice.

    Hearty Bison Chili with Chilean Corn Crust has been a featured appy over my last few visits and I wouldn't hesitate to order it again.

    You'll also find dishes like oysters three ways-a classic mignonette sauce, lemon and hot sauce. Last time I opted for Alligator Empanadas with roasted tomato salsa. Everything was delcious but the gator did have a rubbery and overly assertive fish flavor unlike other preparations of it I've had at The Billabong for instance.

    Sometimes subtle, other times bold, Dario excels at marrying sweet and heat, acidity with savory. Take a perennial favourite, Pork tenderloin crusted with a chili lemon rub. It's somehow stuffed with roast pineapple and expertly cooked. It's not an easy technique to prevent the tenderizing enzymes of the pineapple from making mush out of the pork.

    Duck breast drizzled with a smoky hot Ancho chili sauce was perfectly cooked, a little bit rare in the middle.

    Expertly presented in artistic arrangements, most mains are served with ridiculously good garlic and herb mashed potatoes, and more often than not a medley of carrots, zucchini and beets. If you're lucky you' also get a dab of pickled tomato salsa. Dario's signature garnish is a hot chilli pepper and sprig of deep fried pasta. Both are abundantly edible, but a word of caution. The chilli is so hot it will obliterate your palate and rob you of the enjoyment of the rest of meal.

    Soup, salad and dessert are chefs choice and while that's might be a wildcard that disturbs some diners, have no fear...Dario has never disappointed. I  will point out however that the sweets are not a house specialty. They're small, somewhat unimaginative and simply presented, but ultimately enough to satisfy a sweet tooth.

    This is one of the best dining experiences I have had... ever.

    1. Pleasant and courteous staff;
    2. Simple menu; very clear about each item;
    3. Excellent variety; each person in our party, with vastly differing tastes, found several items worth trying;
    4. One of our party is vegetarian; upon learning this, our server offered to have a unique vegetarian entree made for him; this was done, and our companion said it was exceptionally good;
    5. Portions were just right - some might call them 'small,' but with these portions a five course meal did not cause us to feel bloated, rather we left feeling properly fed, and satisfied.
