...we have always wanted to eat at cafe brio.

made a 7:30 reservation on sunday night.
it wasn't super busy just a few tables here & there,
the decor is warm with tuscan colours and gorgeous
original art on the walls. we looked at the menu & then
decided to do the chef choice family style dinner experience.
for this we each paid 40 $ and it included 6 items to share
on the menu. we let our server know that the house made
charcuterie and the braised pork belly were very interesting
to us and the rest the chef chose.
we started with  a fiddle head & potato soup
finished with  truffle oil a generous amount of shaved lamb prosciutto
aged for a year(to die for) and a country style pate with cranberry
and pinenuts, house made pickled green beans, cukes and 2
spicy mustards. we were really impressed with the charcuterie course.
everything made and cured in house...yum!
next came a caesar salad with a killer good dressing and thin
cornmeal cracker sheets and shaved grano padano.
for the mains we had angel hair pasta with asparagus and baby radishes,
a perfect salmon with some sautéed veg & a raspberry sause and the
braised pork belly with little jerusalem artichokes, wild mushrooms and
delicious pan juices. i was really stuffed, i couldn't really appreciate
the pork belly the way i should have but you get the idea.

Cafe brio came up slightly short for me in my first experience. It's redeeming features come in the form of friendly service and the promise of better things to come.

We ate here during Dine Around, a fantastic promotion in Victoria, and were looking forward to a splendid meal due to countless recommendations. For appetizer I had the pear and Gorgonzola green salad and was disappointed to find a sparse few slices of under ripe pear and an almost overwhelming serving of blue cheese vinaigrette. Not a salad to remember for positive reasons. For my main I tried the seared albacore tuna with mushrooms and greens and was disappointed to say the least. The tuna came in what can be summarized as a broth with a scant selection of poached mushrooms and steamed leaves. The Tina itself was seared nicely but unimaginative and over salted.

The dessert however was magnificent. An apricot tart accompanied with rich creamy vanilla ice cream and an orange demi-glaze. The meals last attempt at leaving me slightly satisfied was a success.

Cafe Brio can be happy to know that despite this disappointment I will try again for better luck.

Staff were very friendly, sort of small restaurant so make sure you reserve. It was busy on a Saturday.
I am trying not to eat meat anymore so I found there wasn't the largest selection of vegetarian or fish dishes. But overall the menu seemed decent. There are no appetizers but you can order a half portion of any dish on the menu. They do offer some italian Salami with mustard, which sounded really good, but again I don't eat meat.
It was not as amazing as I thought it was, but it was still good. The desert was incredible (hot sticky date pudding) and the Squash soup was to die for!! So we will be back for sure.  oh ya and we loved the wine!!

From our inital greeting by the owner, Greg Hays to the aperizers, wine selection, main course and finally the cheese plate our experience was a culinary treat that stands as our best dinning experience in Victoria.

Off the beaten  path, a 15 minute walk from the town center, Cafe Brio is a rustic Italian oasis sandwiched tightly between non nondescript buildings. The front patio encased in creeping vines beckons you in.  In our conversation with Greg we learned the restaurant was built to his a co-owner Silvia Marcolini's design some 20 years ago during the biggest snow Victoria has ever seen.

Its high ceiling, earth tones and subtle lighting transport you immediately back to an Italian tratoria.  The atmosphere is "vivacious" reflective of its name "Brio" and its owners.  Chef Luarie Munn has created a superb menu of fresh ingredients from local farms sure to please knowledgeable foodies.

Many of the servers have worked at Cafe Brio for over a decade and are very knowledgable of the food and wine parings.  Our server suggested a Querciabella Chianti which proved to be an excellent choice.  Both Greg and Silvia visit Italy yearly to bring back new ideas and interesting wines.

We started with 2 stuffed olives followed by an antipasta selection that include a fantastic Boudin Noir blood sausage and a chicken liver parfait pate both homemade.  We then both had the pasta Bolognese which was perfectly cooked al dante. We finshed with a cheese tray of  Farm House Cheddar and La Baquette de Kerneval (french cow).

All in all a fantastic expereince and a "must visit" if you're in Victoria.

So... my friend chose this place and our hotel concierge also confirmed it is a foodie's must while in Victoria.

It is French so in line with the theme of the cuisine, the portion sizes are also French. But the food is great.

We started with some of their homemade salumi and proscuitto. Tasty - the proscuitto is aged 18 months and was quite salty but one thing that we absolutely appreciated but never had was the pickled green beans with a kick - some red chili pepper flakes. Tangy, crunchy with a kick to offset the salty cured meats.

Chilled bean soup with chunks of dungeness crab was cool and refreshing with minty flavor. Lovely way to start the meal!

My friend had the pasta with beef which had multiple chunks of tender beef with seared exterior and al dente pasta. The 1/2 order was very filling and generous. My 1/2 order of the rockfish was a tad small - good thing my friend shares!

Service was impeccable! All visitors should go!

How often do you have a meal where everything tastes just right, comes out at the right time and staff make you feel welcome.

This was our experience on Saturday. And I love places that allow you to do half orders ...no food wasted!

We ordered the romaine hearts, vegetables, halibut and sausage - and each dish come out with the right assists of veggies and broth. The goat cheese polenta w/sausages was beyond decadent.

The dessert of white chocolate gelato and chocolate mouse covered in toffee crunchy bits was an incredible finish to the whole thing.

Out waitress was distant but great, ambiance is welcoming, and it was great to see so many kids being accommodated.

We came here for dine around with another couple. The service was good, but sadly the food was nothing special. Not bad, just totally not memorable, creative or exciting in any way. The drinks were also not very good. I hadn't been before, but based on this being their marketing menu to bring you back, I definitely won't be.

I don't give 5 stars lightly, but this place was amazing! Walked through a torrential downpour from our hotel to get here and were given a warm welcome by the friendly people here. Our waiter was great - we ordered the family dinner, which is like the chef's tasting menu and once he learned what the chef was preparing for our mains, he gave us some great wine recommendations to go with.

great cocktail list, too - i had a mule that was made with rhubarb bitters, yum! the bathrooms are funny - there are 3: ladies, men, and "either or", haha. lights are dimmed around 6 or so and everyone is given little flashlights to peruse the menu with! very romantic. my husband and I enjoyed it very much.

our family meal was a LOT of food for 2 people, so don't fill up on the delicious bread that's put in front of you after you've sat down. 6 courses (not including dessert) include 3 appetizers and 3 mains. All seems to be specials from the constantly-changing menu for the day: mussels (so tender and briny), squash soup with some delicious bacon-flavored layer at the bottom and a maple foam, and the most delicious romaine lettuce I have ever tasted. I like tangy and sour things, and this dressing is making my mouth water RIGHT NOW! Very flavorful, served with slivers of aged cheese and some thin, crispy flatbread bits. So good!

the mains we got were sous vide chicken with a mustard sauce, served with cabbage. carmelized onion soup ravioli (the soup was in the inside!) - these were so amazing. All the flavors were just INTENSE. It was great. And finally rockfish served with peppers and onion, roasted fennel, and a few pillow-like gnocchi. This was served with a puy lentil vinagrette which was very subtle. I liked the tangy vinegar element of course :)

the wine we chose to go with all these dishes was a sauvignon blanc from the okanogan valley. it went really well with everything. we got a carafe of wine, which i love that they offer here. There are many wines by the glass, carafe, half-bottle and full bottle, as well as all the interesting cocktails they serve.

the night we had dinner here I was reading in the local paper about Cafe Brio being perfect for date night, and they were right.

we were so stuffed that we didn't try any dessert. sad! but we'll be back!

Yes, it's true, I actually do get off Salt Spring, and when I do I love to try new restaurants.    One that is always a repeat visit for me, though, when in Victoria, is Cafe Brio, on Fort Street.    Whether it's the summer season or a rainy winter day, it always seems to be sunny at Cafe Brio...must be that inspiring skylight!   Delicious food...good wine list...love the ambiance of the room...the paintings filling the wall space do change...great staff & Greg and his wife, who take turns welcoming you to their exceptional restaurant are always friendly & interested in how things are with you.    A "home away from home" for me...I know there are other great restaurants in Victoria, but Cafe Brio is a repeat for me!

Folks, this is as good as it gets--especially for the price.  Okay, I'm pretty sure that you could drop $100/person for a Michellin-starred dinner, not including alcohol.  But a few nights ago, we went here and spent less than $50/person...INCLUDING tax and tip for a truly first rate dining experience.

The atmosphere here is not that of your oftentimes more typical, loud, conversation-filled Italian restaurant.  Brio is dimly-lit, with medium-tall booths filled with patrons engaged in hushed conversations.  Service is friendly and perfectly paced.  Our waiter gave us plenty of time (but not too much) to make menu decisions, and made helpful suggestions.

As far as I'm concerned, the standout dish of the evening was my handmade-and-cut duck bolognese.  Imaginative in its use of ground duck instead of lamb or beef, the ragu lightly coated the housemade paparadelle.  The duck was supremely rich and added a nice unctuous texture to the dish.  The sauce had notes of sage to give it an earthy feel.  I swung and hit on pairing this with an Okanagan valley Pinot Noir.  I would eat this seven nights a week and twice on Sundays.

While not as magical on the palate, Brio won points for imagination from me on my wife's caramelized onion soup ravioli.  For this dish, the kitchen actually "stuffs" the consomme inside the ravioli.  Meanwhile, the caramelized onion that we thought would be the ravioli filling was plated beneath the little homemade pillows.  Thus, when we cut open the ravioli, the consomme poured out to mix with the caramelized onion, creating a nice, rich broth without being the least bit heavy.

For me, the only dish that could have been considered a slight miss was my fish course, in which the fish was a touch over done.  The gnocchi, however, have forever changed my perspective on how gnocchi should be cooked; the standard has been raised.

I could not have been more pleased with this meal, and feel that Cafe Brio is more than deserving of the praise heaped upon them.  The dishes are imaginative enough without seeming to try too hard or straying too far from the roots of Italian cooking.  But because of the witty cooking, they are incredibly interesting visually and to the palate.  I very much hope to return one day.

Very nice dinner here for special occasion. Casual, relaxed environment but the service started out a haphazardly. The second course was delivered before we'd finished the first and then we were not offered  second glasses of wine for a long time after the first were finished. After that things settled down. A huge advantage is the option of most if not all of the dishes on the menu at either half or full portion. Everything we ate was delicious, fresh and imaginative. Extensive wine bottle list and decent local wines by the glass as well. Would definitely recommend the restaurant.

Couldn't eat the over salted food. Can't believe this place thinks it is all that. Nice waitress, but rude owner/manager. Ick. Could they have been having a bad night? I just don't have any idea how their night could be so horrible just the one time. I can't go back.
We received dirty (stinky!) glasses with our wine, and when we asked for new glasses they made a big embarrassing scene. Really? You can't just get us new glasses? I know, you probably think I am some kind of crank, but not really. I love lots of restaurants and am able to give the benefit of the doubt when I've only been once. But this place? No way.

Went here after a recommendation from our B&B.So delicious! I decided to try a tapas style meal and had the stuffed olives, romaine hearts salad(1/2 order) and the salumi course of coastal salami, bresaola smoked meat, and cottechino served hot.The cottechino was out of this world!Pair that with a glass if the Grenache wine and it made for a culinary delight! My dining partner had the 1/2 order of pheasant which he described as being incredibly tasty! We decided to share a dessert plate consisting of a vanilla creme brûlée, the most chocolately tasting chocolate truffle, biscotti, and a sorbet.Yum! This was paired with a lovely muscat.Coffee was hot and had a nice roasted mocha flavour. The restaurant itself is warm and inviting.Staff is pleasant and attentive.I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Oh Cafe Brio how we love you! This was my third time going to Cafe Brio and it was incredible yet again. It was our second night of three straight nights of four course French dinners in Victoria and it definitely stepped it up a notch from Brasserie the night before. Whereas Brasserie is meant to be more accessible, Cafe Brio is rustic and has more personality. It isn't a jacket only restaurant though so I still think it would be accessible to a reasonable number of people. Being served food in what is basically a beautiful house sure doesn't hurt.

I started off with the salumi appetizer. I tried the lamb prosciutto (6 months old), chicken liver parfait, and the Italian pork pate. The lamb was a little tough but tasted great combined with the mustard and sides. The parfait was absolutely incredible and made me feel like I was eating dessert. I'm pretty sure I took my first bite and then kept shoveling it into my mouth until I was finished. The pate was also good and combined well with the mustard.

And then I had what was probably my favorite appetizer ever, the cocoa butter sauteed saanich asparagus (small plate). It was served with poached egg yolk, lemon & white chocolate cream. Now I'm just going to assume that reading that you are salivating just as much as I was when I ordered it. And I have to say the sauce was a bit warm but it went perfect with the asparagus. But once you cracked open the egg and combined it all together it was heaven. There is no way for me to describe what it is like to have cocoa butter asparagus combined with egg yolk and a white chocolate cream so you are just going to have to go try it and thank me later.

For my entree I had the heirloom tomato poached rockfish which came with sous vide fingerling potatoes, rapini, roast mushroom, and chilis. Although I enjoyed the fish I think the highlight was the mushroom and potatoes combined with the rapini and chilis. I was also very happy that the heirloom tomato sauce was not strong and had a light tomato taste.

For dessert I tried the warm chocolate & liquid caramel cake with mint gelato and vanilla whipped cream. The mint gelato tasted just like the mint my dad used to pick out of our back yard and serve with whatever Indian dish he was preparing. The cake itself was amazing with the caramel sauce being light but combining perfectly with the cake. This dessert went really fast.

We also had the house made chocolate truffles. I have to say I have had the truffles on a previous visit and they were round and absolutely mind blowing. The truffles we got this trip were rectangular and good but not anywhere near as good as before. And the salt on top of the truffle did not combine well at all.

As usual the service at Cafe Brio helped make the night. We were well taken care of by a very friendly staff that obviously cares about the food they serve people and how that food is served. If you want a bit of a more rustic French restaurant, with great and consistent food, and friendly service definitely check out Cafe Brio.

The reviews of this place were full of promise, but the reality wasn't quite as good.  Despite our reservation, we had to wait about 40 minutes.  The host blamed a table that would not leave, but after waiting for our food for 60 minutes, and the dessert taking another 60 minutes, it was clear that it was the service that was the issue, not the diners.  Our meal took 3 hours altogether, much of it spent waiting.  The food was ok, but unremarkable.  Will not go back to try this place again unless it was a quiet night.

My first impression after recently spending a special anniversary here was that although it was excellent, I am in no rush to go back. Overall everything was quite delicious. The service was attentive and the ambiance was romantic, minus an unruly child at a nearby table. I even felt it did emit a feeling of being whisked away to another country.
We started by sharing the corn soup, which was a myriad of beautiful flavours I had never experienced before. Just to warn you this soup is a puree, so don't expect the crunch of corn. Five stars for the soup!
Next came a half dozen lavender and lemon kushi oysters. This was truly the highlight our meal. Kushi oysters are by far my favourite of all mollusks and anything lavender flavoured will steal my heart.

With Brio's entrees you can either choose the full portion at full price or go with a half portion for half the price. As per our server's advice we decided to opt for the half portions so we could experience more variety. My favourite was the braised duck leg with chicken sausage. The duck easily fell off the bone in the most mouth watering manner.
We also enjoyed the lamb as well as the sirloin steak and braised shoulder. My only complaint would be that after sharing two appies and three half portion mains I was still not quite full. The duck for example that came with ravioli actually only came with one lonely, very small ravioli. I believe it was the lamb that came with the gnocchi and again there were maybe five or six pieces of gnocchi on our plate.

The sticky toffee pudding with vanilla bean ice cream and some sort of gooey toffee sauce would be worth going back for.

I did enjoy myself at Cafe Brio and the food was delicious, plus we did indulge in several yummy $9 martinis. Unfortunately for the price we paid and the smorgasbord of restaurants available to us in this beautiful city, I would imagine it will be some time before I make my way back here. Perhaps just a little visit for some oysters and dessert, but alas the menu is ever changing

Stumbled upon Brio last night - Friday night without a reservation, no problem, I was quickly seated and had a wonderful meal. Started with the house made prosciutto - (a bit salty but still better than most ), and the Italian pate served with house made mustard (the stone ground was a bit strange) and pickled goodies. Main course was the lamb feature - braised  lamb shank with beans. I left with a happy and full belly.

Went back again tonight (Saturday) still with no reservation and even though they were expecting a full house  I was accommodated. The house made lomo and salami were spot on as well as the striploin with mushroom (a few bits of  matsutake made this a stand out ) flatiron ragout (beef with more beef) - and I left with another happy belly

My only regret is that I won't be in Victoria tomorrow night for another meal at Cafe Brio

    Oh MAN.
This was THE BEST meal I have EVER HAD. Period.

    The ambiance was perfection.

Each item of food we tried was made so intentionally, I couldn't help but savor EVERY SINGLE bite slowly...

We decided to try many things, so we opted for the small version of each plate. We had the crab spaghettini paired with the riesling (OH THE RIESLING); the lamb feature (cannot put into words...); frites with house aioli (no words...); housemade mortadella salami and italian pate (MMMMM); as well as the field greens salad. Chocolate mousse for dessert...

This food was almost unbearably good.

I would travel from Seattle to Victoria JUST TO EAT HERE.

One downside: They do get a little slow with service when it is busy.

Food!  They have 1/2 servings, which allow for tasting more tasty items.  We started with the special gazpacho -- wow!  Perfect for the summer evening.  Next, we had the octopus -- different!  I've had octopus in lots of different styles -- this was new.  I'm not sure how to describe it, but it was delicious -- grilled and and tasting of both fire and ocean, and very tender.

The service was friendly and knowledgeable, but we had to flag our server a few times -- it was packed on a Tuesday eve, but we got a table without reservations.

We had the chef's choice dinner for two. Wonderful selection of first courses (3) and second courses (3). Nice rounded menu with fish, beef, chicken and pasta dishes. Wine selections matched well with the menu.

Hostess was great and we had a wonderful time.

This is the kind of restaurant that you wish you could take back to your own neighborhood.  We walked in without a reservation and despite a full house the snuck us to a table very quickly. From that point on we were treated like old friends, rather than tourists. Gregory's High Jack was a blend of bourbon with a bit of cinnamon bitters. I was jealous. Lamb prosciutto was fantastic as were his duck and my halibut.  The only failing was our drinks continually arrived half way through each course. Worth visiting, especially if you're visiting.

I am mixed between giving Café Brio 3 stars or 4.  While the food was good and their vanilla crème brulee and wine pairing (Venturi Schulze #3) was excellent, I always expect more from a fine dining place.

If I am going out and spending a lot on a meal, I expect the food to be of a certain caliber and to have a certain wow factor.  Upper scale restaurants need to blow me away to get a five star rating.

I wish I could give half stars.  I would definitely go back to Café Brio but I've eaten at places that have better food I've given four stars to (in the fine dining category).

Anyway, their homemade charcuterie is pretty good and I already mentioned dessert...seriously excellent wine paring!

Dinner was average.  I  had the handcut papardelle pasta with sausage ragu.  It was good but I can make better pasta at home and ragu for that matter.  I did like the rustic quality of the dish.  Perfect comfort food for a cold winter evening.  My mom had a lamb with which we both agreed was average as well.

I've decided on 4 stars but Café Brio in my mind is a strong 3.5.  Not really a 4 and 3 is too low and I do recommend this place; go here before going to any of the tourist traps along the water please!

What an amazing dinner! This restaurant is a little gem, tucked back from the street - it felt like we were on a European vacation.

This was a delightful meal. When we came in, the host was attentive, nice and very welcoming. When being seated, he gave us our choice of different dining rooms/tables. Service was impeccable and everyone was so friendly. The ambiance was great - well lit but very warm - a rustic feel. Local artwork on the walls. The room gets a bit loud with the acoustics, but it still maintains a quaint feel (especially in the front dining room).

The food was outstanding, and the option to order entrees in a smaller size allowed us to taste more. We had an amazing English pea soup, which had various layers and textures full of unique flavors that complimented each other fabulously. We then had homemade agnolotti filled with butternut squash and goat cheese. The pasta (made in-house) was delicious and cooked perfectly. We then shared two smaller portioned seafood entree items - the grilled yellowtail (which came with a delicious summer squash salad) and albacore tuna (a duo, with both tartare and a seared piece). The tuna duo came with such a unique and fabulous cucumber gelato! Incredible.

For dessert we had the sampler plate, which was insane (especially with our Tawny Port!).

This was a fabulous meal, in an amazing atmosphere with impeccable service. We will definitely visit whenever we are back on the island.

Cheers to the team at Cafe Brio!

Through Yelp, I found Café Brio in searching for a unique, intimate and locally-focused dining experience during my brief stay in Victoria.

Selecting Café Brio was truly a winning choice. From the friendliness of the entire staff; the charming and intimate decor and ambience; the extensive wine list; and the broad, unique and delicious menu with its locally-grown and sourced focus, the entire experience was a pleasure from start to finish.

I would readily return to Café Brio for a subsequent meal and would heartily recommend it to anyone traveling to Victoria.

We had a very good dinner here on a Monday night. Service, food and wine all very good. The date 'pudding' was delish. We would recommend it, and would go again.

Nice room, attentive service, even on a busy Friday evening (with Grad happening).  Wine list features BC wines, although a reasonable selection of international wines available, but some great BC wines to be had at decent prices (we had the 06 Black Hills Nota Bene which was great). Food was good, but not great. My wife had a piece of halibut that had a more fishy odor (and taste) than in normal...she probably should have sent it back. I had a veal chop that was wonderful, and my mother had the duck breast, which she enjoyed greatly. Half portions on most items a definite plus. Deserts were good, if not spectacular.  All in All, worth another visit.

Oh my goodness! My husband and I are foodies. We love to eat. We love to eat in special places while on holiday. A recent wonderful find in Victoria, B.C. was Cafe Brio. Simply wonderful. Great ambiance, incredibly friendly, lovely and knowledgeable staff. The owner, Greg, really knows his stuff and is great fun to chat with. It's obvious his staff adore him as the good vibes spill over the restaurant.
The small bar is great and I highly recommend the Pepper martini. Unique and wonderful. The food - oh, the food. Ever had a 45 minute poached egg that you don't need to wait 45 minutes for? Heaven. I could actually hear my husband humming while sopping up the custardy egg (with homemade bread straight from from the oven). All courses were first rate and perfectly prepared with wine pairings that fit like a glove.
    We will definitely be back.

small, charming, touch of dress up elegance but still comfortable-food is quite good, real care in presentation but expensive for the amount you got-there was a feeling of stinginess disguised as gourmet-portions small the glasses of wine filled to 1/4 the wine glass-it felt like they were squeezing out every last penny of profit-to bad for it put the only bad taste of the evening
