Review from Emily P.
Five stars for old town quebec dining - especially relative to a lot of the other options around this part of town. Just far enough off the main drag to feel quaint but still an easy walk from most anywhere.
Went here on a Friday night after too many lunches/dinners of the same ol French onion soup and steak frites and were delightfully surprised. The menu was short but had great options for all tastes.
I had the cream of asparagus soup followed by a half order of the buffalo stuffed ravioli with wild mushrooms. My husband had a half order of the salad with sautéed chicken livers then the cod dish. All four items were delicious. The soup was well seasoned and very flavorful without being too creamy. The chicken liver salad had about 5 livers and the balsamic salad dressing cut the richness which was great. Both main courses were delicious and we both cleaned our plates. The portion sizes were spot on. Just enough to fill you up while leaving room for desert. We had the creme brûlée (with khalua and baileys) and the profiteroles. The only complaint we had about the entire meal was that the creme brûlée custard could have been slightly thicker - the flavor was amazing though and made up for it. All in all a great cozy place if you want to get at least a little off of the heavily trafficked areas of the old town. -

It was bound to happen. You cannot be in any major city for 6 days and not have one terrible experience. Well this was ours.
If you are looking for a place run by Satanic Gypsies then this is your Bistro The place looked inviting (for a second or third choice) as Toast and Panache were booked and both are excellent.
We left our son's stroller outside and entered an empty dining room (as everyone was outside enjoying the night air). We were greeted by Witch Hazel herself, silk due-rag and all. She proceeded to ask me if I had read the menu before entering, she then repeated herself again as to suggest that this "bistro" was too high end to bring a child. I then informed her we were staying at Auberge St-Antoine and had been dining at Panache and Toast for the previous two evenings. Those restaurants are 10x the restaurant as this Devil's Diner.
Anyway, I digress. The only table inside then intervened and stated the food was wonderful and to join them (after I specifically asked Witch Hazel if the food was any good - because she was clearly trying to run us off). She then broke down and seated us. That's where it gets good.
She left us sitting for 20 minutes without even taking a drink order. We then informed her that we were ready to order dinner but she was more concerned with fixing the menu after my son got a little bored and took the cover off of it. She then disappeared again into the back to adjust the menu.
It was at that point we said enough, collected our belongings (and my Platinum American Express) and left.
Again, this was the ONLY horrible experience in what is a beautiful and romantic city filled with fantastic dining experiences and wonderful hotels. Most places are welcoming and offer stupendous service. But NOT HERE!!!
I would suggest checking the kitchen before ordering, just in case the soup du jour is Hansel and Gretel consume. ;) -

Question: "What does Heaven taste like?"
Answer: the goat cheese and asparagus savory crepe from Cafe Bistro Du Cap!
Even if you don't like goat cheese or Asparagus or crepes even, your whining annoying friend who complained the WHOLE way up to Canada will shut up, smile and say: "Oh YEEEAAAHH!!!!... What's this called again Claude?"
Seriously, I speak with some authority here since the 4 main reasons I go to Quebec are:
1. The Crepes
2. The Crepes
3. Did I mention the Crepes!
4. The Architecture of the old city is not bad either but not as good as the crepes
You have never had Crepes until you come to Quebec! They do Crepes like Chinese people do Dim Sum and White people do Heavy Metal. It's just in the Genes or something. And this place, in my humble opinion, has the best Crepes in all Quebec! Maybe because the Chef is like a cooking version of Rain Man, or that is (or seems) a mom and pop place more concerned about their business reputation then the bottom line (Yeah...your not in America anymore), or that the freshest ingredients are brought in daily, or just some je ne sais quoi quality that can't be duplicated. But stop here on any trip to Quebec! (That's what I do) particularly if you want to mollify a very annoying friend who you will never take anywhere ever again.
One Tip for improvement tho: When ever I come here (or anywhere else in Quebec) the staff thinks I am Quebecois and start talking to me in French. FYI: Not all Americans are fat and loud. Some of us are just loud. So next time you meet a tall, skinny guy, with a big European head, don't assume he is one of you and say to him; "Je déteste les Américains. Ils sont tous tellement grosse et stupide." He will just leave you a petite gratification :) -

Everything was brilliant.
Food: I went for it - and have nothing but delight about ordering the salad with chicken liver grilled in balsamic vinegar. The cream of asparagus soup was a wonderful start. My only regret, sharing my pear and chocolate crepe with my husband....
Service - warm, friendly and funny. -

This was my favorite meal in Quebec. The space is small, simply decorated, inviting, and cozy. Its off the main tourist drag on a quite street which was great. The staff, including the owner, was very friendly and attentive.
We had the Beef Carpaccio, Buffalo Ravioli, Leg of Lamb, and Coffee Creme Brulee--Everything was fantastic!!! The flavors were wonderful and the everything was perfectly cooked, especially the lamb. The butter, cream sauce on the buffalo ravioli sauce was amazing!!
They also made the best cafe au late I've ever had and the coffee creme brulee was the perfect end to our meal. I will definitely be back next time I'm in the city.Listed in: Best Restaurants, Quebec City

Stopped in for a late breakfast. Both of us had different crepes with smoked salmon and they were very tasty. We ate outside but did go inside to see and thought it was lovely.

Really 2 1/2.
Attentive service and so-so food. Shepherds pie light on vegetables, crepe was too heavy until partially unwrapped and excess tossed aside and then OK (chicken filling included gristle), cream of vegetable soup was excellent. Really 2 1/2 stars. -

Amazing.
We slipped into two of the last seats at the bar for dinner service after finding our first choice restaurant completely full. This was a happy thing.
From the beginning service was wonderful, (even though I rudely answered the french questions in English, I'm sorry! Date's an american and likes to know what's going on). Pleasant, attentive, and fun.
The food was french country with a twist, just what I want when I come up to Quebec city for the weekend. I had the duck with red cabbage and mash, he had the leg of lamb with couscous. The wine was fabulous, the coffee was fabulous (I ordered a coffee, got an allongee, they might be mind readers), desert was perfect. As a bonus? Completely reasonable prices for the quality. -

Absolutely perfect. We were surprised to find such a hidden gem. I think it's a mom and pop shop. We were a bit hesitant at first, since we were the only customers there around 1pm but we decided to trust the reviews from yelp and tripadvisor and give this place a try anyway. Thank god we did.
The crepes were extraordinary. One of the members in our party said the he's "never had anything like it". I had the goat cheese and asparagus savory crepe. Just fantastic! Make sure you get a couple of crepes to try. I really regret I didn't get another one now. :( -

This is a true find in what can be a city bustling with tourists. The food was perfectly prepared and beautifully served. A quiet respite for replenishment.

we went to this restaurant after reading the reviews on yelp. we dined at six on a thursday and the place was empty. a few other diners braved the rain, but mostly we had the place to ourselves. the decor is very nice, the colors light and bright. the green salad had a wonderful tarragon vinegrette. i had the buffalow raviolis with the wild mushroom cream sauce. yum! my companion had the shepards pie which she really enjoyed. the chocolate mousse was excellent. i dont understand why this restaurant wasnt packed. the food was really quite good and the prices reasonable. this is the first restaurant review i have ever written, but felt compelled to write because i feel perhaps the one bad review from the person with the young child is scaring people away.

The service was a little dodgy but, the food was marvelous. The braised lamb shank was delicious!
