My first encounter with Cafe Zen was happenstance. I arrived very early to work and decided to go for a stroll. After realizing I was seriously hungry and had forgotten to grab a bite before I left my place, the word BREAKFAST on the awning above the window shone to me like a beacon (bacon?)... The unsuspecting business tucked between 1st and 2nd Ave on Yew Street appeared from the outside to be just another business. But once I stepped foot inside the temple of breakfast, there was no turning back. The smells had my belly churning with hunger as I perused the menu. First time ever I had a go at the crab avocado eggs b.... And oh my my, how outofthisworld it was. The smoothies are thick and delicious as well.

The speed of the food arrival always blows my mind. The service is fast-paced, but do take your sweet time polishing off a plate of avocado tomato bagel melt and a side of fruit or potatoes or what have you...

    The best breakfast. Hands down.

I used to come here a lot but lately the staff here has been  getting grumpier and less attentive. Not only that, it the last year alone the food quality has gone down so much. For the price I'm paying, I might as well go to the other breakfast joints in Kits.

The last time we went, we were left unattended for 10 minutes with empty plates. We asked for the bill and once again we were left ignored with our credit card on the table. When I finally got one of the girls to notice she just snapped at me saying "The terminal is being used, you can go up to the counter if you want - it'll be faster" as if she had acknowledged us. She never once looked at us.

Don't get me wrong, there's a few nice staff there but most of the girls seem newer or they just really hate their jobs. I'm not sure if I'll be stopping by anymore.

Oh I love Cafe Zen! I drive all the way there from Coquitlam when I crave bennies!
It is a pretty casual breakfast brunch place in Kits area, close to the beach.
If you go on the weekends, there is usually a line up but believe me, it is worth the wait.
The service is fast and the menu has lots of options.
My favorites are the bennies, they have been perfectly cooked every single time for the last 4 years I have been going to this place.  Their hollandeise sauce is delicious and what I love the most is that I can order half and half portions so that I can try 2 different bennies at the same time.
I really like the california bennies which have tomato and avocado (great vegetarian option). If you feel like seafood, they have the BC salmon bennies and the crab meat bennies.  And if you want to go for something more breakfast style, I love their bacon-mushrooms bennies (yum!).
Even their regular brewed coffee is good.
They also have pancakes (nice and fluffy), waffles, french toast, regular eggs with toast and even fruit and yogurt, so whatever your breakfast craving is, they have it on the menu.
Pricewise, good value for your meal! :)
    Check it out!

Just went back to Cafe Zen!

My advice: Get there early in the morning to beat the traffic!

The florentine-mushroom eggs Benedict is still delicious as ever!

So apparently there's an entire mini-ecosystem out on Yew (between Cornwall and 2nd) that I never knew existed.  We went for a hipster's breakfast, and chose this location out of several choices in the immediate vicinity.

There was a lineup that steadily grew.  Parking isn't too bad but you may have to walk a bit on the street.

The menu isn't bad at $10 for eggs benedict or $9 for an omelette.  For extra eggs, add $5, and for sausage/bacon/ham + hash browns, add $2.50.

I had the Italian omelette (chorizo sausage, tomato, cheese), with sausage and hash browns.  It was actually larger than I expected.  The sauce was just right and not overwhelming, and there were large chunks of meat.  The hash browns were fresh and crispy, but not drenched in oil.  So were the sausages.  I was pleasantly surprised.

Ambience is definitely hipster-like.  It has a bit of the "vintage" diner" feel (anyone remember Bino's?) but trendier.  It looks like they T-shirts with their restaurant logo (a Chinese character that is unfortunately written incorrectly *cough*), and the walls are covered with framed photos of people going to random places such as the Equator or Malaysia with the T-shirt.  Talk about street cred.

My only complaint is that the service is slow, and that the tables are set too close.  But one could argue this is part of the charm.

Definitely one of the better and more reasonably priced breakfast places out there.  Recommended.

I was very surprised how busy this place was, given how mediocre our food was. (My friend who lives in the neighbourhood assures me it's very consistently mediocre.) I had a shrimp & avocado benny with hash browns, and everything tasted like it had come out of a package.

I could have overlooked the ...adequate food if the place had a bit of charm, but I think the entire staff has a "no smiling" policy. There were at least four or five waitstaff on the go and they all seemed disinterested and impersonal.

There's lots of better brunches in the city, and I doubt I'll waste my time on this one again.

Until last year, I'd never in my life had eggs Benedict. Once that whole new world opened up for me, it was suggested I check out Cafe Zen.

Cafe Zen does eggs Benny right - and they have over a dozen kinds to prove it! Further, you can mix n' match your Benny order, grab a half order or sub your home fries for tomato slices (which I always do).

The portions are hearty, the coffee is tasty and the service always comes with a smile. Cafe Zen can get busy - particularly on weekend mornings - but the wait is never long.  It's definitely one of my top go-to breakfast spots!

I know people lose their s*it over breakfasts and greasy spoons. Fair enough. But for me, the quality has to be there. I didn't want a big breakfast when I went here so had the fruit with yoghurt and granola. I mean pretty hard to mess that up. First of all, it was a bit pricey. Second, some of the fruit was not looking so hot. I specifically left several large pieces because they were kind of brown and stale and just turned me off to be honest.

My friend had a full breakfast...waffles and ham etc. It looked ok but nothing about really made me want any and i LOVE waffles. In fact I salivate at the mention of waffles, rarely turn them down and have been known to dabble in some waffle making in the wee morning hours...

But clearly I must be missing something because this place was packed. I like that it is unpretentious and basic, but I can't really excuse low food quality.

I may have to give it one more go but until then...2 stars.

Cafe Zen is reliable. It's brunch is no Twisted Fork or The Reef, but it's good.

I usually go for a bed of steamed spinach, two poached eggs (free range, obviously) with slices of avocado and tomato. On Sunday, post wedding and STARVING, I had a classic eggs benny and home fries. Hit the spot nicely. I also recommend the fruit and yogurt (to share). It's huge and yummy. They'll even throw in some granola for you.

I assure you that although the line up looks intimidating, it's not that bad. You typically won't wait longer than 5-10 mins for a table. Turn over is high.

My hubby and I frequent cafe Zen for a post Sunday morning workout (yes, we are die hards).

(I just realized how many brackets I used in this review. I  must have been excited).

I think it is time to check in again and Update certain reviews. One of them is my beloved Cafe Zen!

So on this lovely, rainy sunday I ventured out to Kitsilano to pay them a visit. Long have I been looking forward already to try the delicious Egg's Florentine and French Toast! I should not be disappointed by the quality which was as always excellent!!

I have to say that the half orders are a nice feature but by no means are they financially worth it. The difference is a marginal 3$ and they seriously charged me 2.50$ for a side order of Toast even though I specifically ordered it to substitute the fries (I don't want to ruin a delicious breakfast with a load of fries BRRR).

It was not that full this morning, so a very good day to drive over.

Solid 4 Stars remain despite the bit of overcharging in the end. But I don't drive through the whole town to in the end let 2.50$ ruin the experience for me. ;-)

    Enjoy!!

    Cheers

    Famous for the Benny's!
And when it comes to brunchy goodness, eggs benny is high on my must-have list!

Super cool that you can order two of the same or mix it up with Benny combo's..you can try out a couple different kinds! I decided on the California Benny and opted to not go for a combo.

What else was I eyeing? The french toast (a friend ordered, i tasted...and it was soo goood!! definitely doing it next time)
as well as the waffles (my bf ordered...sooo yummy too! another one to put on the list to try!)

So, I get my California Benny...and its pretty good. Not fantastically awesome..but pretty darn good. so they get an A-ok yelp review...I look forward to a return so that maybe it can be increased ;)
or maybe its an excuse to have their french toast or waffles...heheheh

Our house guests wanted to take us for brunch so we strolled over to Yew.  It was a 25 minute wait for a table at Abigail's so we went next door to Zen.  We lucked out and they were setting a table for us.  This place turns over tables quickly and I think customers know not to linger over their 10th cup of coffee at Sunday brunch time.
I got the Eggs Benny with the Hollandaise on the side.  It really does help me to NOT eat all those delicious calories.
My 18 year old ordered the Lumberjack Plate which completely overwhelmed him with food.  Three huges pancakes, two eggs, three strips of bacon, etc.  He's a lean kid so barely made it through half.  They do have a lot of half order options so look for those if you're not a big eater.
Everyone else gobbled up their food and we were outta there pretty quickly to make way for the next group.  Prices are reasonable and the staff are nice.

I am a huge breakfast fan, doesn't matter what time or where I am, and I was in Vancouver staying with friends who took me to Cafe Zen.

When we arrived I was pretty hungry and slightly intimidated by the line in front of us but it moved very quickly and we were able to get a seat in no time. The speed of service blew me away, I ordered a fruit salad and bacon, so the timing of that wasn't surprising, but the bennys for my friends were super speedy and looked amazing.

The fruit salad was a bit on the expensive side, but that's what I get for ordering an out of season dish.

The coffee was good, they had juice and the atmosphere was enjoyable. Our waitress was super speedy and seemed friendly. I'd recommend it!

On my quest for the perfect hollandaise sauce to complement my taste for the perfectly poached egg, I tried out Café Zen.

They nailed the poached eggs in my benji-mushroom benny, but the hollandaise still lacks something. Perhaps it was the thickness or the sheer quantity. Next time (and there will be a next time for me) I will ask for sauce on the side.

The real surprise was the hashbrowns. They don't look like anything special - but they're somehow perfectly crisp on the outside and mushy on the inside.

My friend had the waffles - which I was pleasantly surprised with too. I'd suggest ordering a half order of waffles and something else if you're really hungry. 4 waffles, with butter, syrup and fruit is a lot o' bread-i-ness.

Looks like Sunday's are for Spicy Ceasar: standard looking, but likely perfect for a hair of the dog moment.

The service was pretty good, especially for such a busy Sunday morning. Turnover was lightening quick. But we felt welcomed to linger: enjoying the random pics of people's holidays on the walls, old school Mariah Carey and Elton John on the radio, and the yum coffee.

This place has some real potential. I don't what it is about Cafe Zen that makes me feel like I'm at home, but Vancity needs more of it.

It's pretty Hollywood from an aesthetically pleasing point of view- everything just seems so... perfect. The perfect sized mug for my yogurt shake, the perfectly laid out table, the perfect pattern for a tablecloth and the piece de resistance, the most perfect-looking eggs benny that I have ever seen in my life. Hats off to the chef; how DO you get it so round?

However, oh how we all cringe when we see this conjunctive adverb, the food didn't speak to me in an overly impressive way. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, but I didn't stop mid-conversation to comment on how amazing it was either; it did its job of filling my hungry stomach and that was that.

I feel the need to comment on the yogurt shake that I had- it was quite bland for some reason. Despite its rich blueberry colour, I could hardly taste the blueberry; I was a bit disappointed for the price I paid for it. I had to add quite a bit of sugar to balance it out, but I do take ownership that perhaps it's just me who feels this way and the neighborhood of healthy West 4th moms might disagree.

Recommended Main Deal: Create your own eggs benny.

    Score: It's almost perfect.

I love breakfast. So...I was shocked to discover that this little gem was unbeknownst to me, considering I live in the area. I have many points about this establishment, so I believe that "point" form is appropriate for this review.

The Good: split dishes (you can order half Freedom Toast and half pancakes or two half-portions of eggs bennie...AWEsome), prompt coffee refills, hot waitresses, daily specials, cute patio, fast turnover, pleasantly kitschy decor, fast service, pure Maple syrup option, large portions

The Bad: full of pesky yuppies, a bit stuffy and cramped, small portions of syrup (I had to ask for two additional little dishes of syrup), often a wait to get a seat, decor needs updating a bit, seemed overstaffed (yes... I am complaining about this because the incessant chattering of the hot waitresses was mildly distracting)

I will definitely be back. This local, idiosyncratic cafe beats the crap out of any large restaurant like Denny's or Malone's or freakin' Milestones for brunch or breakfast. A good alternative to Sophie's.

Went to cafe Zen looking for a job - it was shut - menu sounded tasty though, so I went back the next Saturday morning and many weekend mornings thereafter. Cafe Zen 1, Me 0. Friends asked me for a good breakfast place when I'd first moved to kits, and I could only recommend Sophie's on 4th and Arbutus. Nothing against Sophies, but wish I had've known about Zen.

Best Eggs benny i've ever had. California benny never disappoints (how do you find avo's that good year round??) New servers aren't as trigger-happy with the coffee service as the last ones, but still a killer weekend brekky. Good deals early on week days too.

Don't be put off if there's a line up either.. Suck it up and wait ten minutes, you won't regret it.

    V good breakfast, BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    SERVICE IT'S TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE.

My baby (18 months old) a friend and I went there today.

Fist of all when we arrived the waiter came to the door and told me my stroller was too BIG and was going to gives us a table in the very back, omg I said- DO YOU HAVE HIGH CHAIRS? she responded omg yes.
isn't  It common sense that she offered that before I asked?

anyway-- I ask her to bring me one so my baby, my friend and I could sit on a nicer table by the window.

So she brings the high chair and I sat and put my baby right next to me. She comes immediately (wish she came as fast when I ORDERED THE COFFEE) to tell me to move the high chair coz it was on the fire exit ( it was NOT)  SO I HAD TO MOVE AROUND AND CHANGE SITS WITH MY FRIEND AND MOVE MY BABY.

She didn't have enough yet, so she took ages to take or order when she finally came i asked her to bring us coffee (with our meal) coffee NEVER CAME! when she finally made eye contact with me I asked her IF SHE COULD PLEASE BRING US coffee her answer was:
    NO!
YOU ORDERED COOFEE WITH your meal! and I said, omg I thought you will bring it right away (like in any other coffee shop in the world, specially when its busy they bring it to you to keep you entertain while your meal is ready) no you said WITH YOUR MEAL. (let's just say, she has no common sense at all)

Anyways, when she finally brought us the coffee I asked her if instead of CREAM she could bring us skim milk and sweetener and she did not even look at me when I was talking to her and responded yeah.
    It was so AWKWARD.
The people sitting behind us and the table next to us they both looked at me and smile with me rolling their eyes even one of them said to me, SHE MUST BE ON HER PERIOD! I HOPE SO-  I SAID, if not what an loser.

SO THE SKIM MILKED CAME and a different waitress brought it! YAY
HURRAY!!! :) THE GRINCH STOPED SERVING US, IT WAS A BIG RELIEF TO BE HONEST.

    A N Y W A Y :) :)

the food is very delicious and if that moody waitress did not work there would have been E X C E L L E N T!  shame on the grinch :(  booo

waffles are delicious, coffee very tasty and the eggs were awesome.

A-okay... I was expecting more since I've heard great things about the place.  Came here with a group of friends on the weekend with no wait.  Huge brunch/breakfast menu with a focus on bennies and eggs.

Service is minimal and decor is very basic and plain -coffee refills is the only check in once food is dropped off.  I enjoyed my Greek omelet (tomato, feta and green onion), but the hash browns are very plain and aren't crispy enough.

The rest of my friends had bennies and were happy with them, with a comment that the hollandaise sauce is quite a bit thicker than most.

Prices are average except for their fruit which I think is overpriced.

I don't think I'd come back and I definitely prefer Abigail's Party a couple of doors down.

The reason why this place gets "Yay! I'm a fan" out of me is not because of the benny's (which is their specialty) but because of their french toast!

If you're a fan of french toast with thick, pillowy bread, then you will love this*. The french toast is fluffy and chewy. Make sure you ask for the real maple syrup rather than the corn syrup. It makes all the difference in the world. My fave is to get a half order with a side of fruit (the full order is too big to finish - even for me and my cavernous stomach!).

I have never had the benny's here but they've got an extensive list. What I find really awesome is that you can mix and match your benny's. Great for variety!

*I was introduced to Cafe Zen on a first date about 7 years ago. He told me that the french toast here was the best in the city and swore me to secrecy. The guy and I didn't work out, but I gladly take this tip and share it with the Yelp community (hee).

I have only ever been to Zen for Sunday brunch and we keep going back, usually with the entire table ordering egg benedict because it is so good! The California benedict (with avocado and tomato) is popular among my friends while I love the peameal (Canadian back bacon) benedict. The meal comes with a good helping of potatoes, usually more than enough for me because I don't ever eat it all!

If you arrive after 10:30-11:00 am on a Sunday, expect to stand in line. It is always packed at that time!

Never have I ever ate at the same brunch place twice in a week!  Both times I had friends visitiing from out of town who craved benedicts!  I've never seen a place with a whole menu page dedicated to different benedicts AND you can mix and match any benedict as two half orders.

We ordered the crab (real crab), spinach, and mushroom bennys and all enjoyed it.  My friend orders the sauce on the side...which I'm going to start doing because yeah the hollaindaise sauce here while its good is thick and there's too much of it.

I like the homey feel of the place, it's laid back and casual.  The service both times was actually noticeably slow...water rarely came even though it was super hot outside.  It also took a while to take our order.  The prices aren't cheap but I'd say its reasonable for the portion and taste.   Awesome location though and that'll keep me coming back.

great combination of feta cheese, spinach, poached egg, and ham on english muffin drizzled in their awesome hollandaise!
Even though it was 1/2 order, i still couldn't finish the fries that came as a side and i have to admit they made good fries - crispy and not oily!
Didn't give it five stars b/c parking could be hell and their mocha  tasted a bit watery.  :(
Overall, great exp! I would definitely visit again.

When it comes to breakfast, the neighbourhood of Kitsilano offers plenty of choices. But, of the money local places to eat the first meal of the day, I prefer Cafe Zen on Yew Street above the rest. Though the space is small, the weekend pre- and post-noon lineup moves pretty quickly, and it's definitely worth the wait.

Zen has indoor and some limited outdoor seating. The tables inside are set quite close to each other, so don't expect an intimate meal here. However, the space is cozy, and the atmosphere is friendly and warm.

Now, let's get to the most important part of any restaurant review: The food. Portions are large, and every item I've personally tried from the expansive breakfast menu (waffles, pancakes of various flavours and textures, fruit plates, yogurt, eggs, toast, fresh-squeezed OJ, and more) has been absolutely delish!

I've been to cafe zen a couple of times and I find that it's best when you avoid the rush times of 10 am and noon. I like the California eggs Benedict's ( tomato and avocado) and the Florentine:)

Like someone mentioned on their review, the sauce is missing a little something. I used d to think it was great, except when I went last time I think they added way too much vinegar to it or it was old. In any case, I haven't been back because I'm afraid. maybe it was a bad batch?

Great breakfast place. Awesome benny, with a variety of types. Quick and friendly service. Highly recommend it. Don't be daunted by the lineup, it moves quickly.

I often find myself going out of my way to for breakfast here.  There is often a line up on the weekends but the tables seem to turn over quickly and the service is quick.  I normally get the fermiere omelet.  So good!! It is a little pricey here but I'm always stuffed when I finish and the coffee keeps coming.

It used to be very good, now it's just ok.  Service is not bad but not consistant.  The quality of the food dropped for the past couple of months.   My omelette was kind of brownish...  Inconsistency kills, but i hope it's not dying.  I'll give it a 3 star because it's still struggeling to give a good shot for the money you pay....

This place is standard breakfast. Nothing fancy. The fruit and taters are better than some of the competition, but the bacon is just OK. The potatoes are little cubes, they are closer to french fries than anything else. So that's cool I guess, french fries for breakfast.

Probably the best place in Vancouver for breakfast.  I used to love Melriches in Yaletown because it was simple with good coffee, but that's gone the way of Stringer Bell (without the gunfire).  Since then, Cafe Zen is the reigning champ.  Don't be fooled by the eggs benis (the creaminess will make the meal rip through you like an Olympic bobsled team), get the spinach feta omelette, it's the real star of the show.

Brilliant Vancouver Bennys, service sometimes is lacking unless you have the blonde waitress with black rimmed glasses. Then it's great!

Fried, steamed. poached or scrambled, the breakfasts here are great.  It's just very simple, crammed and casual and nothing to fuss about. It's a busy little mom and pop diner, filled with chill, hung-over students and Kitsilano types needing to coat their stomachs with grease and gooey Hollandaise sauce.  The vegetarian options are actually well proportioned so lots of tofu and vegi scrambles are available. Coffee is only served the traditional drip way and it's endless so you can linger for hours and get refills.  I like the half option-option as well. Order half the size.  Yey, breakfast!  Get there early as the line-ups are out the door and they don't take reservations.

I loved that they have half and combo orders on their benedicts. The orange juice was pretty good too. They prepared our order really fast and we were lucky to be seated 5 minutes after we arrive. when we were leaving it was a line up. Very nice experience.
