What is up with brunch in this city? It's 3pm and they're still serving breakfast everywhere.

Anyways, we stumbled across this place while exploring Le Plateau. Love the neighborhood (Chicagoans take note, it's like Wicker Park circa 2007). We opted to sit by the window, but most patrons were on their sidewalk patio. The neighborhood feels vibrant for a Sat afternoon, and I enjoyed people watching.

As for the food, this place knows how to make eggs! The classic eggs benedict with ham was perfectly runny. Equally runny and delicious were the sunny side up eggs on my L'assiette déjeunets (bacon is also prepared nicely, several strips as well).

Inexpensive, large portions, and prime location.

    NEVER AGAIN !
The food is average (nothing aweful but we were expecting better on Le Plateau !).The service however is terrible : the main course came before we had finished the starter, the meal came with fries whereas we had ordered salad, it took them about 20 minutes to give us the mustard we asked for (and of course it arrived when we were nearly finished), the waiter short-changed us (10$ !) and when we rang the manager to let him know, we were told that there was noone available and the guy on the phone hung up on us. A really crappy place we will never go back to.

I'm really not a fan of El Dorado. I don't like the service, the ambience, or the food! I feel that the only reason this place stays open is because L'avenue across the street always has a line up.

(Please imagine I am reading this to you aloud, in a bougie voice, like I pretend to appreciate NPR lest my other friends think me a fool, and buy the New York Times every Sunday only to let it go unread because the new china cups section in the Design Within Reach Spring Catalog is more enticing.)

    Ahem.

To be perfectly honest, I always feel like brunch is a bit, well... pedestrian.  It's the kind of meal fancied by people who refer to themselves as foodies, and yet routinely watch the Antithesis Matron Of Food: Rachel Ray.

So it's a bit hard for me to get excited about what is essentially the meal in which a restaurant will surreptitiously unload all of its leftovers from the previous Friday an Saturday night. Would that the encasement of eggs around wilted spinach make for a more delectable dish!

Perhaps this is okay for the less discerning palate who is also no doubt soused with mimosas, bloody marys and the like in a boorish effort to be seen as cultural and European. Still, when one lives in the oh-so-trendy Plateau, one must occasionally lower their standards for the likes of their more pedestrian friends.

Avenue Mont-Royal Est may be known to all those living in Montréal as  that delightful shopping area in the Plateau. But I know it by its true name: Brunch Street.  For you see, there are more places to have brunch within a three block radius of Brunch Street than say, the number of Strabucks in Middle America.

And while Cafe El Dorado isn't a standout on this particular street, it is certainly well above the embarrassment level. The service is good to adequate, the portion size fair and the decor, is pleasing to the eye.

If I skimp on describing the food, it is because one would surely be amiss if they didn't leave with a 500 kilogram bag of Cafe El Dorado's fine whole bean coffee. This, dear reader is where El Dorado shines.

to recap: okay but not amazing brunch. good service. and really good whole bean coffee.

Well, the plan was to have our getaway day lunch at L'Avenue, but as seems usual with that place, the line was out the door, and we just didn't have time to wait.  So, we ventured directly across the street to this friendly looking bistro with a nice streetside patio area, and were pleasantly suprised at the food, portions, and service.  Actually, those portions were quite huge, which made the prices quite reasonable.  Plus, Boreale draft pints were on special for $5, which is just stellar.  Hey, is it me, or does everyone in Montreal seem to like to have a beer or wine (or two) with lunch?  It's sort of like Europe, and I am totally down with that.  Anyway, this is a safe bet sort of place.

Went to cafe el dorado simply because we didn't have the 45 minutes to wait in line at l'avenue (which is a delicious breakfast place right across the street). The prices here were more expensive and the food was ill-prepared. Their china and cutlery reminded me of that time I ate in this diner in the middle of nowhere built in the seventies that hadn't been redecorated or cleaned since then. I ordered a dish which they served with stale potatoes that Tasted a day old and fruit that was much older than that. They tried cutting the rotten parts of the fruit off but left a little behind. They then placed the fruit nice side up, leaving the rotten bits face down hoping I wouldn't notice. DISGUSTING STAY AWAY. and as for speaking English, they are extremely rude here. Not tourist friendly, service is in French only. last I checked Canada is bilingual
