Review from Jennifer C.
Vancouver, BC
While in town for the GCBW, looked up a number of good breakfast places near our hotel, and out of three of the most-recommended, I found that Cabin 12 was my favourite. Perhaps it was the incredible service, or the hashbrowns that were deliciously crispy on the outside and smooshy on the inside (the best kind, in my humble opinion, next to the shredded ones) or the fun decor, which is reminiscent of an elementary school room, complete with old-school wooden assembly chairs, a wall-sized blackboard in the back and low bookcases full of novels, games and things like Far Side collections. At any rate, it was a memorable breakfast, and provided the perfect base for the beer to come.
Service wise, I would have to say it was practically perfect. I love laid back but attentive service. We were never in danger of running out of coffee, and my one question about the Beaker (mystery breakfast sandwich) was answered in a cheerfully coy but accommodating manner. I'll also mention that they played some very cool music, at non-ear-splitting levels.
We had the Jack Knox and the Beaker. I requested meat in my Beaker (I'm not THAT adventurous), which led to scrambled eggs with onions, bacon and sausage, topped with mayo, tomatoes and red onions in a hotdog bun. It was delicious, and a nice compliment to the Jack Knox, which was a perfectly proportioned egg, cheese and sausage breakfast wrap-type thing.
To be fair, we went at around 10:30 on a Friday morning, so they did not have very many other patrons to deal with. However, I would return, and would order anything off that menu again. -

I agree with one of the reviewers here...it would have been a 2-star review had it not been for the fresh and fabulously attentive service to our coffee mugs. Loved our hot blonde server with her perfect beachy locks and coffee's pretty decent too. However, I found the food lacking. Put it this way, it's nothing that I can't make better myself at home.
Note to self: try their bennies next time. That's the benchmark for determining whether it's a great or so-so breakfast place. Silly me for getting the Jack Knox. -

So I finally checked out Cabin 12 for breakfast. This would have ended in a 2 star review, but unlimited coffee automatically bumps it up to three stars.
When I go out for food, I care about either one of two things:
Is it cheap?
OR
Is it better than I could make at home?
Cabin 12 is, sadly, neither of these things. My benny was just OK: the eggs were perfect, but the hollandaise wasn't that great, the peppers should have been cut smaller instead of long strips, though the addition of guacamole to it was a nice treat. The hash browns were bland and I got lots of tiny, overcooked bits. That said, what they lack in food, they make up for in fabulous service. Friendly and attentive without being smothering, and my food came out quickly.
I'll be back again to see if maybe my visit was an off day for the kitchen staff, and I'm intrigued by this vegan poutine they had on the menu, though it won't be any time soon. -
Review from Rodney F.
Rodney: This place was cool. Every other place in Canada was busy, and we couldn't get any brunch. So we came to this place, and it was cheap and delicious. I ordered this plate, but it came w/ a whole loaf of toast! Swear! It was fine though, everything else was delicious. One of the workers there pointed us in the direction of a few record shops and had a cool Integrity patch on the front of his hat. He said this one record shop wasn't open on sundays, so we didn't go out there, and he said it would be open on monday, so we went there monday, and the place was closed monday, but opened sunday, bummer. Anyway, cool place, way delicious and cheap, and that dude was nice.
Fiona: When we first got there I was hungover and stuff, so I had a sprite with me and they were really strict about how I couldn't drink outside beverages inside :( But I guess that's okay, and understandable. So I ordered some like, scrambled egg bowl thing that had a ridiculous name that had to do with a celebrity, like most other things there. I think Rodney's breakfast was called the Big Boy's Breakfast... (!!). Anyway, it was good, it was nice, kind of crowded but way less crowded than most other places, and it was pretty comfortable there. Was a sticker in the bathroom that a had an Ugg Boot on it and said like, be yourself. They had mixed morning type drinks, like things with baileys in some coffee, but they looked expensive and I still just wanted some sprite. -

Went with a Groupon. A good plan for them as I'll definitely go back.
Great service and very good food.
Definitely casual. Definitely comfortable. :) -

It took me a long time to get here, but it was worth the wait. I've been hearing about Cabin 12 for ages, and kept thinking "I gotta try that...." but let's face it - in a city with a brunch culture as ridiculous as Victoria's, there's a lot of choice, and I always seemed to end up at one of my usuals (The Reef, Ferris' Upstairs, Lady Marmalade, the Blue Fox, John's Place, Mo:Le, the Sunshine Cafe etc.).
But I finally made it in on the weekend, and I was very pleased. This place is not fancy. It's chill, and laidback, good, honest food. The prices reflect that. If it were as expensive as some of the other places, I'm not sure I'd feel as favourably, but you get what you pay for here. The servers and the owner were all really attentive, friendly and seemed happy to see us. The decor is fantastic - you could walk around for an hour in there and not see everything.
Again, it's very basic - hard wooden chairs, plastic drinking glasses, a motley assortment of coffee mugs (mine had dalmatians and hearts. Aw. Take THAT, Cruella DeVille).
The coffee was good and topped up frequently, the water was cold and topped up frequently too. I had the basic breakfast, called Eggs, Meat, Toast, because if a place screws that up, we're sunk. My order was all correct, for starters - ham, multigrain, poached. Now for the real test - I ordered my eggs poached medium, which so often results in either runny-including-the-white or golf-ball-hard. But my yolks were buttery and a bit runny, and my whites were fully cooked firm. Love it.
The potatoes, while suspiciously uniform in size and shape, were fantastic. In fact my boyfriend finished his French toast fast (he liked it a lot and is a speedy eater) and was midway through my potatoes before I barked at him to leave me some. I'm glad I did. Yum.
This strikes me as an earnest, goodhearted restaurant doing things the right way. I hope to see people support it, particularly as it has no line-ups. The Blue Fox is really good, yeah, but lining up for an hour for breakfast? Madness, people.
Again, Cabin 12 isn't fancy. You probably won't find any sun-dried tomato coulis drizzled artfully around the edge of your plate. The food is good and filing and that's about it. If the prices stay reasonable and the staff stay that friendly, I'll be a regular.
Come in. Have hot coffee and good friends in a friendly place. Laugh with your friends. Enjoy. -

GREAT breakfast! We even played some Van Halen vinyl while enjoying it. This place is a little quirky but rely fun. The food is seriously yummy. It's a must-visit when in Victoria, BC.

Willie's Hash is pretty awesome - lots of egg, lots of sausage and bacon and some very, very good hashbrowns. Ultimately, I think I prefer the rosemary roasted hashbrowns of Shine Cafe but these hashbrowns are great for a hash. The coffee is pretty good too.
That said, the bill took forever and attempts to flag someone down made us wonder if we forgot to take off our cloak of invisibility. -

Just went back to Cabin 12 for a second breakfast. Took the entire family this time. Was just as awesome as the last time I was here over a year ago (because I live in L.A.). Still can't beat the coffee and eggs benny!

Went down to Cabin 12 for a face-to-face with CK Golf Solutions, couple of golf industry contacts whom I'd never met. Cabin 12 had been recommended to me via Twitter, and I was interested to see what the fuss was about. To be honest, when I walked in the door, I was a little bit worried. The place has a funky vibe that I wasn't prepared for, a little bit eclectic, and totally at home in Victoria. Given that this would be my first impression with the people I was meeting, I felt like I should have picked a more traditional location.
My fears were for nothing. From the food to the service, Cabin 12 wowed me and wowed my new friends. The eggs benny will change your life, totally fresh and delicious. I'll definitely be back, and I'll be bringing any of my meetings there if I can get away with it. Come to think of it.. are they hiring? -

While I always like to take out-of-town guests to the Blue Fox for Brunch, the size of our party (5) would have turned into much too long of a wait during peak brunch hours. Instead, I remembered the existence of this place, which opened a few months ago and intrigued me with its humorous and unique menu (specifically, vegan poutine). So we went here, where there was plenty of room to sit.
My Irish friend, always a bad influence, encouraged us to order a pitcher of Cabin 12's "breakfast beer," specially brewed by the Phillips Brewing Company. The beer tasted very similar to the ubiquitous (but only in Victoria) Blue Buck, but much smoother. I also suspect that the alcohol content is in the 3-4% range.
Foodwise, I ordered an Eggs Benedict with feta cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, and spinach. While tasty, I found the Hollandaise to be over-salted. And while the waiter very kindly asked me how I liked my eggs poached, they served them with hard yolks instead of the medium yolks I requested.
I also tasted the Vegan Poutine, which made way too much use of gravy and had a flavor heavy on the Miso. With a thicker, less soupy gravy and crispier fries, this would be delicious, but I think they still need to work on the execution of this dish.
One dining companion loved her breakfast burrito.
This place has lots of potential. They have art for sale on the wall, lots of seating room, a stage for open mic nights, funky, multi-colored decor, and a young, friendly waitstaff.
As this place doesn't have quite the buzz of some of the other places in town, it'll be worth another try, especially if the other breakfast joints have much too long of a wait. -

BEST HASH BROWNS ever! Very crispy on the outside, enough potato-y goodness and a generous sprinkling of seasoning. If I could, I would eat these hash browns everyday.
My dining companion ordered the benny with steak, but found it not that great. One of the poached eggs was over cooked and the hollandaise sauce tasted sour.
I ordered the Willie's Hash which is a mix of hash browns, cheese, egg, sausage, and bacon - similar to the hash at Floyd's. It surprisingly, wasn't too greasy, probably because there wasn't a lot of cheese in it. The meat could have been cooked a little bit longer and the eggs a little less. Otherwise it was pretty tasty.
If I were to go back, I think I'd just stick to the more traditional breakfast items - and of course those amazing hash browns =) yum! We went on a Sunday morning around 930 and there was no line. They definitely don't have the crazy lines at the other breakfast places and have decent food. I'll definitely go back for lunch sometime. -

My husband & I just had breakfast there. We both really enjoyed our meals (me: Eggs Benedict Shambala - grilled tomatoes, spinach & feta, Him: Breakfast Clubhouse), coffee was great, service excellent, On a very hot day, really appreciated getting ice cold water immediately without asking before the coffee arrived soon after. The books, games, art and some of the furniture encourage you to stay as long as you like.
Will definitely go back. -

Reading a book on my iPad was slightly out of place in a restaurant that played tunes off a turntable and had a phone straight of the 70's. The Benny was amazing and the staff were friendly and a kind of cool that made me almost want to become a hipster ( I hate the term, but I don't know any other descriptors)

I stumbled into Cabin 12 by chance and was impressed by what I found. The food was typical breakfast fare; decent and tasty but nothing unusual. The decor was similar to that of your average coffee shop - trendy yet homey. Prices were about the same as other breakfast eateries in Victoria: $8 to $10 for a meal, plus a couple of bucks for coffee.
What struck me the most about Cabin 12 was that the wait staff were extremely outgoing and attentive. They made the place stand out in my mind. I will definitely return to Cabin 12.
UPDATE Mar 2011. Food is still good, and the service is still excellent. Unfortunately inflation seems to have hit this restaurant pretty hard; most items seem to have gone up a good 15% since a year ago - but I can still recommend them. -

Great food, wonderful atmosphere, and friendly staff make Cabin 12 a delight. While primarily a breakfast place they are occasionally open in the evenings for special events. Including an Open Mic every friday night in the summer.

Fast service and friendly staff. Decor is really interesting and the music is great. The food was good, not spectacular, but in comparison to other close cafes, a good choice for good food without spending two hours over breakfast

Funky. A step back into the past, very relaxed.
We ended up here after finding out that John's Place would be an hour wait.
I like to rate a breakfast on how well they can cook an egg and how good the potatoes are, Cabin 12 knows how to cook an egg. Feel good about ordering your eggs any style here, they will get it right and you won't have to send it back. The potatoes are tasty, cooked right and seasoned. Everyone ate all of them. Clean plates all around.
The fruit was fresh and beautifully arranged in a simple bowl. The toast was tasty and bacon a good texture.
Best of all, the room was cheery and we didn't have to wait. The service was pleasant and our water glasses were always filled. The coffee was never low.
We would go here rather than wait an hour for John's or even the Blue Fox. The food and service at Cabin 12 is better. -

The Cabin 12 is a unique place. They have a great service, nice atmosphere and make you feel welcome. The food is good, I had omelet and great strong but smooth cup of coffee. I went on my own, and while I waited for my food one of the people came and offer me two books to read mean while. I thought that was very thoughtful and sweet.
