Review from Erin P.
I'm definitely a fan of Buy the Book.
I started frequenting BtB years ago when I was a starving student. I have always loved to read, but being on a limited budget BtB fit the bill.
Not a fancy store. No frills. No muss, no fuss. I've never walked out empty ended. I particularly like that they're not an overwhelming store like a like of used book stores are. I don't like shops that are to cramped and crowded, the shelves unorganized, and find myself tripping over piles of books on the floor. That doesn't happen here.
Yes, they are in an odd location. But in my opinion, they're worth finding. -

Not the largest used book store in the city, and not the greatest selection (compared to some of your other choices), but a decent little shop just the same. I can't say that I've ever walked away empty handed or dissatisfied with my experience. They have a small classics section, which can be great for students (especially an English major like I was before I became a working stiff). There is also a selection of children's books, as well as a large stock of contemporary fiction and non fiction.
For the size, and slightly out of the way location of the place, I'm actually surprised I find as many deals, on such a consistent basis, as I do, so they must be doing something right! -

Buy the Book is a nice little second hand book store neatly tucked away off the Bedford Highway. There's a great selection of Literature, History book and Biographies. I hate buying books off a big chain like Chapters and Buy the Book has never failed me. They always seem to have exactly what I want when I go in (I found 4 Howard Hughes biographies when I decided I NEEDED to read up on him) for a good price.
I can understand people's distaste for their book scheme but it's never been a problem for me. I do dislike the fact that he doesn't take trade ins on hardcovers but really that's just me being fussy and having waaaay too many Roseanne Barr biographies for some reason. -

Buy The Book and More is a pretty standard used book buyer/re-seller. The shelves are well stocked; for the size of the store they carry a decent inventory. Of particular note is the magazine stand; late-issue magazines are offered on steep discounts.
The reason Buy The Book and More doesn't get a healthier rating from me is directly influenced by their purchase/credit policies. Buy The Book will give you store credit for all the books you bring in. However, when you want to purchase from BTBaM you can only pay for up to half of the price with your store credit. If you're like me and recycle almost every book you read, that means you'll end up accumulating store credit you'll never end up using. I much prefer the policies at United Bookstore, however if you are in need of a book reseller and don't want to head downtown, BTBaM will fill your need handily.
(PS: Don't ask about what's in that back alcove behind the door. If you have to ask, you probably aren't old enough.)
