Never had I thought that a little 1-year old girl's birthday party would lead me to a BBQ/Meat shop, but it did. How? Her parents had ordered an entire whole roasted pig as a part of her birthday feast! Made just like the Hong Kong-style roasted pork, there it was, an entire roasted pig with the crispiest skin and the tenderest meat (especially the belly part of the pig = the best part). The meat is fresh and tasty -- so much so that despite the fact that I was already full from eating lunch prior to the party, I could not stop reaching out for one more piece.
Located in Richmond Centre, just across from Purdy's, McDonald's and Carlton Cards, Butcher's Best is opened by Fillipinos who can speak Cantonese, Mandarin and English. Obviously, they sell the regular Hong Kong-style BBQ meats: Roast pork, BBQ pork (char siu), soya chicken...etc. They also serve up the rice boxes with the meats on top, and offer a prepared food section (Chinese food).
For the roast pork, they always sell the belly part of the pig -- alternating layers of fat and meat equally distributed in one chunk so that you won't feel like you are being ripped off in buying a chunk of fat instead of the tasty meat, but not too lean so that you are left still chewing on that chunk an hour later. As for the BBQ pork (char siu), even though they do not ask you explicitly, you can choose what type you want (you can do this at all of these BBQ meat stores): All-lean, half-fatty-half-lean, or mostly fatty. If you love tender meat like me, go for the half-fatty-half-lean. As for picking the actual meat for you, well that's up to the expertise of the butcher; some are good, and some are not so good. But at Butcher's Best, this butcher knows his stuff.
Maybe because it is located in Richmond Centre, the last place anyone would think to go buy BBQ meats, there's no huge line ups. They also have a few tables in their store set up for people to sit and eat if they want. to just grab lunch there. If you like Hong Kong style BBQ meats, this place is a must-try. -

As I do work besdie the mall, I use to frequent this meat shop for lunch. They had a meat and veggie combo on rice for $5.50. That was in 2010. Fast foward to the present. Seems like they changed owner as prices have risen and workers have changed. Quality of food isn't quite the same. I found my last order of soy chicken to lack flavour, very small portion and the worst part of it was they had no veggies ready to put in my order. It was 11:30am. They had asked me to wait for the veggies for 10 mins and wouldn't subsitute for anything else. Left me with a "take it or leave it" type of attitude. Co-workers have told me they put out the food around 8:30am and let it sit, which I find unappealing. Definately would not recommend coming here unless you're desperate as they have other places near by. Even Pricesmart carries similar food for better value.
