I walk over this bridge twice a day on my ways to and from work. I've been doing that almost every Monday - Friday (and often on the weekends to get downtown) for over three years. I will NEVER tire of the scenery!

I used to find it a bit stressful as the sidewalks were shared with bicycles. I saw enough people get taken out by either bikes or pedestrians and falling into the oncoming traffic would have been a brutal consequence. THANKFULLY THAT'S NOT A CONCERN ANYMORE!!!!!!! Yes, ALL CAPS and plenty of exclamation marks helps to express my joy for the bike lane that was installed in the summer of 2009. It started out as a trial and I sure as hell hope they never change their mind on this. Pedestrians have a full, wide sidewalk to themselves. Cyclists have a full sidewalk heading north and a full bike lane heading south (with a barrier between them and traffic). It is so relaxing to know that my dog and I don't have to worry about a mad cyclist knocking us down. I'm sure the cyclists love not worrying about meandering pedestrians too.

Back to the scenery....What could be better than watching the glow of the rising sun glimmering off the downtown buildings? How about seeing the mountains when they've been freshly frosted with snow? Could you tire of the ocean shimmering in the bright sun? Is there anything prettier than the sun setting on the horizon as the night-sky over Kitsilano comes alive? Even when it's pouring rain there is so much natural beauty to be viewed from this bridge.

One other very sweet note about this bridge: lovers are putting locks on the chain fence, engraved with hearts and their initials.

This is the backdrop of my life. This is how I energize in the morning and de-stress in the evening. THIS is MY Vancouver!

Burrard Bridge, you deserve an update because daily, you still take my breath away. Having the bridge in my backyard bridge, one would think that I'd be kind of "over it" already... but no, I'm not at all. It's a testament to its beauty.

    Why I love thee
    1. Sunsets. Sometimes hazy, often subdued, most times colourful. Always breathtaking.

    2. The eastward skyline at dusk or in full sunlight. Granville Island, the seawall, the reflection of sunshine off of Yaletown glass.

    3. The mountains, westward. Various shades of shadow each dipping into the other and diving into the ocean. I have never tired of this view.

    4. My favourite view: from under the bridge on the west end side. The noise of cars going overhead, boats sailing and a full view of the water.

    Blooper love reel:
    1. Brisk morning walks over the bridge (usually to collect my car abandoned the night before)

    2. Stumbling home over the bridge: in the rain, in the snow, in the wind.

    3. Ascending on the bridge either on bike or foot from the Kitsilano side. Realization: You're not actually "on" the bridge until you're almost 1/2 way over it!

Burrard Bridge is one of the major landmarks of this city.  It is a great place to watch the sunset, as well as people walking or jogging to/from Granville Island and English Bay.

You can tell it's seriously old.  Huge chunks of concrete have chipped away, exposing the underlying rebar (which is all rusted out, of course)

To be honest, I remember feeling the urge to smack some City councillors around when I heard they were going to take away a line from car traffic and use it for bikes instead.  Now that it's been in for a couple of years, I can't say I've noticed a difference in traffic patterns or increased gridlock.  With that said, the turn from Pacific (southbound) to Burrard (westbound) is now super-dangerous, as they've taken away the merging zone!  I'm not sure how you can fix this though, without removing a chunk of bike lane.

One random piece of trivia: there are approximately 210 sections of concrete fencing from one end to the other.

Wheeeee! That's the sound you hear of a girl on a bike, riding on the separated bike lane - no braking, no worrying about meandering pedestrians coming over to the wrong side of sidewalk.

So much fun, I did it both ways. I kind of prefer the elevated sidewalk you use when biking into town - the views are nicer and you can see better the inlet on one side and False Creek/Granville Island on the other.

However, if the separated lanes for cars, pedestrians and cyclists become a permanent part of our fair city, it doesn't seem fair to relegate pedestrians to only one side of the bridge. I would love to see one lane of the six split up and turned into a bike lane in each direction, and have the middle lane of the bridge alternate as a counterflow lane, similar to the Lions Gate. I'll leave all that to the traffic engineers to figure out; I'm just a reviewer with opinions. Lots of them.

I do hope the trial is allowed to continue, even though the first few days are bound to be bumpy (hopefully not literally). Traffic in this city is insane, anyway. I try not to blame it on any one thing, because there's always something. Say it with me: roadwork!

I'm on an architecture jag. If they screw up this bridge with so $60M sidewalk extension, I'll leave. The roadway bike lane will work fine, watch it appears to be working. The marine theme is wonderful.
