  For years there's been only two specialty video businesses in Calgary: the first being Casablanca video (With two locations and 20 years experiance) and the freshly opened Bird Dog with only 5 years under it's belt but a loyal patronage. Just this last year however a new front opened, one that's a little more specialty then the norm.
  
  Burning Moon Video specializes itself in three idolized genres: Horror, Cult and Sci- Fi. As any fan of this set will tell you, the excitement is in the hunt; and when you finally find a copy of that hard to find tittle, sitting untouched for months, the feeling of exhileration and triumph that washes over you is indescribable. Burning Moon is obviously run by this sort.   Stepping in you see the walls are lined with posters and post cards of rare classics and the sound of psychobilly fills you're ears (CD's of which are also on sale). To the right is a rare find in the modern video store, a rack of video nasty VHS's, long out of print.  The DVD's range pretty much within the genres; from euro trash to modern asian splatter fests it's a horror lovers dream, and the Sci- Fi and quirky Cult films are not without their representatives. Coupled with the Psychobilly and Punk memorabilia and CD's on sale, the staff show they know their market; and their always up for a bit of shop talk and a few recommendations. Don't expect to find Au Revoir Les Enfants here and those customers looking for something a little more subtle may have trouble; but the selection, albeit small, hits the mark they're aiming for.
  
    Burning Moon has managed to make a small name for itself in Calgary in the year it's been open. The first reason is it's selection of, not only rentals, but hard to find dvd's for sale. this is good news for any collector, or enthusiast who can't get their fill off a single viewing. The second reason for their notoriety, is their monthly 35mm showings of old horror movies at The Plaza. I attended their Oct. 8 screening of The Beyond and had a blast gabbing with the owners and other fans about the genre. Check their web site for up- coming shows.
  
  Burning Moon is a small outfit, and with any luck it'll be around for a while. Not that we need a saturated market of small video outlets in Calgary, but I think we have room for just one genre specific shop in the city. With Net Flix striking down most of the big chains, it's nice to see a little guy standing up to offer some instant gratification. Now the only problem with the store is the prices, while the rentals are what you'd expect, purchases are a little bit more; ranging from just slightly overpriced, to excessive ammounts for some of the harder to find tittles. This, however, isn't enough to be a problem for either fans of the genre or anybody willing to support a local independent shop.
  
  All in all Burning Moon offers up a healthy spoonful for any fan of Horror, Punk, Psychobilly or Cult favs; and I, for one, plan on becomming a regular at their monthly screenings. So if you're looking for a new jaunt to hit for some cheap thrills this Halloween stop in and see what the guys recommend. Now if you'll excuse me I have a new eye melting copy of The Stuff, that's just begging to be popped into my disk tray. Arrivederci.
