The library is usually packed when I am here, which can be frustrating when you are trying to find a study spot with an outlet for your laptop (just give up now, you won't find an open space!)

Everyone is helpful when finding books, reference material, etc. (this comes in handy since I am very short!)

I give it an extra star because the BPL website is great now!  I can receive e-mail reminders when my books are due, I can save books I want to read into different "online shelves" (in progress, read later, etc.), I can renew my books easily, view bestsellers lists, etc.

Nice quiet place to study when people aren't talking on their phones...but don't get too cozy. Cross your legs up on the chairs, take out a little trail-mix and the security guards will treat you like a delinquent.

Since Metro is a public-transport hub, this library is usually packed with families looking for something to do, children on sugar highs and/or TOEFL students practicing their English outloud.

However, if I'm not mistaken, they do house a deep collection of news prints, some of which go back to the days of yore.

With two spacious floors and more than enough comfy chairs to read a book or newspaper in, the main branch of the burnaby public library is already a large enough place for the relatively small portion of the community that come here. Although their free internet service is always backed up, the park and mall close by can provide more than enough distraction for those 45 minutes before you do some light browsing, not to mention the vast amount of literature available that you could always... read. I find them to have a better DVD and VHS selection than the main Vancouver Public branch, especially when it comes to foreign films (which they have entire shelves dedicated to). Sometimes they stock films you would be hard pressed to in a rental store. Also, like the books this is all free and public as long as its returned on time, so you dont need to your working dollars on something that was once recomended by that someone but you dont completely recall who...

Anyways, its a relaxing and expansive place, but dont expect to find a lot of reference material here (especially compared to the VPL). As a previous reviewer said, they stock newsprint here, but they arent dedicated to it and theyre mostly on microprint.

Meet the Manager: Deb T.

I am the branch manager for the Bob Prittie Metrotown Branch and the Deputy Chief Librarian of Burnaby Public Library. I have been working in libraries for over 30 years and in library management for 21 years. I was previously Branch Manager of the Kingsway Branch and previous to that, Chief Librarian of the Nelson Municipal Library for 18 years. I believe strongly in the value of public libraries and in our ability to "provide access to a rich array of the world's stories, ideas and information."
