Let me tell you something about French Onion Soup..

I was a young boy when I was introduced to this tasty soup, which is an onion broth with bread clumps topped with tons of cheese and baked. I first had it at the Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club in Calgary. I was instantly hooked! After that time, I've come back many a time to this tasty soup at various places... Some people make it good, and some people don't. Today I went to Burgoo's new location on West 4th Avenue (where Presto Cucina used to be... RIP, I liked that place! (and I got a Yelp review of the day honors on my review of them!!) and I toyed with either getting the grillers (which are very good) or the French Onion Soup (which I had never tried). The soup won out! It came, and it looked AMAZING! So okay, lets go through the check list..

    1) It has to be cheesy, and thick. YES! This indeed it was, The cheese was gooey, tasty, and sticks-to-the-spoon consistency. Perfect.

    2) There has to be bread clumps: YES! Lots of yummy bread! Tasty!

    3) The broth has to be good: The broth was VERY VERY good! Though maybe a little less in quantity then what I would have liked..

    And most importantly..

    4) The cheese must have spilled over onto the outside of the bowl, making a crust. YES! I don;t know, the people at Burgoo mustve realized this is the MOST IMPORTANT DETAIL, because not only was it it running off the bowl, it was running onto the serving tray. Half the fun of FOS is picking the crust off the bowl, and they had that in mass quantity! Mmmmm mmmmmm good!

So definite thumbs up from me! A perfect bowl, in Burgoo's always warm and friendly atmosphere!

    Loved this place.

My boyfriend and I went on a hot date here because we wanted that comfort food; and it was great.

We shared the Brie Fondue to start- and I am slightly lactose intolerant (ie, can't have milk, cream, or ice cream only) so i was a bit wary of this dish- but I did enjoy it. I didn't have a reaction either, which was nice.

He had the Paella - he loves seafood at restaurants and he really enjoyed it.

I had the Burgoo B L T C G which was great. When it was delivered it had the "Bacon Moneyshot" which means it was open faced with a massive strip of bacon lying on top. I loved it.

the sandwhich was perfectly prepared and catered to all the tastes of bacon, guacamole and cheese and everything.

Overall, i would definitely be back!

    Burgooooooooo, Sogoooooooood.

    Aye, comfort food indeed.

Thus far, my tastebuds have had the pleasure of being enlightened by Burgoo's Dos Diablos (chorizo and spicy white cheddar) sammy and Sunset Corn & Chicken Soup.  Also recently celebrated National Grilled Cheese Day on April 12 Burgoo-style thanks to a friend of mine (im forever grateful!) who bought me grilled cheese and crab bisque TO GO. Yes, I got to enjoy this grilled gooey cheese and bread excellency from the comfort of my home. Really could not get any better than that.

Yes, the sandwiches are a bit greasy. Okay, like ALOT. And no, you would not have this every day if you cared about your thighs even the slightest bit. But let me assure you, this is THE ULTIMATE pick me up for whenever you want a lifting of the moods - via one's tastebuds.

Folks, for the price you pay (soup and sammy comes out to ~$20 w/tip and tax), this is a massive gourmet upgrade from your regular go-to Deli's soup and sandwich of the day. Alas, be enlightened!

Just a word on the ambiance (at least for the one here at the West 10th location) - super cozy, kinda feels like your inside a wood oven. :P The last time we were there we scored a table right by the fireplace too - I imagine it being the perfect dinner spot during the winter!!

Next on the list, FONDUE! :DDD

    I love soup.  Do you?

I love grilled cheese. Do you?

If you do, go here. You will be greatly satisfied.

Picture this.  Ooey gooey grilled cheese on crisp bread that has been generously buttered.  Hearty soup, savoury to the taste, that warms the most inner depths of your stomach. MmmmMmm....

If you're not convinced, you're possibly dead inside or lactose intolerant.  Come on! Wake up and get some digestive enzymes and probiotic and head there to have some amazing comfort food!

I love coming here for the yummy, comforting soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. But last night, we went back specifically for a dessert. First time we had it, we had the "oh my this is gooood" reaction. We were craving it, all too soon. What was it? The Hot Chocolate Chili Pot.
Ever had a piece of chocolate with chili? It has a nice kick as the chocolate melts. Well put that flavour punch into a cocotte, turn it into a hot , chocolatey, custard-y gloop of goodness and you will go to heaven and come back down for more. Oh is it a little too hot? Cool your taste buds down with some vanilla ice cream. It is quite rich so after a hearty meal, it's perfect for sharing with your sweetie, or partner in crime.
I will definitely come back for more on a cold winter night, which means +10c for Vancouver standards. ;)

You really can't go wrong with Burgoo in Point Grey. Great good, great service, and they have interesting and reasonably priced drinks! I highly recommend the grilled cheese paired with carrot soup. Also, pitchers of Pimm's Cup. Huge win.

I love this place. Upscale comfort food done right. Normally I'd be opposed to dropping $20 on a soup and sandwich, but when the food is this good, I don't mind. The Banh Mi is as good as you'll find outside of a Vietnamese restaurant, but what they really do well is soup. The Clam Chowder and Borscht are as good as I've had and they keep me coming back for more. Also, they have surprisingly affordable drink specials and fantastic service.

Definitely a 'must visit' during the monsoon season in Vancouver (traditionally between September and June).

I could probably come here at least once a week during the winter time.  I came last week with some work colleagues on a cold cold Vancouver day and warmed up with some very  yummy comfort food at Burgoo.

YUM YUM YUM!  I usually order the soup and sandwich combo (which are all great), but this last visit, I decided to try something different and had the Jambalaya.  It was a very tasty dish.  i loved that my bowl came out piping hot on such a cold day.  Probably the best Jambalaya I've had - they use very good ingredients and made a very nice broth.

Portion sizes are very very generous as well, so be prepared to slip into a food coma.

Looking forward to trying some more of their stews/bowls!  The beef bourginon and irish stew are next on my list :)

Was told about this restaurant and its delicious baked mac' and cheese. Had this during my first visit and it turned out to be REALLY good.

Second time contemplated between the soup/sandwich deal and the jambalaya. Went with the the jambalaya and was happy I did. Just the right amount of spice for me and was delighted with the flavor and the amount of prawns, chicken and andouille sausage within the dish. Really good.

My girlfriend had the soup and sandwich deal, I tried both and it reaffirmed my decision to go with the jambalaya. Great, friendly service and atmosphere.

Instafan! First visit with the wife, kid and friend for lunch. The place was packed (good sign) and we sat at the bar. Service was good, vibe was good and food rocked.

I had the Ban Mi and Butternut Soup with some strawberry lemonade. The vietnamese sandwhich was great but the soup was meh (average).

BUT the wife had the grilled cheese. GOOD LORD. It was so frickin good, seriously they took all the best cheeses and mixed them together, threw it on some great bread and fried it in butter. Seriously, how can't that be good??? Granted, the wife was sick for the rest of the day, but man o' man did it taste good.

Friend had the brie fondue. Again, how can't that be good?

Great comfortable place for great comfortable food. Highly recommend.

I sink into a delicious food coma just thinking about this place.

    3... 2... 1.... Ok, I'm back...

I come in cold and hungry, and come out feeling burpy and just wanting to slither into my couch whilst cocooned within a fleece throw. Now, that's comfort food!

Burgoo has a soup and sandwich combo ($15) that I highly recommend. Their soups are very hearty. By far the best I've had in the city. I haven't tried them all (though that should be my goal), but my favourites thus far are the Curried Red Lentil and French Onion. I take my time with these soups, so that I can drag out the enjoyment for as long as possible. [insert mmmmmmmmmmmmm here]. The sandwiches are great too. The Gooey Cheese Griller is a huge favourite with the boyfriend. I remember the Dos Diablos being good too. They are very greasy. But whatever, this is not a place to be watching the fat and calories!

I've also been to their Main St. location, but didn't enjoy my meal there nearly as much. So there must be something magical about the Point Grey location. Now that the wonderful Vancouver winter is upon us, I should be planning my next trip here!

It was my first time visiting this Burgoo Bistro location and, frankly, I know my experience could have been better. My company and I arrived in the afternoon for a late lunch. Seating in the restaurant was easy to find since we missed the peak hour and the floor staff were courteous and very helpful in assisting us with menu ideas.

Our waitress was also very friendly and kept checking back on us to see if we needed anymore water or if we had any problems with our order.

We started off with the Brie Fondue. If you're a cheese lover, this is a must-have. The consistency of the brie was perfectly melted and spiced. Paired with apple and bread for dipping, I can assure you that you won't be able to put your fork down.

My main was a soup and sandwich combo. I went with the Tastier Chicken sandwich and the Yummy Carrot soup. It wasn't the first time I had either of them before but this is where my 'negative' experience here comes in. The chicken was rather dry - unfortunate because everything else in the sandwich (cheese, vegetables, fruit and dressing) was perfect. In addition, the soup could have been a little less watery.

Unfortunate because I know that this Burgoo Bistro location can do better and, hopefully, make light of my constructive criticism. Burgoo Bistro has a high standard and quality of food with a menu that changes seasonally and I can safely say that I will be coming back here if I'm in the area and hungering for comfort food.

    Good Service and Food.

I have been to Burgoo before and last time I ordered the Mac and Cheese and that was great.  I think I ordered the wrong thing for brunch today.  Ordered the Omelette Burgoo..it was only okay.

Still love it here, but will pass on the Omelette Burgoo and stick to the Mac and Cheese and the Sandwiches next time.

The most memorable moment I had eating here was after a snowshoeing adventure up Mt.Seymour in the rain/dark, only to find out that there was no view! That definitely called for some comfort food, and what better place than Burgoo?

After a big bowl of their Straight Up Tomato soup (seriously it is pretty much all tomato - and some red wine) and their Gooey Cheese Grillers (Mozzarella, Gruyere, Emmenthal and White Cheddar), we were back in good spirits :)

Other favs at Burgoo: Brie Fondue, Fonduemental (Gruyere & Emmenthal), Kentucky Burgoo

Eclectic menu with dishes from all over the globe (and labeled as such).  I wasn't sure I'd like it, as I feared that the kitchen may have spread itself too thin.  I was very pleasantly surprised.

I ordered the Soup and Sandwich combo, which came with a hearty bowl of soup (16 oz) and a full-sized sandwich.  I opted for the Curried Lentil Soup and the Vegiterranean sandwich.  The lentil soup was simply out-of-this-world stupendous.  It was the most delicious, perfectly spiced, creamy (without cream), and flavorful lentil soup I've ever tried.  The only lentil soup that remotely can compare is the daal at my beloved Ananda Fuara in San Francisco, and -- pardon my blasphemy -- this was better.

The vegetarian sandwich was also good, but nothing quite as unique or sublime as the lentil soup.  It came with artichoke hearts, hummus, and vegetables.  It was a nice sandwich -- nothing special, mind you, but at least in my mind, it satisfied what I would consider the minimum standards for good food:  fresh, local, well prepared/well-executed, delicious.  It was also served on a hearty multi-grain baguette, which makes a big difference.  That said, it didn't blow my mind or was it so good that I'm currently devising strategies of how and when to return to eat it.  I am and I have for the lentil soup.

My companion got the ratatouille, which he loved.  It was a bit too sweet for me, or so it seemed when I had a bite, but he loved it (and unlike me, he's not a vegetarian).

Great meal.  Very reasonable (compared to what we've spent in Canada elsewhere).  Recommended.

Mmm a snowy day in Vancouver means hot soup and stews are in order!

Got the french onion soup and my dining partner du jour (the same one that is in most of these reviews, really) had the eggs burgoo.  We split an order of scones, which he proceeded to slather with the provided cinnamon butter.  He pronounced it all delicious.

The french onion soup was very good too: chock full of onions and melted cheese.  I opted to not get the combo with salad and I was still very full afterwards.  You know you have a good soup when it's all you need for a meal!

In the past I've also tried the macaroni and cheese (very cheesy) and the irish stew (huge portion and rich).

I do agree with other reviews that some of the prices are a little on the high side for "comfort food," but on the other hand, the soups are huge so I don't mind paying $8 for a meal-sized soup.

I've been to this location a few times. I love Burgoo....on Main St. This location somehow just doesn't measure up. Service is slow to indifferent. And while the food is good, it's much much better at the Main Street location.

So go to Main Street and get the chipotle chicken corn chowder with grilled cheese (or the tomato if you're vegetarian). You won't regret it!

A colleague and I hopped down to Burgoo for some good ol' comfort food. Everything on the menu sounded mighty scrumptious, boasting recipes from around the world. My Blue Back Pale Ale hit the spot nicely out of the bottle. I had heard all sorts of thing about the eatery and finally got around to popping by myself.

We both started off with some soups. I went with the Manhattan clam chowder (left) and Alison went with a traditional tomato soup (right). I love my chowders and this was was hearty with clam, potatoes, and all the fixings. Although the bacon was delicious, it's hard texture did get a little rough and grating.

I garbled up my Dos Diablos sandwich made up of two grilled cut filone sandwiches with melted spicy white cheddar, chorizo sausage, and roasted red peppers. This was very good, moist, and a tad oily, but it went down nicely.

Alison had the Tastier Chicken sandwich with roasted chicken, melted brie, apple, cucumber, red onion
and greens. I had my eye on that but couldn't resist the lore of some grilled cheese. It did look good and judging my her response, it was.

My biggest complaint is simply for Burgoo being what it is. They proudly label themselves as comfort food and the description fits. The sandwiches were filling, fatty, thick, rich, and tasty.

Great place to bring a date because you can share the amazing Guiness cheese fondue and wipe the excess cheese off each other's faces, hehe.
If "cheesy" ain't your thing though, no need to fear the French/Belgian inspired cuisine has many options, although not many of them are vegetarian friendly.
The ambiance is really nice though, brick walls, dimly lit, soft music, like I said before, great place for a date.

Nothing beats ending a long and eventful day off with comfort food. Burgoo does exactly just that.

We got there at around 8:30pm, the main dining area was still full, so we opted for a table near the bar, right by the window.

I like this place because it has simple decor, and candlelight gives a comforting sense of home.

Their menu is great, it has favourites from all around the world. Now this could be a risky thing, since how do you make everything from all different cuisines accurate?

Starters include hummus and tepanade, salads, and fondue, with either Brie, or a mixture of Gruyere and Emmenthal, lots of different Big Cup soups-Corn & Chicken, Yummy Carrot...and the best part-Bistro Classics- Kentucky Burgoo, Mac & Cheese, Butter Chicken, Irish Stew...and lots more 'classic' dishes from around the world.

They also have a "Spring Specials" menu, and I decide to get the Laksa. Yes, I know, trying this at Burgoo might not be the best bet, but I was willing to give them a chance.  Also got a Desert Hills Gewurztraminer to accompany it. The dining partner got a mac & cheese.

The Laksa arrived in a large bowl of piping hot curry based soup. The soup was flavourful, and very delicious. Thin rice noodles were in the soup, but there was VERY little of it. I'm used to basically having lots and lots of noodles.Other ingredients include prawns, portabello mushrooms, pea shoots, and BBQ pork. Everything was fresh, and tasted great with the soup. However, for $18, this is a little pricey for what I got.

Service was minimal throughout the night; maybe it was because they were close to their closing hours?

I've been here other times and their food has been consistently good. I will be back to try out their fondue!!

Me and a friend had been planning to come here for a while but never found the time. Finally did and immediately fell in love with it. Comfort food from all over the world? Who WOULDN'T want that kind of a selection? Just a warning though: depending on how you plan your meal, you may end up eating a lot of bread.

We shared the Tapenade as a starter and it came in a mound (heaven!). It was really delicious and light. It was hard not to gobble up all the crostini. The waitress brought us some more after we finished that because we still had plenty more tapenade. The side of grapes with it was just perfect.

The service was spot-on. We didn't have to wait long (as it was a Monday) and the waitress made sure we had enough bread, water, and that our food came on time.

I had the Fonduemental as my main and that also came with a lot of bread. I kind of wished they used green apples instead of red as I thought that would've suited the fondue better. It was delicious as well, just very filling. My friend had the Gooey Cheese Grillers and MMMM that was yummayy.

We have decided we will be coming back here often as the prices are very good for college students haha

After deciding to skip the business of Mix Bakery, we decided to have brunch at Burgoo instead. After all, it was busy and the menu looked promising.
The only highlight of the meal was sadly the French onion soup topped with comforting baked cheese. The rest of the meal was average; bordering on 2 stars.
The omelet sandwich was too salty and pretty much uninteresting. The Eggs Burgoo was equally bland and uninspiring. I'd prefer it to be more moist and flavorful.
The butternut squash soup was pretty decent except for the walnut, which felt unnecessary and didn't compliment the taste of the soup itself.
Our waitress seemed to be overwhelmed too. The place seemed to be noticeably understaffed. The service was just too slow even for a lazy Sunday brunch.

Great brunch menu.  We stopped by the restaurant for brunch after running a few errands in Kits and Point Grey.  It was a warm morning but the heavy bistro menu did not stop us from having brunch there.

My pain dore (French toast with blueberry syrup) was delicious.  The syrup was sweet but light in texture - great compliment to the thin slices of crispy pan fried baguettes sprinkled with hazelnuts and sauteed banana on the side.  A perfect dish to go with my mimosa with orange juice

I do love Burgoo. This one was a little bit different then the one on Main, but the menu is the same. Of course i had to have the grilled cheese and grain salad.. all scrumptous. My boyfriend opted for the Ratatioulle which was delcious as well, but midway through he was picking out huge chunks of garlic. So much garlic that it made it hard to eat. We mentioned it to the waitress and she says she get's complaints about it daily, yet nothing has changed on the kitchen side. Anyone that knows anything about cooking would know that you do not need to leave in garlic after it's already been infused, it can be removed, and make this meal more pleasant. So hopefully the review will get to the kitchen. Service was great otherwise on a busy Sunday brunch day.

"...nobody knows what's going to happen to anybody besides the forlorn rags of growing old, I think of Burgoo Stew... I think of Burgoo Stew, I think of Burgoo Stew"

Okay, now that I have carelessly massacred Kerouac's immortal words, let's get on to the review shall we. It isn't that Jack and Burgoo go particularly well together, although they may after a few glaces of wine, but I really do think of Burgoo more often than I should.

I first sampled what they had to offer in the form of a frozen bag of stew I found in my partents' freezer one winter night when I was too lazy to cook something up from scratch. It was Irish Stew and I was hooked. Funnily enough I didn't even realize that the Stongs-purchase was actually from a local restaurant "chain" until I was wandering down 10th one day with my mother and she suggested we go in. My mom had been here many times before so she knew what was happening, I did not. The food here is more homey than home and more soul-warming than hugging your favorite teddy bear. Though it is not bottom of the barrel cheap, it is certainly not over-priced for what you get!

Now, having been back many many times I have tried most of what is on the menu and would unflinchingly recommend it all. Starters, mains, drinks, brunch items ... all of it is delectable and will drag you back for more before you can say "Burgoooooo". And that's another thing... what a great name! Its namesake is a type of stew (of course) that derives from irish stew and it always reminds me somewhat of pot-roast (note: if pot-roast is on the Burgoo menu when you go there... GET IT!)

So head on over to Burgoo if you are looking to warm the cockles of your heart, share a hearty meal with friends and family, woo your lady-love (me, please, if you are going to Burgoo) or just chow down on something comforting after a hard day at the office. And when you are there, savor the lovely name... Burgooooo, Burgoooo...

Great comfort food. I often go weekly and their food and service is consistently good to great. If you are a fan of soups, stews or fondue, you will love this restaurant. They also offer several seasonal dishes that rotate by season.

My usual favourite is a bowl of Southwest Corn and Chicken Chowder with Gooey Cheese Grillers (best grilled cheese sandwich in the city).

I've been here twice and both times I've been happy with what I have ordered. First time I went with a group of 6. We lucked out and had a sunny Saturday and since we had a heads up to go early we got there just after 5 so there was room for us on the patio.
I had the Malbec Rose' Wine which was amazing. I only ordered ceviche and enjoyed it, not much u can do with ceviche but it was good. A friend ordered the mack and cheese and loved it. Everyone was happy with their food.
The next time I went was another sunny Saturday around 2. the patio was full but there was room for 2 inside. Brunch is served until 3 Saturday and
Sunday so I ordered Eggs Burgoo.this is their definition of Burgoo
    Kentucky Burgoo, KY
slow cooked meats with lima beans, corn, tomatoes, cabbage and okra, served over garlic mash potatoes
    or Burgoo biscuits
For brunch it is served with fluffy scrambled eggs and biscuits. Burgoo is one of my new favourite meals and I will be back for it.
My friend had an open faced vegetarian sandwich with carrot soup. Both vegan and deliciously satisfying.
Our waitress both times was cheerful and helpful and always ready to fill our water glasses.
Special note for coffee lovers - the coffee here  is from Seattle (forget the name ) and delicious.

Their grilled cheese sandwich is the best I have ever had. It is fan-freaking-tastic. Great slabs of bread, delicious gooey cheese and, if you are lucky, some burnt bits of cheese that oozed out into the pan and got crisped. So good.

Sometimes on a cold, wet winter day a person just craves warm comfort food. What is more comforting than soup and a sandwich, or more specifically, a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup.
Burgoo has perfected the grilled cheese and tomato soup combo.  The soup comes in a large bowl, piping hot with a drizzle of olive oil on top. The soup has a little zip to it and an excellent flavour.
Is there such a thing as too much cheese - Burgoo and I think not.  The sandwich is actually 4 massive wedges of golden, buttery, melty, cheesey goodness. The mozzarella, gruyere, emmenthal and cheddar cover 100% of the inside of the bread as well as oozing out on to the grill so you get some of those crunchy cheese bits outside of your sandwich too!
My husband ordered the Hungarian Goulash and did not leave a molecule in the bowl and said it was delicious. He could have eaten an armadillo and I wouldn't have cared, I was in the throes of grilled cheese nirvana.
The atmosphere is warm and inviting, I prefer sitting in the room with the fireplace myself.  I'm not sure how much this place would appeal to me in July but in January it is perfection.

You know when you've had that long day at work, and then you go outside and it's cold, rainy and dreadful? And all you want is a nice hot dinner and a glass of wine to put the day behind you? This is the perfect place to go. The menu is a delight that will have something for everyone's default comfort dish. You can also order half portions on a number of entrees. I had the beef bourgignon, and went to bed happy.

I came here on my first night back in town, which fortunately for me was during Dine-Out Vancouver, and had a great meal.

The carrot soup was rich (but not too rich) and very flavourful. The ratatouille was wonderful - tasty with just the right combo of veggies and goat cheese. Both were simple but tasty comfort food, and for me (not the biggest fan of traditionally "French" food, except for the wine and cheese!) I found my main course in particular to be highly enjoyable.

I would recommend Burgoo as a great place for comfort food at great value for the money, especially for UBC students looking for home cooking!

I first tried the Burgoo Lonsdale location but because the Point Grey location is so close to UBC, I've been frequenting this one for lunch time.

They have a great soup and sandwich combo for lunchtimes for about $10. I always have the Pacific Chowder, which is a yummy mix of salmon and your usual chowder fare. I usually go for the Mediterranean veggie sandwich whose marinated artichokes are a stand out for me. I'm always satisfied after lunch at Burgoo, and the cozy interior lets me get in a few pages of a good book while snacking away.

I've been for dinner as well, when things are a bit busier. The fondue is pretty good, and I'm a fan of the couscous dish. Dinner prices are decent for delish food and great service.

Great food and great service. Awesome if you are looking for some comfort food and the prices are reasonable. The gooey cheese grillers are amazing! They don't take reservations though.
