Have been wanting to try this for a while, and I wish I did earlier!
There are lots of choices for a vegetarian. Omnivore friends say their dishes are also excellent. There is a large selection of starters with many soups and dips, and a wide variety of main dishes. I had the lentil soup which is amazing (and I have ordered lots of lentil soups). We also tried the biscuits (nice and fluffy) and hubby and I shared the mac. and cheese. This was just ok. The rest (hubby's butternut squash soup, friend's paella, shared chocolate chili dessert) were all very nice. Even the decaf coffee was tasty.
The service was quite prompt, and friendly. The atmosphere is warm and pleasant. This place is busy, even on weekdays, so expect a bit of a wait. We only had to wait about 10 min for 3 people, at 6 pm on a Tues. It's longer on the weekends. They only take reservations for 6 people or more.
Access is easy, as there's free street parking, and it's right by the Seabus terminal. Prices are reasonable.
I'm looking forward to returning to try more dishes, but probably will keep ordering that lentil soup as it was so good! -

Food is always great no complaints there.
Too dark in the evening.
Not enough serving staff, one evening our waitress had 7 tables at the same time. Always slow service. -

Dear Burgoo,
Your food is tasty, yes. But it is also 20-25% too expensive for what you're offering. I had the Irish Stew (the secret ingredient is butter, right? not that I'm complaining), and it was very good. Also, I respect the fact that you have drink specials, most places in your price range don't really do that.
Please please please do something about the fruit flies in your Lonsdale location. It was nearly impossible to enjoy my meal.
Yours truly,
Joshua N. -

Quite like Burgoo! I have been there twice now and the service is great. Both times I have ordered the dos diablos sandwich which has the potential to give an otherwise healthy person a heart attack in one meal (mmmm, = delicious). The soups are decent, and I have tried the ratattoulie as well which was very good. Everyone I've been with has been at the very least satisfied with their meal. And to top it off, the price is right!
Oh, one item on the menu I have not been impressed with is the guacamole which is just avocado and cilantro, no lime juice or salt or anything. -
Review from Berkley C.
This place was pretty good. The fondue was ok. I was expecting the cheese to be a little thicker, and the bread wasn't warm and a bit stale. My beer was ok. I was expecting more beer choices on draft. They were kinda kitchy, telling us where all the items hailed from. I got a sandwich with cheese and chorizo and it was pretty good. My husband was recommended the ratatouille with a side of garlic mashed, and it was meh. It wasn't bad but it wasn't spectacular. I'd give it another chance if I lived in the area.

Review from Kat S.
Another tasty experience at Burgoo. I decided to stray from my usual order of tomato soup and grilled cheese. So I had the delightfully flavoured Indian style lentil soup, and the Dos Diablos sandwich. We also had Burgoo Biscuits, which were, as always, scrumptious. The sandwich was a nice twist on the regular grilled cheese that they make. If i'm in a meat eating mood, I would order it again. Otherwise, the 4-cheese griller is my favourite.
Had I known their spring drinks featured bourbon, I would have come sooner! They make a darn tasty bourbon sour, and one with maple, too, for pretty fantastic prices ($8 and $6.75, respectively).
Service was rather slow at this location, hence 4-stars. The hostess didn't seem to know, or care, how to smile, but our server was very sweet and nice. I was starving, so the wait for food was a little long, but I was happy with my meal once it arrived. Thankfully we had the biscuits to help ease the hunger pains as I waited. It was a rather busy night for them, so I can understand they must have been slammed in the kitchen.
Sure, I could make that grilled cheese at home, as one reviewer has suggested. But then I would have to buy 4 kinds of cheese and bread, and then I would have lots of left overs, and would eat 5 of those sandwiches by week end. And then I would be fat. So, instead, I will get my fatty-fat-fat sandwich at Burgoo once every 6 months. Way better. And I don't have to get all greasy making it.
Also, they packed the second half of my sandwich in a paper/foil wrapper, rather than a styrofoam container. So that was good. -

You know, I had a surprisingly good experience at Burgoo. I stopped there with a friend for a quick lunch, expecting to be limited to a light salad minus the cheese and bacon, but was pleasantly surprised to learn that Burgoo makes really good food. By that, I don't mean that the food is good tasting. I mean that they use quality ingredients and don't load their food with a bunch of dairy and meat just to make it taste good.
As a vegan, I actually had choices at this decidedly omnivorous restaurant. There were two soups that were vegan-friendly, not because they were meant to be but because they were made with delicious fresh produce and other real delicious ingredients rather than crappy cream and whatever. I had the tomato soup and gosh darn it was tasty.
In addition to my soup, I had the vegetable sandwich - I can't remember the name of it, just that it was roasted vegetables on delicious bread. I think it comes with cheese default on the menu but I had that omitted and it was still a really tasty sandwich. Again, full of flavour not because of extra filler ingredients but because of the quality of the vegetables and the chef behind them.
I really, really appreciate when I go to a restaurant that's not designed to be vegan-friendly, but the chef is thoughtful and skilled enough to craft dishes that are minimalistic yet still full of flavour. A+, Burgoo. I'd give you one more star if you were to actually consider vegans when crafting your menu. -

Have wanted to try this place for quite sometime, I was not aware that they even had a location in N Van, so I was pleasantly surprised when we decided to catch the sea bus over on a sunny Sunday afternoon and boom there it was!
We immediately ordered the fondue which was AMAZING! While we were enjoying it we were trying to decide on what else to order, this took a good 20 - 30 minutes. Everything looked amazing. Since it was a late lunch, we each decided to get a soup and salad. I had the carrot soup with the greens & grains salad, the bf had crab bisque and Caesar salad. The soups were absolutely perfect, salads were decent, nothing spectacular.
The restaurant was super cute and our waitress was fantastic. Only complaint is that we weren't hungrier, I seriously would have tried everything on the menu. -

After a long day at Grouse or Seymour, this is a perfect spot to warm up from the snow! Came here with a friend after snowshoeing and it did not disappoint - perfect comfort food for winter! The decor is warm and inviting and the service was perfect.
The menu has a great selection of soups, salads, sandwiches and comfort food mains. I went with their salad with goat cheese and pecans - tasty with good texture, but a bit heavy on the dressing. I'd ask for it on the side next time. Sampled some of my friend's chicken and corn soup and it was awesome! My mac 'n cheese was rich and creamy without being too greasy. Prices are reasonable with salads and soups between $5-8 and sandwiches/mains being around $10-15.
I'd definitely come back when I'm in the area! -

Great food. The grilled cheese is to die for, so is the lentil soup, and the eggs ratatouille. The chefs are awesome, and so are the servers, wait staff and everyone else. A must visit if you're in the area!

Forget all the other scrumptious food, they recently introduced a new sandwich that sent me to another world.
Dos Diablos:spicy chorizo, cheese, chipotle mayo, and caribean hot sauce on the side. My tastebuds are twinging just typing about it. -

I was craving some mac and cheese one night so I decided to hit up Burgoo to satisfy my craving.
I started dinner off with the crab bisque. The soup was not the most spectacular, but there is no doubt you can taste quality ingredients being used. I had a noticeable amount of crab meat which was a bit of a surprise to me. All in all, it was a good soup that was well seasoned and satisfying.
For the main course, I had the mac and cheese, of course. It was baked with loads of cheese, and like the soup, you can tell that quality ingredients were used. I definitely satisfied my craving for the mac and cheese. The portion was a bit smaller than I'd like but so was the price, so it was forgivable.
I also had a taste of the Dos Diablos sandwich and a spoon of the Corn soup. The corn soup was very tasty and seasoned very well, even better than the crab bisque. The sandwich was also very good. It was made from two pieces of angle cut filone which was a little greasy but very crispy. For me, the bread was the star of the sandwich and theres no shame in that.
Overall, my visit to Burgoo was very positive. Their name says it all, Burgoo "food for comfort". Although the menu items aren't the most intriguing and risky, with use of quality ingredients, they do aim to satisfy. It felt like eating a home cooked meal which was a good change for me. -

I've been dying to try Burgoo up from my place on Main but haven't had a chance yet. So while in North Van waiting to drop a friend at the Ferry I suggested we give it a try.
The place wasn't busy when we dropped in so we were able to get a table right by the window. Great atmosphere and setup.
I ordered the "Vegiterranean" Sandwich with a Caesar, with my guest ordering the suggested "Banh Mi Xa Xiu" sandwich. I have to say I was shocked at how fast it came out. I definitely wasn't let down by the hype it gets in my side of town.
Great place to stop for a quick bite to eat if you're in a hurry and if you want to just kick back the place has a welcoming feel, a great bar and a great location. -

Burgoo seems pretty much incapable of serving a bad meal. I've now had the pleasure of sampling several items off their menu and it's all been delicious, filling and satisfying. Let me count the ways: butter chicken, tagine, Kentucky burgoo (which is fun to pronounce in a Southern accent: baa-goo-ah), Pacific chowder, beef bourgignon, and of course, the parsley cheese biscuits - a must.
I was proud recently to share their comfort food goodness with friends for a Friday night dinner at the North Van location. Like the Main Street Burgoo, it's a cozy atmosphere with big solid wood tables lit with candles and low-lighting and has a streetside patio.
We ordered from the summer set menu, which allows you to choose a starter (soup or salad) and main for $18. They're slightly smaller portions, but still excellent value, as the regular-size mains run about $14-18. Strawberry lemonade was refreshing to start with, and the wine I ordered with my meal, a shiraz, was perfection. Mmm mmm mmm.
And if all that wasn't enough, there was still room for dessert, so we ordered the chocolate banana bread pudding. Our friends got the sticky toffee pudding. IMHO the choco-banana was much better; the sticky toffee was just a little too sticky-sweet.
Burgoo serves my kind of food, comfort food, and they've proven that you can enjoy it any time of year.Listed in: North Shore Eats, Lower Lonsdale, Date Night

Yep, Burgoo is goooood. Whether you're hitting it up for brunch, lunch or dinner there's something that will most definitely satisfy you (especially if you're heading there on a cozy, cool fall day).
Personal favourites are the mac & cheese for lunch or dinner or the muesli for brunch. I've also been highly impressed by their fondue, Irish stew and tomato soup (and that's just off the top of my head). Oh, and I can't forget the grilled cheese sandwich, though the one time I ordered it I found it to be too greasy (was a good complement to the tomato soup though).
The restaurant is quite cozy feeling with large dark wood tables and comfortable, understated leather chairs. The service I've received has always been quite excellent and the servers can be counted on to recommend something if you just can't decide.
And hey, have you ever tried mead? Burgoo has this honey wine on their menu (first time I've seen that) and they offer it heated or cooled. Either way, super delicious and BC made! -

Even though it was a rainy day so comfort food was appropriate I had to pick out an awful lot of bread from my French onion soup. My salad was fine, nothing special. The server was pleasant but a little slow. My husband liked his dish and he's been there before so I'd be willing to give it another go.

We got the Groupon for Burgoo so we decided to give the North Van location a try. It was our first time to any of the Burgoo locations.
Service: Disappointing at first. We got there at 8pm and they informed us there will be a half hour wait, so we waited inside the waiting area. A group of people (who happened to sit in the corner close to the entrance) left while we were waiting, but the waitress never asked us if we want that table and we assumed that table was taken. She then offered us the table about another 15 minutes of waiting. Our server was informative and nice, so I guess that makes up a little bit of the earlier mess.
Ambiance: We got there around 8pm and it was a rainy day so it was pretty dark inside. Can't really feel the ambiance as we are sitting in a corner right up front where the door is.
Menu: Comfort food. Perfect to go when it is a rainy day. They have items such as grilled cheese sandwich (who would order that?!? Can't you make this at home???), mac & cheese, etc. They have daily drinks specials.
Food: As per our server, all food were prepared from scratch. We ordered the chicken sandwich with the lobster bisque soup and the Irish stew. The food was really delicious.
Value: The prices are a little higher than I expected, but the food was delicious. -

This is a busy place so come in the late afternoon or early evening if you don't make reservations and you are a family.
The food is DELICIOUS. Kids love their gooey sandwiches and soups esp the mac and cheese, grilled cheese and butternut squash and grown ups will love their ethnic and UK inspired stews - thai, irish, and otherwise. Very decent drinks list with beers and cheap cheerful wines by the glass or litre. This is a great comfort foods place with cheerful service great for kids and families. Parking isn't great as it is the street or pay parking by Lonsdale Quay. They have the stews and soups for take out by the way !!!
If you love to eat out once in awhile as a family, do come here as the food quality is consistently good and they do change their menus slightly by season. They have decent salads and appies as well as desserts. -

I must say my opinion of Burgoo has gone down considerably after frequenting the place over the years. Today was sort of the last straw and I am not sure if I would visit this place again.. My sandwhich was so sloppy and the chorizo inside was extremely dry, black and flavorless (you know- what happens when the chorizo is very old and past the expiration date..). I just could not stand eating that mess.. and really, if you enjoy the grilled cheese sandwhich, it's not rocket science to learn how to make it like that at home...and the soup they serve is seriously too thick to eat most of the time. For the price I pay here, I'd much rather go elsewhere. Although I remember the banana bread pudding being good.. Burgoo, I'm so over it.

I had high expectations for this place based on the good word of mouth...
I can honestly say that the dessert was the sole redemption of this meal: Bittersweet chocolate custard with cayenne/chili served hot over vanilla icecream.
Here are the notables in terms of my experience at Burgoo on Lonsdale:
* We were told that there would be a 15-20 minute wait for a table and weren't moved from the bar to our table for 60 minutes. Play by plays of: 'I think the table you're waiting on is almost ready to settle up,' proved totally useless, as in fact they were not ready to leave at all.
* BRING YOUR ID IF YOU GO TO BURGOO. My sister didn't have hers (it's not like family dinner on a sunday night usually prompts you to think of getting carded)
* My 'Mint Julep' was unforgivably terrible. Seemed to be lacking: an appropriate amount of ice as well as simple syrup. Pretty much tasted like I was sipping Maker's Mark with bits of herb floating around. The 'Hillside Estate Merlot' wasn't "big and luscious" at all but rather tasted young and tart.
* Food ranged anywhere from poor to mediocre. I've had better 'Butter Chicken' take out.
* Service was irritatingly poor up until we were seated, at which point our server adopted an overly familiar 'chill' attitude that didn't necessarily go over. My Dad questioned how large the side of soup would be with his sandwich and received this for a response: "It's a big cup of soup, just like it says on the menu." Them's fighting words, deary- you're talkin' to Bruce.
Oh, I should mention the jazz duo. They were a nice touch. Still... not enough to get me back to Burgoo. -
Review from Roanna Z.
After nearly killing ourselves on a Grouse trail (omg),
we were chilled and tired and in need of some warm comfort foods. Burgoo food is known for comfort foods.
I had the Butternut squash soup. This is no ordinary soup. It was creamy with out the cream, and full of flavour. The big guy had what I can only dream of:
A gooey grilled cheese and -(just because he can...) he also had the baked French Onion soup. Both looked to die for (and I almost died of jealousy while watching.) This place is torture for dairy allergic's.
Another of our party had the Irish stew, which was enough for two meals, another had the Cheese fondue and a Chicken Caesar sammi. Yummmmm.
I would not recommend this place if you are on a limited diet (like non gluten) but if not...
GO! Eat it all! Don't hold back! Enjoy these fattening foods!
(Especially if you just came off a trail). -

Burgoo is another hidden treasure in North Vancouver. I was here for several years before trying this place out. The menu is so varied, featuring food from around the world, that there is something for everyone. You could even go as simple as Macaroni and Cheese if you wanted to.
I went with a small group of people and everyone loved their dishes. It is a good idea to get there early on the weekends as the place is very popular and be very busy. It is a small restaurant so it does not take many people to fill it up. -

For a restaurant chain, this place serves up some healthy food: soup, stew and sandwiches. I'd recommend the tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich combo.
The portions are large, with perhaps the exception of the fondue. If you think of it as a single serving it's plenty, but if you plan to share you may want something more.
This is a popular spot, and often crowded. -
Review from namit m.
OK multiple dinners with Keller and Ducasse prevent me from giving this 5 stars.
But as a neighborhood bistro this one gets full marks. The grilled cheese is heavenly - maybe the best I have had and trumps anything the streets of Paris offer. The corn soup or the tomato soup are a perfect compliment.
Had the Tajine last visit and was very fragrant and flavorful.
The service is acceptable - they could make life easier by pre splitting soup for sharing but no that throws them off completely.
In summary - this restaurant hinders with my ability to explore new restaurants in the area as I keep getting drawn back.
5 stars Ok no 4 Stars ++ -

Dropped in for Saturday lunch. Have to say, was one of the most disappointing restuarant meals I have had. Two of us ordered off the Brunch menu and ordered baked eggs. I didn't know Oeufs Cocette could go so far wrong. The eggs were over cooked and much too peppered (couldn't even taste egg it was so overwhleming). My sister's was the same, it was supposed to be Mexican flavour but both were completely bland. We had nice winter salads with pear, I just wish the pear was even a little bit somewhat close to ripe. There is no point in adding fruit to a salad if it doesn't taste like anything. I used to love the Burgoo stews, so maybe I'll return at dinner but never again for brunch.

If you love fondue, this is the place to be. Burgoo offers a few different types of fondue to choose from.
Their menu also consists of some other french items such as french onion soup and ratatouille. A few of my favorites are the brie fondue, squash soup and their grilled cheese sandwich.
Burgoo refers to themselves as "food for comfort" this could be nothing from the truth. When its a rainy or cold day, Burgoo is the first place I think of going, the food is yummy and the rustic interior with fire places and live jazz music(on some nights) in the background makes you feel so cozy! -

Everything was good, but missing that "je ne sais quoi" (or in the case of the Kentucky burgoo, that "hell, I dunno"). Would come back if it wasn't so pricey!

Before coming to Burgoo Bistro, I had high expectations from the Yelp reviews as well as viewing the menu before hand so I knew what I would order once I arrive. However, Burgoo Bistro did not meet my expectations for the following reasons: long wait for the food and portion sizes.
My friends and I were seated by the window and put in our orders once we decided what we were going to get. About 25 minutes later, our food still hadn't arrived. The restaurant was not packed ir busy. And most of our orders were not complicated orders; a majority of them were mac and cheese, salads, soups and sandwiches. It's not that challenging to slap a sandwich together or make the soup (this should be pre-made!).
I ordered a Tasty Chicken Sandwich for $12 (roasted chicken, apple, cucumber and greens with house Dijonnaise, served on multigrain) with a spinach salad. Another order was the Banh Mi Xa Xiu sandwich (sliced bbq pork with house mayonnaise, pickled carrot and diakon, cucumber, sunflower sprouts and cilantro) with a Crab Bisque. When the meals finally came after another 15 minutes, I was disappointed except for the Crab Bisque. Both sandwich portions were not even half a sub. The Tasty Chicken Sandwich only had slivered chicken pieces (when I say SLIVERED, I mean so tiny and thin that I can't even taste my chicken because my greens and Dijonnaise were more than that). So not worth $12 for the sandwich. The Banh Mi Xa Xiu did not wow me at all. The only thing that I liked from the meal was the Crab Bisque and hence, that's where Burgoo gets its 2 stars. The texture was smooth and perfect as the soup swirled around my mouth as I couldn't get enough of it - spoonful after spoonful.
Like I had mentioned, I'm giving Burgoo a 2 star because of the Crab Bisque. Other than that, I don't think I will visit that place again. -

I don't know why I avoided this restaurant for so long. I have this memory of going to this restaurant years ago on Main street, looking at the menu thinking it was a burger place. I went there a few weeks ago for lunch after my sister went and loved it. Had a sandwich and it was fantastic. My sister had the Ratatouille and it was fantastic as well. Waitress was good, food was great and good value as well.

Burgoo is known as an incredible place for comfort food, but they're also a great place for brunch. I find I have to be in the right mood for Burgoo, but when I am, it's amazing. Heavy, cheesy food that fills you up and keeps you warm - it's an ideal place for a meal on a chilly day. In fact, I mark the dawn of winter by my first meal at Burgoo!

I usually eat lunch at my desk, but on rare occasions I venture out. Once I even went so far as to hop on the Seabus to answer the siren call of the grilled cheese sandwich at Burgoo. On a weekday at lunch, getting a table can be a problem, so my lunch date and I settled for the bar which was wide open. In an attempt to have a balanced meal, I got the soup and sandwich, but I didn't put the grilled cheese sandwich down long enough to touch the soup. $14 is pretty pricey for soup and a sandwich, so next time I'll definitely skip the soup. $12 is a lot for just a sandwich, but since it's pretty much the sandwich of my dreams, it's worth the money and travel time for the occasional indulgence. Oh no, I think I hear the grilled cheese sandwich calling again...

I LOVE Burgoo! This small restaurant has an intimate feel with a relaxed atmosphere, and the menu concept is interesting; one I haven't seen anywhere else. Each item on the menu is a specialty from a different country, so it's a truly cross-cultural dining experience. You could order a Mediterranean platter with olives and feta as a starter, a Moroccan lamb tagine or Indian butter chicken for a main course, and a Mexican hot chocolate chili pot for dessert. Be sure to order a mint mojito, or their homemade strawberry lemonade to drink.
