I believe this place is under new management. I went 2 to 3 times in 2012 and I haven't seen John the owner.
I used to go to this place once a week but ever since John left; it's not the same. I can't understand why, same menu, same staff, and the same food.
If John was still there they would have gotten 4 stars but w/o John; they lost a star. -

I have been going to Buon Appetit now for about 3 months and have not been disappointed. Everything is super fresh and they are really friendly. The place is also very clean. I used to patronize Rosario's for over 20 years until they sold me a bad product and refused to stand by it (bad move - you need to stand by what you sell)
They also have some basic meats such as pork chops and chicken cutlets that saves you a trip to the butcher. The pork chops are excellent -perfect for any type of prep.
The dry sweet Italian sausage is out of this world. Get a small loaf of semolina, some of the sausage and a cold beer and you are good to go. -

ASTORIA, NY
The sandwiches are delicious - good quality ingredients and huge size. One sub usually serves as two meals for me so you really get your money's worth. On top of that, the guys who make 'em are fast, efficient and polite. Can't go wrong with this place - a true gem up in Astoria.

I've ordered 2 or 3 sandwiches from here and the bread has been solid enough on the outside, yet nice and soft when you bite down on the inside, which is always a plus to me. Too many places serve sandwiches on rock-hard bread that ruins the entire thing from the jump.
Another plus is that it appears they will serve you any sandwich on GARLIC BREAD upon request. Meatball Marinara on Garlic Bread = dinner tonight/game over.
Keep up the good work BA - -

Catering;
Update: 11/11/11, They catered lunch for 8 in the city for me this week and the food was fantastic, and loads of it! Antipesto was hit the hardest then the Cookies were gone in a flash, make sure these two are parts of your order, but every part of it was good.
I spent $170 inc tax & tip for lunch and two days of leftovers1 Previous Review: Show all »

Astoria, NY
Recently, I've decided to go on a new restaurant quest with the help of yelp, since I've found myself eating at my same favorite restaurants over and over again here. This particular place I passed many times, without noticing once. Then one time I passed and looked inside and thought "huh, cute lookin deli." another time I passed and thought "huh, they have seating!" And then finally I passed and thought "remember to look this up on yelp when you get home." I'm so thankful I did!!!
Today my dude and I went here for lunch. WONDERFUL!!!! We arrive and all of the tables inside were filled with firemen. Within 5 minutes we realized they eat here all the time, as did everyone who came in - the deli staff and customers seemed to know each other well and everyone was super friendly. We looked at the ginormous sub menu (I want all of it!) and picked what we wanted. I got the "Back to the Future" but I wasn't sure what kind of meat was inside (they called it 'superstate' for some reason). The guy gave us a sample - salami. I think they got superstate from sopressata. Anyway I was pleased for the sample. My dude got the "Buffalo Bill". Both sandwiches - AMAZING. Mine was filled with wonderful quality meat, cheese, arugala, balsamic vinagrette, sundried tomatoes, etc. It tasted fantastic.
Also the service was great. I was searching for a black cherry soda that wasn't diet and there didn't seem to be any left. The owner (I believe he was the owner) went searching through the vast fridge trying to find me one, and did! Then since all the firemen took the seats, he brought us a table from somewhere and set it up and cleaned it and put paper on top. He was just the friendliest funniest guy, and then we had a delightful meal on top of it. Anyway... it was great. Totally coming here again and again. Had a good old fashioned italian deli feel. Great prices too! Yum! -

Used to live right beside this deli and went all the time. Then I moved a mile away and rarely get back over there, but it sure does make me happy when I do. I love putting their unique sandwiches in a wrap (Mission Impossible is my fave). Not your "typical" NY deli--it may feel like it when you walk in, but the food is amazing.

Great food! Good people! Millions of choices!! The only reason that it's 4 stars is that I haven't quite figured out why I haven't returned yet?? Astoria does offer several great sandwich shops though!!

Amazing selection of sandwiches for delivery or take out.
I moved in next door to this place and at first walked right past. It looked like more of a caterer than a deli. But being good to know the neighborhood yesterday we went in and I was amazed. They have a great idea of using whatever they sell in the deli and making a sandwich out of it. What does this give you? A huge selection of things to put between two pieces of bread. I got a DMV #1 with chicken/pepperoni/melted cheddar/cole slaw and bleu cheese. The bleu cheese and slaw went really well together.
If i would change anything, I'd like if I could buy a beer there. But don't you wish you could buy a beer where ever you are at any time?
I have vowed to eat every sandwich on the menu. -

First up this place is fantastic!!! The staff are super friendly and there is always healthy banter between them. I ordered 'something signature - your choice' sandwich and was not disappointed. Veal in teriyaki sauce with onions and bell peppers baked on the freshest bread roll - I basically inhaled it!
Can't wait to go back for my next round - $8 best value around -

Aye yo Sal Kris n Charlie's*, you got some serious competition in the bangin astoria sandwich game!
i looove a good italian deli, and i got overly excited when i saw the list of 5zillion heroes named for both italian movie stars (deniro, sophia loren) AND queens ish (astoria park, "let's go mets", ditmars blvd.) it was basically impossible to pick one, but i was quite satisfied with my choice, the "yankee clipper (joe d.)": chicken cutlet, eggplant, prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes, peppers, onions, and balsamic. the thing was absurdly huge (great value @ $7.50) and extremely fresh, obviously made with high quality i-talian ingredients. you can def get at least 2 meals outta these suckers.
i also tried a cobb salad here which was so so freaking good, and another huge 2-mealer. standard chicken, avocado, and blue cheese, but the mushrooms and red peppers were marinated italian style, and the "crispy bacon" was some kind of extremely addictive italian meat (who can say no to that?) it came with a big hunk of fresh italian bread and was quite filling for a salad.
buon appetit also delivers, so i'll probably be ordering the entire menu of sandwiches from the convenience of my bed in the next couple months.
*no disrepect. i sweat The Bomb & the Italian combo 4real -

The guys at Buon Appetit catered our gay wedding in Queens for 100 guests and everything was perfect!!!!! All of the food was excellent....delivered on time, more great food than we expected, with everything fresh, hot and delicious. Our guests all gave the meal great compliments. Buon Appetite helped us with menu suggestions and really know their stuff. Their price for catering this event was very reasonable and they truly gave personal attention to making sure everthing was 100% as ordered or better. These guys are very nice and we'd truly recommend them for your gay wedding, straight wedding, or any special event! Stop in the store for sandwiches too....these will be your new favorite sandwiches! THANKS YOU GUYS!!! Michael & Guido

What do you think it would cost for a foot long hero loaded with imported italian meats and cheeses on crusty fresh baked bread? How about if it was filled with homemade delicious roast eggplant with vegetables and a marinara sauce?
If you answered $6, (which you probably didn't) you'd be correct.
$6 is all it costs to get one of the finest sandwiches this city has to offer. The choices do not stop with Italian staples either. There are about 100 combo's to choose from to fit every taste. All this variety and quality is served up by a friendly staff, and an owner who takes pride in every sandwich he sells, and there is much to be proud of. -

Co-worker and I split 2 heros. The Jumanji hero was awsome and the hot homemade roast beef hero with gravy was great too. Roast beef wasn't tough after it was heated like I've had many times before. Great "neighborhood italian deli" vibe. Looking foward to try some of their soppressata next time I'm there.

Hands down, best sandwiches you can get in Queens. They even deliver, which is a huge plus. You can get everything from sandwiches to salads, paninis and burgers, plus a bunch of Italian pasta dishes and sides. $6 for a huge 12" hero, you definitely can't go wrong. The owner is such a funny Italian guy. Excellent and friendly service.

This place never let's me down! The sandwiches are made with quality Ingredients. An enormous selection of "different" types of sandwich as well as old favorites! This is one of my top three inexpensive restaurants in Astoria. Dont forget to try the prepared food as well it is just as delicious as the sandwiches! Definitely give this place a try. You will NOT regret it!

ASTORIA, NY
This deli has so many wonderful sandwiches. It's always difficult to decide which hearty sandwich to order. If you eat one of these heroes for lunch, chances are that you won't need dinner later. One of my favorites is the aptly named Off the Wall. It comes with eggplant, mozzarella, stuffed hot peppers, cherry peppers, minced garlic, tomatoes, cucumbers and chopped green olives.. It's an incredible alternative to some of their (delicious) heroes stacked with meats cheese and gravy.

I love this place for Italian sandwich. -
Review from Lauren L.
Had a mighty fine provolone sandwich here last weekend with extra pickles (just the way I like 'em). Prices were very reasonable (7 bucks for a huge sandwich on fresh bread). I haven't tried any of the numerous prepared salads, but they are always busy when I walk past so obviously they are doing something right.

Best sandwiches in the city... and for 6 dollars.
Fresh bread, lots of options. So many choices it's worth the hour long haul to Astoria to try to slowly but surely try them all. If you should be lucky enough to live in the area, then you should make this your new lunch spot. Also they make some pretty mean looking burgers and catering platters. -

For the last three years now, I've been going to Buon Appetit and have been eating good. The food is undeniably the best in Queens, and quite possibly in New York. There are other rival delis that claim to be sandwich "Kings."but Buon Appetit and their entertaining staff really do wear the crown. Buon Appetit offers a loaded menu of some of the best and most original sandwiches to make every visit a new experience. Pressed for time? No worries because the staff works quickly and efficiently to get your order to you promptly, without sacrificing taste or quality. Price and atmosphere are delightful as well. From the day I first walked in, and still today I am warmly greeted by the staff and owner. I'd make this deli a MUST VISIT for any Astoria native, or newcomer to the area.
