I only wish that Bulldog was closer to home... Open a Parkdale location pretty please?

I used to frequent Bulldog quite often when living downtown. It's a charming little place hidden on a downtown side street. Little known fact: Bulldog was on TV's "Restaurant Makeover" several years ago - hence the new looking, clean-lined décor. Apparently, it didn't look quite so great before the makeover.

Appearance aside, Bulldog espresso is to die for. Get yourself a cappuccino - Their milk foam is of the thick, dense, delicious kind. Their latte art is equally lovely. Ladies - you'll likely get a heart. Gentlemen - a very pretty espresso milk foam leaf will be coming your way.

I recommend the Bulldog patio on a sunny spring or summer day. There's a tall tree overhanging the patio, and more tall trees lining the street, so you really won't feel like you're sipping your cappuccino in the middle of a bustling downtown street.

I have had two coffees now from Bulldog - a double shot latte to go and a double espresso macchiato which I drank out the front. Both coffees have been very good, and excellent by Toronto standards (no offence!). Both were smooth and easy to drink yet tasted like real coffee. A mild flavour though, nothing overpowering. Will definitely be going back regularly.

Bulldog Coffee, where do I even begin to express my love for you?

Our affair began years ago, when my father introduced me to the sweet and delectable latte- Mr. London Fog, hand crafted by Stuart (the owner) himself. Me and L.F. hit it off quite nicely, before I moved down town and had the opportunity to try out an array of the other yummy coffee drinks Bulldog has to offer.

Situated at the near-corner of Church and Granby, Bulldog Coffee is a cozy, little coffee shop that never ceases to impress. Boasting a sleek interior, Bulldog offers a limited number of seats indoors. Don't be fooled, this may seem like a pain in the butt, BUT it creates a constant buzz of chatter, friendly faces and good vibez.

It's usually a full-house, but there's always that last convenient table waiting for you. ALAS, if you'd rather enjoy your coffee or tea in the warm sunshine, not a problem. There's bench seating out front for at least 10 people.

Every morning, baked goodies are put on display at the front counter. Almond croissants, pecan scones, slices of moist carrot cake. The list goes on. I'd recommend the white chocolate cranberry biscotti, or the chocolate-chip banana bread. Can you say...yum? Because... it's just so god-damn "yum".

As far as drinks go, I tend to stick to the Vanilla Mint latte, with an extra shot of espresso. It's refreshing, minty, and just plain delicious.

All-in-all, Bulldog has become my go-to coffee shop.

    MY LOVE WILL NEVER DIE!!!@3!

This is a great spot for a coffee on the go. Never been in love with their drinks, but their americano and drip coffee has given me good times, I've yet to fall for their latte based drinks. Much is said about their latte art, but each time I've been here my art has not been more spectacular than any other cafe I've been to that dishes latte art out.

I don't believe it's worth all the hype that they keep visible behind and on the counter since there are better indie shops around, but it's a great looking cafe, their food intimidates me a bit I admit and never looks like something I would crave.
Service is friendly, but I get a rushed attitude (Even when it's not too crazy) and tiny bots of their system makes me take a step back from a usual coffee stop. For e.g. they ask you how much room you need and then how much milk to add on my americano, so while it is convenient that they do all the work for you and you could always add more if you need, just seems like a tiny step too much in terms of a streamlined process.

Seating is tight but everyone seems to really get along with each other so it's happy times all around here.

One of my best friends moved to BC to learn latte art in the premier cafe in Vancouver.  I'd never seen it in 'performed' in person before... but what a worthwhile trek out to this trendy little coffee shop!

The owner actually made our coffees for us and did all the art right in front of us... a heart for my lady and an intricate web for me!

The cost was pretty much the same price as any other coffee in the city.  Go here for a coffee and a show!

We sat on the little outdoor patio and sipped away.  I would go back if I was in the area~

I have only had great experiences at this little coffee shop!

I am a huge fan of supporting the independent coffee shops around town and I have found this one in particular to be quite good.

I've only ever ordered the Americano here, but each and every time I go it never ceases to amaze me. It must be something about the beans they use. I'm not much of a sweets gal, but the array of pastries and desserts they have there are very tempting.

Did I mention that the location is on a cute little side street off of Church street? They've got a nice little outdoor seating area for you to sit and enjoy your coffee along with small amount of indoor seating.

I definitely recommend this place to any passers by! Just take a few steps north beyond the Starbucks and check this place out!

This neat little locally-run coffeeshop was a good vacay from the Starbucks down the street. I'd heard about their specialty-art lattes and just had to see for myself the coffee that'd won awards for art.

It's really small, right beside Brown Bag sandwiches (on my to-go list), and when we got there at 4pm on a Wednesday afternoon, it was "packed" (given that they only had seats to serve 10 people, tops.)
There was outdoor seating but it was raining so we just decided to take it to go.

I ordered a White Mint chocolate and my friend ordered a Mocha Marshmellow. Sounds good huh? It was. Not too sweet, just enough to satisfy a sweettooth. The designs were decent, but nothing fantastical.

And we shared the chocolate chip almond biscotti, which was pretty big but $3. I would say it was a little more than its worth but it was alright seeing as we'd split it in half.

I would definitely come here again, the baristas were nice (and diverse - an asian girl with a heavy accent, and a hipster dreadlock-sporting caucasian? Impressive.)

It would definitely help if there was more room but alas.

Vous cherchez un bon cafe? Come savor a Bulldog. You will taste the difference, indescribably!! Best of all, no after taste (however in this case, you kinda wish the taste lasts longer =P).

I love how the cafe is tucked in a quiet neighborhood downtown. It gives an NYC vibe which I heart =)

After reading some of the experiences from fellow reviewers, I must say that ,sadly,  I, too, had a disappointing time.

I came in with such excitement. I had read about their latte art and great coffee.  Perhaps, I was too enthusiastic. Latte art was nowhere to be seen in my cup. The coffee was Ok.

I had called earlier and was told by the owner they would close at 2pm but when I arrived not only were they open but they certainly didn`t close at 2pm.

The customer service here was so poor that even if it had the best latte art or the best coffee, I could not return.  I`m a really pleasant person and have a complete respect for and understanding for those in the food and beverage industry but I was really disappointed by the treatment from the owner here.

OK I have to admit that I am a sucker for latte art... And Bulldog Coffee latte art is just awesome... :)

Fully packed on a Tuesday afternoon.. I managed to get a seat enjoying this cozy space, watching the barista working side by side and just enjoying my cappuccino... I was not even on my Blackberry since I was out of power..

There are a lot of those bulldog theme drinks and treats... The nice barista did explain to me what Bulldog and Blanco Bulldog are!! :)

A lot of Ryerson students hanging around meeting up with friends... Just love the university vibe! Feels like I am back in school....

    Cuuuuuute!
The coffee is good enough to take to-go but I would much prefer to sit there and sip it slowly and enjoy the nice environment.
Perfect place to read, surf the web or chat with a friend.
Not huge, not cozy, but cute and welcoming.

Lots of people, but it' in an area that isnt full of cute cafes so this really does stand out.

It's a very!!! nice alternative to Timmy's, especially if you want your speciality coffee made by a human not a machine!

I'm a bit of a Food Network geek, so when I was looking for a coffee spot when I was back in Toronto, the Bulldog immediately came to mind. Fortunately, I happen to be geeky enough to know that sometimes you have to hide the fact that you're a geek...as I imagine the people that work here are often inundated with (and annoyed by) people gushing about how they saw Bulldog on the Food Network.

So, when I walked in, I secretly thought to myself how cool it was that I already knew what it would look like inside, because I had seen it on TV. Then, when I saw the owner outside with his bulldog, I secretly thought that was cool as well. I also thought it was cool that the coffee was delicious, and that it was served with latte art.

What was slightly less cool was the service. I've been here on two occasions, once with a friend and once with my sister. The first time I went with my friend, the barista was the gentleman that I assume is being referenced in some of the other reviews as the "bitchy" one. He definitely had a bit of a 'tude...but he implied that I was pretty, so I let it go : )

The second time I went with my sister, the barista was totally charming. He customized our latte art for us and joked around with us, and helped us try to find a seat even though it was obviously full-up. We also indulged in a brownie, and it was excellent.

I'm okay with coffee snobbery as long as it's justified, and given that I've never had bad coffee here, I wasn't miffed. It's always been very busy when I've gone, which says something at least...and although service is hit and miss, it's really pleasant on a good day. The cafe is cute and a nice place to enjoy a drink and chat if you're not being given the evil eye by a surly employee.

Love this place.  I will agree with other users that in the past, this place just dripped with elitism.  Though the coffee was delicious, I rarely went here because the barista was just intolerable.  Not a good environment at all.

HOWEVER, in the last year this place has really shaped up. The staff there now is really friendly, very helpful.  I always feel welcome to stay and drink my latte, or take it for the road.  No disdain for a take away cup or a newspaper or book.  Beverages are reasonably priced, around the same as your average starbucks, etc.  I havent had any of the baked goods but they look delicious and seem to be sold out by the evening (that's a good sign right?)

If you've heard about the bad attitude, or experienced it in the past, give this place another try.  I haven't seen any of that in months, makes this place deserving of five stars.

Getting a Bulldog at Bulldog is becoming a part of my weekend routine. The Bulldog is their "cappuccino-latte hybrid", and is absolutely delicious. I find lattes to be a bit on the heavy side for a drink (too much milk), so these hit the mark for me. I take my daily coffee(s) black, and these are strong enough to satisfy my tastebuds.

At $3.50 including tax I suppose they're equivalent to 'bucks, but I find it hard not to tip given the great service I always get here; never had an unpleasant experience.

Seating is a bit tight inside, but there is some outdoor seating as well.

For something sweeter, my gf swears by the Blanco Bulldog, a white hot chocolate you can add espresso to.

    Open daily 7-7.

Love this spot for a latte or Americano to go.I don't find it a very enjoyable atmosphere to stick around - it's very crowded and always busy. The drinks are excellent though. If you get an Americano, they ask you how much hot water you'd like. The latte's are topped with a heart. They also have a lot of different specialty lattes and mochas that are always changing.

As far as food goes, I've only had the blueberry scone , and it was very dry and stale. It was also a Sunday afternoon though, so I feel like it had probably been sitting for a couple of days.

Some interesting quirks: No skim milk; cash only; styrofoam cups; and instead of handing you your change, they place it on this little white plate.

    Drink: Cappucino

Atmosphere: Full of gay men. (Not that I'm against gays), but the barista I think was gay as well and in one simple word to sum it all up: A bitch. It was a nice day, but I guess everyone there that day were a bunch of gay men talking like...well, gay men... and I simply couldn't enjoy my coffee. Not to mention, the barista was extremely rude. I went in. My friend sat down. He looks at me giving me the 'hurry-the-hell-up' attitude. I order my cappucino, then he asks 'is your friend going to just sit there and take up space or if she going to order something?' I was apalled. I could have caused a scene, but I probably would have been bitch slapped by everyone there. MAYBE, JUST MAYBE because I was a girl or he was on his period. Who knows?

Verdict: Cappucino was very strong, I later on ordered a bar or something and it complimented the cappucino very well. Also, the art on it was very beautifully done.

Straight forward: I like it! I've even developed a tradition with Kate M. to hit this place up on Saturday or Sunday mornings/afternoons to debrief our weekends and lives.

The baked goods are always inviting and when I choose to indulge, I am not disappointed. But the coffee and drinks! Not just good, pretty. So is the barista who has made a tradition of pouring the hot milk for a latte in just the right way to make a heart appear on the surface. I know he does this for almost everyone (alternating with a leaf pattern) but still, I appreciate the detail and love.

Having said that, the servers are NICE. Yes, a bit particular, I was once asked to wait for my friend in line and not save the table for us, but the request began with "Darling" and I understood. The place is small. It gets busy. Plus, their system proved to be a better one anyways because once my friend got there we were in prime position to order and another table had opened up!

    Bulldog:  Bullshit.

Okay put aside gripes about bitchy barista and cramped space  and whatever and ask is the coffee good?  No.  Not at all.

I arrived in Toronto from the West Coast and, being a bit of a coffee freak, I turned to online forums to find the best espresso based coffee joint in Toronto.  Bulldog came up multiple times in coffee nerd forums as THE amazing spot.  So this was the first place I went to satisfy my craving expecting to be transported into coffee bliss with a latte.

What I got was a poor pour of espresso drowned in badly frothed milk.   There was too much milk, however it was not enough to cover up the fact that the shot was run too quickly, at too low a temperature.  Sour!  Blah.

Cut To: A year later and I'm stranded in the area, needing coffee.  I get to thinking that perhaps I had a rare bad experience, and all the rave reviews this place is getting are warranted.  So this time I ordered a cappuccino to go.  After one sip I realized that I will never go back to Bulldog expecting a well prepared cup.  Somehow the espresso tasted bitter AND sour in the milk.  I'm guessing the machine was full of old shitty coffee grounds that put the bitter notes on the sour shot gushing through the portafilter.

Okay, we've established that the coffee sucks.  Now we can gripe about the other things:

A styrofoam cup!?!?  Come on, really?  I don't like drinking out of to-go cups to begin with.  But styrofoam?  Besides smelling weird and feeling icky on the mouth, how about poor mother nature getting fucked over?  If we have to create waste from drinking coffee can we at least do it out of something that will break down in less that five hundred years?  Please?

And finally, the Barista that everybody loves to complain about.  I think that he is actually a sweet guy, and would be good for some interesting conversation.  I feel like his bitchy attitude is a bit of a show.  But too much of a show.  He takes the bitch motif one notch past amusing into annoying.

If this dude was pouring godly shots and marrying it perfectly with finely crafted microfoam it would all be forgivable.  But he's not.  He's careless and haphazard and the product suffers.

But then I suppose most people who walk through the door at Bulldog aren't idiots like me who care about this nonsense.

Probably the best espresso-based coffee in the city, that I've found so far, at least.  The Bulldog, a hybrid between a latte and a cappucino, is the drink I crave but can't get elsewhere.  The kids love the hot chocolate.  Baked goods are tasty enough too, but come here for the coffee.

FWIW, five years ago, this place had a rep for the owner having a bad attitude, but on recent visits I've seen nothing of the sort, and the other staff are completely friendly.

I can understand the overhype about this place. The prices are ok, and they make a very good impression by personalizing your drink with great latte art. And you can really call it 'art', they do amazing designs on every single cup.

I was served by a very friendly barista, who was multitasking like crazy, training a new girl at the counter, making coffees, serving people, and still had time to make beautiful latte art on my friend's latte. I asked for a very very very short coffee and he payed attention to it, and when I was leaving, asked how my very very very short coffee was.

I have to be honest and say that their coffee, although being very very very short, was only good. Nothing OMG SPECTACULAR. I should have asked for a mocha. I'm certainly going back there for one.

Bulldog's delicious lattes ($3.50) with their adorably decorated foamed milk and full butter scones ($2) are one of the few things that have helped get me through many a relentless winter. But sometimes, even in the cold weather, I yearn for an iced drink; like this one time years ago when I tried to order an iced coffee in the middle of winter. The bartender all but called me crazy to my face and said it was impossible. Fair enough.

And then there was this other time when I asked for my latte at 140 degrees (I know it's ridiculous, but I used to be a barista and can't have it any other way now) and the bartender whipped his head around to say "that's exactly what we've been trained to do". I couldn't even tell if he was being sarcastic. It's true, the service is often snappy, but I always come back for more with my tongue hanging out.

Summer is a great time to visit, not only because they actually serve iced drinks - my favourite is the hand-shaken iced chai latte ($4.50), but the seating is actually doubled with the extra outdoor tables and chairs set up. Enjoy it while it lasts!

Back when I was just a visitor here in Toronto, passing through and in want of an actual coffee and not knowing where to go in a sea of Tim Hortons and Second Cups, I hit up the Google. (This was before my Yelp days - now I know better!) "Good espresso Toronto", I begged of it. A few responses came out of that search, and my favourite of the lot ended up being Bulldog.

My standard, the soy latte, is what i'll get 95% of the time there (the other 5% will be an iced version of the same, really). A couple of years after my first visit, I dropped back in and the barista remembered me - the Australian girl who praised the delicious latte and couldn't understand the lack of all-round decent espresso places in Canada.

Now I live in Toronto and work about a 5 minute walk from Bulldog, so i'll drop in semi-regularly for a to-go latte. I rarely have a coffee there simply because (especially in the colder months) there's not a lot of seating. But what's better than wandering downtown gripping one of these delicious beverages in your gloved hands anyhow? Best of all, they're right near Ryerson University, which is a godsend during TIFF if you're around there for screenings.

Now, of course, I know of an abundance of other independant and fantastic espresso cafes. But I still maintain that my soy latte from Bulldog is one of the best tasting coffees i've experienced in Toronto. The only thing that could bump up my rating to 5-stars is not getting charged extra for soy milk!

And what is this? An independent espresso bar with a selection of staff offering grand expressions of ennui? Now that's novel. It may be a cliche, but these bored baristas serve up what I've found to be some of the best espresso in the city. I don't really care that the dude isn't up for a grin - that cappuccino is freaking amazing, and I wouldn't want to work on Sunday either. The lattes are smooth and prepared with beans that seem perfectly roasted. The Bulldog ( a latte and a cappuccino hybrid) is my favourite, but if you want something decadent, go for the Blanco Bulldog (oh my god. chocolate syrup swirls and magic - not for every day).

I haven't tried any of their baked goods (oh, except for the scones, which I LOVE - but I think they're made by an outside local baker, pretty sure I've had them at other cafes); I hear the croissants are fab.

They've got a few tables indoors so you can chill there, but Bulldog isn't really suited for lounging. But I do suggest drinking your latte in the glass  at least once - tastes so much better than in a takeout cup!

Bulldog is a very hip coffee joint in town. Not only is their java good, but it's also beeeeauutiful! They take special care in creating jaw-dropping designs atop every single glass.

And their coffee isn't the only thing they've got going for them, their food is delicious as well. I'm a big fan of their scones and their cookies!

The prices are reasonable and the staff is extremely friendly.

My only one complaint is that the space is a little too snug for my liking. In my books, bigger really is better ;)

Almost missed this quiet little coffee shop as it is tucked away from the the corner of Granby and Church.

I love that this place has really friendly staff. The gentleman who took my order was really pleasant, I've never met a barista as nice and friendly as he.

Ordered a chocolate latte, it was delicious, and beautiful, the design on my latte was impressionable and I appreciated that.

If you're looking for a cozy, friendly and quiet cafe for a small talk with friends (one or two, max, since the seatings and tables are very limited), this place will surely please you.

So I have a problem.  I'm a caffeine addict and lattes are my poison,
which is why I just HAD to go to bulldog to order a latte when I was in the neighbourhood.  However after dealing with the douchy male barista, the latte left a bad taste in my mouth.  Apparently they've never heard of "service" and I'm surprised there was anything in that tip jar of his.  It's too bad because I'm sure I would have liked it otherwise.

    Lovely lovely lovely!

First of all? The drinks! Yum! For $3-4 you get the fanciest and yummiest of lattes, hot chocolates and more! The best. And I mean that. They have certificates on the wall to prove it. The chocolate chai is delish!

There isn't much food here. You go for the amazing espresso. That being said - I highly recommend their blueberry scone. I love a scone that isn't too dry. Yum!

Now the people? Lovely! I don't know about you, but every time I've gone the staff have been the nicest! Recently I took my mom and little sister to Bulldog for coffee and the (may I say very very cute) barista was as friendly as could be showing them how he made their drinks! So nice!

Oh and it's close to where I live! Amazing. Love it. Go.

I was wrong about the 'bitchiness' being a disappearing trend.  I was in the other day and was treated like dirt instead of a customer who wanted to spend money.  I'd rather go to Starbucks... at least they aren't hurtful & mean when you walk in to their place of business.

This is what a coffee/espresso bar is about - friendly service and great bean-based-beverages. I have heard some complain about the service, but I have yet to experience a negative visit.
Bulldog is like a refuge from the bustle of the city. Their quaint layout and location provide solace while indulging, and the tiny store forces a sense of community on any patron.

A hugely popular place and it helps that their one of the only (or perhaps the only?) artisan coffee shops in the whole Ryerson area.

So: cornered the market is one reason to go here.  A second reason is the $2 quality Americanos.  They also do that latte art that's so popular on TV these days, and that's fun.

The one reason that I didn't always come here when I lived in the area is because the staff is sometimes snobby.  Not always, mind you.  I've had some great 2-minute conversations with certain baristas here while they assemble my drink, but then I've also had the occasional rude experince.

The fresh butter croissant for $2.50 has boosted my review one star. If I could do one and a half, you bet your butter croissant I would. So tasty, if I didn't have Annie M. as an audience, I would have had two...or three.

At the beginning I joined the hype over Bulldog, went and visited and had a pleasant  experience. I do like the design on my latte, goes to show how a little effort goes a long way. However, when it comes to the selection and the actual taste its pretty much like everywhere else.

The atmosphere here is always great especially in the summer time, that's when I usually make the effort to go hang out at Bulldog's.

The Makeover has gone to the head of this place. Decent coffee but the service is just down right horrendous. I am not going back there again as I am sure other people will happily take my money. The barista was following us with his eyes and made sure we return our used mugs/cups which we were going to return anyway. The scone and biscotti were horrible. The Cappuccino and latte were decent. Stay away folks!!

Best cup of coffee in the Church & Wellesley area. The serving sizes and quality of each drink surpasess Starbucks anyday.  The artwork created by the baristas using froth must be seen.  While the coffee and concept of this place area great, the lack of free wi-fi, it's small size and location are minor flaws in an otherwise ideal coffee house.

Bull Dog coffee is a great place to get a tasty cup of joe or specialty drink, for decent prices and no tax.  First of all, remember to have some toonies or loonies on you, or a least a fiver, as they don't accept debit and hate small change.  The atmosphere is bright and fresh, but the owner is paranoid about getting his white bench dirty, so brief cases and bags with 'feet' on them, on the floor, please.  If you've seen the Restaurant Makeover episode that this cafe was featured on, don't bother asking about it, as the "excitement has worn off" and they no longer make sandwiches.  Sorry Massimo.  My favourite drink to get is the 1 shot Bulldog ($3) or the chai latte.  I recently discovered that if you are there with a friend who doesn't want anything but you're planning to sit down, your friend will have to buy something because "it's a business".  Apparently popular in Europe, but I had not heard of that policy before.

You can usually read the mood of the baristas there fairly quickly, as they can be friendly or grumpy.  I've had pleasant conversations with the owner, and others that weren't so pleasant, so a head's up there.

Overall, a nice alternative to the usual Starbucks or Tim Horton's options in the Ryerson/Church St area.
