Delicious! It really seems like you can't go wrong with anything you order here!
If you know me, I always have the most difficult time choosing what to order. Here, that wasn't a problem. Our appetizer was the Edamame Ravioli, which I saw in a lot of the other reviews. (I think we got jipped with the dish though, since ours only came with three pieces and other pictures show a lot more-- one picture even has 6! Maybe they give you as many pieces as you have people.) But it did not disappoint. I also set my sights on the fish dishes-- Miso Black Cod and Sea Bass. I couldn't decide which one I liked better but, in the end, I think I preferred the Miso Black Cod. The Curried Cauliflower was aaaamazing, too! Especially for just being a dish with that name. It came with cashews and had some spice to it.

We all loved our food, and I can't wait to come back for more!

Why 2 stars? We sat in the worst possible table ever in the restaurant. We sat on the table besides the bar and between the way to the restrooms.

It was nothing but a bar lounge turned into 3 tables. And it was too loud and people were literally brushing against us near the bar. That was a total turn off and ruined the whole evening.

Coming back to the food. We ordered vegetable dumplings. They were arranged good. But they were gone on a Jiffy. Just 4 dumplings for 12 bucks? Seriously Buddakan?

My girlfriend ordered a classic Mojito, which was good. So, I did order one, thinking that it would taste the same. But the one which I got was too citrusy. So, I had to send it back.

I ordered a dragon tofu, which was really delicious. But I am surprised to see, Broccoli stalks in it. I've never seen even the cheapest Chinese restaurants use broccoli stalks. Using undercooked broccoli stalks, instead of the broccoli florets is never considered as Gourmet food.

My girlfriend ordered the Sea bass. As, everyone is mentioning here, it was succulent and yummy.

For Dessert, we ordered a Sorbet trio. Coconut and chocolate was good. But, Apricot sorbet - Thumbs down.

Customer service was good. But, the seating in a wrong place, totally turned off the dining experience. So, 2/5

    The food here was delicious.

    - Edamame Ravioli: Great! (We got only 3 pieces though, but other people's pictures show 4. What gives?)
    - Miso Black Cod: My favorite part of the meal. Delicious, sweet miso + melty-soft fish.
    - Sea Bass: Really tender
    - Curried Cauliflower: J & T really liked this. Somewhat spicy & has cashews.

Service was great. The waiters were obsessed with keeping our table clean, which is normally great, but I had a cold & blew my nose a lot. The poor employees picked up my soggy snot rags w/their bare hands. I wish they hadn't.

This was fourth time at Buddakan unfortunately this my least favorite of the four experiences. We went with a group of friends and ordered off the group menu. Big mistake. Portions that were served on the group menu were extremely too small, and left hungry. That being said, the service and overall quality of food was great. Bottom line stand clear of the group menu.

I haven't been to the Budda in a little while, so I am not going to comment on any food specifically, just what how I feel about the restaurant.

To capture how I feel, please view the following link..

    http://www.youtube.com...

If you don't want to watch it, the video is called "Sh*t nobody says" and it is basically some clever guys thinking of things that you would never actually say, playing on pop culture stereotypes or simply making intelligent observations.

Some examples: "I could really go for a filet o fish right now" or "my bazooka gum still has flavor"...clearly two things (*that I hope*) you would never actually say.

To get to my point, "Buddakan is really refreshing and I can tell why people love it."

The food has always been fine when I went there, but not worth what you are paying.  I think I get annoyed because people not from Philly always want to go there...and I am like this place is totally manufactured and has no real endearing qualities.  Then I end up having to go there when people disregard what I say...and the end result is another "meh" experience.

I don't mean to hate on Buddakan, but it just isn't that great of a place for the price you are paying.  It takes advantage of people who think they are getting a cool experience, but really don't pay attention to what is going on around them.  If ignorance is bliss, there are a lot of happy patrons at Budda.

    Just my humble opine.

I don't even know why I'm reviewing Buddakan. Everyone knows the food is fantastic and the atmosphere is both lively and pleasant. What else can I say?

I was here last for my boyfriend's birthday in June '11. There were about ten of us, so we shared. Everything was delicious as usual. I've never had a bad drink here either. It's not a place that I'd go on a regular basis or even for a special event because I've played it out. I highly recommend it to someone who's never been or to tourists though.

PROS: Delicious, fancy asian food, soothing ambiance, good for dates
    CONS: Pricey for small portions

As far as "fine" Asian dining goes, I think Buddakan is as good as it gets. Everything is more or less perfectly executed --- the meats are succulent and well-flavored, the sides perfectly complement the dishes, and the desserts are to-die-for. My only gripe is that I'll order an appetizer, entree, and dessert and leave only feeling 60% full. On days where my mouth craves exquisite flavors, Buddakan would fit the bill. On days where I just want something hearty and filling, I'll probably look elsewhere.

The food remains three to four stars; it's going down in my book to two stars because of cost and service.

My family has been coming for years, and the experience isn't what it used to be. On a recent visit, server was brusque and rushed us through the meal. Our plates were cold in the middle (even the liquid chocolate cake!), like they'd been pre-made and just warmed up. Moreover, the food didn't have the depth of flavor you'd expect given the claimed quality of ingredients. They're just not able to deliver a "dining experience", which is what they're marketing.

It's not *bad*, but it is no longer worth the prices they ask. Go somewhere less trendy and give these guys time to recover.

Came here for restaurant week lunch. very yummy, very quick service. got to Thai chicken salad which was phenomenal, along with the edamame ravioli and wasabi tuna tataki. I highly recommend the ravioli. Have been back a couple times and service is always phenomenal, food is always great. Only downside is price is high for such small portions. (but what can you expect!)

Food reminded me of ur typical take out chinese food. They do try to bring it in fancy ways and they pay alot of attention to plating but its the food that I care about and it was a big fail for me.
Prices are decent but I would not go back there again, Ever!

Not a bad thing to say. Was in Philadelphia on a conference from work, and we choose ot go here. For a party of ten, at 7pm, service was excellent.  Portions not very large, but moderate for the price. Drinks were all good, as our table tried each. Personally, the Life cocktail had a strong ginger taste, but was very refreshing.

Tuna pizza was fresh, and tasty. Grilled lamb chops were cooked perfect medium rare, were seasoned well and the pesto was spot on. We also ordered a side of the wasabi mashed potatoes, which balanced perfectly, especially for wasabi lovers. The five spice donuts with blackberry jam were fantasiic, but the ginger cream cheese for the dinuts put them over the top.

The ambiance of the restaurant is modern, and trendy. Beautiful place to enjoy a quality meal.

After many years of eluding this place, decided to stop by on a sunday evening...

    Appetizer:
Spicy Rock Shrimp Bao Buns: 4/5. Sauce has a real kick and the shrimp was perfectly crispy, but the condiments were all over the place.
Tuna Tartare Spring Rolls: 3/5. It was a tiny bit of tuna tartare stuffed into a deep-fried sheet rollup. Not bad really, but expected better than a simple gimmick... just give me the tartare straight up and it would've been better.
Wok-charred brussels sprouts: 4/5. Sadly, this side order was the best item in my opinion - if a bit salty from spot to spot. Sizeable portion in a bowl, presented very nicely.

    Entrees:
Kung Pao Monk fish: 2/5. Three miniscule deep-fried fish chunks, drizzled with a bit of sauce and a small amount of peanuts and veggies.  The combination sounded great, but on the plate it just didn't work.  In fact, I'm glad there was such a small amount.
Char-grilled aged beef: 3/5.  Good ny-strip, but I expected an asian flair that I didn't catch. The 'szechuan fries' were shoestring fries with a bit of horseradish-mayo on them.  Really? Marginally better than a chain steak restaurant.

    Dessert:
Chocolate Bento Box: 3.5/5. Assortment of six items, white-chocolate panna-cotta and chocolate dusted almonds were the best two, and the rest of the items didn't disappoint, though they could've been improved.

    Drinks:
Ginger Lime Soda: 5/5. bitter and tasty - fresh and refreshing, great accompaniment to the items on the menu.
Cherry Lemonade (soda): 4/5. quite good, though more sugary and pales in comparison to the ginger-lime soda

Overall, service was pretty good, but the food is barely alright - quite underwhelming based on our expectations.  With asian fusion places a dime a dozen (and many of them quite good), the price tag for buddakan really was not worth it.  $135 with tax before tip.

Frankly as good as it gets.

Let's address the negatives first-yes it's pricey and yes portions are small.  By small I mean the edamame  ravioli has 3 in it which yes is steep for $12.  This place isn't designed to be an everyday experience-more of something for a birthday, bachelorette party, etc.

Now onto the positives-the food is great and the atmosphere is unique. The flavor of the ravioli is very unique. I also had the sticky crab rice which was good.  Keep in mind though that you are paying for the atmosphere.

The alcoholic drinks are a hit too and aren't as overpriced as the food. The Zen-gria seems to be popular- made of White peach, Junmai sake, pinot grigio, and ginger brandy it's quite delicious although very gingery.

I hosted a dinner last night for 8 single 50+ diners.  I commonly request separate checks.  Buddakan indicated that they traditionally offer family style dining with one bill but obliged my request.

In short, the food, service, and accommodations were FLAWLESS!  My fellow diners also raved about their experience.  A condition of my rating is the handling of separate checks.  Once again, FLAWLESS!

As "Yelp" has described as a 5 star rating - "Woohoo! As good as it gets"

New Year's Eve dinner review, 4.5 stars rounded down.

Buddakan is an Asian-fusion, Stephen Starr restaurant in downtown Philly, blocks away from Penn's Landing (great for walking to see the fireworks after a late dinner). We came here for New Year's Eve because I had been wanting to try Buddakan, and because they allow you to order off of their standard menu for New Year's Eve instead of forcing you to eat a prix fixe menu for four times the cost like many places in Philly do for NYE.

Outside of Buddakan being great for NYE, the service is very good. Our waitress was very friendly and took pictures for my girlfriend and I. Pictures turn out well around the big Buddha statue (overall ambiance of the restaurant is nice and not too loud).

Food is very good, but portions small and on the pricier side. Appetizers run around $15/ea and are very small. We had the Kobe beef satay, which was only three small pieces of beef with some fried veggies. That was $17. Pork dumplings were $12 and were five small dumplings. Both appetizers were good, but I'd pass and try new dishes if I were to return.

For entrees, I had the lamb chops and she had the Yaki Udon noodles. The lamb chops were actually well portioned and done right.. I enjoyed them. The Yaki Udon noodles were good as well, but $19 for noodles even at this type of restaurant felt too high.

For dessert, we had the Chocolate Bento Box, which was a great choice. This is a huge dessert, with six different dishes.

See MY PHOTOS for the food.

I really enjoyed our NYE at Buddakan. The price was a bit high for what we got, but was still a bargain compared to other NYE options in the area (prix fixe menus), so I still give it a high 4.5. I rounded down because had it not been NYE, I would have given it a 4.

Definitely enjoyable but not sure if its worth the hype...

Food: spring rolls were good but not much better than the usual, same with the dumplings, cashew chicken was great but a little too much sauce for my liking, panna cotta was great - fabulous texture and somehow rich and light at the same time, dim sum donuts were good... But I've had things like this at a few restos, menu was varied but nothing amazing

Drinks: good selection, mixed drinks were delicious

Atmosphere: a bit cliche, but I'll admit I'm a sucker for the bass-y music and the red Buddha, clean, trendy vibe

Service: quite good, didn't feel rushed, not overly personable but that's kinda nice when you're trying to enjoy your meal with someone

I'd definitely go back, but not sure if I'd rave...

I finally got a chance to dine her thanks to restaurant week. I had Cashew Chicken, Edamame Ravioli and the Shrimp and Scallop Spring Rolls. For dessert, I had a very nice chocolate cake.

Overall, I was happy with my choices. Edamame has a pretty strong and bitter taste, but it was good to experience something that I have never had before.

The ambiance was cool. I went for lunch, so I'm not quite sure if I got the feel that Buddakan may try to convey. The soft light behind the white curtains probably looks nice and gives off more of a romantic feeling at night.

I've been wanting to come to Buddakan for as long as I can remember, but for some reason I never made it here. For my birthday my girlfriend surprised me by walking me down Chestnut St from Market East pretending to walk into every fine dining restaurant on the way to Buddakan.

It was a Thursday and we were seated right away. The dining room was about half full and the waiter came to us immediately. We ordered drinks,  edamame ravioli, and the shrimp egg rolls. Both apps were delicious and it was a great start to the meal.

I ordered the duck for dinner and it was cooked perfectly. My girlfriend ordered the Chilean Sea bass. I had a bite, the fish was over cooked and there was way too much sauce on the fish. For an almost $40 piece of fish you better cook it correctly. I was disappointed and my girlfriend did not enjoy her entree at all.

For dessert we ordered the donuts and the waiter brought them out with a big sparkler for my birthday. A little over the top, but they tasted great. I left full and satisfied. I didn't have to pay the $200+ bill since it was my birthday gift, but if I did I would probably be a little pissed. I expected much more from a Philadelphia institution and a Starr restaurant. Glad I got to experience Buddakan, but I will probably never come back.

Fantastic food!  Dungeness crab sticky rice + eggplant side dish = perfect lunch for two.  I think the eggplant was the best version I've ever had and the portion size was huge for a terrific price.  Service was excellent, especially the manager who went out of her way to make us feel welcome and appreciated.  Easy walk from the touristy areas of downtown Philly.

    First time dining at Buddakan.

I went for lunch with a friend, taking advantage of the Restaurant Week Menu.

The food was absolutely incredible. I had the Shrimp and Scallop Spring Roll, Chicken & Ginger Dumplings, Wasabi Tuna Tataki and Panna Cotta for dessert. At first, the portions of the three items making up the "bento box" seemed a little small - but they were perfectly portioned and left me very satisfied. The dumplings were moist and delicious. The spring roll was flaky and extremely flavorful. The tuna was extremely fresh and nice hints of wasabi. My favorite part of the meal was the Panna Cotta (with white chocolate and passion fruit, raspberry foam) - probably one of the best desserts I've ever had. Light, extremely flavorful, and just incredible.

The entire staff was very welcoming, friendly, and smiled a lot. The decor was interesting and the overall atmosphere was lively and exciting.

    I'd love to come back!

I know, I know, that's how it works at these fancy places... but for what I spent on fish I could have held my own fish fry.

It's expensive, it's delicious. The service is excellent, the menu is large enough to accomodate most tastes. You get what you pay for and if you can afford $150-200 for a dinner for 2, you're definitely missing out if you don't give it a try.

Edamame ravioli lives up to the hype, the sashimi is excellent, the lobster fried rice is exactly what you'd expect. Basically anything you order will be better than the best version of that item you've ever had.

My tip about Buddakan is this: go for lunch.

I used to go down there for lunch often because for such a nice place, they offer a bento box deal for $15 which I think is a pretty great deal. Choose one option in each of three categories and the portion is, though not huge, not too small... just right for lunch.

Any of the items on the bento box menu is decent, although some stand outs include the edamame ravioli, kobe slider, thai chicken salad, mushroom fried rice, wasabi tuna tataki, and grilled lamb chops.

For dessert they used to have a chocolate pagoda which I loved, but now it's a chocolate bento box, which doesn't really hit the spot as well as the pagoda, but still good nonetheless. The dip sum doughnuts are good too.

I just don't get the hype for this restaurant.

Everything is pretty good, but for all the hype it's just not that special.

When we arrived, first off we had to wait a good 10 or 15 minutes.  This is a bit annoying, but isn't too much longer than most places.  It was worth it as we got a great table with a good view of the restaurant space and by the window.

Our server was good and was able to offer some interesting recommendations.  The service was acceptable, but again for being so highly rated I expected five star level attention.

The food was pretty good, but again the huge hype caused me to be let down.  Everything was well prepared and tasted good.   I prefer the Sampan brussels sprouts to Buddakan's.   Other than that nothing really stuck out as particularly amazing or bad either.

Obviously Buddakan didn't steal me from my favorite place in the city and I probably wouldn't come back unless for a dinner party.

It's not that expensive, but it's not cheap either.  Everything about this place is good, but not spectacular.  It's definitely worth a try, but try not to let the hype get to you. You will be let down.

Buddakan was delicious but it did not live up to my expectations. The Pad Thai was so-so and the menu was not very extensive. I expected more food choices. However, the Cashew Chicken was YUMMY. Dessert was my absolute favorite part of my dinner choices. I had the Creme Brule and I am so happy I did not choose anything else. Just perfect :)

The service was perfect. The waiters/waitresses are so polite and helpful. Definitely Steven Starr quality service.

I'll definitely give Buddakan another try. I really want to try some of their other dishes, they sounded really interesting.

Ate at Buddakan during Restaurant Week. The servers were visibly tired but still were attentive and cheerful. (The place was packed even when we arrived there an hour before they were to close.) We waited at the bar for around fifteen minutes before we got seated, which I found to be a reasonable enough length of time.

Their RW menu was a nice preview of the type of food that would be served should I go there any other time. The food was delicious, if a little uninspired (I suppose I say this because I have a lot of exposure to the flavors of Asia). The scallop and shrimp spring rolls were tasty--the dipping sauces make it, I have to say. My braised short ribs dish was just a tad underseasoned, but is nonetheless filling and had a nice touch of heat. (Kind of reminded me of a Pad Kee Mao though.) My date liked her grilled pork that came with two huge onion rings--not something you see served together I must say! The ice cream we got for dessert was wonderful.

Overall, a great place for tasty Pan-Asian fare.

Snooty staff and over-priced food and drinks.  I was annoyed right away when the hostess took us to a seat next to the kitchen.  I asked if we could have a better table, and the hostess obliged, but I can't help but be angered by the fact that I was taken to a crappy table if there was a better table available (and there were quite a few), and it was a MONDAY night, AND I made reservations weeks ahead of time.  The waitress was a little snooty too.  I don't see what all the hype is about.  It's just an over-priced, pretentious version of PF Changs.

3.5 Stars for sure! We had to sprint from the cab to the front door to avoid being completely drenched from the down pour outside only to be met by a waterfall art piece at the entrance! If it's purpose was to set you into a monk like ease, it's brutally overpowered by the wall of noise and heart-throbbing base emanating from the lofty space. Book-ended by a neon bar area and a giant Buddha, Buddakan embodies the hyper chic young crowd that I knew Philly had hiding somewhere. I came here for "the scene" and hoped for some good food while I was here and that is what I got. While the cocktails seem a bit over priced they pour them heavy.

As food goes, an assortment of Westernized rice stir fried with crab or lobster meat, fried eggplant more elevated then your favorite corner Chinese restaurant, and some hefty noodles in sauce dishes typify the menu. Nothing blew my mind, and since we had a large group (dishes come "tapas style" and are meant to be shared) we pretty much tasted the whole menu. Nothing knocked my socks off but the waitress was fast and efficient, food came swiftly and the Japanese beer flowed cold to wash down the dishes (a little under salted for my taste, but that is much better then over salted)! All and all a fun and energetic scene, great for groups out to dress up for some solid food. They would benefit from a menu face-lift that brings a little more creativity and boldness to the every day titles and styles of Asian fusion!

Food .. every dish is awesome.  Spend the money if you want but frankly Chinatown will do just fine.

Instead, go to the bar and just devour guilt free on the Flourless Chocolate Cake w/ Vietnamese ice cream.  Its a perfect 10 and worth every bite and calorie.  Trust me.

Food was OK, nothing you can't find at any other Asian Fusion restaurants. Music was a little loud and food is over price. But the dessert was excellent.

Went to Philly from NY for the day. Had one of my best lunches ever. A $15 Bento Box w/ 1 choice ea. from "A", "B", and "C". All three arrived simultaneously. Had the shrimp toast, which was more like tempura, a chicken egg drop soup w/ noodles and 2 big pieces of chicken and garlic shrimp, which had broccoli and what I believe, were mushrooms, which I don't eat. The Baked Alaska w/passion fruit, devil's food cake, and coconut ice cream was out of this world ($12), but worth it. It diffused the spiciness of the shrimp, which left my lips tingling. Atmosphere is very chic and they have a branch in NYC.

I had the same waitress (I think she said her name is Linley) she's still a great waitress. The menu is slightly different.

For cold apps: Buddakan style sashimi (yummy citrus soy flavor), Tuna tartare spring rolls (so good i had to order another one), Crispy calamari salad (big portion pretty yummy dressing).

Hot apps: Kobe beef satay (Linley recommended.. which was delish the beef was so soft and tasty and the tempura was crispy and it just went well with the kobe beef), bao bun (spicy shrimp in a bun really tasty and different), and kobe beef wrapped in grape leaves (was the least favorite..i actually didn't like it).

Dessert: Crying chocolate (So delish...i loved the viet coffee ice cream), and Milk chocolate caramel tart (eh..i like the ice cream, caramelized bananas, and the crust of the tart).

It was not as good as advertised. Went with a co worker who had raved about this place, but was embarrassed after dinner.  Poor food... Good reception.

    Worth the hype? Yes.

As soon as you walk in you'll be relaxed. Love low lighting, chill music and fun drink menu.

We ordered a ton of appetizers and every single one was above average.

    Edamame Ravioli...good God, so great.

    I'm a fan.

The food was good. The desserts were amazing. The drinks are overpriced.

I was expecting so much more. The photos on the website make the place appear much larger then it actually is. A bit cramped for my style. And the noise level was definately up there.

Like I said, it was a good meal followed by a great dessert and a nice celebration of my sister's birthday.
