* You are sitting at table number crab *
This little cafe has a bit of character that pops out with the little touches.
The decor is a bit eclectic inside, with some dog statues and photos.
After ordering, instead of giving a number to put on my table, they gave me a cute little crab. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz... Instead of disposable napkins and cutlery as you might expect at a casual cafe, they had cloth napkins and stainless. Nice.
The soup and sandwich combo came with a large bowl of housemade leek and back bacon soup (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...). They had a chalkboard touting the back bacon as having just come in from a local farm. Nifty. It lent a nice smoky flavour to the well rounded leek soup. Very nice.
The "club" sandwich was the normal fillings for a club sandwich - but served in regular sandwich style of two slices of bread. They used a sourdough bread from nearby Mix Bakery (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) - one of the better bakeries in Vancouver West. The sandwich itself was piled high with lettuce, yellow tomatoes, fresh cooked bacon, and thinly sliced turkey. The turkey was the weakest part of the sandwich, as it was more of the supermarket kind than fresh roasted. But with the quality of the other ingredients it all worked. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
I will definitely be returning - this is a really pleasant little cafe for lunch.
P.S. Free wifi for the wifi campers out there.Listed in: Which wich is which?, Free Vancouver Wifi

Review from ELLE A.

Picture it: Vancouver, 2012 - It was a beautiful morning turning into a gorgeous sunny afternoon...Two gluten-free vegans fresh from a weekend trip to Seattle reminisce about the FABULOUS gluten-free pancake they had the fortuitous luck to encounter at Silent-Heart Nest Restaurant in the Fremont District. The Epicurean world was wide open... anything was possible...Fantasizing such a possibility in Vancouver, they google " BEST GLUTEN FREE PANCAKE IN VANCOUVER". Surfacing as second to "Theresa's" on Commercial is ...."THE BROWN DOG CAFE". Upon reading the link that describes the "best gluten free pancakes" as being the product of the Chef's discerning eye for gluten-free perfection, quoting the site:
"she wouldn't serve them until they were perfect and acceptable to even a non-gluten free customer. I would have to say that these were without a doubt the best gluten free pancakes I have eaten."
So there we were... staring at the very words that promised gluten-free greatness, and happy to commit our afternoon, our money and our 45 minute journey to be the proud recipients of "THE BROWN DOG CAFE" making good on what immediately surfaced when you type in exactly what you are looking for on "The Google".
45 minutes later, we arrive noting the cute little bakery next door "THREE DOG BAKERY" upbeat, sunny and for dogs... clever and cute but WE are fully grown humans and paradise lay two doors down inside the superb halls of "THE BROWN DOG...". We walk in and wait, looking around the empty restaurant, with a stack of menus on the counter... waiting our turn behind just one other patron at the till. Quietly looking around, we wait until the lady behind the till finally decides to address us, looking more like she expected us to ask directions than to order " the best gluten free pancake in Vancouver" or even a cup of black coffee for that matter. We hold up the menus that boast lunches and savouries and sweets - O My! LUNCHES AND SAVOURIES AND SWEETS - O MY!!
And we simply relate" You do Gluten Free?" and with a slight dismissive wave of her hand and a tone to match she says:
"No.. we don't DO gluten free... if you want a gluten-free substitute you can order fruit."
Slightly surprised, we ask again- "fruit?" To which she replies .." Or chilli... and we ONLY do TAKE-OUT right now..."
And THAT my friends, was THAT...Not with a bang but a whimper... Ask me how we went from a site that raved about THE BEST GLUTEN-FREE PANCAKE to a fruit and chilli takeout joint I'll never know... how we lost an hour and a half round trip out of our gloriously short day, I'll never know - Oh WAIT - I DO know - Because THAT WEBSITE SAYS SO!!!!! SO PLEASE take down that informative "One-Sheet of Deceit", aka "The Roadmap to a Real Disappointment" ... I doubt we would have been the first ever to google the awesome possibility of a gluten-free pancake in Vancouver, and I doubt we would have been the first to walk in and meet the eloquent cafe concierge and her compassionate understanding that folks may show up for what is advertised. A little grace would have been sweet - I would have bought SOMEthing, ANYTHING there to make the trip worthwhile. But no - like the way of the elusive gluten-free pancake in this petit Point Grey fruit and chilli NON-hangout, so went the simplest of genuine courtesies of being nice.
If you are at all curious as to where we redirected $50.00 of our hard-earned dollars... we went to The Wallflower on Main Street... (*a-hem* check out our review of The Wallflower) and if you ever in Fremont - the SILENT-NEST RESTAURANT is a MUST DO if you're gluten-free and vegan and really appreciate decent service and welcoming attitudes...and funny on you if you thought we ended up at the "THREE DOG BAKERY" - though we would have had better luck there than at the "DOG" ... Good Luck and may the force of awesome entrepreneurs and restauranteurs be ever in your flavour..Listed in: GFCF does not have to be a…

Can someone say vegan chocolate brownie overload! Seriously the best and biggest vegan brownie i have tried in this city.
We wandered in here to grab a quick coffee before our walk and i couldn't stop staring at people's food, they also have a breakfast sandwich, so you know i will be back for that. Our Americano came with a tiny muffin that was packed with a raspberry, banana, and coconut. Way to win me over with that. The coffee was great as well, it is locally roasted. The entry and the way the line forms makes it a little crowded but that just means you get to talk to people in the line. Lots of gluten free and vegetarian options. -

Popped by with a friend because we were craving breakfasty things in the evening, and I ordered banana caramel crepes (yes, I know, more dessert-like than breakfast but I couldn't resist!). They were fluffy and the perfect texture, and the caramel sauce was to die for.
It was quiet, and the guy working the espresso bar/grill was wonderfully sweet to us, and did a lovely job with the food as well. My friend ordered a dish involving asparagus and eggs of some sort, and he was pleased as well. I loved the photo wall of people's pups- totally charming. I would definitely go back the next time I'm in the area. -
