Review from Jeanette B.
Edmonton, AB
For some weird reason, I never knew about this bookstore. Maybe that's because I rarely go North of Whyte Avenue. I also think it's interesting that this store is right by the big and evil Chapters bookstore. I think this is actually a brilliant idea, since Broad Valley Books sells used books, so anyone who's on a budget might consider this store after feeling depressed about the expensive books at Chapters.
I thought Broad Valley has some interesting reads. I saw a book by Grant MacEwan. I had no idea he published anything. Actually, I'm not even sure if this is the same Grant MacEwan of the College, but I'll just assume it is. I saw some Hemingway books here and lots of great classics. I kept seeing titles I had never seen before that just seemed interesting, like the one that said, "This Book Will Change Your Life." It wasn't your usual "life changing" book. It seemed hilarious and very quirky. I also saw lots of books on writing and self-publishing. I also like the old hardcover Dickens books. I didn't bother to check how much they cost, but I'm sure they were not cheap.
I was often confused in this bookstore, because I couldn't always see what section I was in or looking at. I also couldn't find the price of many books, but the ones that had prices were fairly reasonable and usually at least half off the cover price, depending on the quality of the book. -
Review from Lauren N.
Broad Valley Books is an independently-owned bookstore that buys and sells gently-used books. It's a fairly large book shop, with a great selection in scholarly and classic pieces. I found a hardcover edition of Ernest Hemingway's short stories, practically new, for under $20. I was slightly disappointed in the size of their overall fiction collection though; they tend to have more non-fiction books as a whole. I admit that I usually like reading fluffy books, but they didn't have many of these. They do have a large collection of children's literature however, on the far right side of the shop. It looks and feels like an old-fashioned book shop too, with its tall wooden shelves running along the walls, and the old wooden floors that creak. The service desk is the first thing you see when you walk in, and it's usually covered with stacks and stacks of books, just like in the movies.
