Britton's a simple, classic, well-stocked news shop. On the weekends we pick up a New York Times for my mother, a magazine for me and hockey cards for my son. The man behind the counter is helpful, and very kind to my son. Last week, he gave him a quick and cheerful math lesson when giving him his change from his hockey cards - it was very cool.

You can make a good afternoon in the Glebe by including this place as one of your stops.

There are plenty of coffee shops on or just off Bank Street and I'd suggest hitting up Britton's first to pick up the reading material.

They carry pretty much any major newspaper, including international ones and dozens upon dozens of different newspapers.

When I lived around the corner I used to pick up the New York Times here because few other places in the area carried it, and take it to either Starbucks or Bridgehead and spend my morning/afternoon with it.

They also have books, including some local ones.  I grabbed an older copy of a political biography once as well. That sparked a conversation with the man behind the cash register about the state of Ottawa politics today.

I found the man extremely pleasant and smart and he was always friendly when I saw him working.  The prices are pretty well average since most of what they carry is pre-set from publishers.

Britton's has been a mags and fags institution in the Glebe since the 60s. They provide a great selection of magazines, a basic selection of popular books, tobacco products and a better atmosphere and newspaper selection than the neighbouring Glebe Smoke Shop. However, this place isn't a 24/7 store like their competition next door. If you're looking for a late night pack of cigarettes, you may have to rely on the Glebe Smoke Shop.
