I can't count how many times I've stumbled into this place at the most ungodly hours after a very long night looking for nothing but bread, lots and lots of bread to suck up whatever it was I was drinking all night, a nice cup of coffee and SOMEWHERE TO SIT DOWN

Breka is GREAT. It is and its not just because I can come in here at 3 in the morning, recovering from a night of debautchery and still find it in me to INHALE 2-dozen donut holes in one sitting without garning some piteous stares from that very nice guy who works behind the counter--- NO, not just that its OPEN 24-hours or that their chairs are actually pretty comfortable and that the coffee is good...

NO. Not just because THERE ARE SO MANY PASTRIES and that EVERYTHING seems to taste good... even those $1.00 sale cakes that are a like a day old or whatever, they're still pretty damn good. AND ITS NOT JUST BECAUSE if i feel like having some tasty grilled cheese (there must be something besides butter and cheese in that thing) at 6 IN THE MORNING, I CAN have it, here. AND its not because those little kuffle cookies are so insanely great that I have to buy them in hoardes to keep in my house for when I feel like munching and feeling my thighs jiggle... and its not even just because the people who work here are actually friendly

IT IS because I once came in here in the afternoon and they were selling individual banana cream pies and I sat down that night on my living room floor, contemplating my eternal singlehood and ever-expanding ass, when I took a bite and sighed, because oh my god I think my mouth had an orgasm of custard and FRESH bananas and whipped cream...

Lovely bakery with soooo many different baked goodies, coffee/tea, paninis, sausage rolls, sandwiches, fresh breads, cakes, pies, and donuts. The smell of the bakery is intoxicating and you really can't walk by without stopping to drool over the large glass display of freshly baked items.

I love that you can get just a piece pie or buy a whole pie. Easier than baking. They even have themed goodies, ex father's day cookies, Canucks cookies, etc. so don't fret if you need a last minute hostess gift or don't have time to bake for guests. Breka has you covered.

Only downside is that the gluten free, lactose intolerant or vegan eater will walk out empty handed and disappointed.

Breka is amazing.  You guys make me (yes that's right you have some sort of magic spell over me) get into my car at midnight, yes, fucking midnight, to come there and enjoy an awesome piece of cheesecake, vanilla slice or German chocolate cake, or some other sweet item winking at me or those amazing pretzels....how about the Chala bread and I am not even Jewish.  I bought two Chala breads one night...one with sesame and one with poppy seeds.  Couldn't tell you which one I like more because I scarfed them down so fast that I couldn't make out the difference in taste.    Are you kidding me!

One night a very friendly man on the other side of the counter changed my order on purpose.  I had order a cheesecake and he said "you've had many cheesecakes here, why not try this piece of cake for only $1.00?"  Relax Yelpers, before you pass judgement, it wasn't an old piece of cake.  It was only a dollar because someone changed their mind on a cake order and did not pick it up...so instead of throwing it away, they were practically giving it away for a buck a giant slice.

Bro, I don't know what the hell cake that was, but it was so bang on with the chocolate drizzled on top of some sort of cherry, berry compote.  It was so moist and to this day I have never seen it again.  From what I remember, some customer asked for a special order of two different cakes mashed into one or something like that.

Seriously, stop it!  You have an addict on your hands.  Oh, can I please order an Americano while I write this.

Speaking of things I like there....PLEASE PUT THOSE PRETZELS IN THE SUPERMARKET.  Those pretzels are perfect.

    Delicious place. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Come to think of it, it's 7:54 right now, guess I'll be heading over there in a few minutes.

After eating my sweets I went back to the counter and bought a loaf of bread to take home.  Clerk ran down the bread menu I chose a 7 Grain Rye that was so Fresh at 9:30pm on a Friday Night that she would not cut it. Its a great loaf of bread it sliced great and tasty. Prices where good and customers where friendly ever thought the place was packed.

We drove into Vancouver on a weeknight evening and needed a moderate snack around 10pm, preferably within close driving distance to our B&B in Granville. We didn't want a greasy spoon and I was craving a donut. Breka was perfect!

FIrst off, the staff was great. Speedy, friendly, and patient as we first-timers browsed their impressive selection in the glass cases. Cakes (whole or by the slice), donuts, cookies, strudels, meat pasties, panini, beverages, espresso bar... not to mention over a dozen kinds of bread loaves! I had a goat cheese and mushroom quiche and nibbled my husband's vegetarian panini - both were heated after we orded and tasted wonderful. We split an apple fritter for dessert and took a giant rum ball to go. We didn't have coffee but were happy to help ourselves to water from the pitcher

We were lucky enough to grab a small table - the seating area is not very big and was filled the whole time we were there. Several students with laptops and coffee, plus a smattering of others. It was pretty chill even with lots more people coming in to take food and coffee to go. All in all, we were happy with our choice and will probably stop in again before we leave to take home a loaf of bread and maybe try a few more things!

Vanilla slices, breads, and cakes oh my!

I wondered down a beautiful path....a path that ended on Fraser Street.  I was on a quest introduced to me by a friend: A quest for a bee sting cake.  I wanted to get my sister a unique, yummy, and perfectly delectable confection for her first birthday celebration here in Van.  And what I found was a perfectly delightful...UNDER $8...awesome creation in the form of their Beinenstich cake.
Equally as worthy of this quest was their vanilla slice....metaphorically my emerald palace of sweet goodness.  Just try it.

And what tips me over the edge to a full 5 stars is the fact that they are open 24 Hours!  I can follow the yellow brick road quiet literally ANYTIME I want.  Perfect.

Just an update for my previous Breka review -

Here's a list of stuff you've got to try:

    1. Their paninis. Particularly their Vegetarian or Bocconcini ones.
    2. Their cookies. Fresh baked, chewy, DELICIOUS!
    3. Their vanilla chai tea lattes. Mellow, not to sweet and great on a rainy Vancouver day.
    4. CHEESECAKE!
    5. Their white bread is delicious. You could eat a loaf on its own within minutes.
    6. Their Mac n' Cheese is also pretty tasty.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it and be satiated, is the following.

Find a way to Breka Bakery and Cafe- time is inconsequential as they are open 24/7; the 49 bus is your best bet.

Be sure that the door is cleared before you attempt to open it, for its place is a bit of an architectural mishap.

Stroll-in. Take the opportunity while you're waiting in line to sniff out what it is that your stomach longs for. As Obi-Wan Kenobi would say, "Feel. Don't think."

Halfway into the line, you'll learn that you're feeling a bit impulsive, and even though you've been telling yourself for the past 10 minutes, "Triple fudge brownie, triple fudge brownie, triple fudge brownie!" ...you'll get to the cashier and they'll ask you, "Have you ever tried a Kuffel?"

Don't let this throw you off, young padawan- this is the secret message that you've been waiting for. Answer honestly, order a dozen kuffels, exchange the goods, and walk away. Okay, get the triple fudge brownie too. ...and a couple of their birds nest cookies. ...oh alright, just get whatever you desire, but make SURE that you get the kuffels.

Recommended Main Deal: It should be obvious from my instructions above.

Score: a dozen kuffels. Can you handle that, young master jedi?

Open 24/7 with great food, drinks, and a bakery with specialty breads and delicatessen delights. I love the challah bread, cinnamon buns, paninis, tuxedo cake, tiramisu cake, and fruit flan. Always top notch bakery items (sweets and bread).

The only downside is the lack of seating. It's small and because it's 24/7, a lot of students use it for studying. You could fit maybe 15-20 people seated.

Breka is one the few places in South Van that is open 24/7 besides Denny's and 7-11.

Good service currently, but could use more staff.
Baked goods are always fresh, everything taste homemade.
Sandwich's are prepare I wish they would make them fresh in front of you. Mac and Cheese is ok for $4.00
    Atmosphere needs alittle work.
You get ok value for your money..Breka gets 4 stars because they are open 24/7.

Although you may not be able to grab a seat here you definitely can leave with a good smoothy, a loaf of bread, a cake, a couple of nougat cookies for all under 15 dollars.

They have an assortment of fresh bread at all times of the day and they never are too busy to slice it for you. All of the whole cakes that I have bought have been absolutely amazing and perfect size to take to a small dinner party of 10. I can't even just pick one to recommend they are all fabulous. The sliced cakes that they have there are not as impressive though... not sure why.. the eclairs are the exception.

My favorite smoothy is the blueberry pomegranite smoothy. I dont know what they put in there but yummy yummy yummy. Better that this smoothy is avail 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Service is pretty much always really good. If you are lucky enough to grab a seat and use their free wi-fi then you might get some free samples from the staff.

(Dont forget to try the nougat cookie!)

The cherry on top of all of this are the half chocolate dipped nougat cookies @ .95 a peice ...

This used to be the 'IT' place when the cafe first opened.  24 hours, good selection of coffees and dessert items but it has gone downhill since and starting to have the look and feel of the shady Duffin's Donuts in the neighbourhood.

The tables look kind of cheap and couches are kind of rugged and makes you wonder how many patrons have accidentally fallen asleep on those couches.

When you come at night, it seems like the ventilation system is quite off and broken.  There is condensation and overall, it just feels dirty.

The selection is not bad, I would highly reco the fruit smoothies because they really are quite delicious.  All of them.  Everything else is mediocre, not real standpoints.

The only thing that stands out in this cafe are the fruit smoothies.  They're amazing and probably the only reason why I would come back.  For take-out.

Decent coffee at this 24-hour bakery and cafe.

Sometimes it is crazy busy, or noisy from the music.  Sometimes the A/C makes it very cool in there.

No doubt though is that their pastries, cookies and cakes are amazing!

Usually when I enter an establishment that is being run by a group of university age employees, the service is sub par. You know, the employees are too busy talking to each other to even notice you and when they do, they look at you as though you're intruding on them. Well, this was NOT the experience I had at Breka Bakery. There was an older woman seated near us who was eating a yummy looking piece of cake and one of the employees checked in with her several times to make sure she had everything she needed, brought her napkins, etc. I was really impressed by this level of service for someone who spent less than $5.

My wife and I had a cup of coffee, an orange juice and a couple of cookies. Everything was great, especially the cookies. I'm excited to return to try some of their other varieties. I can do so any time of day since Breka Bakery is open 24/7!

I have loved this place since the first time I walked in. Vanilla slice? Yes. Strawberry cream puff? Yes. Almost every other pastry? Yes. I have yet to find something that is not amazing. The only thing holding me back from coming here more often is my waistline. In a perfect calorie free world, I would make this a daily visit... Oh.. And the fact that I now live in California. It's one of my must haves whenever I come home to Vancouver :)

They had a lot of thing I would love to try, but this time I was in for bread. So I bought a loaf each of the white bread and the brown bread. I picked up a Triple chocolate bar to go, but that got ruined before I got home, as I had to stop at a few places before I finally reach my place. Overall, the place looks to have a decent seating area. Love the art made of framed flour. They have earned a recall.

Breka is less glamourous than some places downtown, but gives Fratelli bakery and Whole Foods a run for their money. Also, the prices are right, the hours are fantastic -what better place to cram for an exam after midnight? Breka is perfect for curling up with a textbook and a slice of fantastic peach/apricot cheesecake, kuffles (kinda like a rugelach at Solly's with pastry/cookie dough rolled around nut filling), Quiches, salads, fresh juices, coffee, etc.

Breka's apple and poppyseed cakes are to die for, I agree. They are also one of the last remaining central European-style (I mean German/Polish/Russian) bakeries in Vancouver making a variety of fresh yeasted or sour chewy airy crusty rye breads (six or seven kinds) with whole grains or not as you choose.

Breka has another European dessert secret that they used to only make on Fridays for a while after renovating into the cafe they are today with their new management around 2005. The other day I was there on a Monday or Tuesday and they had it... Maybe it is available more now.. Now I have an excuse to drop in to test my hypothesis. They make fantastic non-flaky pastry hazelnut or poppyseed strudels. These are made nowhere else in town. Like rugelaches and kuffles for their filling? You will love these. They also make a good regular puff pastry strudel, but those are everywhere. (And the best ones are in Burnaby, but I digress). They are a little sweet, but not too too sweet. Perfect for breakfast, or for tea and a good textbook.

Breka needs to make better fillings for their eclairs and sliced cakes - I don't like stabilizer or whatever it is that most  bakeries including Breka and Fratelli use in whipping cream and bavarian or custard fillings... Other than that common problem to Vancouver bakeries (dream whip and gelatinized, artificial fillings and creams), I really like just about everything about Breka.

Once upon a time I lived around the corner from Breka for a few months. It was a gem in that otherwise-hostile (to us) neighbourhood! I bought a loaf of freshly baked bread every week, and always received totally sweet service. The baked goods all look sweet-tooth-delectable (though I can't eat them). The coffee isn't bad either.

Breka routinely amazes me with their incredible variety of pastries and breads.  Their cinnamon buns are delicious with or without the icing.  Every Friday they have a great assortment of Challah bread.  I can never decide between the sesame or the poppy seed.  I love both!  The tiramisu is scrumptious and the New York cheesecake is the perfect foil to a nice cup of their coffee.  All in all, you cannot go wrong at Breka.
