Review from Angela L.
My friends and I decided to get an early start to our Friday evening and lined ourselves up at the very small bar for some vino before dinner. From the wine list that is conveniently divided into three sections (basically: cheap, good, and excellent), I was able to find a satisfying pinot blanc ($7 by the glass) from the "pas cher" category. For dinner, we took the bartender's recommendation for a bottle of J'LOHR Californian red ($45), which was enjoyed by all.
The goat cheese gratin with leek and potatoes ($12) starter that we shared was nice and not too heavy. For dinner, I had the daily special: an incredibly bone-filled "skate wing grenobloise" ($19) which came on a bed of mushy mash and was sprinkled with tasty capers. My friends ordered the incredibly fatty, but succulent braised beef ($15), lightly grilled salmon with hollandaise ($16), and satisfying quiche florentine ($12).
Located steps away from the Centre Bell, it's understandable why this French bistro features Canadiens flags and flat screen TVs on the wall - it caters mostly to people going to hockey games and concerts. From its camel coloured banquets to its candlelit wooden table tops to the paper place mats that double as menus, and stripped of the lively atmosphere that the game night crowd must bring in, the decor seemed a little lacking to us. I imagine this would be a decent place to join a lively post-show crowd for some fine wines and a light bite after the right concert.
