I"m a bit of a stationary whore, so imagine my delight when I stumbled across Box Paper Scissors in the heart of Kensington.
The minute I walked in, I was greeted by two lovely women. I spent a solid half hour looking around. They have SO many cool things!
For you Torontonians, it's like the 'Cards, Presents and More' store on Queen Street West. For you Calgarians, it's like The Social Page, but a lot better in my opinion. The store isn't overwhelming when you walk in, and the stuff is laid out beautifully so you can see what is what.
This fantastic store is only a 2 minute walk from the Sunnyside train station and they've got everything from wallets to greeting cards, little knick knacks to gift boxes.
I truly do like this store. The next time I'm helping a special someone celebrate their birthday, I'm definitely heading over to Box Paper Scissors. -

My husband and I recently got married in a ceremony with four people in attendance and were quite happy to for the most part opt out of what for many I am certain is a stressful therefore forgettable waste of time and money. The only official thing we chose to do outside of actually get married was to send announcements out after the fact as my husband and I both have friends and family members all over the world. We wanted to support a local business so several months ago we walked into Box Paper Scissors with an awareness of what a difficult type of business this would be to run, particularly in relation to Wedding culture and the hysteria surrounding it. Our approach was fairly irreverent because we intentionally did not want to come off as high maintenance. We had a simple request, we wanted some nicely produced announcements created within a reasonable timeline (as we were already delayed getting them out due to the postal strike). The owner showed us a sample and I thought listened to us as I felt confident we were on the same page. She told us she would come up with some proofs as soon as we sent her the photo we wanted for the front of the card. She quoted us, based on our conversation, $360.00 which we thought was reasonable for what we believed she would create for us. Here is a timeline of events.
-Sent photos within a week
-Received email back on the Monday that the proofs would be ready the following Tuesday
-Didn't hear back the following Tuesday
-Followed up the following Monday
-Was provided with proofs that looked nothing like what we had agreed upon that Monday evening along with a confirmation of a date a month later than what was originally promised
-Sent polite email expressing disappointment, was provided with new proofs the following day along with a corrected date
-Husband paid a visit next day to firm up understanding and expectation of the project
-Received announcements several weeks later that were nothing like what was originally discussed
To make a long story short, in the end we were presented with what looked like home printer produced funeral programs, they looked NOTHING like what we were shown from the start, the paper was office paper quality and the photo on the front looked as though it had been produced with an old office scanner. We were shocked. We are honest people so we paid for the work but after tense discussions between my husband and I, we chose to send her an email expressing our disappointment. She replied with a breakdown of what a nice announcement would have cost (suddenly she was able to break the cost down), claimed she did a test print for my husband (which she did not) and conceded immediately to returning our money, minus $60.00 of it. The fact that she wouldn't even consider fixing the issue spoke volumes to us and clearly indicated she didn't care about the project from the beginning. Which really is her prerogative but she should have communicated that to us. My thoughts are that she was clearly just concerned about making a sale and because she deemed it a fairly cheap one she treated the project cheaply. What she produced was not explained to us, she took no time to communicate with us without our prompting, she didn't seem at all concerned with ensuring that our needs were being met outside of just reacting to our consistent concerns throughout the project.
In the end my husband and I designed our own announcements online at Vistaprint, which arrived yesterday and were perfect. We also got 150 photos developed at London Drugs It cost us in total $180.00. So in the end our total was $180.00 plus the $60.00 we lost to Box Paper Scissors, saving us almost $100.00 from the price she quoted originally for badly executed wedding announcements. I would say if you were to choose to enter into agreement with this business, be very cautious, get everything in writing and ensure that they have shown you exactly what they are going to produce or you will wind up in a difficult predicament. We should have demanded more from the owner but I guess in our quest to not appear demanding we got burned. Lesson learned. She kept saying how pleasant we were to deal without throughout the process which speaks volumes in my opinion as to why people may not normally be so pleasant with her, there is clearly an issue there with communication, something I am sure if she addresses may alleviate some of her troubles. -

I will not longer frequent this shop after an unfortunate encounter with the manager.
I enquired with the manager about ordering envelopes that they didn't have in stock. It would have been a $30 shipping fee and take one month for the order to arrive. I only needed 25 pieces and needed them quickly so said I would just find them at another shop or online. She let out a big "pffft" rolled her eyes and walked away!
Kensington is my neighbourhood and I'm a big supporter of shopping locally, but not at the expense of being disrespected or losing out on good customer service.
Very happy that I didn't use them to prepare my wedding invitations as I was considering their services. -

Good selection of coloured paper, journals, greeting cards and other card shop stuff like wrapping paper. It's just a tiny shop, but the employees always seem to be ready to help you find what you need.
Actually, we found they have a lot of different stuff that you wouldn't find at any of the bigger chain stores. That's a good thing. We need more variety, you don't want to give someone the same birthday card you gave them last year without realizing it. Good little shop with variety. -

Another stationery fix. Sometimes that's all I need, and Box Paper Scissors their gigantic selection of unique cards, odd little gifts and paper, scrapbooking supplies, etc. It's hardly cheap, but as long as my favored card is less than or equal to five bucks I'm alright.
I have literally spent hours perusing their greeting cards to find the right fit for the right occasion. Birthday cards, Thank You cards, Going Away cards, condolences... There is definitely a lot of variety, and it is always changing. The selection is heartwarming, funny and gender divided. I'm not sure why, but finding a Thank You card without flowers on it (so you can give it to a guy) seems near impossible at some of the larger chain stores. Not here.
They also have little gifts to give, so if you pulled an "oops I forgot" last minute rush, you can give your card AND something else. They have luggage tags, and those cute to-do post-its and wallets. Adorable. And if you are crafty, they have a little something something for the scrapbookers too. All in all a charming little shop.
