I have no upper body strength, whatsoever, so for those who have trouble pushing even doors, I would caution you to pump some iron a week before this tour.  Pay special attention to the part about "how not to flip" and "what to do if you do flip", because you guessed it, I WAS THAT PERSON.  After, realizing that I wasn't drowning (thank you, life jacket), the next trial was getting back into the kayak, in the middle of the ocean.  Uh yeah...it was quite tricky.  If you perhaps even think that you might be THAT PERSON before coming here, make sure you take a Yoga or Pilates class, because that would be helpful in this segment.  But for those who are sporty or accustomed to water sports...read on.

So, despite my muscle mass deficiency and the hours I spent fighting the waves, I did enjoy the scenery and animal life that makes BC so beautiful. There are stops along the way, so I would recommend bringing your own water bottle and snacks/food in baggies (to refuel your energy), a camera (bring a waterproof one, or BISK can provide you with a bag that is waterproof where you can store your camera).  In my case, and in my case, a bathing suit and a change of clothes would have been smart.

If I made it through this, so can you.  AND I still enjoyed it even though it was gruelling for me:  LIVE, LAUGH, and LEARN.

This is great little operation and a must do when over on Bowen Island. It is also a 2 for 1 in the Entertainment Book so you can save some cash. A bunch of my friends when out for 2 hour paddle. We fought the current the whole way, and eventually surrendered and didn't even have to paddle back. I am actually friends with 2 of the girls that work there, and of course they are cool.. aren't most kayakers?
I really want to do the a Full Moon kayak.. that's next on my hit list.

What a perfect way to spend the first day of fall, paddling around Bowen Island on a clear, calm, sunny day that felt like July.

We stepped off the water taxi in Snug Cove and walked fifty feet to Bowen Island Sea Kayaking's convenient location. A release form and $65 later we were paddling out to the northern tip of the island.

It's hard to review renting a kayak without mentioning the whole experience. Since Bowen Island Kayaking is the only kayak rental on the island, it seems fair to include such details. The paddle north takes you past lots of oceanfront dream homes, to the north you can see the Lions from a different angle and a perfect view of Black Tusk. At the entrance to Snug Cove, there are hundreds of purple starfish on the rocks surrounding the beacon. At the very north of the island there were lots of purple and orange jellyfish, and throughout our three hour paddle there were plenty of eagles and seals.

It's a much more inspiring paddle than say, Deep Cove.

As far as the rental location on it's own - the employees were laid back & helpful, and the equipment was in good condition. What more can you really ask for? They offer tours and classes. Tuesdays are 2 for 1 rentals.

As mentioned, this is the only kayak rental company on Bowen Island.  Conveniently located in Snug Cover where the ferry drops you off, it is hard to miss.  The staff was friendly and provided us with all the equipment needed to kayak safely around the area.  She also provided us with a recommended route since we didn't know the area.  A double kayak rents for $72 after taxes but includes the essentials of kayak, paddles, PFDs, spray skirts, pump, rope tow, and spare paddle.  A fun experience and a nice way to see the island and surrounding landscape at the same time as getting some exercise.  Would recommend but if you've never gone before perhaps do a class first so you can make the most out of this experience.

I was super impressed with BISK.  They were accommodating and informative right off the bat.  No problem booking me and 3 friends for a kayak lesson a few days in advance, they just required 50% down.  Once we got there I was equally happy.  Right off the ferry dock was their Caribbean style stand, samba music loosening us up before the lesson.  Karla was our instructor, and was smart to ask right off the top what the occasion was.  The plan would be to learn to sea kayak so I could explore more of the coastline on camping trips, finding spots that are only water-accessible.  Karla was sure to give us pointers on kayak camping throughout the day and during the full day lesson took us to explore a few different Bowen bays.  We easily learned new strokes and rollover rescues.  It was a gorgeous day and Bowen was a great place to be, with massive mountains on the far side and seals playing in the foreground.  I highly recommend this outfit and will be back for weekend rentals in the future.
