Part of me (the selfish part) wants to give this place a one star review. That way, none of you will prevent me from getting a table when I go next time. But the nice guy in me says to give them a rating they deserve, so here goes.
This is hands down the best Thai place in town.
I've been to others, including the well-known but shall remain nameless place on Whyte Avenue, but this one beats them all.
The Red and Yellow curry are to die for, as is the Pad Thai. The prices may seem high, but compared to its competitors (who are even more pricey) and the fact that everything is made fresh, I think the prices are fine.
This is one of those little stereotypical family restaurants that made it big - they recently moved from their former tiny location to a much larger place a couple blocks south. -

I was really hoping for amazing Thai. This was one place I had seen driving up 97st and popped in with a friend. I do appreciate the spices, and the fish (which I don't normally eat) was spiced in such a way I didn't know it was fish :)
The one big upset was that the carrots in my Gang-karee were obviously frozen. That alone really put me off from my meal. The sauce was also unappetizing. Aside from the karee, everything else was pretty darn good!
Especially the yaw-tawt...mmmm loved em! Lot of flavours. But I've still had much better Thai. Just not in Edmonton. Overall, A-ok. -

Damn you Boualouang. So spicy but so tastey.
Can't.
Stop.
My goodness. If you're looking for a crazy amazing Thai eatery. This is it. The Pad thai, the Red, green, or yellow curry anything are quite simply awesomesauce. Keep in mind nearly everything is spiced pretty well here so if you don't have the tongue for it - stand down. And If you haven't had their salads here, they're also a must-try.
The finishings are quite a bit higher end compared to their more humble days at their old location (a few blocks north of this one). And while this locale has a good dozen'ish tables, our group of 3 didn't find any problems getting a spot during the lunch hour rush.
Either way, the price point is competitive. The atmosphere is awesome. And the food is spicy and mind-blowingly flavorful enough that you'll want to make your best Leo impression and shout from a boat bow.
Definitely give this place a go. Nom nom nom. -

For sure the best Thai food in Edmonton that I have experienced. It's always really consistent and the service is good.
I am especially a fan of their curries and mama noodles but everything I have tried has been good.
The only drawback is they accept cash only and their ATM has a high service fee which is quite annoying as their prices aren't low to begin with- I never carry cash and always feel a little taken advantage of when it comes to paying the bill- but it's so good I keep coming back... -

Hands down, my favourite Thai restaurant in the city of Edmonton. The food here is amazing. At first glance, the menu has no vegetarian items, but they will substitute tofu for any meat, and more importantly, for the very strict vegetarians, they will make all dishes with no fish sauce upon request. All of their sauces are made fresh, so this is no problem for the good folks at Boualouang. The dishes that keep drawing me back to this place include: Gaeng-Kiew-Vahn curry (just make sure the Laotian eggplant is in season, truly makes the dish), Matsuman curry, Pad Kee Mouw (Drunken Noodles), and, of course, Pad Thai. Be sure to save room for dessert.
I advise you to make a reservation. It's a tiny place, and I have seen it fill up, even on a week night. Overall, I highly recommend this tiny gem of a Thai/Laotian restaurant in Edmonton's China Town.
Oh, this place does not accept credit cards so remember to bring cashListed in: Thai it. You'll like it.

Best Thai in Edmonton hands down!
Growing up in Seattle, I was exposed to lots of Asian foods - Thai included. When I moved to Edmonton 8 years ago, I was disappointed at how Americanized or Canadianized much of the Thai and Chinese food was here - so many deep fried dishes and hard to find authentic dishes.
Boualong changed that! Their dishes are authentic and full of flavor and life! They recently moved locations, further down 97th street, in the last few years doubling their restaurant size! They used to only have 8 tables... Now they have around 16! They didn't take reservations and I remember one time standing outside in the winter in the snow for 30 minutes waiting for one of their 8 tables!
The family that runs it is super nice and if you have a request that isn't on the menu, chances are they can make it for you!
The prices are a little high - though, I sincerely appreciate curry dishes automatically coming with a bowl of rice. There is something offensive about restaurants that charge $4-$5 for 50 cents worth of rice in addition to the price for the Curry dish. Who eats Curry without rice anyway?
Prices for most of the noodle dishes and curries ranged from $16-$18 and the appetizers were $10-$12.
Be forewarned: they ONLY accept cash. They have an ATM machine in the restaurant that you can get cash from. -

Most certainly NOT the best Thai in Edmonton. Passable food, reasonable location, prices a little too high for the quality though.
Don't get me wrong. If you're in a pinch fir Thai, then certainly give it a try, but move along, nothing to see here -
Review from Lauren N.
My friend suggested going to Boualong last night, as she raves this is the best Thai restaurant in town, and the only one she goes to. And my friend knows her food! We got there around 7pm, and all six tables were taken already. There was a waiting line in progress, and the waitress told us it was going to be a half hour wait. Seeing as we weren't starving yet, we decided to wait it out. The waiting game takes place in a long and narrow corridor at the back of the restaurant.
The restaurant is family-owned, and it's a very old and small building. But somehow the cracks in the walls and the cramped space adds to its charm. There are paintings, photographs, and wooden carvings hanging on the walls for decor. You feel like it's one of those delicious secrets only you know about, except it's one of Edmonton's most popular restaurants. The packed tables and the constant queue attest to that.
We didn't have to wait a full half hour for a table. There are two waitresses, and they both work together to serve all tables. I ordered the hot tea, as yesterday was our first day of snow I believe, and I was freezing! It took awhile for the tea to arrive, and I started to wonder if they had forgotten about it, but it came eventually. The food was brought out in a matter of no time, which was very impressive, as there is only a single cook in the kitchen.
We ordered the yum and matsamun curry to share between the three of us. The yum was exactly that -- yummy! It's basically glass noodles heaped with peanut sauce, cilantro and mint, carrots, shrimp and chicken. You can order it in different varieties as well.
The matsamun curry was very spicy, I was able to tell from the first bite. This is not mild curry they use here, so if you're not used to spicy foods, you might want to ask them which is more mild. I think I'm average when it comes to eating spicy, but I downed two glasses of water with my first helping of the matsamun that night. Despite that, it was delicious. It had chunks of chicken with lots of potatoes, and served with a dish of rice.
Our meal came out to be quite inexpensive, at $11 for each of us, including tip. I'll probably come here again, but now I know not to underestimate their curry. And to come before 6pm, so I can get an empty table.Listed in: Best Eats

Unlike Indian cuisine which is pretty mediocre in this city, we have some great Thai and Laos restaurants. Boualouang is one of those places - I've been here three times now and loved every experience. Once was during lunch when it was quiet, which meant that the food came out faster and was fantastic. I also went on a busy Saturday night and had to wait 40 minutes for a table (make a reservation!) but it was well worth the wait - the service was just as pleasant as during the quiet lunch period and the food quality was consistent. Tom Yum soup was good but not as good as at Syphay. My favourites are the drunk chicken and duck noodle dish (can't remember the exact name). I LOVE duck and their preparation of it was fantastic!

Best Laos and Thai food in Edmonton. In the 6 years living in Edmonton, this remained the all time favourite. Even after moving away, every year I never fail to return to order the usual favourites:
Tom Yum Goong with seafood
Pad thai
either the green or matsamun curry
Taro Pudding with ice cream.
The food has remained consistently good, even with a span of over a year between visits over the past 3 yrs. It used be a small 8 table restaurant that have expanded more than twice the size and it is still always busy. that is how good it is.

p/s: only problem is - food always takes a while to get to the tables; I see this as a good sign because it means everything is made to order. -

My mom had dropped into town and I figured I would takd her out for lunch... looking on yelp I found this place and it sounded pretty cheap for thai. Had a little trouble finding the new location on 105 right beside sai woo. We went in and the staff was friendly along with everything being beautifully decorated. But when I first looked at the menu everything was regular thai priced (12-18) so I was a little disappointed offering to pay for lunch when it was expensive. We ordered the Shrimp and Pineapple with sweet mayo spring rolls for an appetizer ($12) A Yellow Curry with Potatoes and Chicken ($15) and lastly Pad Thai with chicken ($15). First thing she brought out were two tiny spring rolls on one plate, and my face instantly dropped until she said "vegetable spring rolls ON THE HOUSE!" Nothing makes my day more then free food. They were delicious. I'm not huge on veggie spring rolls usually but these were great, they came with a sweet sauce with cucumber. carrots and peanuts in it. Then the Pad Thai arrived, not the appetizer but I didn't mind I was ready to dig in. I was amazed by the size of the Pad Thai because everytime I go for Thai in Edmonton it's a measly portion meant for a 5 year old. Decorated with lettuce and an orange we devoured half of it before the curry came out. The currys taste was a bit disappointing, not as flavorful as some of the curries I have tried before. You could also see an oil layer on top which was a bit of a turn off but it was still decently sized and came with a portion of rice. LASTLY, the spring rolls finally came. I wasn't a huge fan of the sweet mayo mixed with the pineapple. It was just too sweet and rich for my tastebuds. Service was great my water was never empty and the waitresses were extremely nice and friendly. Overall it was a great experience ($44) and I would definitely return because we had TONS of leftovers. Oh yeah and..CASH ONLY !!
Ps Sorry I don't know the actual names of the dishes they are way too weird to remember... I didn't write them down this time sorry ! -

I've read from all the reviews that this is the best Thai food in town. I had no idea it was the most expensive Thai food in town. I've been in here once before and the food was above average, but I find it still didn't warrant the prices they were charging. So today, I thought I'd give it another shot by ordering take-out. I had the Pad Thai with chicken and shrimp. They charged me $19 for that!!! I mean, the food is good but it's definitely not the best Thai food I've ever tasted... So I don't understand why they charge like they do. I understand having to pay a lot for steak or sashimi because of the price of meat or fish, but a few pieces of chicken and shrimp in a noodle dish is definitely not worth almost $20!!! Sorry, I'm not ever coming back to this place.

I kinda don't want to tell you about this place. I want to keep it a secret. But it is so good that it just wouldn't be right. A carnivore friend of mine recommended this place, but when I went with three other vegetarians we weren't sure if we were going to have anything to eat. There is little to no veg. friendly food on the menu, but the waitress told us that since they make every dish fresh they can make all of them vegetarian! That is pretty rare. We got four vegetarian entrees and they were all very different and really really good. Some were subtle and delicate and some were knock your socks off. The vegetables were really fresh and not frozen. The sauces were amazing. Go to this place for sure, but try to go on a night that I don't want to so that I can get in. Thanks.

Review from Paula K.
Boualong only has six tables and is one of the smallest restaurants in Chinatown -- and one of the most popular. The place gets filled up around meal times for good reason -- the food is excellent, fresh, and authentic. Boualong is known for a variety of Thai ahd Laotian dishes, many of which are noodle dishes such as the famous Pad Thai. Some of the food has quite a bit of kick to it, but many dishes can be made custom to taste.

I remember when this little jewel opened just south of 106th Ave. It had 6 tables and amazing homemade Thai food. Only the former has changed. It's new swank location is so nice. I actually feel happy for it because it was one of those little entrepreneur restaurants that deserved to thrive and it did.
The green curry is spicy heave, Tom Yum is so yummy and there's a Pad Ka Pow that I quite like. I've had lots on the menu and the only thing I wasn't impressed by was a salad (forget which one) because the dressing was too sweet. The soups, curries and all mains are awesome. The coconut rice must have drugs in it, too - good ones, too. Really good ones.
And this restaurant's name is actually Boualouang
