After visiting Italy in 2008, I was on a quest to find good gelato in Seattle. Thank God for Bottega Italiana! Their gelato was closest to the gelato I ate every day for 2 weeks in Italy. I had tried over 30 flavors by the time I got back to the U.S. and what's wonderful about Bottega Italiana is they change their flavors according to the seasons. I recommend trying them out in the summer so you can have the fabulouso cantaloupe and watermelon. Any time of the year, try the gianduia (hazelnut chocolate); the pistachio; or the nocciola (hazelnut). Really, all of the flavors are heavenly and they are pretty generous with their scoops. Try them all!

The Scoop on Gelato in Seattle...

Gelatiamo downtown used to be fantastic when they first opened in 1996. Oh, those were the good ol' days when the owner was there every day. The first time I had gelato was at Gelatiamo. It was a revelation for my taste buds! But, the last time I ate there in the mid-2000s, I actually found a large chunk of ice in one of their sorbetto flavors--so wrong! And their scooping has become very small and chintzy.

D'Ambrosio in Ballard has a serious lack of fruit sorbetto and they are too precious with their scooping. What up with that? I know the owner is from Italy. Gelatieres there know how to scoop AND they have tons of flavors (both gelato and sorbetto) to choose from so why not bring the same practices to your shop?

Last but not least, Fainting Goat in Wallingford just doesn't taste right. The gelato is too hard, too cold (gelato should be served at 10-15 degrees F higher than ice cream) and tastes more like ice cream with flavorings added, rather than gelato where the flavor is completely infused throughout.

    Bottega Italiana: Grazie! Mille Grazie!

I'm anxiously awaiting summer to make its full-on comeback this year so I can enjoy this tasty gelato every afternoon in Green Lake. Really, I will come here EVERY DAY, the gelato is that good. Forget the salted caramel and pick whatever fruit is in season - amazing. And double it up with the panna cotta - super amazing. Holy cow amazing.

Brioches, paninis and espressos have always been perfect. My fiance and I both lived in Italy during our undergrad years and going to Bottega Italiana indulges our nostalgia in the best possible way - the food and the espressos. They use Illy coffee and make everything in-house, including the gelato. We are certainly regulars and will continue to be so for a very long time.

Oh Bottega Italiana...how I miss you. The problem is that I love your gelato but you are never open anymore. The last THREE times I have tried to visit (including 7:30pm on a gorgeous spring night, tonight) you have been shut down.

The problem is that you don't have your hours anywhere online and it sucks to waste my time to drive down to see if you just might be open. Seriously..fix this crap. It's ridiculous in this day and age to NOT have updated hours on your Facebook or Yelp page.

    OMG. OMG. OMG.

The ONLY reason to go here is for the pear gelato. It. Is. Heaven. It's a foodgasm. It's the climax to end all climaxes. It's like nothing you've ever tasted before. It will rock you to your core.

They also have my other favorite flavor, plain yogurt, which is how you know this is the real deal gelato. Try the yogurt flavor mixed with any other flavor of your choice and you will not be sorry, but seriously do it with the pear. THE PEAR! Are you hearing me? Don't f*** this up.

My girlfriends wanted to get some gelato in Greenlake the other day, so I immediately thought of this place and the rave Yelp reviews I saw.

I loved the location just off of the main drag of Greenlake and this cafe is bright, clean and was a good place for us to hang out.  It isn't very big with 4 tables, but it wasn't too crowded, so I'd like to believe that despite the ratings, its still sort of a well-kept secret.

We went in and sampled a number of gelato flavors.  The staff was really nice about giving us samples. They don't have too many...maybe 15-20, but I was more than happy. I wanted everything! They had pistachio, salted caramel and chocolate, chocolate, vanilla, fruity sorbets such as lemon, peach, strawberry and way more I can't remember.  I like gelato much more than ice cream because of its creaminess factor and this did not disappoint.  I ended up getting pistachio and salted caramel and chocolate below that.  It is important to try/eat the salted caramel last because its the strongest.  The gelato was great, but next time I think I'm going to get sorbet or one scoop of gelato because it was a little too rich for me to eat so fast.

Re: the sizes: a small here is 2 scoops and $3.50 and a kids is 1 scoop and $2.50. For what it was, I would have to say, I thought it was a pretty good price!  This is cheaper and tastes much better than Ben and Jerry's down the way (plus its gelato not ice cream!)

I also definitely want to come try the $5 lunch specials sometime.

I think I may have a new post-Greenlake Park dessert joint!

.... I try to tell myself that that one lap around greenlake makes it okay for me to eat 2 scoops of their Gelato...

Seriously some of the best Gelato I've had in the Seattle area. The tartness of the lemon was just.. so perfect, and the diverse sweetness of the .. chocolate salted caramel was ...*Drool*

Its probably a good thing this place is not close to where I live....

I went in here for a coffee experience, too cold to try the gelato at the moment. The mocha tasted like drinking hershey's syrup straight out of the bottle. I asked him to maybe pour 1/2 of it out and fill it with drip, which he did instead of immediately remaking it. He was trying to be nice, but just not an excellent response. Thought I could stand it...but as the time ticked on, I was feeling bad. Spent a while there so I asked him to charge me something for my time there (I shoulda just got up and left immediately). I spent $2.5 on a drink I returned. I walked out the door feeling like, that's $ I need to buy my coffee, went back in and was waiting for him to finish with someone to ask for my money back, since I didn't drink what I spent more than a buck on...he was busy and I was feeling bad, so I just walked out again.

My sister was with me and didn't give her feedback, drank her crap mocha and we went a block away to 72nd st Cafe, where they make their own genache. Ah, that's what I was after.  I gave them 2 stars cuz their gelato looked good. If I had a better experience, I would have gotten gelato before I left. Instead I just needed to get out of there.

Love their gelato, hazelnut is my favorite (it's like eating ferraro rochers). We used to drive up to Vancouver to get our fix of hazelnut gelato, but Bottega Italiana's is definitely just as good. Best gelato in Seattle, IMO. space is open, selection is a little on the small side, but the quality and price is very good.

Ice cream isn't funny. I probably shouldn't be reviewing it. Whatever.

So I went to Bottega because I didn't have anywhere else to be and bowling started at 9. Got a 220 today. That was pretty cool. Maybe the gelato did it? But no, it probably didn't. I am that good, suckas. I hit a 6-7-10 split bowling with left handed spin between my legs. Can you do that? No you can't.

I also got a macchiato so that I could see what it was. It tasted like a shot of coffee with foam and no sugar or cream. That's also what it was. Coincidence? Absolutely.

According to their website, they have a flavor named Vaniglia, which sounds so pervy I probably would have ordered it had I seen it, but instead I got Gianduia, which sounds like what the guy who's overcompensating tells everyone he has when he's trying to get some Vaniglia.

    Gianduia was delicious.

And... I guess that's it. Hooray for ice cream!

The gelato is about the same as Fainting Goat, in my opinion.  I had the salted caramel and the coffee.  The coffee was good and strong, but the caramel just wasn't salty enough!  I would come again if I were in the area, but I don't find this place special.

I believe that the gelato at Bottega Italiana is still top-notch.

However, on three separate occasions, I have been confronted with a level of service at the Greenlake location which reminded me of trying to buy ice cream from the Taliban.  In an environment where unemployment is close to 10% and alternative dessert locations are proliferating, the owner of Bottega Italiana would be well advised to research whether the person she has closing up shop in Greenlake is really cut out for the customer service business.  As for me, I will no longer visit this location for my gelato (we really enjoyed Fainting Goat tonight), nor will I (as I have) recommend BI to my friends and family.

Nevertheless, in the spirit of seizing the opportunity to educate the rude lass who so effectively cost her employer return, loyal business, perhaps the following customer service flashcards (based on actual incidents that occurred in BI over the past year) might help:

ISSUE #1: A group of customers appear in your store despite the fact that it is your boyfriend's birthday and you want to close early.

(-) Incorrect solution: Rudely tell them that you need to close and ask them if they would sit outside (no please, no sorry).

(+) Correct solution: Tell your boyfriend to lay off the Viagra until your shift is over.

ISSUE #2: Your ice cream display case springs a leak and water pours out of the front of it on the floor.

(-) Incorrect solution: Become flustered and try to encourage the customers in your store (who have kids with them dying to have gelato) to leave.

(+) Correct solution: Remain calm and apologize TO THE CUSTOMER.  After the customer is taken care of, clean up.

ISSUE #3: A couple walk in and don't realize it is past your closing time, partly because there is a line of about 5 other people and partly because closing on a half-hour is just plain stupid.

(-) Incorrect solution: Announce that "it's not going to happen tonight" and tell the couple that - Duh -- you closed 15 minutes ago.  Then boot out the remaining customers in the location.  Finally, serve your friends and then allow one of the prematurely dispatched customers to overhear how delighted you are at being able to serve them.

(+) Correct solution: At closing time, politely excuse yourself temporarily from your existing customers and lock the door, the internationally recognized signal for "I am closed".

    LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!

Its tiny and practically hidden within an apartment complex, but inside awaits a beautiful dream of exotically whipped Gelato flavors!
Each unique flavor is handmade in the back and they make it look so heavenly and light in the display unit.

They also serve up an amazing cup of coffee. Forgo the busy Starbucks and grab a creamy frothy illy latte made by a very nice looking Italian baristo-fella. Needless to know, but I left the place feeling full of happy endorphins.

Bottega also offers up "Happy Hour" specials throughout the day. 1/2 off your lattee if you come by late at night or get a crispy panera sandwich for half from 12-2pm! Sweet deal!

+1's for also being open so early at 7

    I am in love.
I am in love with pear gelato.
My Nephew has been telling me for months to try this place. Well, mostly because he would benefit by me buying him a 4-scoop serving but you can't really blame him since I am such a fabulous Auntie. We headed down on a walk to Greenlake, got our scoops and I instantly regretted getting only one scoop of pear. Not that the second scoop of coffee gelato was bad - it was delicious - but.....the pear. Oh, the pear. Deliciously creamy and tasted exactly, and I mean exactly like a pear.  I have seriously never, ever tasted a dessert so delectable. Ever.
Pear gelato, I love you - and if I could, I would marry you.

I like that the small size is made up of two scoops. I'm sure it's more than I'm supposed to be eating, but who doesn't want to try two flavors of gelato? Plus, I had my daughter get a kid's size scoop so I had some of hers as well. She had the vanilla, which she said was delicious (she says that of all ice cream/yogurt/gelato though). I couldn't really taste it after having tasted my salted caramel. Salted caramel was a very strong flavor, but not in a bad way. I also had the hazelnut chocolate, but I couldn't taste the hazelnut. I'll have to go back and try more flavors. It was pretty delicious!

I wish that they had more seating. It was enough for the time we were there, but we went at 4pm on a winter Sunday. I also wish they did some recycling and/or composting there. Sad to see their pretty plastic bowls go in the trash.

Ice cream in the winter, NO WAY... Gelato in the winter, ANYTIME, especially from Bottega Italiana!!!

Cute little place in the Greenlake neighborhood.

This place would be good to go for morning coffee by Illy, lunch or a quick small dinner, but especially for their oh so amazing handmade Gelato.   OH YEAH BABY!!!

Had a half Parma Panini (Parma ham, mozzarella & arugula), half a salad (Sofisticata that had walnuts, pear and goat cheese) and some Gelato.  All pretty darn good and definitely hit the spot!!!

Even though it was pretty slow when I entered, only one other couple in the place eating, it was definitely a great place to stop by for a quick something to eat.

Service was good and very patient with my indecisiveness.

Yup, the gelato here is spectacular. There were so many interesting flavors to choose from, and it's all displayed so appealingly, with little bits of garnishes that match the flavors in case you don't speak Italian. I had the Tiramisu, which I ordered through a series of grunts and gestures because I don't know how to pronounce it.

Something about the little scalloped-edge dish and tiny little spoon just makes gelato extra fun to eat, don't you think?

I'm impressed! ... If you know me, you know I tried almost every flavor before ordering.

I ended up with the salted carmel and the tiramisu in my cup. I really liked the flavors. They were very flavorful and not too sugary. The texture was spot on too. It is very common to get melty gelato right away.

Every flavor is really good here. Right on point flavor wise.

The cool thing about this place in particular is that they serve other things, like: coffee, food, other goodies/snacks! Unfortunately I got to this joint a little later on, and none of those other things were available for sale!

The atmosphere is super cool. The most you could hope for. Modern with a classic italian twist. Go there, and you will see what I mean.

Now... for the 5th star. This may seem nit-picky, but a big deal to ME! My friend and I arrived at about 8:45pm on a Friday night. Of course, I wanted to sit down with some coffee, some gelato and relax. BUT they were about to close. They close at 9pm on Friday... what? It's a Friday! Sooo... we had to sit in the car and eat our gelato and be awkwardly stared at by the people who noticed us eating Gelato in the car.

Lost sales... at least 4 other couples came up to the door as we were eating!

Sorry the gripe session, but I was a tad bit unhappy about it, if you can't tell.

I LOVE this place though, and might find myself at the downtown one because they are open later!

Okay it's official Ice Cream, we are over.  Hello velvety and sensuous Gelato!  Mmmm, in Tiramisu you make my heart sing. Oh Baby, this is what lust feels like in all it's glory.

Serving Illy coffee and ridiculously tasty desserts Bottega Italiana can consider me a close friend after one visit.  The service was great, friendly with an undertone of good natured snark.  My 8oz capp was delish and hit me perfectly on the caffeine spot.

I will be making the trip here from Magnolia as often as possible.  And will be adding an extra five miles on my bike ride afterward so I don't turn into a tubbo.

Heaven in a (corn-based, biodegradable) cup! Bottega's gelato is amazing!

I am by no means a fan of sweet treats, but when I moved to the area and discovered the abundance of gelato joints in town, I had to give it a try. I've tried a few of the higher-rated gelato locations in town, but none compare to the quality that Bottega provides.

My favorites: coconut, coffee, and pear. But all of their flavors are quite amazing.  They often have obscure flavors such as hibiscus too.  I'd also recommend trying the espresso and gelato combination, where they pour delicious espresso over two scoops of your favorite gelato. We tried their "illy" latte today and that was also pretty tasty.

My boyfriend and I live only 2 blocks away, so we're fairly frequent patrons to Bottega. Despite this, the staff isn't especially warm or friendly, but, I'm A-OK with that as long as they keep serving all the deliciousness that is Bottega Italiana :)

If you frequent this place, I'd recommend holding on to  your gelato cups and mini gelato shovels for the next time you visit, in an effort to minimize waste.

Also, when you visit, be sure to mention that you'd love to see an avocado flavored gelato featured at Bottega. If anyone has every tried an avocado smoothie, you'd understand the desire to consume a creamy cup of avocado gelato :)

    Enjoy!

Thanks to my love's love of gelato, we ventured to this hidden jewel that is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Greenlake..and I'm so glad he found it because I just couldn't believe I had ignored this little gem all these years!  G'bye Baskin Robbins and holla at Bottega Italiana!

This place was cute and quaint and I liked immediately.  The friendly lady behind the counter was so patient as he and I decided on our flavors and she obliged in giving us as many free samples as we wanted.  They advertise no preservatives, no additives, and all natural ingredients which made me deliriously happy and disappointed that I had settled with BR all of these years for our frozen treats.  I love that they boast no use of nasty high fructose corn syrup (JUST SAY NO to that junk!).  And, the way they delicately display all of their flavors is beautiful.

The tiramisu was simply heaven!  You should also try the coconut which was amazing, as was the strawberry, rasberry, and lemon flavors.  Everything I tasted was so good I probably would have asked for a scoop in every flavor if I could.

I guarantee I will become a regular at this place and coming here will be as routine as my visits to Greenlake itself :).

A slice of Italy in Seattle.. I shared a pear and pistachio and was not left wanting. The heavenly sweetness of the pear was balanced by the nutty smoothness of pistachio. For $3.50 you get two generous scoops ("kid's" size=1 scoop=2.50). The gelato shop is also in a great locale, because you can stroll the lake or go sit in the grass and admire the action at the park while devouring your treat.

I live very close to Florera (the condo complex in which this fine gelato establishment is ...established).  I used to be able to see the lake out my bathroom window, now I see a sunlight-obliterating brick wall.

However, months of bulldozing, jackhammering, and unintelligible catcalls are finally paying off.

Pear gelato?  It's made of PEARS??  Yes, it is.  And it tastes like pears.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!!  For a limited time... or possibly all the time, I'm not sure.. you get one of those tiny fun little spoons and a darling plastic flower-shaped cup you can take home and reuse for future frozen adventures.

Their pear gelato was really good...each bite was bursting with ripe pear flavor!  The location is perfect, right next to Greenlake...so it's a nice place to stop after walking around Greenlake on a warm day.  And for the summer, it's open later on certain days (I think it was Fri and Sat) until 10:30pm.  my friend really liked their watermelon gelato too.

In the interest of being fair,  I've noticed that the counter people are much happier and smiley in the last couple of months.  Maybe they got a raise? Whatever, it's a much better experience.  I should also note that Dave Matthews and his kids were there the last time I was in - and he could up his smiley a little too.  Just sayin'.

I ordered Hazelnut Gelato. In general, I like hazelnut gelato and Nutella (until I found out about partially hydrogenated oil!) but I don't like hazelnut flavored creamer. I know, weird. For short, I don't have any complaints about the taste.

Anyways, compared to Gelatiamo? Gelatiamo is better I think because my Gelato at Gelatiamo is served in a frozen grail-like cup ha! But taste wise, gelato is gelato to me.

Only 4 starts because the place feels like claustrophobic.

To my surprise, I'm not the first one to review this place. I thought it was one of those hidden and underrated Seattle gems that went ignored to the mindless eye.

All well. I LOVE THIS PLACE. And I'm somewhat jealous that I'm the first one to think so. It's very small and you're best just grabbing a few scoops to-go and walking around Pike Place. The prices are fair. The lady who works there is a sour, sour woman -- but the quality of the gelato makes up for it!

I've been to Italy and I've had my fair share of gelato at probably over a hundred gelato shacks, and this is the only place I've been to in America that even comes close to the real thing. If you are looking for authentic stuff. GO OUT OF YOUR WAY TO COME HERE. ...while you're at it ... avoid Gelatiamo down the street.

I found Bottega Italiana just a couple of weeks ago when my husband and I were walking around Green Lake. Something about this place said "come in...come in...." So after we finished walking, as a reward to ourselves, we stopped by. And oh man, am I glad that we did!
I tried Tiramisu and Caramel. My husband had Coffee gelato. They were really good. I also like the decor inside the store.

So we took our friend there a few days ago when she was visiting us from out of town. She got Pear. Like, O-M-G, the pear gelato is SOOO GOOD!!! I know I tend to like "what the other person is eating" better, but this was seriously good. Possibly better than eating a real pear. I kept stealing a bite from her going "MMMMMM!!!!" She was so happy she got the flavor. I think it's popular because they sold out the batch before anything else (which made my friend sad to see it be gone before her eyes, but they had another batch in the back).

Next time I go there, I am getting my own Pear gelato.

Whoa!! This is actually the most late night coffee place near my house, and it's near the yoga studio, so it's good to stop by before hand for some study. It's not the greatest place for study though, since the space is a bit small. It is trendy though! I was really shocked when a friend told me she wanted to meet me there, not knowing where I lived, and then I found out it was so close! It's kind of a hidden gem.

They make a big deal about having vegan gelato, but it's just sorbet. That's not to say it's not good though - it's great! I can't remember getting a coffee here, since I always get some gelato, but I did get the affogato which probably wasn't a good idea with that kind of gelato, but it was interesting. The baristas seem friendly but sometimes they are all hidden in the back room because certain times of day aren't that busy.

The sandwiches aren't very vegan friendly and I've never tried to get them to make one otherwise...

I guess I'm giving a star off because it's a very small place, they're not open as late as they were in the summer, and I was harassed by a creepy guy once when I was studying there :(

Yum! My friend described the tubs of gelato as a mountain range of heaping waves of gelato. This place is great, can't really go wrong with any flavor.  Two thumbs up for pear. A friend got disaronno, which had a smooth almond-based flavor.

Great accompaniment to a sunny walk around Greenlake. :)

This place is tucked away off the main drag, and were it not that I live in the 'hood and was exploring today, I might have missed it. Having only recently been turned on to gelato, I am definitely a fan, and this joint is pretty darned good. Incredible presentation under the glass equally presents when crossing my taste buds. I highly recommend the chocolate. There was only one person at the counter when I arrived, and about four people waiting to be helped. Still, very quick service, even when she had to run into the back to make up a sandwich for an earlier customer. And we all gladly waited... because it's worth it. Decent pricing for a great product. Recommended.

One of my best memories in the Green Lake area was here. Two of my best friends and I were hanging out one final time before two of us headed back east to go back to school. We were just meandering about looking for something to do when I decided to look on Yelp. Well, you guys suggested this place and we went.

I did watermelon and wow. It was amazing. My friends were raving about theirs as well. At first, they were making fun of me for whipping out my phone and yelping, but after we finished, boy were they silent then!
