YUM! Pretty sure that these guys invented the world's first teleportation device and secretly use it to transport back and forth to Philly from a secret door in their kitchen. It's THAT authentic. Simple menu. AMAZING taste.
Personally, I go for the cheesesteak hoagie in an attempt to take the "healthier" route with a few veggies thrown into the mix and cheese wiz always being a great source of... protein. Right?
Other than that... the bread is phenomenal. I am currently having a love affair with the Italian hoagie (def my favorite on the East Side) and the fries are crisp and always warm.
The only sadness from this place is that they are not open on Sunday. -

Alright, I've been to Philly and visited Pat's and Gino's - Bokay?
Let me tell you something, this place is better. How a Korean guy and his son got the idea and nerve to set up this place in Hipsterlake, I'll never know.
The sandwiches are big and hit the spot. Order the cheesesteak with Wiz - it smells like Philly.
One point off for canned mushrooms in the mushroom steak - bland and didn't add anything to the sandwich. -
Review from Ben V.
A truly solid cheesesteak. It is simply delicious with the bread, steak and cheese melting perfectly well together. It was so big though, that I realized the fries were just overkill!
It's a 5 star review if you order to-go but the dining room (and restroom) is really mediocre, hence the four star review. The guys behind the counter seemed a little more interested in each other than the customers, but that happens when a team is having fun I guess.
I'll definitely have to come back -- but next time no fries and to-go. -

Pizza steak was alright, but for the price I paid I feel like I should have gotten double. I'm sure their other menu items are better, but this place is definitely not a $ in value, more of a $$

I LOVE this place! Am usually a healthy eater but if something is good, it's good. I could taste the quality of their ingredients and saw the love they pour into that place. Andrew is simply awesome. What a caring, lovable, and authentic atmosphere!
The bread was great and I really liked the chicken mushroom. I'm glad many people gave it so many stars. ;)) They truly deserve it and are from Philly - hence they know what they're doing. I uploaded some pics of the place since nobody has done it yet. It's a "fast food" place so the interior is simple, but it was really clean and is located in the hippest area in Silverlake. Stop by if you can.-
BEST Philly cheesesteak in LA!! -
Review from Alex S.
Boo's - a restaurant's name has never fit so well.
I kid, I kid. This place is fine. Nothing special, just fine.
I went with low expectations after being denied from Black Hogg by the exuberant wait time. A friend of mine, from Philly, liked this place and thought it would suit our party of five better. He was right, no wait, fast food. Done.
I ordered a cheesteak with wiz and onions (wiz + wit - but they don't go by that lingo here) and some cheese fries.
It was fine, nothing special. Nothing life changing. I did got to Pat's in Philly the last time I was there but I'm not comparing this to an authentic Philly cheesesteak (If i were, the South Philly Experience truck would be the victor), nay, I'm comparing this to other cheesteaks in general. Growing up in LA with an excited desire to try as many foods as possible, I've had many cheesteaks in my life (out of Philly) and this one wasn't the most exciting. The wiz was incomparable - not much can be said about it. The onions were fine, nothing too memorable. It's the bread and the beef that were flawed in my book. The beef just didn't have a nice crisp char to the outside. It was mainly chewy and dull. The bread didn't really have much of a taste to it. It was mainly support for the other characters on this stage of snackdom.
The fires and cheese were fine but nothing I really needed.
I think the most disappointing factor was the price: $7.96 for something that tasted no better than a $6.50 cheesteak. Sure it's only a $1.50 different but it's also a near 30% difference in price. If my cheesteak costs 30% better than another local cheesteak it better be 30% better than that other cheesteak, especially if they only serve said cheesteak ingredients in bulk and should potentially be lowering their overhead and thus their costs. You can correct me if my math is off but you can't say these cheesteaks are worth it. -

Having spent key years of my callow youth in the Philadelphia environs I had ample opportunity to sample the gastronomic delights at both Pat's and Jim's Steaks on South Street. While both have their devotees, I find that despite the rather attractive name, Pat's steaks are a bit greasier than I like.
Imagine my delight to discover an authentic Philly steak within a mile of my home. Imagine my delight to find that the owner is also partial to Jim's steaks, and has gone to great pains to faithfully reproduce them.
Yes, they are subject to West Coast errors like offering provolone or other cheeses - but they also offer Whiz, so they can be forgiven. The Amoroso rolls are proper and the steak is perfect. Top it off with a butterscotch krimpet Tastykake™ and the only thing that could make it better would be a black cherry wishniak to wash it down.
Mushroom steak, whiz on it. mmmmmmmm. -

Good for you? Absolutely not. "Good" as in tasty? You bet!
A "real" Philly cheesesteak's tastiness should be inversely proportional to its nutritional qualities. No whole grain breads, no "real" cheeses, and absolutely no lettuce, tomato, etc.
Instead, a Philly should be grilled sliced beef with melted Cheez Whiz on a roll (such as the very appropriate Amorosos that they have at Boo's). Each delicious bite should have you thinking about your overall lifestyle and if your system can handle it.
While you're at it, go all the way with a side of fries (with Whiz) and a Coke to wash it down. Save room for a butterscotch TastyCake and then go home to sleep it all off. That's how you do a Philly! -

This place reminds me of Jake's Steaks in San Francisco (minus the beer), and that's a good thing. Straightforward, non-pretentious service by dudes who just wanna make cheese steaks. I love it.
They also feature a variety of cheeses, including cheese whiz, for you to choose while also featuring a variety of hot sauces, spicy peppers, and salt n' pepp to dress up your hoagie.
This place is a little gem, but you wouldn't know it since it's on a busy street corner that isn't the prettiest. They also have outdoor seating, but it can get a bit noisy.
In any case, go here! These guys are cool and their sandwiches are delish. -

My fiancee is mad at this place. Not because it's not good, it's for the exact opposite reason. It's TOO good. He's upset because he wants to eat it everyday and he can't. He's upset because after he finishes his cheesesteak he wants another one right after. He's upset because it's so close to our house that it's basically taunting him everyday.
It's really yummy, really fast and they have these great marinated peppers that I've somehow never seen or tried. -

I am soooooo happy that this place opened up! I'm not from Philadelphia, nor have I ever been there, so I cannot count myself an aficionado on the subject, but Boo's Philly Cheesesteaks ARE THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD!!
The bread is to die for - they have it shipped straight from the motherland itself! The meat is always tasty, and the fries are always crispy! (seriously though, what kind of batter do they use? I get it to go and by the time I get home and ready to eat them 10-15 minutes later - yeah the traffic on Fountain can be that bad - they're still hot and crispy!!
Seriously, if you haven't tried this place yet you need to. The owners and staff are super friendly, and I hope this place sticks around for a loooooong time!
I just wish cheesesteaks were healthier for you - then I could justify coming here more often! Right now, I settle for once a week....
I know what I'm having for dinner tonight!! -

For over a year, I've been searching for an authentic Philly cheesesteak in LA. By "authentic," I don't mean prime rib and artisanal cheese blended in a whole wheat wrap. My craving is for Whiz, grilled onions and steak that clings to your lips with each bite. That's what they serve at Boo's, so get yourself some.
I've seen Boo's listed at http://Seamless.com, but apparently I'm outside of the delivery area. I live only a mile from the restaurant, so I hope they expand their service area soon. If I could order their cheesesteaks from the comfort of home, Boo's would definitely become a staple of my diet! -

So, the story is my grandfather knew Pat's of the famous Pat's Steaks in South Philly. They would play cards together. Pat was terrible at cards so the other guys sent him into the back to make something to eat...and hence, cheesesteaks.
Pop-Pop is gone now so I can't really verify the story. But it is a sign that I'm an old school Philadelphia Italian who takes cheesesteaks seriously. (Whiz is not real - the cheesesteak predates the creation of Whiz. But it is meltier. De gustibus non disputandum est.)
And much to my delight, Boo's sandwiches are totally up to snuff - good bread, good meat, good cheese, grilled onions. And TASTYKAKES to boot! I'm so happy to have found a genuine cheesesteak joint that tastes like home - is my neighborhood - and is priced right.
With TASTYKAKES! Sorry, I can't resist the Kandykakes.
I had my favorite - a pizza steak (cheesesteak + gravy - that's "tomato sauce" to the rest of you) with grilled onions. I basically inhaled it. Juicy and tasty! Can't wait to try more.
As an added bonus, the family that runs the restaurant is friendly and lovely. And there are TV's with the sports on.
For the record, although I am a Pat's loyalist (suck it Geno's!) I actually think the best cheesesteaks come from local joints - like this one. -

Honestly one of the best Phillis I've had in a long time & for a new place they have pretty legitimate phillies.
One thing that was so pleasant was Te price we got 2 phillies with drink & they werent all that big it cost us close to 23$.
It's worth a shot though.
Overall a cool spot. -

True, I never ate Philly cheesesteaks in Philly, but I sure grew up eating a ton of them in Boston. What this means is: I know my subs (and often lament the inability to find good ones outside of New England), I just happen to like my cheesesteaks with regular cheese and not whiz.
Anyway, long story short, this place absolutely makes the cut. I just read about it recently and I made a bee-line for lunch. I can't believe that not only is there a good sub shop, but it's so close to my house. This is definitely whatever the food equivalent is for a sight for sore eyes. So happy. Must go! -
Review from KC O.
Sunset Beach, CA
Such a large boner KC grew when he saw a 4 and a half star cheesesteak shop! So many great reviews and the place actually has the whiz! KC was hyped.
For you LA types, Boo's might work. But KC lived on Newkirk and Tasker in S. Philly so Boo and his boys aren't pullin' a fast one on KC. He hates to let the air outta the tires of a man's business but when the man is beating his chest and representing KC's city in the wrong way, KC has to step in.
1.) While they DO supposedly have whiz, they did NOT have it today. KC was forced to actually put fucking provolone on his steak which is just not how it's done, son. You lose two stars right now for that disservice. For those of you rookies and pretenders that put that roast pork cheese on your steak, look at the photos.
2.) Chopped steak is cool but you can't be overcooking a man's steak. Damn!
3.) It's pricey. KC recalls it was like $9.00 for a mushroom cheesesteak which is about what you'd pay in Philly. The menu board insinuates that onions are $0.95 extra which is lame. But KC thinks it's just extra dough for extra onions. KC would drop ten bucks if the steak was unbelievable but it ain't.
Sorry Boo. KC lost his #pimpgame over your cheesesteak and walked outta there with #limpgame.Listed in: Why KC Isn't Elite...inspired…

Been driving by this spot quite a few times and thanks to my friend, I finally went to eat here. The Cheesesteaks are out of this world. The bread is super tasty (I am very picky with my bread) and juicy. The meat was cut very thin and it was of high quality. The owners are super nice and round up the whole experience. Will be going back there for sure. I am not a fan of Cheez Whiz and I was delighted to have the option of a variety of cheeses. That is the only substitution to my Philly :)) Love that place...

Los Angeles, CA
Admittedly, i stumbled upon this place while looking for Ricky's Fish Tacos (which the owners totally called me out on, haha). I had also just finished running miles upon miles at Silver Lake, so I wasn't particularly in the mood for a philly cheesesteak (aka carbs /red meat/cheese with a side of deep fried potatoes).
But boy were the bf and I glad that we stumbled upon here. The owners were super friendly and the few customers that were in there struck up conversations with them and seemed like regulars. I like that kinda neighborhood feel.
I think the price is decent (for the portion!), and it was a darn good sandwich. I'm no philly cheesesteak connaisseur, and I don't plan on becoming one, but it was big, hot, chessy, meaty, with yummy toppings and the bread was good. IF I were a fan of philly cheesesteaks, or a man, I would be back.
Rickys Fish Tacos fail, Boo's win. -

Yeah. It's good. Really good. And so are the guys running it.
The rolls are from Philly, so soft and chewy and makes the perfect vehicle for the delicious beef, onion, and cheese (they offer Whiz!). They could find a roll that's similar and cheaper, but they just know it's best. Cheers to not compromising!
Oh, and they have wifi and hot peppers... I'll be back. For sure. -

I'm going to go ballistic with all these people claiming that Philly natives are only about the whiz. As someone who lived all over in Philly for 13 years (in the Art Museum area, Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square Park area), lived on Jim's for several meals a week for a solid year or two while an ex-beau lived on Bainbridge, let me tell you that provolone is legit. It was the cheese originally used on a cheesesteak. (The sandwich preceded the Whiz by a decade or two.) And Boo's does a great job melting that provolone into the steak. it's superbly yummy. It'll be worth your 1000 calories. Rant over!

All I can say is on Monday night they where out of Wiz so I could not enjoy what is said to be the "Best Philly Cheesesteak in L.A." I tried the Philly with Provalone it tasted like a Geno's Philly... Lacking the flavor that comes with the Wiz...
But hey maybe next time I roll back in the area I can walk in and hope they have some Wiz for a Cheesesteak..
So until next time all I can give is a 3 Star which I think is fair considering its a Monday and they ran out of product.. -

HUGE CHEESESTEAK AHH!!
That was my first thought when I was given my mushroom cheesesteak. Oozy gooey provolone in every bite. Soft, well marinated beef. Chewy and soft bread. Decent mushrooms. Great tasting pizza fries. Boo's may be one of my mainstays in Los Angeles. I have tried real Philly Cheesesteaks and while Boo's doesn't measure up to real cheesesteaks, I have to say that they are probably the best I've ever had out of Philly.
They have a few choices, and I am interested in trying them all. You can add extra meat, cheese, or mushrooms for an extra charge as well. I guess one of the knocks to these Philies would be the the lack of bell peppers. Really?? The bread and the meat definitely helped cover some of the lack of veggies up, but other than that it was a great cheesesteak.
I am Korean, and this place is Korean owned and operated. I can not tell you how proud I am that there are Koreans that are taking a risk with opening a non-conventional (for Koreans) restaurant that has me wanting to finish the second half of my cheesesteak as I type this (the cheesesteak was that BIG).
One of the best parts of this place is the service. They are extremely nice and I don't think it's because I was Korean. Or was it? While me and my friend grubbed down, the old Korean chef gazed at us, as if checking to see if other Korean's approved of his lovingly made food.
I approve sir. I approve, but get them bell peppers on them quick PLEASE. -

I don't eat cheesesteaks too much anymore but when I do it's usually when am out in a part of town where I'm getting auto-stuff done which means not close to home.
Nuffin' goes with auto-stuff like cheeeeeesssesteak.
Go figure who woulda guousned motor oil woulda gelled with whiz.
But this ain't in some far off place. It's on the way home from work. They offer all the usual Philly suspects: whiz, mushrooms, provolone, chicken cheesesteak, cheesesteak hoagies, etc... They didn't have green peppers but I don't ever think I ever had green peppers on a cheesesteak.
I'm gonna hold back on the stars and see what they do with this place. I'm hoping they add some specials... Spicy Pork Bulgi Cheesesteak anyone? -
Review from Bill P.
Los Angeles, CA
So I kept looking at the online menu and kept waiting and waiting because I wanted to try their Pizza Cheesesteak sandwich. They offered the sandwich but it wasn't available. That's just unfair and unkind. It was the itch that hadn't been scratched so finally I decided to call them and ask. And yes, they had it in! So I immediately drove over and said, "one pizza cheesesteak please"...because i think that's how true Philladelphians ask for it, right? Regardless, 10 minutes, out comes this nice soft bun filled with shaved beef with a bit of that colored grease that spells comfort food and a nice layer of marinara sauce on top sprinkled with melted mozzarella cheese. The ratio was was perfect! My expectations were high but the cheesesteak crushed whatever doubts I had.
The cozy diner has posters or banners of teams from Philly. They really need a photo or poster of Kobe Bryant. I might just bring them one so I can tack on an extra star. -

This is not good...
Well this place is good, actually it's great! But in no way it is good for me because I'm training for a marathon. Having such a place tempting me after a long run and body craving for huge amounts of food afterwards, this is the place I really have to avoid.
Ah screw it, anytime I come over I'm just going to declare it a cheat day. Hopefully I run enough during the week to balance out the hefty meals I'll be having here.
The rolls used for my cheesesteak was so tasty and soft. The key ingredient to a sandwich is the choice of bread and this place has it down. My meat was on point as well. Not dry at all like some Philly cheesesteak places.
Would I be back?
You bet yo ass

so being that i was obsessed with philly cheesesteaks from giannas (i was vegetarian) and would eat till i couldn't walk every time i was in Philly on tour, i would say that i'm pretty ecstatic that i found some place similar in my neighborhood. My newly minted meat-eating self is outright losing my mind! They have been open for a few weeks, which is insane considering it felt like yesterday the sign went up.
Regardless, they use the same bread as the ones in philly so how can i even complain! they have wiz (that puddle of wiz at the bottom of your wrapper...hello, that right there is love) so that's another win. oh yea and tastykakes. holy shit where am i? definitely not silverlake. the cheesesteak with wiz. easy enough. tasty enough! only 8 bucks. quality is there too and it's a large portion. and with sriracha, i was in heaven.
their fries are tasty too.
they only have a few parking spots but parking on the street usually isn't a problem. -

Grab a bite of East Coast right here!
I savor my memories of scarfing down cheesesteaks while visiting Philly growing up.
It's been a while since I've been to the city of brotherly love, but Boo's transported me right back. Amoroso bread is soft and they don't skimp on the meat either. It's juicy and my Provolone melted JUST RIGHT on it. Spoke to the owners who are cool people and YES FROM PHILLY. If things go well for Boo's in the future, they have some awesome plans for the menu and the ambiance. Dreaming big- here's best of luck to them. -
Review from Shane K.
Los Angeles, CA
Hey! Way to go - honestly, I have a thing about checking out Cheesesteak places in the Hollywood/East Side because I haven't found one I'm in love with yet; I like those places with the crusty bread and the melty cheese and the quality meat and the sauteed peppers and onions and the guys at the counter with the Philly accent who pronounce "what's going on" as "what's gay-oh-in oo-un." This place didn't have any of that either, BUT -- BUT -- the sandwich was really good.
I got the chicken cheesesteak with onions and (because they didn't have peppers yet, which is odd) I pulled peppers out of a jar on the counter with pepper-tongs. Whatever, they were decent. Anyway, the bread wasn't that crusty, but it was delicious -- chewy with some texture on the outside. The meat was abundant, juicy and full of flavor. Meat was the highlight for sure. But the HIGHLIGHT was the melty provolone (that's what I got, you can choose what cheese you like, but that's what I recommend). The onions were nice.
Franklin got the steak cheesesteak - his looked really good. He said it was really good. We didn't trade halves, so I can't say for sure. He didn't offer and I didn't want to make it weird, so... anyhow, I'll get that one next time. And there will be a next time, even though the parking was problematic (only three spots in the lot). We sat outside, where they have 5-6 picnic tables with umbrellas (and about 8 tables inside).
Service was a 10. Go check it out - possibly better to pickup rather than eat there. But I don't know your life. -
Review from Nick S.

I don't mean to call out other reviewers, but as someone who has devoted much time and energy (and functioning ventricles) to seeking out good, "authentic" Cheesesteaks across the country, I feel it's my duty to point out misinformation before it spreads too far. And I swear at the end I'll let you know how "authentic" Boo's is.
Robin P... you speak as though you're some sort of expert or authority on "real" Philly cheesesteaks (which are served at Pat's or Geno's in Philly) yet you a) have never heard of Whiz, which is THE defining element of a cheesesteak and b) order mushrooms on the sandwich. "Real" Philly Cheesesteaks are Meat and Whiz with optional onions depending on your plans for later (and if those plans involve a person emitting the smell of grilled onions from every pore for hours.) Any deviation from that takes it out of the realm of "authentic" Philly Cheesesteak. I'm not saying that a steak sandwich covered in grilled mushrooms and provolone cheese can't be delicious, it's just not technically an authentic Philly Cheesesteak.
OK, now that that's out of my system, here's a brief review of Boo's: Not bad. They asked me if I wanted salt and pepper on my sandwich which is the first time I've ever been asked if I preferred seasoned meat to unseasoned meat in a restaurant, but hey, nothing wrong with having a choice I guess. I got mine with Whiz and onions aka "Whiz-Wit" and it's pretty much on par with every second-tier Philly Cheesesteak I've eaten around the country. Not the sheer artistry of Geno's, but pretty damned good.
Lest that might sound like a back-handed compliment: Boo's 'second tier' Cheesesteak is better than any other Cheesesteak I've sampled in Los Angeles thus far. The problem with Cheesesteaks around LA is that people have tried to turn the culinary celebration of gluttony and mind-bogglingly unhealthy foodstuffs that IS a Philly Cheesesteak into something palatable for health-conscious Angelenos prone to complain about vague things "freshness" and something out of a can "lacking flavor." Boo's embraces the Cheesesteaks' greasy, smelly roots and swings for the fences. While they haven't hit a home run quite yet, at least they're not trying to pass off a neutered version of the original. And that's why, even though I can't get behind how they express it, I do agree with their claim of being "Da Realest In So Cal." (shudders) -

Been waiting a while for this place to open and I finally got a chance to try it today. I've had Philly's Best (the Glendale location, before they closed down) and they similarly use Amorosa bread, which is supposedly THE bread to go with. Unfortunately, I did take out because I was expecting a plumber at home. So, after the plumber left, I finally got to eat my Boos... I was expecting a soggy mess, but instead, I find a delicious, still hot cheesesteak!
What stood out to me was that the meat was very good quality - no stringy-ness at all. I also felt the portion of meat was very generous, too... Now, since they are newly opened, they don't yet have cheese wiz and their options are still somewhat limited. Having said that, the sandwich and the service truly warrant 5 Stars!
Hopefully Booz remains another gem in Silver Lake! -

As soon as I spied the renovation happening for Boo's, I started stalking the place, waiting for the opening. I've been there twice in their first week! I'm from Philadelphia and I've been hoping someone would offer some authentic cheesesteaks in the area. Boo's does a very good job of bringing you a genuine Philly style steak, with sauteed onions, Amoroso bread, the right meat, and the option of american or provolone cheese. I was there pre-grand opening, so they were still getting their oven going to complete the menu with the much needed pizza steak. Then they the can ask "sauce and onions with that?" just like back home! They even have tasty cakes...however I didn't spot any butterscotch krimpets.
The place could still use a little love on the ambiance. And maybe a few side dishes...perogies, perhaps? That would be authentic philly. But, I give the food 5 stars, as well as the friendly service. A welcome addition to the neighborhood that satisfies a food lover's need. -

Always on the search for a good Philly Cheesesteak sandwich, now I discovered Boo's. Driving to this location was hell since its in the ghetto of Hollywood yet it was worth it. I asked for half n half to to see which cheese I would like better, with provolone & cheese whiz. Both were great and my favorite was the cheese whiz. Had this with a side order of fries which were nice & crispy. The bread was cooked perfect and I would definitely try this place again, when in Hollywood, see photo too.

When I first drove by this I thought "Oh another weird restaurant in a weird area". I'm not fond of many places south of Sunset in this area. They're all fricken weird and not that good. Well this place pleasantly surprised me.
Never been to Philly. My oafish friends from Philly have filled me in what makes a good Philly Cheesesteak. Steak-um meat, wit Wiz, and on a Amorosa Roll! BOOS had all those components. When I dug into this sandwich I loved it. The simplicity of just roll, wiz, salt & pepper, perfectly cook meat, and sauteed onions made me tummy happy. I threw some of those sweet peppers on it as well which made an amazing sandwich fricken AWESOME. I also got some WISE chips and the white frosted TASTYKAKES. The name TASTYKAKES is exactly what they are. Now it's a lil on the pricey side. They're not price gauging though, their initial cost for all the imported Philly products must be a lil more. Im a cheap bastard as well. Anything over $5 is expensive for me. With that said it was well worth the price. I really enjoyed the whole experience.
A close friend of mine is from Philly. As I was finishing he just happened to text me. So I told him I'm bringing him a Philly cheesesteak. He was sitting on the stoop. He was extremely impressed. He told me that was pretty damn close. The only thing missing was the grease soaked brown paper bag. So it's an improved Philly Cheesesteak. Cleaner and less messy. Im going back to that weird neighborhood to get another awesome sandwich.
