Every small town needs a bookstore like this PG gem. Books & Company has stayed in my heart even though I no longer live in B.C. It was the place I went to unwind, catch up on my reading, have a quick, healthy meal, do some writing or take some time to meet up with friends. In fact, you usually run into half a dozen people at the bookstore you already know. It's just that size of town. What makes B&C special? It's quaint, beautifully decorated, inside is a cafe - Cafe Voltaire, where the food is all homemade: fresh soups, sandwiches, cookies and these tiny lemon tarts that were devilishly good. There's often inpromptu live music on Friday nights, local musicians jamming and the place fills with guests, young and old. Books & Company is also the arts hub of the city, with bulletin boards and posting for every arts event happening in the area. Upstairs is an art gallery and theatre company's headquarters, a clothing shop with artsy apparel and Artspace, where concerts are often held. I saw Britain's Martyn Joseph perform there and we were no more than 30. I saw him in Edmonton a couple of years later performing for a sold-out audience at the Arden Theatre in St. Albert. If you're coming to PG, don't forget to stop for a lemon tart and check out the board for arts events during your stay. And say hi to Jim Brinkman, the owner, for me. It's been too long.
