Review from Eric L.
I wish there were more book stores of this size. The problem with the big chains is that it is so huge that you are overwhelmed with selection. This place seems to be the right size. The Danforth location is small, however it is well layed out and the staff does a good job of brining exciting and fresh selections to the forefront. The prices are on par with most other stores.

Was visiting Toronto and decided to buy some gifts for my friend's sons here. The store looked welcoming and well-stocked.
The guy at the counter was super nice. He gave suggestions and shared what his little girl liked to read/look at. I am sure the girl has one nice daddy. -

This store just seems to be really getting it together lately. The staff are so knowledgeable. Plus(!) they carry a lot of the McSweeney's published books, which are sometimes difficult to find unless you buy them online.

Toronto, ON
Great little shop to browse in on a cold winters night. The staff are amiable and knowledgable. The selection of magazines is fantastic - all the hip journals and foreign cooking magazines I could ever need. They have bestsellers on sale now, which is nice because sometimes 40% off a hardcover is just the push I need to go to the big box store instead of the little guy. Nice bookstore, good selection.

There is a major lack of excellent (not pretentious) bookstores in Toronto. Chapters and Indigo are not among them.
I absolutely adore Book City at Bloor West. They have a huge assortment of titles and categories that are actually in logical order.
My favourite part would be the staff. They truly set this book haven apart from others with a simple two-word idea; customer service. Such a simple concept, yet surprisingly hard to grasp. -

This is one of the smaller Book City outlets around Toronto, but they still manage to pack a surprising amount of good books and magazines into their limited space. It has more of a bibliophilic staff and atmosphere than the big chains, since books are their only business.
They've got a better loyalty card deal than Chapters/Indigo, and if you sign up they even send you a $5 gift certificate on your birthday. Book City also has good deals on remainders (something which also used to be true of Chapters, but not as much lately). -

What makes this a five-star book store? The staff.
The Annex location probably explains the incredible staff, but I've never been able to stump them. If they don't have what I'm looking for (which they've had to pick out from an occasionally babbly description of what I think the book I'm thinking about might be about), they'll help me try to source it.
Love the staff.
Love the crazy remainders (which tend to arrive in themes, so you can put together great themed gift packages without having to think too hard). -

book city is essentially, at quick glance, a more palatable version of big kahunas like indigo with a used bookstore feel. its very organized and easy to navigate the aisle ways, unlike many used book stores (and like indigos) and yet theres something very basic about it (white and yellow colour scheme-long hallways of books to the ceiling and no circus tricks around) like the used shops and unlike the indigos.
they will have all the newest books and thorough sections of major topics. If you like magazines they have a decent selection of popular mags, but no specialized 10 dollar ones. if you want to order special books they can and will find them for you.
i feel like at one point in the history of the city, book city was the indie book chain, before chapters/indigo came around, but really there are a number of used and non used bookstores around the city, not hidden away that are more unique and filled with character than these ones.
overall, at one point in the history of th
