The best Gluten Free pizza ever! Even my non GF family loved it. And the salads are 5 star as well. Try the arugula and fig salad - wow.
The atmosphere is classic Berkeley with large screen TVs showing various ball games and, I am told, an interesting offering of beers.
The staff is knowledgable, fun and friendly. -

Nearly gave this four stars, but the last few slices of pizza haven't really been good, and the beer selection is getting odd.
That said, if you're looking for a pint and a slice of a lunchtime, it's a good place to try. Service is quick and professional, and the pizza isn't bad usually - the sausage and mushroom is a favourite. The bar seating is small and appears to feature a lot of long-term regulars who never seem to move, but are friendly. Good beer prices at happy hour. Popped in again yesterday and the place looks up to snuff. -

I've enjoyed their vegan pizza on numerous occasions... and very happy they also offer it by the slice! They use a house-made tofu ricotta style vegan cheese. Friendly, quick service.
I found out two more delightful facts about Bobby G's -- 1) they have a fried pizza and yes, it's vegan and yes, it was very yummy. I shared it with friends but if I exercised regularly, I'd indulge in one all by myself!
2) I had their red pepper pesto pizza and it was delicious. My favorite of the three combo's that day (one was mushrooms and another was mixed veggies)
Will definitely return.1 Previous Review: Show all »

There really isn't anything special about this restaurant, especially when Arinell's is right up the block. It reminds me of Gypsy's equivalent of Pizza. The workers are nice, there's a TV going with games, they serve beer but the pizza is simply meh. Just nothing special about it. I think if you're looking for a sports bar, this might be your place but pizza/food-wise, look elsewhere.

Went to get a vegan pizza, good flavor but it was pricey and the toppings were quite sparse. We have had better.

Tasty pizza and excellent beer selection on tap. Best choice for pizza in the downtown area. Quick service, clean place. Can be very loud and packed during televised sports events, they have a few screens showing different games.

We went on account of the Chronicle's article from some yrs back. My husband is from the East Coast and is constantly looking for good, thin crust pizza. We had the sausage and mushrooms. Although the flavors were excellent, the crust was soggy, and you couldn't lift the slice off the plate without all the toppings sliding off. That's a pizza sin.

Their caesar salad was simple, crisp and fresh. The homemade croutons were very good and it was the perfect amount of dressing. Tried a half paradise/half sausage and mushroom. One of the better NY pizzas I've had. The crust is thin and thick. Has a nice char on it. The toppings were the perfect amount, not too skimpy or overbearing. Want to try the pan fried pizza next time. The one winner though is the homemade focaccia which you need to ask for. If they use that for the panini's, I'm getting that next time. Perfect spot for a dinner party or to catch a game. Nice and modern and a good amount of solid quality HDTVs.

I am giving it one star due to REALLY POOR customer service. We have eaten here every couple, three months over the last yr, until today. I ordered 2 large pizzas for take out asking that both not have goat cheese on it. Goat cheese to us is like cryptonite to superman...Brought the pizzas home and there was goat cheese on one.Inedible to us and will just go in the garbage. :( I called to tell them the order was incorrect. The guy who answered the phone, Steve, was very nice. He offered to make another one right away for pick up, but my toddler was sleeping as is why I needed food to go in the first place and the sitter left when I got home. So no way I can go back out. I explained this and Steve said he would explain to the manager and call me right back. He did, said the manager said that if I didn't want to come back tonight, then all he would do is give me a 10$ coupon for the next time but I would have to go pick it up. K...but I just spent nearly $55.00 on 2 pizzas, one of which was not made right, and your only offering 10$ YOU screwed up! So I asked if they could at least drop the coupon in the mail, Steve didn't think it would happen. I give steve 5 stars. The pizza here isn't THAT great where I am willing to tolerate poor customer service. I know the cheeseboard, emily's, gioia pizza would better appreciate my money. So long Bobby gs.

We came here because someone in our party has a gluten allergy and I just want to say she loved her pie. I was less than impressed with the pizza (Again, I am a profound pizza snob) although it was edible. My gnocchi was sort of pasty and dry. The green salad was pretty delish. Good beer and nice atmosphere, but nothing exciting. Don't need to make the rounds twice.

Bobby G, I heart thee..because your pizza pie, puts a twinkle in my eye!
No, really, it does. I was craving pizza and this place looked like it knew how to make a good pie. I stopped in, liked what I saw on their menu, and ordered a large margherita pizza with two other friends.
Prepared quickly, covered with fresh ingredients, we devoured this pizza. Not being that hungry to begin with, jut wanted a piece and bring the left overs home, we surprised ourselves by inhaling this massive pizza within minutes. It was just THAT delicious!
The staff was very friendly, the restaurant and its restrooms were very clean, the seating was comfortable, and I will most definitely return. I also noticed they have free WiFi within and a great selection of drinks on tap. Pretty awesome if you need to do some work, want to grab some scrumptious food, or even a drink. I'm interested in coming back again to try other varieties of their pizza!Listed in: East Bay Bites, East Bay Bars, High On Pizza Pie

We finally tried Bobby G's and I'm not sure what took us so long! We decided to just go with the Vegetarian specialty pizza vegan style with their house made soy cheese which was like a ricotta. The pizza was a beauty and was covered with nice fresh veggies, olives, and herbs. It was very tasty and and we really liked the crust. We will be back for sure to try some more pizza combos as well as the vegan Caesar salad! Thanks Bobby G's for providing options for us vegans!

No... this pizza didn't do much to satisfy my cravings. Too saucy, bland cheese, soggy crust, and pricey. The place itself is spacious with a good vibe and good for watching sports. (I don't give a rats ass about sports though). Their menu is extensive so its possible the other items are good but I don't think ill go back.

My advice is not to ask for slices to go. I stopped in to get a slice of cheese pizza and waited at the counter for it. I checked in a few times about it, and twenty minutes later, I was still sliceless. I had somewhere to be, so I finally had to ask for my money back. The cashier said no, it would probably just be a few more minutes. What? Oh boy, I don't think so! I could have walked all the way to Blondie's on Telegraph and got a slice faster.
They also charge $3.50 a slice for anything other than cheese. This surprised me since Cheeseboard sells knock-out gourmet slices for $2.50. -

This review really is long overdue. I love Bobby G's. The first time I went there it had been open for 3 days. Since then I have had plenty of wonderfully delicious meals. It is always solid NY style pizza.
Things I enjoy the most:
Margherita Pizza
Cheese pizza
Goat cheese and avocado crustini is delicious!
PB & J panini is warm and nicely toasted.
The pizza isnt super greasy, which is great. The crust is thin and flaky and the slices are really generous.
They have a large variety of sauces and chilis available to customize your pizza even more.
They have a bar (which is still fairly new I think) with a bunch of different beers on tap and plenty of TV's to watch sports.
They also have couches to sit and hang with friends while you enjoy said beer or pizza or both!
They have a fairly good lunch special, which I've had plenty of times.
Bobby G's also has a student discount! Go Cal!
I haven't ever had anything bad here. The place is always clean, the people are always friendly, and my food is always delivered hot and fast.
Overall I can't say I have ever had any complaints! It is my default pizza place when I am in Berkeley! -

So far I've only known Bobby G's Pizzeria for their happy hour and their cheese slices.
I can't say anything more than that, really. At $2.50 it's a steal though! It's a pretty good slice of cheese pizza and doesn't coat your lips with grease. The crust is nice, thin, and fresh, and it's a generous portion too.
Bobby G's has yet to impress me though... seems like a nice place to kick it and share a pitcher of beer. -

Free WiFi, great beer options, good paninis. If you are in the mood for some good beer in the East Bay on a lazy weekend, Bobby G's is an excellent choice. Beers on tap as of yesterday: Death & Taxes, Pliny the Elder, Deutches Mirror Pond, Eel River IPA, Trumer Pils, and about 6 others. Check out their website to see the current beers on tap.
If you are not a local (or into the Berkeley vibe), expect to feel a little out of place. If it weren't for the beer, there are plenty of other options. -

Okay, I"ll admit it, I ignored this place for a good year after one experience. I needed coffee and in fit of desperation I turned to the closest place that looked like they would serve me: Bobby G's. Sadly, they committed the cardinal sin of making iced coffee by pouring hot coffee over ice. A) that dilutes my coffee to the weakest sludge possible and B) all the ice melts so it doesn't even get that cold. Stupid move on my part going to a pizza place for coffee, but I was in need!
Anyhow, I was walking by the other day and noticed they have trivia wednesday nights. Having always wanted to give it a try, I dragged my boyfriend along with me. We get there and the place is absolutely packed. Luckily a table opened up for us, but it was smooshed in the corner and I had to squeeze myself between two tables the whole night to turn in the score card. Get there early to have a better pick of tables is my advice. The questions were hard and needless to say we embarrassed ourselves a bit, but it was still lots of fun to me.
The food was really tasty. Between the two of us, we had a caprese sandwich, a goat cheese crostini app, a pan fried pizza with garlic, and a root beer float. I loved the goat cheese crostini best, but everything was really good.
Bobby G's hasn't seen the last of me. Just give me some time to brush up on my trivia skills, please. -

If you are a Berkeley tourist, you've probably never heard of this place. The locals, however, have and come here regularly for a good reason.
When I was at the doorway of Bobby G's, the smell of pizza and pasta dishes greeted me and tickled my fancy. The crowd is a mixture of college students, locals, and people who want to dine after work. The restaurant was pleasantly decorated with bright yellow and orange painted walls with Christmas lights surrounding the large windows, which overlook University Ave. There are two televisions on the east and west sides of the building with one on the north end, all showing sports games.
When I was ordering, I told the server that I wanted a slice of cheese pizza and a dark beer. He recommended that I get the Auburn Alehouse, Shanghai Stout. He mentioned that is was creamy like a Guinness but had a smoky flavor to it. When I got it he was right, it was so great, better than Guinness. When I got the cheese slice of pizza, it was also better than expected. It had a mixture of various cheeses, the crust was chewy, yet crunchy, and the sauce was flavorful. It was so good I ordered another.
This place is great. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, it has great décor, and the food and beverages are fantastic. Bobby G's, you definitely have a regular. -
Review from Karen S.
3 days into work & the boyfriend was ready for a break. But to be honest, if I were in the same situation, I would've cracked after 2 days. As a little treat, we decided to go to Bobby G's for some beer, pizza, & a good 'ol time.
He got himself a pitcher of Pliney the Elder which he drank 90% of by himself (5% was left in the pitcher & 5% was in me). It was $2 off during happy hour so I guess the left over beer wasn't too much of a waste. For food, we got an order of Spicy chicken wings & a large Triple mushroom pizza. The wings were very spicy but they paired well with the blue cheese ranch dressing. For what they were, I didn't think they were worth the price or the wait (it took at least 5 minutes longer than the pizza which already took a long time). The pizza was slightly too acidic but the use of goat cheese was very clever. Also, the mushrooms could have been sliced thicker to provide a bigger contrast of textures.
While the food was pretty good the prices were ridiculous. The wings & pizza together were almost $40 - & that's after a 10% student discount. Bobby G's is a place I've liked going for the last 2 years I've lived in Berkeley, but there are other places where one could get pizza & beer for much more reasonable prices...& at comparable qualities. -

New York style thin crusts and delectable toppings are what make this Pizza joint a winner. I tried their New York style with extra mushrooms and extra mozzarella and it was better than it sounds (if that's even possible). We went 4 minutes before they closed and got the speediest service ever.
Need to make more trips down to Berkeley. -

Came here to watch sports. This is a great casual place to go get a pizza and some drinks and watch some sports. They have a great menu, good food, and decent prices. Their arugula salad with goat cheese, figs and pumpkin seeds is AH-mazing!
When you enter the restaurant, you order at the counter, pay there and then they bring the food out to your table.
The crowd is very friendly and it is kid friendly. The only downside? Paid street parking. Would definitely come back here again though. -

ATMOSPHERE
Bobby G's is a great place to hang out with your friends.
I love coming here for the ambiance: very laid back and feels like a local treasure. There are a few flat screen TVs that always have either have ESPN SportsCenter or CNN playing. Sometimes there's live music and it's always open late. I appreciate that it doesn't feel like a chain and you can tell it's a mom and pop shop.
The workers are very friendly, but service is very slow. They take forever to bring your food out.
FOOD
1. Stuffed breadsticks
2. Fried pizza
3. Sausage and mushroom pizza
The reason this place only gets 4 stars is because the quality of their PIZZA is unpredictable. Sometimes it's really good (crispy and flavorful), but sometimes it's really bad (undercooked). It's really the luck of the draw.
I keep coming back to Bobby G's for the STUFFED BREADSTICKS. They are a huge carb overload, but they're SO good. They're stuffed with mozzarella and come with marinara dipping sauce. It's definitely enough to fill you up for the entire meal, but I recommend sharing it with a friend because they're only good when they're hot!
Overall, i enjoy coming to Bobby G's, but I wouldn't make a special trip out here because their food isn't amazing, but I would come back for the atmosphere and their HAPPY HOUR! -
Review from Jonathan T.
San Diego, CA
Thin crust pizza and frothy beers--not an exceptional principle by any means, but, when done right, it's one of the most spiritually intimate experiences a man can have with his food. And this place does the aforementioned formula true justice.
No need for more disclaimers...let's start with the good stuff: the crust here is amazing. Crunchy on the outside, vaguely tacky on the inside...it bites back, but only just. Some might prefer a slightly softer crust overall, a la Emilia's, but I'm a fan. The mozzarella is sweet and velvety, and the sauce is certainly tart (stronger than the delicate ones often associated with New York-style finesse), which blends nicely with the cheese selection, I think.
Many of their specialty pizzas are solid-in particular, the clam, arugula and cheese, paradise pie, and triple mushroom (though others, such as the blt, leave me wondering what the hell they were thinking), but nothing beats the perfumed simplicity of a margherita, or, if you like yours on the garlicy side, pizza Bianca. With no toppings but a dusting of herbs to mask the flavor, you get to really, I dunno, feel up your pizza, in the best way possible. Wash it down with a local, delicious, on-tap beer, of which there are many, and call it a day. Their Sicilian and pan fried pizzas are also sexy, but not, in my opinion, their forte.
For the quality of the pizza, I personally find the $ 20-25 price tag for NY-style pizzas high but not unreasonable. Some others I've talked to disagree...in particular my assortment of stingy roommates. However, their reservations seem to hold less weight when forced though sauce stained lips edged shamelessly with saliva.
As for non-pie fare, you have a choice of fairly pedestrian paninis and pastas (though, I'll admit, the lemon arugula penne is well executed and a personal favorite) and other small appetizers, but let's be honest, who the hell goes to a place called Bobby G's Pizzeria for chili con carne (which they have, by the way)? Freakin no one. Just order a pizza.
The company here is always abundant and varied, particularly during Wednesday trivia nights, something all self-respecting too-hip-for -their-own-good Berkeleyan establishments should have. I especially love the grad students with empty beer mugs and labwork stacked high, always ragged. Together with the comfortably discrete live jazz, they paint a dismally beautiful picture. Add in wicker furniture and a staff of well-spoken, friendly dudes that obviously love their pizza, and you have probably the best damn pizzeria in Berkeley (yeah, I'm lookin at 'chu Gioia).
In conclusion--great pizzas assuming your order the right thing, great beer, great environment, moderately high prices, and forgettable appetizers and dishes. -

San Francisco, CA
If possible, I would probably move into Bobby G's Pizzeria. It's easily the closest I've come to true New York pizza since moving to California.
The crust is super thin, crispier than most places, and the cheese has exactly the right amount of greasy goodness. It's beautiful. It's amazing. It's almost like being home again. The sauce-to-cheese ratio is spot-on, too. The vegan pies are really nice too, if you're looking for something a little less typical - good veggie options at good prices.
Also, you can't beat their happy hour prices. A plain cheese slice for $2.25 until 7? Sign me up.
If only I lived in Berkeley and not San Francisco. -

Berkeley, CA
I walked in a few months ago and saw a sign that read "Best Restaurant in Berkeley in 2009". I guffaw-ed -- I mean, really this place. Then I started going there to watch basketball (I'm a big fan). You know what, the food is really good. The people who are there, are there every day. It's kinda like the local joint from your small town that you miss. But everyone feels like that, whether they're from the Bay Area or the East Coast -- it just attracts good peeps. People greet each other, try to win pub trivia, laugh at each other -- and eat some solid food. I agree sports is the big pull for me, but this place does family style better than any other place in Berkeley.
Best Restaurant -- for the value? -- could be. -

Yay to local business!
Yay to homework pizza dates! My pizza comes with creamy cheese, fried garlic, sundried tomatoes, jalapenos and black olives and what's on yours?
Yay to awesome music :)
Yay to a sparkly pleasant smelling bathroom.
Did I forget the smiles, the TV screens, the funky decor and plenty of seating :) -

We tried this place out for a vegan pizza, since they promote that they offer vegan options.
The ambience is nice for drinking beer. Good Beers on tap.
Stay away from the vegan pizza. The soy cheese looks like a liquid that was squeezed out of a bottle. It tasted worse than it looked.
Soy cheese can be really bad. The owners obviously don't eat it or they'd know. -

Food:
I got the 1 New York slice with caramelized onions replacing the cheese. The pizza was was nice a crispy. The sweetness of the caramelized onion matched the light, refreshing, sweet, and tomato-y marinara sauce (house-made!) perfectly. The size was huge. 1 slice was bigger than my face!
A friend and I also shared the stuffed bread sticks. Best.Things.Ever. Bread sticks stuffed with house-made fresh mozzarella cheese, fresh herbs, and aged Parmesan cheese. The cheese isn't all just concentrated in the middle, it is actually rolled into the dough in the middle section. The bread is fragrant and chewy. I wished they bottled this fragrance so I could spray it all over my body, car, and room. This is a must try. Get it.
Tip: You can get toppings in your stuff bread sticks too! The server recommended artichoke hearts. (I know what I'm going to get next)
Bread sticks take longer to make, but they are worth the wait!
Service:
Spectacular. The server made sure to remind me of my 10% student discount. Made great recommendations. Gave me extra marinara sauce for my take-out. Over-all really friendly and attentive. -
Review from Casey S.
Bobby G's is, as my Yelp rating above states, just "A-OK."
The price is decent, the pizza is good, and the service is about average. Other than the awesome row of hot sauces near the counter, it's nothing revolutionary.
It's like your favorite hoodie; not your best piece of clothing, but definitely a comfortable thing you always seem to come back to. -

Delicious pizza and beer in a great bright space
There were so many things I enjoyed about this place. First, it is nice and bright inside. The atmosphere is very relaxed and you have the option to eat at a table or on comfortable seats which are perfect for conversation.
They have an incredible amount of fresh toppings with meat eaters and vegans accounted for. My friend had the vegan pizza with the vegan cheese. I tried some and was quite impressed. I had the veggie pizza with real cheese and was blown away with the sauce and crust. The crust was light and crispy.
The beer selection was great with a lot of interesting options. They also have some nice sodas including my favorite ginger beer.
The clientele was diverse and welcoming. There were some people at the bar who were quick to start up conversations with a person who is waiting for a friend to arrive. it was fun. There were also a lot of people who appeared to be studying. -

3.5 stars! Came of a Friday afternoon for happy hour with some friends and had a great time! They had a wide selection of beers and lots of different food items. Our group got a couple pizzas (2.25 with 0.50 each topping) and the crostinis. The pizza was good, thin crispy crust and generous with their toppings.
Overall it was a great place to hang out, lots of TV's all around the place playing the baseball game. Service was not bad either. Again, nice place to hang out and a good place to take the family! -

Oakland, CA
No I did not enjoy this place. The attitude of the cashier was really gross. He tried to up sell me on buying a whole pizza when I asked for a single slice, who does that.
He then forgot to put in my order, so it took 30 minutes for a single slice of pizza to come out and somehow it was cold? The pizza resembled a slice where someone had ordered "a slice of cheese with bell peppers and extra olive oil please. Make that double olive oil actually, thanks". No, I didn't order extra olive oil, gees.
I usually try not to write a negative review after one visit to an establishment, but this just sucked. No no no no no. -
Review from Tiffany O.
Carson, CA
Just your average pizza/sandwich joint.
Atmosphere: They have wicker chairs, which I think is pretty cool. It's spacious and clean
Food: I've tried their Margherita and Triple Mushroom signature pizzas, and they were both enjoyable (I happen to love mushrooms, and they provide a good amount of it on their pizzas). I've also tried the chicken pesto panini, which has a good pesto flavoring to it. The food is good, but it's nothing spectacular. The desserts are just average as well - the chocolate lava cake is probably you're best bet; I don't see how any restaurant for that matter can ruin a dessert like that.
Service: The guy at the counter the last time I went was really friendly. Service is usually quick and reliable. In terms of price, it is a little above average (nearly $10 for a panini).
Overall, in the words of Yelp, it was A-OK. -

Pizzas are really big and all the ingredients taste really fresh. I love going here on a Sunday afternoon for a slice and a beer to watch a game. Oh, ya... great local beers on tap too.
They have cool live music and trivia nights.
Overall, a real fun place. -

Disclaimer: I haven't had the pizza here.
Once upon a time, I did grab their arugula/pancetta penne: lots and lots of pancetta, but overcooked pasta (way past al dente). Maybe a bit too greasy, mediocre on balance.
The real reason I come here is the draught Pliny. Friendly bartenders and a decent (daily!) happy hour make Bobby G's a worthy stop in the UC campus area. -
Review from Bill H.
Music, good pesto pizza, and a great tap? Yes, please! You can definitely bring a group here and have a satisfying experience, especially as an alternative to the Cheeseboard wait-and-sit-in-the-median experience on Shattuck.
The pizza is good, but not great. As I mentioned above, the pesto pizza was the far and away favorite, but is still a little greasy.
Live music is always a plus, even though the experience is definitely more fun that good.
I will definitely be back with friends, or on a (very) casual dinner date. -

A very nice pizza spot
I was reluctant when my friends brought me here, but its very good tasting pizza, and reasonably priced.
It has a couple nice TVs and some good beer. If my friend still lived in the area, I'm sure I would go back more often. -

Oakland, CA
I brought my boys here for pizza and pasta, the kids pasta order is ridiculously small and over priced. One of my nine year olds could easily have eaten four orders and each order costs over $6! The pizza is incredibly greasy with a minimal amount of cheese. La Vals or other fun Berkeley Italian restaurants are definitely higher quality and better tasting. Don't come here unless you want a beer on tap and a plasma tv.
