I've never been to Thailand, so I can't tell you where to find "the most authentic Thai in Vancouver," but I really enjoy eating Thai food (probably my fave ethnic cuisine for more years than I can easily remember), so I can definitely report on what I liked and how it tasted ...
I have a thing about homemade fermented Thai sausage, ever since I first tried it a couple of years ago at Maenam, and fell in love with the luscious tropical spices and tender un-greasy consistency. I was delighted that Bob Likes Thai Food had it the night I ate there (not always on the menu - ask, or call ahead if you really want to try it). It was delicious!! It seems to be generally served as an appetizer, so a small portion, but I am debating ordering two next time ... Spicy-hot, and piping-hot, not greasy or heavy, but delectably chewy and tender at the same time.
I also really enjoyed the green papaya salad (I was doing appies tapas-style!) - crisp, tart, sweet, spicy, vinegary and actually a great accompaniment to the sausage. Next time, I'll even try a main dish!
P.S. in spite of the name, this restaurant is owned & operated by Thai people - they just wanted a funky and memorable name - and it is! It's meant to communicate that so many people like Thai cuisine, even "Bob"Listed in: My "Main" Squeeze

Bob Likes Thai Food & I Like Bob's Thai Food.
Having never been to Bob's place I can't comment on his taste in decor, the atmosphere, or service levels. A friend was kind enough to pick up some take-out today after several of us ended up running a little late (*ahem* 2hrs*ahem*) for lunch.
We had the Tom Yum Soup, Green Chicken Curry, Red Duck Curry, Pad Thai, Green Papaya Salad, and some minced meat stir-fry dish. My favorites were the Tom Yum & Green Curry...both had a nice amount of heat and very good balance of flavors. I would've liked the red curry more had it been a tad more spicy, but I think that was just my friend playing it safe. Pad Thai was the only miss of the meal, I found it rather bland.
Overall, the food is good. If I'm in the neighborhood I'd definitely consider eating at Bob's again (I mean it IS facing some tough competition from Au Petit up the road). I don't think it's good enough to warrant a special trip out though. -

We tried Bob Likes Thai Food because the name sounded kinda cool. It's a bit of a different Thai experience without the Thai artifacts and art that you would find in some of the other Thai restaurnts. The place is small but bright and quite modern. The menu is fittingly also quite simple with limited choices. Having been to Thailand I would compare this to one of their local eateries where you get good Thai food in a plain simple setting.
For two people we shared a papaya salad, tom yum koon, green curry chicken, and an order of pad thai. The dishes were pretty small for the price and I was a still a bit hungry after my meal. But I do have to say that the quality and preparation were good.
Service was good, the waitress who was not Thai had a good understanding of the food and preparations. -

I was craving for Thai food on Sat noon, therefore, I searched in Yelp for a good Thai food on Main or Cambie Street.
We ordered something fr lunch menu and found the foods were quite disappointing.
Tom Yum Kung Soup - It was so watery and light taste.
Green curry with chicken - the portion was so tiny and the curry wasn't good.
Pad Thai - It was ok.
Overall, the interior decor and menu is too simple and not impress at all. -

After deciding to go to Bob Likes Thai Food and then changing my mind multiple times, I finally had supper there. Initially I was discouraged by the prices - higher than usual Thai food prices, and the place is much nicer than most of the places I go (I have low Thai standards, I guess), so I expected to be disappointed for the price I was paying.
Boy, was I wrong. Yes, the portion sizes are smaller than most Thai restaurants, but the food quality is much, much higher. Little did I know - it is actually possible to do a GREAT job at stir-fried vegetables in sauce!
I ate the Swimming Rama when I was there - greens in peanut sauce - and found it delicious and flavourful. My companion had a meat dish which he was quite pleased with. Next time I will sample my usual standby, eggplant with basil, and see how they measure up.
Had very pleasant, if not expert, service. -

Bob may like Thai food but whether he can cook it well is open for debate.
I liked the rather minimal airy feeling of the place and did not have a problem with the lack of Thai decor but I did not like their music selection. The incongruity between reggae music and a Thai restaurant is a little much. Jerk Pad Thai anyone?
We started of with some Tom Yum Koong. I have probably had this soup more than a 100 times in Thailand and throughout North America and I have never tasted it so heavily flavoured with lemongrass before. It was not horrible but it was certainly not the traditional flavour profile. It was also a little skimpy on prawns.
The Fish Cakes were overly tough, rubbery and had no discernable fish flavour. But for the cucumber relish they would have been inedible.
I really liked the Pad Pik King Chicken. We asked for hot and that is what they delivered. It had a really nice balance of spices and the green beans were fresh and cooked to perfection.
We might come back and try a few different dishes but there needs to be an improvement in the overall food quality for us to consider becoming regulars. -

Being a vegetarian, my options are limited. However the staff is very friendly and accommodating to my needs. I always get the panang with tofu! It is absolutely delicious.
However, every time I go in the place isn't busy :( I hope they don't go anywhere! -

Wow, just tried Bob's and what another sad Thai food disappointment in Vancouver. I had high hopes for this place as I liked the simple approach and the unique western name.
We were both starving as we had to wait forever for our menus (we finally had to get up to get our own from an empty table) and then we waited some more.
We decided to each order our own dish which we made clear in our order, and that's where the fun began....
I ordered the Pad Thai (not too creative, but that's what I was in the mood for) and he ordered the Curry with mushrooms and something else. (He's not a big pad thai fan). I'm not a big Thai curry fan, so I didn't pay too much attention to his choice at first, at least until I realized that was all we'd be eating for our main course!
We shared the spring rolls which were a bit greasy but tasted pretty good, even if they were quite small for two spring rolls that were cut in half to make them look bigger, I imagine.
I would have liked a glass of wine, but since they did not have a liquor license, that was a no go. I was fine with just water as I was there for the food, after all.
He received his curry, which was buttery but quite tasty. Since we were both starving, he wolfed his down, and I saw my pad
Thai delivered to the larger table that had come in and ordered a little while after us.
So I had to WAIT until he was finished his curry (he shared a bit with me,) until the Pad Thai was delivered. I politely asked my server about this, and I realized, that she had completely forgotten my order. I tried to ask my date to wait a bit, but his food was getting cold, so I told him to go ahead, and I thought that I would give his dish a try.
At this point, he was pretty full, and then my food was finally delivered. He watched me eat my pad thai, until I knew that he was bored, and I finally just asked for a take-out container. It was tasty, but again oily. I usually ask for "less oil," but I had just given up.
Some reviewers mentioned that the portions were small, but actually, I preferred the quality of this place over the quantity, which would have been acceptable.
I could tell that the waitresses were working hard, but I was not accustomed to eating after my date, and not even having a drink (other than water) made the time go by that much slower.
Overall, the food was good, but is it too much to ask that we all eat together? I looked around, and some bigger tables seemed to only have one dish at a time, too. I guess that's how they do it here?
Also, I had to wait for a bit for the one bathroom, which apparently had no tp which is why the wait, I guess. It was clean, but unbearable to enter if you know what I mean. To pass the time, I stood by the bathroom and watched them scoop out the rice, while noticing the mounds of dishes (three tiers in fact) that they would be doing later in the night. I actually felt bad for them.
I would really like to give this place a higher rating, as the food was quite tasty, but unfortunately, the service here will prevent my return, even for take-out.
Next time, I'll try the classic Thai place up the street. Poor Bob.
ps-The price of Pad Thai at $12 is MORE expensive than some of the most expensive cities in the world and not half as good! And no alcohol? Anyone who rates this a 4 star has clearly never eaten in a more competitive market.... -

I was starving, and I think that helped. And opening a review on that note cant possibly be a very good sign, but its true. I just dont dig the atmosphere they've managed to (not) create. The food was definitely ok. I had the pad thai and my friend, the green curry. Nothing special on either end, but still good, and filling.
With a bunch of mixed reviews, I do hope this place gets better. or sorts out that something that seems to be missing. -
Review from Vincci L.
So the whole time I'm having my meal here, I'm wondering who Bob was. Didn't ever figure it out, but it'll always keep me wondering.
I finally got a chance to try out this place that many have been talking about. Their decor is simple, not much of a Thai influence, but sometimes its the food that brings you there.
We started off with some Thai iced teas, and they were good. Their food menu is simple, with an assortment of salads, curries, and rice and noodle dishes.
The Tom Yum Koong was great, lots of lemongrass flavour, and just the right balance of hotness and sourness. Wished there were more prawns in it though.
The beef salad marinated in lime juice and chili with cilantro, cucumber and red onion also had lots of flavours from the lime and chili, but it was too spicy for my tastes.
Thai fried rice was probably my favourite dish, it was fried rice done right. Each grain of rice had even flavour, and it was simple, but delicious.
A disappointment of the night must be the deep fried banana with ice cream dessert. The ice cream wasn't a very good ice cream, and the bananas they used were the small finger bananas (almost plantain like texture) which didn't taste that good when deep fried.
Overall, it's a nice Thai place for good food at reasonable prices. Service was good, but I'm still wondering who Bob is.Listed in: Main Street Eats

You know you keep weird hours when you often head to a restaurant for a meal only to find that it's closed between lunch and dinner. Can there be any disappointment greater than looking forward to eating, only to being met by a closed door?? Fortunately, tenacity (when it comes to food and all things food related) is my forte, and my darling dining companion and I endured grumbling tummies for the sake of pad thai. Let it be known, Yelpers, that Bob Likes Thai Food is closed between 3:00-5:00pm during the week. Weekends are continuous, 11:30am to 9:00pm.
As soon as 5:00pm rolled around, we headed back over to BLTF. Ambiance, as others have noted, is minimalist but functional. We settled in eagerly and were served water from the get-go. One gripe...the cups were so small that one drink of water effectively emptied half the glass. This meant that servers were constantly hovering and refilling water, which was a bit awkward, especially if you're like me and feel the need to say "thanks"...every single time.
Being pad thai fanatics, neither of us could be persuaded by anything else on the menu. But the swimming rama beckoned...what to do? We ordered it all! The pad thai was delicious, although not quite spicy enough for my tastes. The swimming rama was also tasty, but the pad thai was the clear winner. Hopefully, we will be able to break free from the grips of pad thai to order more broadly off the menu for future visits. I also heard the server saying that most menu items can be made vegetarian, by subbing tofu in place of meat. Portions were indeed smaller than one normally finds at thai places (never too much pad thai!), but I suppose the prices are marginally cheaper. Our meal wasn't anything outstanding, but it was very good...we walked away totally stuffed and happy, anyway.Listed in: Noontime Nomming, Excellent Ethnic

I really wanted to like this place. I adore Main Street, love the quirky name appeal, and was really banking on adding BLT to my roster of 'humble yet phenomenal' eats.
Friday dinner service, room was half full, at nice steady pace when the four of us were seated. Staff were super relaxed, friendly and attentive.
The Tom Yum Koong started the meal off nicely, with a moderately bright kick of lemongrass and galangal. Appetites whetted, the anticipation grew. But to our dismay, each subsequent dish fell flat, and flatter. The beef in the salad was overcooked, the salad was missing acidity; the fish curry overly sweet, and the duck curry contained very few bland, flaccid pieces of duck. Pad Thai, while indeed there was no ketchup present, there was also not much other presence; a little on the tart side. For our palates, we all found the dishes missing balance in their flavour profiles. (A thai iced tea was ordered half-sweet, and was still way too sweet for the three at the table who tasted it.)
Perhaps if I'm in the area and in need of a Thai fix, I will give BLT another go. But from first impression, it's a pass for me. -

I got takeout last night as a New Year's Eve treat, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that my only complaints about Bob's have been remedied:
The portions are now larger (at least for the swimming rama and stir fried veg dishes), and it appears as though prices have been raised accordingly. Also, there were six prawns in my pad thai this time, which seems like a reasonable number to have in a dish. Hooray!
I love this place and I'm going to keep going back. It now deserves a solid 4 stars. It's still cash only though, which in part holds it back from a five-star rating. I don't know why they don't have debit or credit machines up and running, but I would probably eat here more often if I didn't have to withdraw cash in order to do so.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I was so excited to go to Bob Likes Thai Food after all the amazing reviews. Unfortunately, it is neither cheap nor incredibly tasty. For $4.50, we got two chicken satay sticks with a very small amount of chicken spread out on them. I had the Tom Ka Gai, which is my staple order, and it was definitely good but not incredible. My friend ordered the Pad Si-Ew (not a very large portion), and it had so little flavor that he used the rest of the peanut sauce from the chicken satay on it.
Maybe we just hit it on an off night, but $30 for what we got seems quite steep.
Service was good, though. -

* 3.5 star new Thai with potential *
Do you know that disappointment when a restaurant you like closes down? That was my reaction when I saw a new sign on the old City Temple of Shanghai (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) that read "Bob Likes Thai Food."
Ok, so I'm sure there must be an amusing story behind the name. But it wasn't clear. I'm guessing Bob is the guy behind the counter? Hm.....
I ordered my standard test dish of grapow. They didn't have a beef version available, so I had the eggplant.
First the positives:
- They used a good amount of true holy basil, instead of the North American sweet basil many places substitute.
- They minced the bird chilli pepper nicely and had a good level of heat.
- The sauce was nicely balanced between the heat from the chillies, salt from the fish sauce, and sweetness from both sugar and the eggplants.
Room for improvement:
- The rice served was a low quality. It detracted from the excellent balance they had with the grapow.
- The mixed greens they served were a small handful of the type you get at a grocer with no dressing at all. Just the greens. Some were wilted. They were a distraction.
- They put two deep fried wonton crisps on top which were overly greasy and didn't have much flavour.
So overall it seems like they can get good flavours on the main part of the dish (which is no small feat!), and now just need to get the rest of the plate in order to move on up. I think this is really doable, and hope they do so soon! But for now, the grapow was a clear 4 stars, and the rest of the sides it came with were 2 stars. So 3.5 overall, and I'll round up to 4 because the primary focus of the dish was very good.
In any case, this new spot has potential. I hope it continues in a positive direction to a full 4 stars, or even 5!Listed in: Engrish, Vancouver Thai Food

So I didn't find Bob. Supposedly he was playing in the snow somewhere. At least he didn't take his chefs with him.
Battling the frigid -12 cold, their heater couldn't keep up. Having the same problem at my office, I sympathized completely. In talking about this with the manager, I learned that they don't even use their freezer. Everything is fresh. Unfortunately for them, the freezer is on the same breaker as their fridge, making it even harder for their heater to keep up!
Food matched the decor. Simplistic, honest, & definitively Thai.
Tom Yum Goong Soup: refreshing blast of lemongrass, mushrooms and prawns.
Spring Rolls: well-balanced mix of veggies and noodles. Sauce was addicting.
Fish Cakes: Wow. Usually these are pretty crummy at Thai places, but these were darn good.
Pad Thai: the benchmark of every Thai restaurant. Easily ranks in the Top 3 that I've tried based on the freshness of ingredients and balance of flavours.
The manager said they are going to build a communal dinning table as he felt it was important for his patrons to interact with each other and get off those damn smartphones and the like. I wholly respect this approach. Food is all about bringing people together.
Will return again (on a warmer day).

So second outing here and it did not disappoint. A friend mentioned they had not being able to get a table last time they went, so I reserved - good job I did! Much busier than last time we went, which is an excellent. Tried a different combination of dishes this time:
Panang beef - creamy with a good level of spice: papaya salad - spicier than last visit, but very good; fish cakes - can't have a meal without these yummy morsels. And then 2 dishes on the specials list - a cold minced pork salad, with toasted rice - nice combination and a pork sausage with lemongrass which was very good.
Service attentive and helpful.
Glad to see it is busier, hope it remains so, because it really would be such a pity to see somewhere serving as authentic thai food close!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Joshua B.
I checked this place out for the first time yesterday. I've tried a number of Thai food spots in Vancouver and haven't been that excited about any of them, so I was eager to cross another off the list.
The restaurant has very limited seating for how busy it was, so we opted for take out, which was likely a mistake. We ordered the Spring Rolls, Stir Fry Veg, and Pad Thai and were told 20 minutes. We showed up a half hour later and were made to wait almost another 30 minutes, which I found to be very annoying. Call me ornery but botched time estimations are a huge pet peeve of mine.
I will say that once we got it home, the food itself was enjoyable. The portions were certainly smaller than most of the ethnic food spots I've ordered from, but we liked what we were given. The spring rolls and stir fry veg both were crispy and well flavoured. The pad thai was heavier on the fish sauce than I'm used to, but it was good none the less. Definitely not one of those dense bricks of ketchup-flavoured noodles that gets passed off as pad thai in Vancouver. The food was all of a good quality.
In short, the food was tasty and of a good quality but the service and portions were lacking for the $30 we paid. Would we return? Possibly, but it would need to be on a less busy night. -

Place looks cute and artistic.
Food is great!! We ordered from their lunch menu.
Pad thai was good.. not too sweet. also it comes with one slice on lime :)
That's how we eat in Thailand!
Egg plant grapow was amazing!
Papaya salad our favourite Thai dish. (it was really good!)
The portion a little bit too small, but it is only $5... so nothing to complain..
We love to go back there again for dinner sometime soon.

When we walked in with our little kids, we thought, "Sure looks kid-friendly." They have books for kids on their coffee table in the waiting area and they seem to have lot of boosters/highchairs. They even have a sink in the dining area for people to wash their hands. Very neat! However, the water only came out in a dribble. So what is the point of that?
We ordered the wontons, pad thai and green chicken curry. The waitress had asked, "how spicy can the kids take?" and I said, "not spicy at all, please." She replied, "Ok. Then I'll ask them to make it mild." The wontons were the puniest wontons ever. The 6 wontons each contained a piece of chicken the size of your finger nail. When the pad thai came, it was definitely mild but spicy, so my youngest could not eat it at all and I had to order something else for him (chicken skewers - also super puny) but he was so sad that he couldn't have the noodles. When I mentioned to the waitress that I had to order something else because the pad thai was too spicy. She said, "Oh. Next time you should ask for extra mild." Uh... Ok... even though I had asked for not spicy at all. The green curry was definitely not mild, it was much more than a medium spicy even. Otherwise, the food was ok. We've had much better elsewhere.
In addition to all of the above, the restaurant was freezing. We were the only ones there. Maybe if it filled up, it would have been warmer.
We went on a recommendation from a foodie friend and were seriously disappointed. For the price and quality/portion size of food, you would have a far better experience at Sawasdee up the street, where you are served by truly friendly and hospitable Thai wait staff. -

This brand new addition to the neighbourhood (it was on its 4th day as of our visit!) is refreshing. My husband and I ordered three dishes: the fish cakes with cucumber relish, the panang beef (curry) and the beef salad, and two bowls of rice.
The panang beef and beef salad were both delicious. The panang beef was spicy and rich, while the beef salad was cool and zesty thanks to the lime juice and cilantro. The fish cakes were okay but a bit stiff - maybe that's the traditional way, who knows? Portion-size is fine.
Service was kind and attentive.
Everything was priced moderately.
Frankly there isn't much in terms of decor, and there is a *lot* of light in there, but I can tell that they have made efforts to make a cute place with limited resources. I particularly love the art on the walls.
We will go back, often. -

Like others have said, minimal decor, and they've definitely taken the effort they saved on the decor and put it into the food.
I judge Thai restaurants by the quality of their pad thai, and Bob's definitely doesn't disappoint in this department.
A friend of mine ordered the beef panang, and it was amazing! Just the right amount of hotness, and the spices were of the highest quality.
The prices were right as well.

The Pad Thai and Fish Yellow Curry tastes the closest to food IN Thailand that I've ever had in Vancouver. Pad Thai wasn't too "ketchup-ish" and the curry had a lot of flavor (not just spicy Coconut). Prices for dinner recently went up (~$12 a dish), but it's still worth it for the authentic flavor. Lunch is still a bargain. I can't go to any other Thai place on Main or Cambie now! Really good ingredients and they make a lot of their sauces in-house and fresh daily. Chicken Wontons with home-made plum sauce were really good too.

This place has no 'décor' to speak of, but once you taste the food you won't care that the interiors were most definitely not designed by "Evoke'.
The (lemongrass?) soup immediately transported me to Thailand with it's perfect seasonings and huge, fresh prawns. The chicken curry was the best I've ever had. Yes, there is, curiously, an unnecessary pile of undressed 'mixed greens' on the plate, but it didn't detract. The wonton chips garnish we had looked wan, but they were surprisingly tasty and crisp, not greasy at all. I hope this place stays open for a long time and doesn't succumb to the greedy landlord syndrome that has killed so many small, independent eateries on Main Street. -

Quite possibly the best Thai food I've had in Vancouver. Just the right amount of heat and spices. I especially loved the pork with green bean/basil and Panang beef. The green papaya salad was also to die for.
Setting is minimal and low key but the food makes the meal special. Can't wait to go back and try their lunch specials. -

The restaurant is minimally decorated. But once you've tasted the food, you would want to go back!
The pad thai here is the best I've ever had. They don't use ketchup to sweeten the pad thai like all other Thai restaurants. Instead, they use authentic home-made sauce with tamarind for the noodles, making the flavor just like what you get in Thailand.
We also had the panang beef, which was very nice with the right amount of heat.
We are definitely going back, and recommending this place to friends and family! -

Who the hell is Bob? That's what I thought when I first heard about this place. Turns out that Bob is a metaphor for "everyone" that likes Thai food. "Bob likes minimalism" is my metaphor for the decor. =P The restaurant setup is very simple. Tables along each side of the restaurant with a small waiting area in the front and cash counter at the back. You'll see Bob's Fork and Spoon adorning each of the side walls. You'll know what I mean when you go here. My partner and I ordered off of the lunch menu, which comprised of 5 specials($7.50). I had the Green Curry Chicken, he had the Panang Beef and we shared the Papaya Salad($4.50). The specials were served with Rice, Salad(cut up Iceberg Lettuce), and 2 deep fried Wonton Crisps. While the sides accompanying the specials need a little sprucing up, the Beef Panang and the Green Curry Chicken were delicious. The Papaya Salad was amazingly refreshing. The Lime Juice and the Chilies really brought the dish to life and the spice level of the dish, including the specials, was perfect! I wish Bob the best! I hope it lasts, it's a great addition to the neighbourhood!

I came here for dinner with a larger party and where do I begin? Well, let's start with the positives. The food was very good. We ordered about half the menu and each dish was flavourful. One note...most of the dishes were spicier than at other Thai restaurants in Vancouver. Prices are very reasonable.
Negatives... The dishes took a long time to arrive...like over 30 minutes (while the waiter did not once come by to check on our table). Bad service, the waiter was actually quite rude. When most of our dishes finally did arrive, we devoured them because we were so hungry. Then we sat there...no one cleared the plates and no one asked if we wanted more to eat or drink. When we finally called the waiter over, he said "you're all done now right?". Wrong. he had forgotten 2 of our dishes (but not before asking if we were sure we ordered them!!) We were promised that they would arrive in 5 minutes. One of them did, we finished it quickly (as we were still hungry). The 2nd was still missing. We decided just to get the bill rather than waiting around for it. While the waiter took the missing dish off the bill, he didn't apologize for forgetting the order, or even say "sorry, we're so busy/short staffed or whatever".
This type of restuarant (low pricing, no alcohol, no decor) you want to get in and get out. I don't want to be waiting around in their cold restaurant for my food to arrive and I definitely don't want to be treated like they couldn't care less if I was there. Because of the service, I will not be returning. -
