This ice cream is so much better than anything Seattle has to offer. Bluebird has a good variety and keeps a fresh rotation of flavors.
Not to single out for criticism it's neighbor down the street, which only serves fruit and herb flavored ice cream (BORING!), but Bluebird carries multiple chocolate, peanut butter, cinnamon, caramel, oatmeal, seasonal, local ingredients, and new idea flavors. That's what ice cream is supposed to be, not safe, lame, bland flavors. Plus, the line is never too long (as opposed to the sham down the street that confused people wait in line for), the space has a great cafe-feel (though it does get hot in the summer) with occasional live performances, beers on tap, other food and coffee, and lots of board games.
Also, delicious coconut mint... (wait for it...) is vegan. -

Needed some dessert after having drinks and apps at the Yelp Safari party. Checked my bookmarks and remembered that I wanted to try Bluebird.
It was easy to find but there was no parking - so I jumped out while hubby circled the block. They were really busy for a Monday night but the line moved fast. The gal who helped me was SUPER nice and friendly. I ordered a double with peanut butter and snickerdoodle ice cream. LOVED the peanut butter ice cream (can't believe it but it's the 1st time I've had it). However, the snickerdoodle ice cream was to sweet for me (and I like sweet). Would definitely come back here again to try some more flavors! -

Woah. This is some good stuff.
They make your waffle cone fresh when ordered. Had the cafe vita and creme egg flavors. Tasted exactly like coffee and cadburry eggs. It was amazing - ice cream was super creamy, cone was crunchy. The girl working there was super nice even though my friend wanted 3 flavors in ONE scoop.
I tasted the horchata flavor and didn't like it. -

I want to like this place, but we've stopped by four and five times in a row and they were "sold out" of waffle cones. Usually one of our favorite flavors is also sold out (Peanut Butter, Caffe Vita Coffee, Theo Chocolate, etc.). Usually only one employee and zero customer service. Tried to complain to the owner and he literally didn't care at all. Avoid this place, like the plague. Pretending to be local, organic, blah blah. Apathy running wild. Wish I could rate them as zero stars.
My business will go elsewhere..... -

What is Bluebird? The location I went to feels like it has an identity crisis. The things I've heard about Bluebird had really enticed me to seek out what all the fuss is about. Unfortunately, my two visits have left a bad taste in my mouth. First of all, I went there for ice cream, NOT ice cream soup. The way they scoop their ice cream almost immediately liquid-fied it as they handed me the cup. I was puzzled at their attempt to take the ICE out of ice cream. While we were enjoying our liquid ice cream, it really sucks to watch friends of the employee eating the fresh ice cream that is stored in a different cooler box. Along with the sorry excuse for an ice cream, the service was definitely lacking.
On a second visit, my friend and I were given such small portions. This is astonishing because of the reviews on here seem to imply that one scoop is the size of a baseball. Ours was more like a golf ball. Plus, it didn't help that both times we drank our ice cream.
Maybe more visits would have rounded out my review but frankly it's not worth my money wasted on this establishment.
In summary: great flavors, poor service, poor quality. Will not go again. -
Review from Eli W.
Bluebird is a solid local business selling great products in a cool space.
Sitting in an area among a myriad of other dessert oriented joints, Bluebird still succeeds to stand out. This is obviously due to good service and unique offerings.
My favorite thing to get here is the Affogato (Scoop of your choice of ice cream with a shot of espresso poured over it). This thing is freakin' delicious. Get your jolt of caffeine and your craving for a dessert in one go.
I have to say a place that serves local brews, Stumptown coffee, ginger beer, craft ice cream, and locally sourced foods with no pretentiousness attitudes is a five star joint in my books. -

I will give Bluebird another chance in the future, but for now I give it one star because the server was no help at all and I ended up without any ice cream. Maybe next time it will be staffed by someone who cares to take my money.

The bf had some of their snickerdoodle ice cream and was dying to try this spot. The place looks more like a cafe than an ice cream spot. The space is set up like a cafe and had tables and seating arrange to hang out.
I tried the chocolate pudding in a homemade waffle cone. Wow, talk about tasting like a chocolate pudding cup in ice cream form! It didn't taste at all heavy and was very flavorful. The bf had snickerdoodle, which tasted exactly like the cookie! I was pretty blown away by the flavor. I'll be coming back to try their pistachio and salted caramel, which were both out when we arrived. -

After eating pizza at Piecora's, we had pie at High 5 Pie. The Rhubarb pie came ala mode with this amazing snickerdoodle ice cream. We found out it was Bluebird ice cream, located just around the corner. So off to Bluebird we headed, to get a pint or two for later.
It's a fun little venue. They had board games in one corner, so a group of friends or a family could come in and have some ice cream and play some games. The staff was friendly.
The ice cream is delish. Between the 4 of us, we had several tastings of the different flavors. We settled on a pint of snickerdoodle and a pint of peanut butter to take home with us. We ate our pints a little later that evening. Both flavors were amazing and possibly the best ice cream we've ever had (and we've had tons of ice cream.) It is $6/pint, which is quite pricey. For a treat, it's okay, but we couldn't go have this ice cream too often. -

Bluebird is hands down my favorite ice cream place on the hill, above Molly Moons & Yogurtland. Every flavor I have tried was great, some favorites include snickerdoodle & their coffee (made from Cafe Vita coffee beans) HIGHLY reccomend going with an affogato, a scoop of ice cream with an espresso shot poured over it, you won't be dissapionted. Also have a weird love for drinking water out of mason jars, so thumbs up for having mason jars handy next to the water jug & super cozy couches to lounge on while eating.

I've lamented since moving to Capitol Hill the dearth of good ice cream parlors, so I was delighted to find Bluebird. Got the local huckleberry in a sugar cone, which was top quality so I mistook it for a waffle cone at first... None of your pale tan processed sugar cones for this place! My boyfriend's coffee scoop was also delicious. The portions were too big for this tummy, but can you have too much of a good thing?

I was hoping for excellent ice cream after a disappointment with Maggie Moon's. I must say, Bluebirds was better. The vanilla ice cream was outstanding. It was extremely creamy, soft, with a distinct vanilla flavor. I had it served with caramel sauce, which was a nice added touch. We also tried the cinnamon flavor, which I hear is a top seller. It was good, but the cinnamon flavor was a little too overpowering for me. It tasted a lot like Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
Pros: Super fantastic ice cream and friendly service
Cons: The place seems a little dirty and the atmosphere is not very welcoming -
Review from Vivian H.
Weirdest atmosphere, ever.
The guy behind the counter didn't even say hi. He waited awkwardly until we were ready to order. It was dark and quiet and I felt like I had to speak in a hushed voice. Aren't ice cream parlors usually bright and cheery?
The flavors weren't even that great. PB&J was just a combination of two different flavors. Lame. The only thing is that they have beer floats, but since this place weirded me out, I'm probably not going to come back for that. -

Last night was probably the 5th or 6th time I've been to Bluebird so I think a review is in order. Look, I love ice cream. After being in Arizona so much I've developed a diversionary "healthier" tendency toward frozen yogurt, but ice cream is still the real deal... And this place does the real deal the right way! Bluebird's ice cream is very good!
My favorite is Cafe Vita ice cream with hot fudge on top, but that's just a personal recommendation. Anything is good...other recommendations include: Maple Hickory (to die for), Northwest Strawberry, Peppermint Mocha, and my other must-have: Theo Chocolate Chunk. Bottom line: you can't miss here.
4 stars instead of 5 only because I'm not a big fan of the chaos in the Pike/Pine corridor at times, last night they were busy and understaffed which meant it took a LOMG time to get served, parking can be prohibitive if you want a quick ice cream stop, and my favorite ice cream in the city is still at Full Tilt. But those things aside, Bluebird is a close second for me.
It's funny because I have never sought this place out. That means every visit has been because someone else wanted to go and I agreed. But thats my bad. Next time I'm on Capitol Hill thinking dessert, Bluebird is gonna be all my idea! -

Seattle, WA
This is my favorite ice cream place in Seattle. I have only been to the Capitol Hill location. I'll keep this brief: large portions, modest prices, friendly staff, funky local vibe and, best of all, there's not a line of 100 people like you'll find at that other place about 2 blocks away.
Honestly I do not understand why the line isn't here, since it is hands-down the better place. Chock it up to marketing, I suppose.
If you want ice cream, I suggest you put a bird on it. Okay, that was bad. -

Forget that other place, go to Bluebird. Try their snickerdoodle, or chocolate pudding ice cream. If you're in good company, share the "bird's nest" sundae...omgsogood.
Open late on the weekends, wifi, and good espresso too. -

I was trying to kick my sugar habit only to be introduced to the handmade waffle cones and snickerdoodle ice cream....wow. I love this place but get in early to make sure you get a cone. You may be tempted to take some home in a pint but it's best consumed dipped from one of their containers. Major fan!

I have a problem.
Bluebird's flavors are amazing. I've sampled so many and loved them all... however, I can't stop myself from ordering their coffee flavored ice cream EVERY damn time I come here. Be it Stumptown, cafe vita, whatever -- I always end up with a giant scoop of that delicious bean flavored goodness. Sure, I switch things up with toppings -- like their thick and decadent hot fudge that they pile on with helpings so generous that you have MORE fudge than ice cream. But it's always the coffee I go for.
And maybe a beer to wash it down while playing a board game on a comfy couch with good company.
This place is the bees knees. And their coffee ice cream always keeps me coming back.Listed in: The quickest way to my…

Review from Kevin C.
If ice cream stores were antipsychotics, Molly Moon would be Celexa to Bluebird's Lexapro. (Sorry, I've clearly been in medical school too long. See footnote for explanation) Bluebird is everything Molly Moon wants to be but fails pathetically at - authentic, genuine, organic. There's a vintage clothing and art store in the effing attic of the space, for christ's sake. Not to mention the ice cream is fantastic - smooth, bright flavors, not heavy handed or filled with ice crystals like @ MM. The live music is iffy some nights, but it adds to the feel of the place. You know what also adds to the feel? Not having floor-to-ceiling shelves filled with nauseating dog shirts and baby onesies plastered with your company name shamelessly splashed on the front. When you have a great product, you don't have to shove it down other people's throats with bizarre schwag.
*Lexapro and Celexa contain the same active ingredient, but Lexapro is a "purified" form of Celexa. See? That was funny.* -

ICE CREAM! BEER! BOARD GAMES!!!!!!! ALL IN ONE PLACE!!!!
Ok, now that I have that out of the way. I can let you all know that I heart bluebird. I have only had the peanut butter, and the theo's chocolate chunk, but they are both so yummy! Plus, for only $3 a scoop, its such a good deal! Plus you can add another scoop and be completely gluttonous for only $1!
Great location. I love all the awesome local beers. You can even get a beer float. I wouldn't, but it's still cool. The space is adorable, and even has a room upstairs for like meetings and stuff. They serve you your ice cream in a coffee cup. Plus, everything is compostable!
If you are going to not only survive on Sugar Hill, but do so well that you can open another location in Fremont, you obviously gotta be doing something right.
I can't think of any negatives. It's pure awesomeness. GO! -

We had the vegan coconut milk mint chocolate chip ice cream and the Theo chocolate chunk. Both were very good.
I am not usually one to eat chocolate ice cream although I love good chocolate. I usually opt for a lighter and more subtle flavor ice cream. However, this was one of the best chocolate ice creams I have had. It was rich and so chocolate-y!
Friendly scooper and trendy atmosphere. I like they they offer vegan options including ice cream made with coconut or rice milk. The dairy free options makes being dairy free or dairy avoiding not feel like a compromise!Listed in: Sweet Treats

I am a fan of their ice creams, but not a fan of their physical store. It's a tad too dingy and dirty for me to look past the hipsterness that is the Capitol Hill area. The area behind the counter was messy and dirty, with fruit flies running amuck, but at least the ice cream was nicely sheltered behind some glass.
Anyways, onto the ice cream. We got a peanut butter one and coconut ice cream with smores or some kind of cookie bits. Both were freakin' awesome and the coconut one was even dairy free (perfect for my lactose intolerant kid). If I lived in that area, would probably eat there as often as I hit up Molly Moons in my neck of the woods. -

Yes! the Ice Cream hipster destination.... I guess this is my spot What is this some artisan and vegan steez?? indeed.
Alright flavors are amazing and plentiful...my faves are snickerdoodle, vita, horchata, and coconut mint...DAMN shits blissfu! yea really progressive flavors (See pic of menu if ur interested in seein the selection).
Space is nice and open. High ceilings and plenty of seating.. doesnt feel claustrophobic like Full Tilt and Mollys... Not really any long lines, so u dont have to take an 90 minutes for your experience. Oh and prices are hella reasonable $4 for one megascoop waffle cone, compared to the $6 at Mollys.
Enjoy!Listed in: Where to take your lady out…

If I have to die - and I'd rather not, you know, but if I absolutely must - I'd like to die of a Bluebird-induced pleasure explosion. Or implosion. Whichever is easier to arrange.
I've tried a good portion of their menu and I've got to say every single thing they offer is better than the comparable product at Molly Moon's. I know Molly Moon's blasts waffle cone smell into the surrounding area, and I know it's right by Cal Anderson, but oh my lord if you'll just walk another couple blocks you'll be seriously rewarded. Plus: beer floats. Yes, that's right. Beer. Floats. Beer with ice cream. Beer with beer ice cream, if you'd like. Bluebird is simply the best frozen dairy dessert option on the Hill and I will cagefight you if you dare to disagree.Listed in: You're the BEST arooouuuund!, Pour Some Sugar On Me

Awesome ice cream counter person.
Even though the building was ON FIRE---yes there was a fire, and even though the place was filling with smoke, the guy behind the counter (who was also running around making phone calls and closing the tall windows with the long pole thingie) did give me tastes of things and pour espresso on my ice cream--What a place!
What an employee! And the ice cream is decent too...will be back...
(The fire dept was pretty awesome too--it was highly entertaining, having a ladder and 2 engines and an aid car and a captain and the whole street closed off....they had the fire out in 3 minutes that's SFD!!) -
Review from Tom B.
I can't really wade into the fray of the dessert wars here, because this is the first of the gourmet creameries I have tried. But it's very, very good.
What stands out first and foremost about this place is that they want it to be a hang--sofas and loveseats, tables and chairs. You can tuck away and chat for a while. What stands out secondmost (and maybe sticks in your head the longest) is that they have a huge draft lineup. All interesting kegs, too--it's not the usual Manny's, Mac & Jack's, and Mirror Pond.
But what most people will mention, and rightly so, is the ice cream. It's the business, from what I can see. I tried the marionberry, and had bites of the chocolate and peanut butter combo serving. Both were fantastic--super dense, no air to them at all, but not gooey or runny in the least. Beautiful forward flavors. What's not to like?
On the walls were lots of Haida-looking Northwest-style native totem art; black, red and white totems of crows, and car keys, and a dollar sign. Nice cynical manipulation of all-too-familiar iconography that lost its heritage a long time ago in home-decor galleries. In addition to the framed pieces for sale, there's a 12-foot T-rex in Haida colors overseeing the dining room from its place as a wall mural. No doubt the art rotates but the current hangings are worth mentioning. Very cool place with friendly, capable staff. -

Laptop camper here. Homemade ice cream and free wi-fi? I had to come with my laptop. Bluebird has a funky ambiance (It seems to share the space with a t-shirt shop upstairs. They have an Osama Bin Laden jacket on display) including an old velvet couch, milk bottle light fixtures and an old piano. They had about 15 flavors of ice cream made with local, organic ingredients whenever possible, a vegan option, and sorbets ($3 for 1 scoop or $4 for 2 scoops). They also serve beer, beer & ice cream floats, coffee, tea, sandwiches, salad, shakes, floats, sundaes.
Ice cream flavors: Chocolate pudding, Elysian stout, Stumptown coffee, Maple hickory, Snickerdoodle, Theo chocolate chunk, Coconut mint chip, Triple berry, Vanilla bean, Peanut butter, Heartbeets, Coconut caramel, Peppermint white chocolate chip, Oatmeal cookies & cream
* Vanilla bean - sweet, mellow, and smooth, but not enough vanilla flavor
* Snickerdoodle - smooth, rich, but too sweet
* Stumptown coffee - stronger than usual, really good, not too sweet
* Oatmeal cookies & cream - has chunks of oatmeal cookies, good but could use more flavor
The ice cream had a nice texture, firm, dense and not airy. They make their own cones.
I was ready to camp for a bit but then a band was setting up a stage right next to where I was sitting. Maybe it turns into a club at night. The door had a sign that said "hipsters enter through the side door."
You know you love me. X0 X0, laptop camper. -

I hate birds. True story. There, I said it, I don't like birds. But don't ever judge an ice cream shop by it's cover because behind the frightening blue bird sign, there's a preview of what I imagine to be heaven.
Several funky, delicious flavors to be had and a great area for hanging out filled with board games. And, prepare to be blown away, BEER FLOATS. Yes, beer floats... I have now pondered for 5 minutes trying to figure out how to continue this review. I decided I will just stop. Go try it. Try it for yourself and start a new chapter of your life. Even if you don't like birds. -
Review from Rachel G.
First of all, Bluebird gets 5 stars based on the fact that the ice cream didn't have me running to the bathroom!
I was lucky enough to be hanging with Leonardo R. today so we went and grabbed some ice cream and enjoyed it at Cal Anderson so we could reminisce over the Molly Moons disaster a few months ago. But Bluebird made me so much happier than that other "gourmet" ice cream shop. I got the Snickerdoodle and loved it. Their waffle cones are delicious and very gentle so make sure you get lots of napkins. You WILL be wearing your ice cream, but in the most delightful way.
In conclusion, Leonardo said it best when he proclaimed, "from Bluebird, you get ice cream, not diarrhea." -

Among the 3 of us, we shared 4 scoops: elysian stout, apple pie, peanut butter, and marionberry. How amazingly satisfying! They were all creamy, smooth, and had great flavor! The peanut butter was truly peanut buttery and went well with the marionberry (made it a good pb&j combo, like the friendly server suggested). My favorite was the elysian stout--it had a slight coffee taste and was velvety & rich.
It's a friendly, bright blue space, welcoming people to enjoy themselves (and the delicious ice cream!) with the many board games they have available. The only negative... the couches are a bit dirty. -

Berkley-esque with street vendors outside the door, strange contorted paintings on the wall (maybe they would make more sense after purchasing some whackyweed from the "farmer's market" outside- just seems a probability), handmade furniture, much of it restored & reconstituted, the avant-garde waste reduction system, and owners who are excruciatingly bent on providing sustainable and local fare no matter the cost.
Not that it comes to a great cost for the customer. You can get 1 scoop of ice cream for $3 and each additional scoop for $1. Seriously, pile it on!
You're going to want to with flavors like Elysian Stout Beer (tastes like beer), PB & J (this is actually 2 scoops, one from locally ground peanuts, the other olympian marionberry), Snickerdoodle (cinnamon & sugar, my personal favorite), Stumptown Coffee, Cupcake Royale (very very sweet and cakey), and Mighty O Doughnut (chocolate brownie battered ice cream).
Their 2 vegan options (on rotation) are Mighty O Doughnut and Horchata. Both could blow your mind.
You may or may not see any of these flavors when you step inside. It's seasonal, it's rotational, it's a whim...
And it's all incredibly delicious!!!
So while we're all waiting on their hemp flavor to arrive, let's celebrate the ice cream shop intent on saving the world, 1-4 scoops at a time!Listed in: The Locavore, Summertime.. Ice Cream!

Excellent coffee shop with great ice cream - all sorts of interesting flavors. I like it better than nearby Molly Moon or Creamery - both in terms of food and atmosphere. Art can be hit or miss, as can the music. Lots of games, and nice friendly atmosphere.

I had to walk up the hill in Capitol Hill to reach this baby of mine. After a journey filled with anticipation, blood, and sweat- I finally was greeted by a flashing blue sign of their bird. Hence, blue bird, you lead me to light. Mind you, it was late, so my eyes were not adjusting so well to the dark. I felt like a dracula roaming the empty streets. I enter a sub entrance, where the path is diverged, one to another shop, and one to bluebird, afterwards, you proceed down wooden staircase then finally, the real deal.
I really liked the place, with semi adorable graffiti painted big on one part of the light skyblue wall. It has a real nice vibe to it. I heard there were boardgames too! Way to hit straight to my nerdy heart! If you purchase and consume it there, they serve ice cream in a cute shiny white mug. I got it for to-go so it was a white tall cup with a print of their logo. I looked at their chalkboard of a menu and chose cj's peanut butter and chocolate pudding. Who's CJ? I shall reserve that question for my next visit. For two large scoops, it was for ~$4.
I felt relieved that there was actually people in the store, even though it was only two different families with kids. At least they agree with me that no matter what the time is, ice cream is always a yes!
The peanut butter was really smooth and creamy, if I could describe the texture to the exact, just dip your spoon into a jar of creamy peanut butter of your choice (JIF, Skippy) and put it in your mouth, that's the consistency of the peanut butter ice cream. They exactly replicate not only the flavor, but also the consistency, I'm impressed. The flavor was strong, that after hours of my consumption, my breath still reeks of peanut butter. Too much of it soon turns not so good. But moderate spoonfuls are magnificent! Not recommended for rare peanut butter eaters. It will blow your sensitive tongue away!
The chocolate pudding is the one I love! It was just really thick chocolate, not single chocolate, but felt like it was doubled. Granted, I never tried chocolate pudding. But this tastes just like chocolate, double chocolate, triple chocolate. Everyone loves chocolate, so I suggest this flavors, because it's so universal.
Quick thoughts: Texture was something new. Hint: very creamy, very smooth, yet extra thick.
Next time, I'll be sure to hang around for a while. It's an awesome spot! Family-friendly, cozy, home-y. -
Review from Adam C.
Seattle hardly seems an appropriate place for a frozen-treats cold war, but with the proliferation of local ice cream, fro-yo, frozen custard, and gelato places all over this city, the war has begun.
We tried Bluebird simply because we hadn't been there before. I sampled the candied ginger, Cafe Vitta, and Elysian Stout.
I ended up with the Vitta, and loved it. It had a strong coffee flavor and a bit of coffee grounds in it. The Elysian was unique and the one I'll order next time. It had a mild, almost caramel taste.
All in all, a funky little place with tasty ice creams. And as a leg-up in the cold war, they also serve beer on tap, which sets them apart from other purveyors of frozen treats.
