Review from Jenna M.
I'll admit: we were a little bit skeptical at first of Blue Sunshine. The website is somewhat mysterious, but my Degrassi-obsessed friends and I learned that the Sunshine would be showing the original Degrassi High made-for-TV movie -- with show creator Yan Moore in attendance for Q&A -- during the weekend we were in town, and we were determined to be there. We weren't sure, however, how to get tickets, how much it cost, or how busy it was going to be. So we stopped by the morning of the show, only to climb a long flight of stairs down a narrow passageway and find a door to what appeared to be someone's apartment. The person who answered the door was very friendly, if not a little confused about why we were there, and he told us to come back a few minutes before the doors were scheduled to open before the show, and we would probably have no trouble getting tickets.
I'm so glad we did.
When we got back to Blue Sunshine that evening, the doors were open and nostalgic Canadian hipsters were sprawling into the hallway. We were invited in, bought our tickets ($10 each, plus a free drink), and seated in what was clearly someone's living room. Seats had been lined up like a cinema in the large viewing room, and snippets from Degrassi Junior High were playing on the large projection screen at the front. People were sitting and chatting, or mingling in the kitchen in the back, and we grabbed drinks from the fridge and got seats. It was like someone's house party or vacation slide show viewing; that is, totally charming.
The movie got rolling just after 8pm, and the sound and video quality were great, despite running off of an old VHS tape. And it was such an experience to speak with Yan Moore after the film. Blue Sunshine seems to be a really great addition to the neighborhood; not only will they be showing movies like this, but they also have art exhibitions and classes available throughout the week. This might become a tradition whenever I am in Montreal! -
Review from Michele G.
Kier-La Janisse and David Bertrand have recently opened Blue Sunshine, which gives Montreal a cool new space to watch weird old films, attend master classes, and see cool art. I just went for a HP Lovecraft master class with director Stuart Gordon and screenwriter Dennis Paoli! It was a fun time, with clips, questions, and I met them both, on my birthday, no less!
