Review from Anne M.
Let me preface this by saying - I have never failed to leave a tip before in my life.
I am able to rationalize bad service to a fault. In my travels, no matter where I am in the world, I have consistently tipped 15 - 20% and occasionally more for exceptional service. I can rationalize the worst of service with a bad day, a death in the family, new on the job, illness, the works.
This ended in Quebec.
Nothing occurred at Blu with less than a 25 minute wait. Sushi and a cardboard pizza took over an hour. You know what DIDN'T occur during that hour? A drink refill. Not even once. My wine glass and water glass were empty for over 45 minutes. Meanwhile, a man who I presume to be the owner, was taking shots with the bartender and a patron.
We watched plates of appetizers be served to the large party behind us. We watched our waitress giggle with her friends at a table across the restaurant. The sole drop of wine left in my glass began to evaporate.
And the food? I've never met a sushi roll I didn't love - but the "crunch" in the "chef's choice roll" was made out of sweetened cereal. I kid you not. Sweetened Rice Crispies. My reaction? "It isn't... it can't be... yup, it is".
After mounting frustration with service so poor it almost began to mirror disrespect and we began to question if there was a deeper reason for this - we decided to leave a $1 tip. It is a bold statement. One that I have never had to make. And what was the result? The waitress chasing us out of the restaurant telling us "In Quebec, we tip 15%". Our response? "Honey, you would've gotten 20% and on a higher bill at that, had you done even a SLIGHTLY better job."
If this place doesn't close in a year, it will be a miracle. The only people getting good service at Blu appeared to be friends of the staff. And something tells me they weren't tipping 15% either.
Shame on the owner, who sat there and let his restaurant be horribly mismanaged. Take a lesson, sir. -
Review from Dane K.
The place has a nice interior and seems like maybe a nice place for drinks, but the food and service are lacking. It seemed like cheap Sysco food service garbage food all around.
I ordered a mushroom/swiss burger. They don't cook burgers to how you like them, they cook everything "well done" (which is way too much...). Strike 1.
I asked for Dijon mustard after the food arrived, they told me they didn't have that. No Dijon in French-Canadian Canada? Say it ain't so!
The burger came w/ fries and a small side salad. The side salad had the most disgusting Italian dressing on it ever. It made it inedible.
And no surprise, but the burger was too well cooked.
Brian ordered a burger that came w/ "candied" onions. They were disgusting and completely inedible, should not have been served.
The whole place seemed to be served by one guy who was doing both the food service as well as being the bartender. I had a glass of Blu Sangria, it was good but he forgot to bring it to me and I had to remind him.
