Review from Tammy Y.
Okay. So let's try this again. (I wrote a 4-paragraph long review of this one, and then accidentally erased it. So, here it is, albeit slightly abridged).
I like visiting small towns, and with small towns, you cannot expect the same kind... er... variety as you might in a big city. That being said, it was a delight to come across Blackburn's after walking past a number of divey family restaurants and big chain joints.
Nestled in by the waterside, Blackburn's is a small, contemporary-looking steakhouse offering meals that are pricey, but delicious. Appetizers include a good-sized serving of lobster bisque, french onion soup (with a surprisingly crisp bread topping) and even miniature crab cakes. Specializing in steaks, naturally, the only vegetarian options are pickerel or salmon. There is a hefty selection of different cuts of meat, and after a survey around the table (and some help-myself samples), everyone's meat was flavourful and satisfying. The only criticism might be that the "medium-rare" was leaning a little more on the "rare" side than we might like. Each steak comes with an interesting assortment of veggies and a garlicky double-baked potato. Yums!
While the menu is pricier than most other steakhouses, the portions are thankfully not so huge that you end up rolling yourself out of the place on a dolly. We managed to squeeze in a dessert to share, and went for the recommended apple blossom with vanilla ice cream. Divine. Great to share and a nice sweet finish to a hearty meal.
Notes: Bathrooms are lovely - take a visit. Reservations are highly recommended, especially if you want a window-side seat to enjoy the view of the water. Dress is a weird mix of fleece and denim to upscale casual. Take your pick.
