We also stayed at this place using Groupon,  2 nights in a one bedroom suite that came with a $50 dinner voucher and a bottle of wine.

Our first night we heard bass coming from the first level (Prom night) we called the front desk and they moved us within 20 minutes. Very, very friendly staff.

The modern rooms are awesome. We did have to turn the heat off in all the rooms because it gets a little warm inside...opened the windows and listened to the ocean.

The kitchen has pretty much everything you need to cook. Loved the shower, I'm 6'5 and had lots of room...rain shower head, separate deep tub and heated bathroom floors. I don't want to go home.

    This is a tough one.

The rooms are beautiful. The staff are friendly and cooperative.

The cleaning staff does a wonderful job, which isn't too tough if you see the pristine fixtures with which they work.

    BUT...

They recommended me to a hair salon before a wedding, correction; a salon that appeared to be a salon, run by a very sweet lady, who had NEVER done hair in her entire life.

It was absolutely awful. I was there for over an hour and a half for a 30 minute job. I only paid her as she really did try, but upon reflection I should have left her nothing. And I didn't walk out because I had already spent so much time there that I wanted to leave with a "semblance" of a hairdo. She told me she had lent out her regular tools for a wedding. You have got to be kidding me, right? And THIS from an alleged five star hotel? I don't think so.

What kind of hotel recommends a shady business??? I called to let the front desk manager know, and she basically laughed, told me she'd take note of my tip, and recommended that I try their breakfast with "average" reviews I might add.

I just don't think that the staff is very well trained, and sadly, this entire experience dampened my experience at the hotel. If I'm going to pay over $350 a night (for a room with only a partial view) I don't expect them to "mess up" on whom they recommend.

Very disappointed in how the hotel handled it, too.

We stayed at this place on a Groupon that my boyfriend had purchased for 2 nights in a one bedroom suite that came with a 50$ dinner voucher and a bottle of wine. It turned out to be an absolutely stunning place!

Having been born and raised on the island, it never occurred to me to vacation here. What? A hotel in Ucluelet?! Three years ago I'd have balked at the very idea of spending money to stay somewhere I could drive to in an hour, let alone a place with few amenities or nightlife, at that! But alas! My mind has been changed since moving to Vancouver and the day-long trek to the west coast beckons me in a way I never thought possible.

Every room has a view or at least a partial view. It is beautiful and calming, service is fantastic. I simply adore this resort and could have stayed there another night with no objections. The rooms are enormous and have kitchenettes with Miele appliances and gas fireplace. The bathroom - with a view through the bedroom to the ocean!- seems somehow eerily larger than the tiny suburban suite I call home.

The restaurant, Fetch, has cuisine that rivals Vancouver's most stellar fine dining establishments. With a view of the ocean, you simply can't go wrong.

For those of you who have stayed at the Wickanninish Inn, this place easily rivals it in many aspects and based on price alone, it easily surpasses it.

I always feel as though I need to justify the lack of a fifth star. So here goes.
It's not on a sandy beach. In fact, there isn't much for beaches in Ucluelet necessitating a trip to Tofino (Which one should do anyway, simply for the beaches if nothing else). Also, the windows and patio doors in our suite were dreadfully difficult to open. I suppose this is not a dire issue, but it was a real fight! For such a nice resort, it should not have been such a headache.

This is a review for the restaurant, Fetch.

We ate lunch there on a Monday.  I had beef linguini with Bacon - it was quite rich and delicious.   My daughter had Salmon (slightly overcooked) on a salad, with fried cheese curds.  I thought the fried cheese curds were weird and kind of tasteless, but I'm not cheese curd expert.

The iced tea seemed to be Lipton Brisk (or something out of a fountain).  (That is common in restaurants in BC, for those of you coming from the Southern US.)

Our waitress disappeared after serving our meal, but we didn't mind because we enjoyed the sun and view from our patio perch.

I wouldn't drive too far to go to Fetch, but it was an acceptable lunch.

I wanted to give 5 stars for the view alone, but unfortunately, black rock resort has some pretty serious shortcomings to tackle. I'd call this a very high 2 stars. I'm going to write this review as if I'd been a full price paying customer. Regardless if your trip is on a groupon or not (our honeymoon was), you expect the quality of everything to live up to the location, the view and especially the prices.

Although the parking layout is unfortunate for some of the rooms, we lucked out and parked close to the lobby. Check in was a breeze other than not getting a 3G or Wifi signal in the lobby to pull up my receipt on my phone.

Off we went to our room and discovered that our upgrade had us in one of the top rooms in the whole place, we were initially overjoyed with everything. We settled in, our room was more like a 4 room condo with an ENORMOUS deck looking out over the water, so far everything is great. One of us uses the washroom and we realise that the button on the toilet is sticking open, ok no big deal.

We carried on down to the lounge after getting unpacked, ordered 2 drinks that sounded just like what we'd want and a couple appys. Both drinks were subpar. My gingerbeer, dark rum, lime juice, lime and oj drink came off overly sweet and not very nice. My wife's mojito used a mint syrup instead of fresh mint and she really didnt like it either. "That's OK!" we thought, "that confit duck poutine with fresh cheese curd sounds fantastic" alas, it was not, the duck had no texture, was grey and cold. The cheese curds were not even close to fresh, not a hint of a squeak when you bit them, and about 10-20% of the fries were overcooked hard. The dish was also so salty that I personally couldn't eat it. My tempura veg roll was ok but unmemorable. When asked how everything was, I told the server/bartender our concerns and he replied "ya we've been having some issues with the poutine lately", honesty is great, but if you're having food problems, FIX THEM! To their credit they did reduce the bill. We decided that between two sub par drinks, one truly bad appy and one blah appy, to move on for the evening and just have some wine in our room.

The next morning we discovered that in addition to the stuck toilet problem, that the carpet had nails coming up vertically through it at the entrance to the bathroom and my wife stepped on one unknowingly (it was the smooth edge to keep the carpet in place) and put a nail into her foot! We had a shower in their luxurious spacious rain head shower which was fantastic, until the shower head starting having a fit and loudly and aggressively jumping back and forth between shower head and hand wand output, we pulled the lever back to rain head, but it kept flipping out every few minutes. The room got so hot we had to leave all the windows open all night and we got eaten alive by mosquitoes.

We went for breakfast at Fetch, the seemingly high class in-resort restaurant. We were seated quickly, service was fine, dishes sounded great, restaurant looked nice, that is, until you start looking around and notice some of the poor quality workmanship. The carpet tiles were laid out with no pattern matching, so the floor looks just sloppy, then we notice a wood ceiling panel drooping down 3 inches in one corner right over our heads, then more and more things started becoming evident. Breakfast arrives and looks good but the flavour balance was all off for me and the toast was buttered in the centre only, leaving a very thick dry border. Compared to the price and to how the dishes were described, it was really really disappointing. We thought that maybe the head chef wasn't on that morning (trying to preserve hope that dinner could be excellent) but it turns out he was. Then and there we decided we would not be eating or drinking any further at the resort. That night we found a little place right in Ucluelet that absolutely blew Fetch out of the water.

I've heard that the construction at black rock went to the lowest bidder with a viciously short time frame to complete the project and it shows. A room that normally goes for $400/night should be near perfect. Having a malfunctioning toilet, nails spiking patrons in the foot through the floor and a shower that scares the poop out of you when it has a seizure (let alone sloppy tile work around the tub and other things), does not live up to your expectations for a high class luxury resort. They did fix all the things we mentioned to them while we were out for the day, kudos for that. The room was mostly nice and if you've never been to the west coast of the island before, you will find the view and scenery breathtaking.

To black rock management: your maintenance team needs to be much more proactive (walk the rooms when they're unoccupied and check EVERYTHING), Fetch needs a lot of work. Standards are everything and you do disservice to the location by not keeping yours higher. We enjoyed our stay but would not return at full price.

A beautiful resort with an amazing view.  As all the other reviews say, it's in a beautiful secluded location, and perfect for those that want to get away from it all, do some wonderful outdoors activities (hiking, surfing, swimming if you like it cold, kayaking, etc).  Service is friendly and professional, and I agree that the bathrooms were FANTASTIC: rainhead showers with instant INSTANT hot water and big soaker tubs and heated tile floors in the bathroom and a small kitchenette for those who don't want to eat out every meal.

The only improvements: would like to have the opportunity to have a pay-per-movie, though it did have a DVD player if you have your own, and the option for room service would be nice.

Loved it and hope to be back soon.

You will not find a nicer place on Vancouver Island, I am sure.

Way out on the edge of the Pacific Rim, in tiny little Ucluelet, sits the world-class Black Rock resort. The ocean waves are ferocious, crashing against the volcanic rock that sits just above the surface, and the views are stunning. It was raining like mad when we visited, but in no way did this diminish our experience.

Bonus points for having extra-large showers AND heated tile floors in the bathroom. We can't wait to get back there, even though the drive from Seattle was long.

Black Rock is an absolutely gem of a boutique contemporary resort hidden off the main drag of Ucluelet by the ocean within short driving distance to the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.

It's secluded location offers dramatic and gorgeous view of the Pacific waves pounding on the black volcanic rocks around the bay and the surge channel.  The hotel has a restaurant, a lounge, a wine cellar, a small ballroom, a plunge pool and a hot tub.

The best feature of the hotel for me was the room we had.  The appointment was clean-lined with a rich and warm colour scheme.  Our balcony has an awesome view of both the ocean and the forest.  The window opens both sideway and inward.  The feature I love most is the service opening above the headboard and standalone 2-person soaker tub.  You can enjoy the view outside or your favourite shows on the flatscreen TV above the fireplace in the room while taking a bath after spending a day on the beach or hiking on the trails in the national park.  After a hot bath, you can hop into the extremely spacious slate-tiled shower with a rain shower head to cool off

Our room was also equipped with a DVD player and a smaller kitchen with conventional / microwave oven and a small fridge complete with cutlery and other utensils for making your own late night snacks.

The regular rate is over $300 / night but it is a perfect place for a special occasion.

My girlfriend and I came to the Black Rock for a romantic weekend away, and it was anything but!  I can't recommend this place to anyone.  Below is (a paraphrased version of) the email I sent to the manager, after she emailed me to ask how our stay was.

    1) First of all, there was the problem with our check-in.  The front desk was very rude to us, calling our room and demanding that we come immediately to provide a credit card for our stay (my card had become demagnetized and was not working when I checked in).  We were staying in a cabin suite separate from the main building, and had already paid for our first nights stay (booked online), and were going to be coming to the main building in about an hour for our dinner reservation at Fetch.  Despite this, and the fact that it was pouring rain outside, the gentleman at the front desk said he could not allow us to stay in our room unless we immediately came to the front desk and provided a valid credit card.  He said this was hotel policy, and if this is true, your management team seriously needs to rethink this policy - especially since many of the rooms are not connected to the main building.  Also, if it was so important, he should have asked me to provide the valid card at check-in, which he didn't.  Nor did he ask us for our card when he was booking our dinner reservation after we finished eating lunch at Fetch.

    2) This brings me to the problems with Fetch.  We ate lunch at Fetch as soon as we arrived, but we were left standing at the front waiting for a table for about 15 minutes before anyone even ACKNOWLEDGED us.  There were also about 6-8 other people waiting behind us, and servers kept coming in and out of the restaurant, but no one even stopped to ask if any of us had been helped or if we would like a table.  We didn't have any other options, so we just waited...finally a hostess spoke with us after about 15 minutes, then we had to wait another 20 minutes for a table (which is fine).  But after sitting down to order, we noticed there were no vegetarian options listed on the lunch menu.  The waitress was able to get the kitchen to make something vegetarian...but being on the west-coast of BC with a large vegetarian population, we were shocked to find no options on the menu for those of us who don't eat fish or meat.  This is the first time we have experienced this in any restaurant, anywhere.  Then, when I ordered my beer (a Granville Island Winter Ale) the waitress came back to tell me it was not available.  This is a seasonal winter beer, so I was surprised they already had it in stock...but then I realized your menu must have not been updated since last winter.

    3) The parking situation at Blackrock is just atrocious, especially considering how often it rains on the westcoast of the island.  The parking spaces are no where near the residences.  We were in a detached cabin type room, and there was only 1 parking space between 4 units.

    4) The cabin itself is just very poorly built.  The first room we were in didn't have any heat in the bathroom, which made the tiles ice cold.  I called the front desk to figure out how to turn on the heated floors, but when they sent someone from maintenance he just said, "Oh, I guess they forgot to install them in this room."  We were later moved to the suite next door (as an apologetic measure from how we were treated at check-in), and although that room had the heated floors installed, they didn't work properly at all.  There was about a 3 square foot area in the bathroom that got warm, but the rest of the tile was ice cold.  Also, the workmanship in the rooms and the bathroom was extremely bad.  Tiles were crooked, grout was sloppy, the faucet was loose and not properly secured, the cabinets in the kitchen didn't close properly.  Also, our fireplace wasn't working until maintenance came to turn on the pilot light.  And then, the sound on our TV stopped working.  I think this was related to the fireplace.  The Samsung sound bars do not work well under very hot conditions, so having the TV located right above the fireplace is a bad idea.  The next day, we just left the fireplace turned off so that the TV would continue working (but it would be nice not to compromise one for the other).

    5) Then finally, on our second night stay, there was a crazy party going on in the suite above us.  We spoke to one of the partiers at around 10pm, she said there were about 12 people up there.  They said they would keep it down...but it was very noisy until about midnight or so.  I know this isn't a problem specific to the hotel, but it made our second night stay particularly uncomfortable.

Overall, our experience at Blackrock was really one of the worst we have ever had.  We stay at a lot of 4 and 5 star hotels and resorts, and Blackrock felt more like a $79 Best Western, with poor service.

Really terrific four days.  Wonderful views and inlet.  Rooms clean and well stocked - great to have a dishwasher and washer/drier on vacation.  Staff very helpful.  Restaurant good but not great.  A real break.

Good place for seafood in Ucluelet, but the dishes were a wee bit overcooked than our requests.  Amazing view of the ocean from the dining area.  Skip dessert and enjoy a glass of the local ice wine.
