This is one of our favourite local places and one that immediately comes to mind when I'm craving beef. They really do steak right. In addition, there's plenty of other choices on the menu as well.
The room is comfortable and warm without being too intimate. There are lots of tables and booths available. It's easy for them to accommodate larger groups. Reservations are advisable, especially on weekends during the tourist season when I've seen the place full, including the attractive fair weather patio.
The front of the house is quite talented; our visits have always had excellent service.
One of the best things about the Black Iron is the wine list. It features plenty of excellent BC wines and there is quite a bit of vintage depth. There are plenty of older wines that are difficult to come by.
Our last visit was for lunch. The Black Iron isn't usually open for lunch but during the holidays they created a special buffet. I usually shy away from buffets. They seem like a clearing house for stuff you can't sell elsewhere. Not so at the Black Iron. Everything was attractive and prepared with care. Fresh roast turkey and prime rib were the main choices and there was an assortment of vegetables and salad fixings to fill out your plate. We had our kid with us; he loved the food and they actually charged him a lesser rate which I thought was a good move. So many other buffets forget to do this. Dessert, a nice torte or cheesecake, was included. Word must have spread about the good value; the room was half full on a weekday in a pretty sleepy town. Our bill was $57 for three buffets, two glasses of beer and a soda.
