I LOVE PERSONAL SIZED CAKES.
My girl friend took me here because I'm an aficionado of all things dessert. As a frequent traveler to my motherland, Taiwan, I've grown accustomed to the sight of cute pastries that are delicious and beautifully constructed. Needless to say, I was taken aback by the quality and variety offered at Black Hound, and now want their cakes served at every future celebration I have.
I literally inquired the employee at the register about every single cake they had on display. And he answered my questions without missing a beat: "This cake is _____. This cake is made from _______. This cake is seasonal because ______."
I would personally recommend the chocolate cakes. The chocolate is so decadent, there's no way you can finish it yourself. So don't worry about pigging out.
I love this place so much, I plan on ordering a bunch of mini cakes to be served at my girl friend's bridal shower in 2 weeks. Looking forward to it, and I'll update this review with some pictures of the mini cakes.
PS. They have free cake samples. So take your time to decide what you eventually want.
PPS. Sign up for their e-mail newsletter! They offer special deals on holidays! -

During a bachelorette party, I was introduced to this bakery by a friend and let me just say that this place has the cutest cakes hands down. I fell in love as soon as I saw the display of mini cakes outside the window. It's a very small bakery but you'll know where it is by couple of people fawning over the display and taking pictures of the cakes from the outside.
There is only one in New York City and a mall that is like 2 hrs away in New Jersey so it gives it a sense of uniqueness. "Specialness"
I went crazy and bought four mini cakes - the gift box cake (which had chocolate on the outside and layers of hazelnut and white cake with vanilla pastry cream and whipped cream in the inside), danielle's cake (if i'm not mistaken, had a white chocolate buttercream and tiny marzipan ballet shoes on the outside, and alternating layers of cake and whipped cream on the inside), the coconut cake infused with a lemon flavor, and the strawberries and cream cake.
I tasted all four and loved them ALL which is pretty rare, being picky with pastries. The strawberries and cream cake was the lightest of them all and, in my opinion, the best out of the four. Very light and just the right amount of buttercream, strawberries and cake to balance everything out. The coconut cake was good but it was overshadowed by the other three.
I gave two to my mother for mother's day and she practically inhaled them which is also rare because she's not a big fan of anything sweet.
The mini cakes all range, lets say, from around $6 - 8, if I'm not mistaken.
Overall a great experience and I know I'll be back! -

BEWARE!!! Doesn't even deserve a star.
Order a cake online for the first time. They delivered the cake, but just left it outside the garage door, not the front door ( and did not bother to ring the bell door twice. It was a surprise gift for my parent's anniversary, so I wanted them to receive it without me telling them in advance). It was a snowy day, so the cake was covered by snow. My parents found the cake the next day when they were going to shovel the snow. My parents called me, thanked me and let me know what happened. I called the customer service. Cust service blamed me for not telling my parents and that the delivery courier was not responsible for ringing the bell twice. I demanded for a substitute cake delivered to my parents, and they charged me half price and delivery fee (which I think ridiculous). But I paid anyway since I promised my parents that I would send another cake. However, I found out my parents called the Blackhound's Cust Service themselves and told the lady (the head of cust service, and the same lady who has been talking and blamed me earlier) what happened, and she said that she would take care of it.
I was SHOCKED and WTF, I paid for it and she made it sound like the company would take care of the issue.
I called the lady and asked her why she made it sound like the second cake was free when I actually had to pay for it, and she said that the reason was she should not disclose our conversation to other clients. What a BULL****.
It was the first and LAST TIME I EVER ORDER FROM BLACK HOUND.
NEVER EVER DECEIVED BY THIS PLACE, NO MATTER HOW GOOD THEIR CAKES TASTE.
I found out from other reviews that I wasn't the only one that had bad experience with this company. Another lesson learned. I should have read the reviews before ordering. -

I love this place. I have kept it a secret from my friends for a while after discovering it years ago, but after much thought, i finally brought a friend over. (I also didn't realize that I haven't reviewed this place yet on yelp!). This is also my go-to place for surprise mini-cakes! They do an amazing job with selection and you can definitely try their larger cakes at an affordable price by purchasing their smaller option!
The smaller cake can be shared between two people, but if you're a dessert-fan like I am, you would attempt to devour the whole thing yourself! (as others have mentioned these cakes can range between $6-8 each which is very affordable for the craftsmanship involved). They have a nice assortment at the window, but when you enter the store, there are also more selections in the display.
There are also coffee options available, but I have not purchased drinks coming in because I would be too mesmerized by the artistically crafted cakes and mini-cakes.
My friend and I are definitely fans of this place and would come back again and again. If you're looking for delicious and affordable dessert options or a great present, this is definitely the place to stop by! the staff is also really friendly and there are samples too!
So whether you are going in for cookies, cakes, or some other pastry that they sell, you would not be disappointed. This place always brings a smile to my face... and I'm already thinking of the next chance I'll have to stop by again! -

Dangerous, dangerous place to pass by on my walk home every day.
I just can't resist going in to look at their perfect looking cakes and the samples. Of course I feel too guilty/cheap just taking samples and not buying anything.
Update - I do love their bee cake - but in small doses.
Don't usually like chocolate cake with raspberry filling but theirs was delicious. This is a less dry cake and now made me a fan of black forest type cakes. Just what I needed.
Lemon cake with cream filling- not too good.

Review from Suanne L.
Blackhound Bakery is down to earth, artisanal confections and cakes for the eye and palate. The decor is simple, drawing attention immediately to the wares for sale. Its clean, impeccable, quiet, and cozy in here, which tends to make me stay longer than I would in a typical bakery.
Blackhound sells large cakes, mini single serving cakes, pastries, truffles, cookies, crackers, and nut mixes. The confections feel very European (more French than Italian) and are sweet, heavy on the butter, but petite in portion. I love the tiny cakes in the window (particularly anything with chocolate mousse) and their shortbread based cookies are phenomenal (love the jam sandwich cookies). Blackhound is always a special treat for me. They also have an online site and ship nationwide.
Service is always cordial and sweet. They have made good recomendations for me in the past. Prices are fair for the quality, service, and presentation. -

Review from Alessa M.
Came in last night after having dinner. We took the bus down (it was cold hush! I was not going to walk it!) because I had heard about this place on Yelp and was curious. I have to say I'm so so happy we made the trip because Black Hound easily has become the place i'm going to go for birthdays from now and forever more. It's a tiny little shop easy to walk right by if your not paying attention but if you are you'll notice the mini-cakes at the window. Your mouth will begin to water and then the hard part...Which Cake do you chose?
Andres chose the Lemon Daisy Cake while I chose the Chocolate Chocolate Mousse Cake. We were told to let the mini cakes sit in room temperature for about 30 mins for the best taste. So we opted to go back to Brooklyn and eat them when we got to his place. When we finally did I was greeted with a plethora of flavors and textures with my Mousse cake. I did try the Lemon cake with I liked the detail in the design was cute (come on little daisies? how cute) My mousse cake had a white chocolate hard shell with polka dots (chocolate). At first it was a bit tough to crack the shell but once in boy was it a rich in flavor. The cake wasn't dried out. As described on the site here's whats inside:
"One layer of bittersweet chocolate mousse, one layer of milk chocolate mousse, and three thin layers of chocolate butter cake blanketed in white chocolate buttercream and decorated with bittersweet and milk chocolate polka dots."
So you can see why I fell in love right? The mini cakes are $7.50 each and are big enough in portions that you wouldn't need to buy someone a huge ass cake (of course if its a giant party by all means) the mini cake here would be just enough. I will continue to come back here because i'm now determined to try every single mini cake sold.Listed in: Best Eats...., Make it a Date!, Dessert Bliss

I had my boyfriend pick up a mini busy bee cake over the weekend because of the amazing yelp reviews. I wasn't disappointed! I really love the taste of almond and I just wish it had been featured a little more in the overall taste. Though the chocolate is good, it almost overpowers the almond taste rather than complement it. But, no worries. I'm still a fan and will definitely be back to try out some of their other cakes.

Mini Cakes Galore!
The showcase of goodies in front of their store were calling my name. Each cake, big or small is well decorated and absolutely adorable.
Upon entering, we noticed that they sold other baked goods as well (ie. small pies, cookies, truffles, etc). They also offer free samples towards the back of the store.
We decided to try 2 mini cakes, the Busy Bee Cake and Gingerbread Cake. The gentleman who helped us was quick to wrap up our order and kind. He informed us that the cakes needed to thaw for about 45 mins before consumption.
The Busy Bee Cake is Black Hounds Signature Cake. It's layers and layers of deliciousness. After taking my first bite, I knew that quality ingredients were used to prepare this lovely cake. It's covered with a thin layer of marzipan and bittersweet chocolate icing. The marzipan was slightly sweet and had a nice almond flavor. The thin layers of chocolate and almond butter cake were light, moist, flavorful, and not too sweet. The bittersweet chocolate mousse and marzipan in between each layer of cake was smooth and slightly sweet. The little bees on top are too cute. The body is made of marzipan with a drizzle of chocolate and the wings are made with almond petals.
The Gingerbread Cake was my absolute favorite. The thin layer of spiced cream cheese icing was smooth, creamy, and light. The gingerbread cake was flavorful and moist. The cool pastry cream, thinly sliced poached apples and pears go well with the slightly spicy cake and icing. The marzipan gingerbread man on top was creamy. This cake is so smooth and melts in your mouth.
At around $7.50 for a mini cake, they are leaning towards the pricier side. However, they are made with quality ingredients and are big in flavor.
With so many different types of cakes offered at Black Hound, there is something in here for everyone. -

I just love their Pear Almond Cake.
Creamy and flavorful.
Each cake is so special, so detailed.
I really liked everything I had from here.
A few years ago, I would have said no to this place. Too sweet for my Japanese tongue. Now that I am used to the taste of yummy cakes of the world...this is one of my favorite places to visit. -
Review from Jess S.
This is my go-to place for cake. Its always a savory, incredible experience, and they are perfectly portioned. Much thought is put into the texture, flavors, ingredients.
Everything Ive tried is excellent. This is a mainstay in all celebrations between the bf and I -- Save these little cakes for those you really, really love. -
Review from Erica S.
I have been here a few times and have mixed feelings about their cakes.
Pros:
- The size of the cakes (mini) are great for one or for two! The small size makes it so that you can get a couple to try and share!
- The peppermint cake is to die for! The butter cream is a bit heavy but if you like peppermint + chocolate + cream this is perfect for you!
Cons:
- Although I really liked the peppermint cake, I tried their bumblebee cake before (which was recommended by the staff) and did not enjoy it at all.
Overall, I think the cakes are pretty hit or miss depending on your own tastes so choose wisely!!! -

I have walked by this place many times..and finally paid a visit! After looking through everything that they have...i ended up with snow ball? and Chocolate Chocolate Mousse?..
All of the cakes or desserts looked so pretty and tasty..and i was excited to try the ones that i bought when i got home! Needless to say..the desserts were good..but i felt it was a bit on the heavy side. It was a bit too sweet for my taste..and it wasnt enjoyable to eat..=/ -

Second time I tried the Almond Apricot Cake-$7.50.
I much prefer the Almond Apricot cake over the Chocolate Grand Marnier cake.
The apricot jam is delicious against the yellow cake. The butter cream tasted, felt too hard and reminded me of ....butter. Maybe it was too cold?
But overall the Almond Apricot Cake is DELICIOUS.
Just still overly pricey for a cake.Listed in: Don't believe all the hype!

Love the treats here. They often have some samples of a popluar cakes and I have never been disappointed. I especially like the fruit tarts, but the Bee Cake and the Valrhona Chocolate cake are amazing too.
They are pricey. I think that their smaller cakes are good for two, but bigger eaters might want the whole thing to themselves. -
Review from Sasha G.
Here's what you need to know about Black Hound:
1. The busy bee cake (signature cake) is the BOMB. Seriously. Marzipan, chocolate, hazelnut, almond heaven. It also doesn't help that it's absolutely adorable, decorated with little marzipan and roasted almond bees. Call me a kid but who doesn't love a cute tasty cake? Pshh.
2. They usually offer free samples of something. Yes, I'm guilty of stopping by just for a sample or two to satisfy a quick and miniscule sweet-tooth craving. If you stop by just for a sample, I suggest you don't look at their very tempting and glistening glass case- you WILL be tempted to buy something.
3. Stay away from their buttercream cakes because just as the name of the frosting suggests- they taste purely like butter and sugar. Hey- if you're a Paula Deen and butter is yo' thing... go for it. I however, tried their Coconut cake (delicately decorated with sweetened coconut flakes) and felt like I was eating textured butter. Just plain gross. Just thinking of it brings back that greasy, buttery taste in my mouth. Eek.
I love that this place sells large cakes and miniature ones as well. It's nice to get a miniature cake and share with your honey or 2 friends. They have a variety of cookies and brownies too. I've never tried but go for it!Listed in: Fat, fat, fat baby., Satisfying Sweets

Usually I'm not a fan of American cakes, since I prefer their Asian counterparts which are less sweet and lighter. However, I love Black Hound New York cakes. Their Busy Bee Cake is amazingly dense, with a smooth chocolate and Marzipan taste. The cake is moist and complex, and the bees on top are adorable, and their nuttiness really compliments the sweetness of the chocolate.
Note: Try their $5 miniature pies! -

Review from Tony T.

This is a temporary review for now.. it was my first time here and I only tried one of their cakes so I won't say that this is my real opinion but more like my first impressions.
FOOD:
We ordered their Apricot Almond Cake... we also had a sample of their fudge. The cake was made with Almond Cake, Apricot Preserve Spread, Almonds, and covered with a white chocolate spread.
This cake was good but it had its down points. The cake was a dense cake... it wasn't really fluffy and airy like I usually like it. Of course that is my personal preference. With that in mind... the cake was very flavorful with almond. The Apricot spread which was put between the cake layers and on the top of the cake was way too sweet. It gave the cake a very nice tart taste but then the sugar rush hits you and it sort of spoils it for you. That along with the white chocolate which also seem to come out a little too sweet for me. All together the cake almost tasted like separate components. You tasted the cake.. then you taste the apricot... then you taste the white chocolate...you should be getting the combinations of flavors working together and complimenting each other. Either than the flavors were there and it tasted great... but it as a cake in a whole.. it didn't work well together in a bite.
We also were able to try their fudge when I was picking up the cake. NOW THAT WAS FRIGGIN' DELICIOUS! I don't really know what kind of fudge it was... It tasted like a nice hint of hazelnut and chocolate (sort of like a more richer version of Nutella)... I definitely will be coming back to investigate more.
PRICE:
The prices were quite fair. Individual cakes average around $7.50... while small cakes (serves about 6-8 people) averaged around $30.00 depending on what cake you got. This is quite fair and they gave you a lot of choices of cakes which is definitely a plus.
DECOR/ SERVICE:
This place is really cute. Small and Modern looking. There's no room to sit and dine, but this place is straight up a cake place... so you don't expect to sit and dine.
The people there is very nice and gives you great attention. They seem to know quite a lot about the cakes and how to serve it... so that's always a plus.
OVERALL:
Well I'm still coming back because their other cakes looks really good and that sample of fudge really sold me to come back and try their other cakes. I can't say I hated the cake... I did wish the flavors in the Almond Cake really worked together more rather than doing its own thing. But I'll definitely update you on my next visit! -
Review from Althea A.
I've been a customer at Black Hound for years and years and years... let's just say, much longer than any of the employees have been working there. It started 'cause I used to live right by the place, and it was a convenient place to pick up gifts for my dad, who's a fan of fancy truffles. And oh, their chocolate truffles here are heavenly!
Then, one year, I got my dad Something Else for... what was it? Birthday, Father's Day, Xmas? And well, he TRIED not to act disappointed, but he said something like, "where are my truffles?!"
So... since then, it's truffles. From Black Hound.
I don't mind going in and only buying a gift, either, because they always have free samples of some kind of cake, so it's like a treat for me as well. And yeah, their cakes are pretty excellent, as well.
Another big plus - they're open late! (10pm - 11:30pm, depending on the day) -
Review from Nancy P.
Yummmy, we got the Triple Chocolate Mousse Cake and it was awesome. Everything looked so pretty on display and the mousse cake we had just melted in our mouths. It was creamy and not too sweet. The cake definitely started leaning and mushing since we couldn't finish it completely at first but it was just as tasty later.
A lot of variety of cakes, I'm sure I have to come back and try more. -

Recommended for all situations.
- Picnic at the park? Desserts can be the 1st course to avoid melting. Actually, it could be the only meal.
- Piss someone off? A box of truffles could turn a frown into a smile.
- Want to keep someone pissed off? Eat box of goodies in front of them without offering. Savor every bite. Mmmmmm. Watch out for lurking evil eyes.
- Having a bad day? Browse and see what flavor will change your mood. Queen D cake always does it for me. Little bit of hazelnut butter cake, touch of raspberry preserves, spread of mocha buttercream finished off with crushed hazelnuts. My favorite!
- Celebrating birthday but can't decide what to cake to get? Do not panic. Black Hound has a lot of options. Get a number of small ones and It'll make any birthday girl happy. It made me happy :) -

Oh no. With all the rave reviews, I was expecting to adore Black Hound. But, alas, my experience has been hit or miss.
The display of the desserts is lovely and the service knowledgeable. The staff even gives you instructions for maximizing your enjoyment of the desserts. For example, for some of the cakes they recommend leaving the dessert at room temperature for 45 minutes before consuming.
Unfortunately, only some of the cakes have been truly satisfying. Other desserts, such as the brownie have been dry.
With more than three unsatisfying desserts, there is no way I can give Black Hound a score higher than three stars. -

I came upon this bakery by accident after a yoga class with friends, and I couldn't take my eyes off of those cakes! Each and one of those cakes looked so beautiful; like a work of art!
Tried their signature busy bee mini cake and it was really delicious! The texture was really nice, creamy, and soft. It definitely melts in your mouth. The German Chocolate mini cake was ok. Will try the others soon!
Downside is that you have to wait 30 minutes to eat the busy bee mini cake. If you are dying to try the mini cakes so badly, 30 minutes seems like an eternity! haha :) -

This place is the most amazing bakery!! They make tiny cake versions of their larger cakes. So if you're craving to try 5 flavors, you can save yourself the guilt of buying a huge regular-sized cake and get tiny beautifully decorated cakes at about $6-$8 each.
Absolutely love how they execute their decorating, especially when they use small marzipan flowers as a final touch. So Delicious!!!
Oh and btw, they also have samplings near the counter =) -

My latest birthday cake acquisition, and I had something to worry about. We ate dinner at Prime Meats, and the meal was so amazing I was worried the birthday boy and the rest of the table wouldn't find my desert offering up to par. Somehow they saved room after all that perfectly cooked stead, and not a person at the table was disappointed.
I got the bumble bee cake, and it was a wonderful addition to the meal. Black Hound staff were insistent on the phone and in person that I not serve the cake more or less than about an hour and a half unrefrigerated after picking it up, which I'll just accept as compounding the delectable affair. When we polished it off the next day, the cake hadn't lost much steam. When I run out of places to go, this is one I'll come back to. -

Lovely cakes! I bought a variety to sample for my mother's birthday. My favorites are: the ebony and ivory cake, the pear and almond cake, and the orange cheesecake. None of the cakes are overly sweet and not too heavy. The different flavors are always refreshing, so it's a great decadent dessert!

Don't have much to review here, but what I do know is Black Hound is awesome =)
My boyfriend and I recently visited NY for his birthday, and I did my Yelp research beforehand for some of the best bakeries in the city. We stopped here just before a late night cruise to pick up a little birthday cake for him. The place is small, but the cakes look delish! Picked a little cake, got to the register to pay, and the worker told us that the cake we had picked needed to be refrigerated or eaten immediately. Whoa! Glad he decided to tell us....that cake had to make it at least 2 hours before we could even think about eating it lol
The cake we picked did last better in the heat, but it melted a little before we got a chance to get to it. Still....great cake! Glad we went here. -

Black Hound is one of those places that is so enticing that I have to consciously drag myself away as I walk by. I feel guilty when I go in for samples and leave without buying anything! I've gotten both full-sized and miniature cakes from black hound, but I've yet to try any of their other delectables...I just might be addicted to their marzipan bees. Their selection is a bit pricey, but really, it's worth it. I've always found the staff to be pleasant and helpful, and I have never once had anything bad to say about their baked bits of heaven.
