Ahhhh I love this place!
One of the last few movie stores that aren't going bankrupt because they're fucking awesome! The people who work there actually love and have an intense knowledge of film. They also know to how to recommend films according to your likes and dislikes, not theirs, which is refreshing.
Also, to change it up, the films are categorized in interesting ways: by director. So if you know you enjoyed a film by a certain director, you know just where to look for more of the type.
Because they're independent and locally owned, they don't nickel-and-dime, and are open to bargains. I was desperate for a rental, but didn't have any cash on me. Bring them some popcorn and free movies passes (I worked at a theatre) in exchange for a film or 2! People have been known to exchange other, slightly less legal things as well.... gotta love it.
Few other fantastic tidbits:
- Out of this world selection, stuff you'd have a hard time finding elsewhere
- Super cute notes! On films the staff have a personal opinion about it, they'll put a post-it type note on the box displaying something interesting about their film with a little dash of their sarcastic humour

Unbeatable Pricing:
Prepaid movie cards: $35.00 will net you 10 rentals! That's a potential savings of $20.
Sunday to Thursday: 2 films (one new release, one old title or two old films) - $7.00.
Wednesday - 5 rentals for $8.00! My personal fav!!
Thurs - Bring in a non-perishable food item in exchange for a rental
Regularly $5.50 for a new release - good for 2 days
and $4.50 for an old catalogue title - good for a week. -

I live in the middle of downtown, but I drive to Black Dog rather than use VOD. That is, when I want to watch something that's offered on VOD, which isn't often. There's nothing like browsing the shelves of a local, independently-owned video store and discovering some totally off-the-wall film that you never would have consciously looked for . And of course there's the benefit of having hardcore movie geeks behind the counter to pump for information. I am going to do everything I can to support Black Dog so that the independent video store does not go the way of the dinosaur, which would be a painful loss for this city!

Black Dog is great because it's locally-owned, and it carries a wide variety of indie and cult favourites. If you want to impress your friends with your movie knowledge and ever thought of becoming a movie connoisseur-snob, you should definitely check this place out. I don't know about you, but I always try to fool my friends into thinking that I am a genius, and that I would kick butt in any sort of pop culture quiz. I am also the person most likely to fall asleep during a movie, so I guess that tells you how good of a liar I am.
The staff at Black Dog are very knowledgeable about movies that they carry and can recommend some great flicks. They may also take a few jabs at you if you rent a less than stellar B movie, but all in good fun. There's a little bowl of dog treats for which my not-so-little pup . likes to beg for, and the staff always appease him with one or two of them, and rub his pig-like belly. Because Black Dog is a small locally-owned business, they don't have the giant selection that other movie stores have, but remember, its quality over quantity, and if we really want to rent old movies that were really mainstream, there's a Crotch-buster on Main Street. -

Owned and staffed by lovers of film. Half the fun of renting from here is having a in depth chat about the movie you selected. The owner is both pleasantly sarcastic and helpful. Rentals are the cheapest around ($5) for either a blu-ray or DVD.
Weekend soundtrack is either Nick Cage or David Bowie. -

Full disclosure: Part of my love for this place is they're willing to stock things so local and indie they have one of my films on file! But, otherwise I love and respect Black Dog simply for having the most interesting selection on the Northern part of The Drive.
It really comes down to Applause or Black Dog for most people and, while few live up south by Applause, many flock to Black Dog. Since its days as the Celluloid Drugstore, this location focuses hard on finding some of the newer indie fare and stranger movies available to the public on DVD.
Sure, it can't compete with bigger places like Happy Bats or Videomatica, but if you're strolling down the drive and want a bigger name older film, or a hip strange new one , you're unlikely to find a selection more pleasant or a staff as nice as at Black Dog. -

They waved all of our late fees when I was in labour for 48 hours. Nuff said.

This lean little outfit does a good job of stacking acclaimed titles on the shelves. They organize films by country, director, and genre. The personalized post-its (This film is funny! FUNNY!) on the dvd sleeves are helpful for roulette with unknown films. It's kind of the Critereon collection with post-it notes, more than a cute Scarecrow.

Oh, how I miss renting from this place. Since moving to downtown, I have yet to find a suitable replacement for my beloved Black Dog Video (other than the rental services of iTunes, that is). They specialize in all things none mainstream, whether they be independently produced, foreign, documentary, queer or cult. They'll have it. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, too.
