....As good as it gets when it comes to dvd rentals. Old and new; tv shows, movies, documentaries.

Black Dog Video is a great local video rental store that carries a well-edited selection of films for your viewing pleasure. It definitely caters to the hipster, film snob crowd with its selection of cult, independent, and organized-by-director offerings. My personal favourite area is the stand-up comedy shelf near the entrance to the store; the selection here is so good that I could pretty much pick any video at random and it would be a good choice. For the indecisive, there is a "staff picks" section at the front which always has some interesting choices.
Come here on a Wednesday and pick up five movies (excluding new releases) for one week for a meagre $8. Also, don't forget to bring your stamp-card, as the 11th rental is free. -

Black Dog video is my local video rental place. I like the small home made feel of the place. You would have guess with a name like Black Dog, it is a dog friendly place. You can find treats on the counter.
It isn't call Black Dog for no reason. They specialized in foreign, independent, documentaries, cult, etc. You can still find the blockbuster and DVD TV series. They haven't yet made a massive investment to blue-ray though.
I like the place. I enjoy going there. It is open and their rack are made out of wood. It is great compared to the prefabricated chain who tried to sell you more chips and tostitos than trying to get you the right movie.
I would go for a 5 stars, but the staff can be sometime a bit dry. But I think it is part of their charm.... and it is The Drive. They are very knowledgeable which is a plus over the chain.Listed in: The Sacro-Saint Drive

Black Dog Video is a great alternative video rental shop that carries a fantastic selection of your favourite foreign, Independent, Canadian, Cult, Queer and well...just about every other genre of film. It's well organized and easy to find what you're looking for without too much effort, and the staff there is knowledgeable without being overly pretentious. And, of course, it's nice to support the small local shop and not their larger, more corporate competition. There's also a location on Cambie Street at 3451 Cambie.
