Review from Jenn G.
The Bistro is what I'd call the more affordable sister of Le Beaujolais, a long-standing Banff fine dining establishment that's won a slew of awards (including Wine Spectator).
While more affordable, the food and wine is still well done and well thought out. Gracious service, an interesting selection of wines (both bottles and by the glass) and beer, a perfect baguette, and our meals - bison burger for him, moules provencales for me - were both terrific. Neither of us ordered the daily specials, which range from cassoulet to bouillabaisse to other French classics.
With glorious views to complement the food, it's a must-try. -

This was our Banff getaway together dinner and I felt disappointed by the food, ambiance and general experience.
The bistro is not separate from Le Beaujolais. It looks like a train car and only seats I think eight to ten tables. Our server was sweet but extremely nervous and a bit clueless.
My French onion soup was burnt the first time so I had to send it back. The second time my soup was bland. It tasted like cardboard. The beef tartar was not to bad. The mussels were very over cooked and came with maybe half a tablespoon of juice. Colin's escargot had pastries on top of each snail. Still it was ok. His meat platter was a little over cooked but he thought it was ok. His lentils under the meat had so much butter and grease it was dripping. I ordered creme brûlée and chocolate mousse. The mousse was ok. The creme brûlée was curdled and in a ramekin three times the size I have ever seen. The whole dinner was at best mediocre.
It's a shame because I was excited to have dinner here. -

We absolutely enjoyed our meal at the Bistro Cafe. The special of the day happened to be seafood crepes, which were incredibly rich and delicious. Perhaps the high altitude improves one's appetite, but the baguette was perfect and I forced myself to finish only half of the heartwarming potato and leek soup to make room for the entree. We sat by the windows and had a great view of the nearby mountains (I think Mt. Rundle from his point of view and Sulphur Mountain to our side). Service was elegantly provided.

This was such a disappointment. The food was so bland! My husband and I and my sister all conclude that we could have had a better meal at any cafeteria or deli (minus the atmosphere). I can't believe they have all of those awards on the wall. It was still pretty pricey even though this is supposed to be the more affordable sister restaurant of the Beaujolais. We felt ripped off after leaving. If you don't want your evening ruined, don't go here.

We visited Banff for the first time and were looking forward to a wonderful dinner here based on previous reviews.
We passed by the restaurant the night before and asked about reservations and were told that we didn't need them for 2 people at the Bistro.
The night we went we were greeted by a gruffy looking man who sat us at a TERRIBLE table that looked hastily set up in the middle of the foyer in the main restaurant. When a woman came by to pour water (not a server) I asked to be seated in the Bistro which had 4 EMPTY tables for 2. Since we were seated very close to the reception area I watched another couple WITHOUT reservations come in after us and ask for a table for 2 in the Bistro and they were seated right away. The woman I asked about changing tables told me that the empty tables were for people who had reservations (or as she pronounced it, reserwaytions so I am guessing she was NOT French). When I mentioned the couple that the man had just seated she just looked at me and said I must have misheard.
With that I made sure to take a sip of water and my husband and I stood up and walked out. Without a doubt it was the rudest service I have ever experienced. We dine out 3-4 times a month at upscale restaurants and have never had an experience like this.
The food may be good but service is as much a part of the experience as what is served. STAY AWAY -

Ate dinner here twice during our visit to Banff. Both times I had the special and my partner had PEI mussels. Both meals were really good. Service was very friendly. Nice portions. Unpretentious and very good value.
