Review from Rebecca P.
The ambiance was perfect for a mini-date; beautiful decor and soft lighting. We both really enjoyed all of our dishes. We ordered the oysters, the cheese plate (a bit on the small side), the crab and shrimp avacado salad (yum, amazing!), an perfectly seasoned and crisp roasted chicken dish, french onion soup and truffle fries. I just wish we had saved room for dessert! We would certainly go back.

I would rate 4 stars for the ambiance... Definitely nice!
I wish I was there on a date.
The service was good and the seating nice as well.
In regards to the food - unfortunately - I was not so satisfied.
The cheese appetizer plate was good, no issues.
The main course, a white fish, suggested by the waiter was nothing special.
Actually, was pretty blend and no taste, except for the sauce.
That came as a disappointment as I was looking forward for some good fish.
Maybe it was just a bad choice or wrong evening.
I would go again, and hopefully I will be satisfied, as the place deserves for sure. -

I've never spent $100 on lunch for two...
Food was really great and cheeses were nice. One we ordered was different than one that came out... But whatever, we aren't too picky when it comes to delicious cheeses! Wine was decent... Expected better for the price though. -

Ok, before I go any further, I should say that my glass was empty most of the night. Not too thrilled about that.
However, the steak was delicious, and the creme brulee was the perfect ending to a fully satisfying meal.
Now where's that diet coke??? -
Review from Lesa D.
It's been a while since I've been to a french restaurant - this is a bistro, as opposed to a more formal restaurant. And on first approach, it has a nightclub feel. But the decor is wonderful, patio lovely, and the music well-chosen for the atmosphere. It's was a bit noisy, but it's a bistro.
The grilled romaine was wonderful, it tasted as fabulous as it was presented. We then ordered steamed mussels and bouillabaisse; both incredible. Dessert: the chocolate pate. I'll be dreaming about it for a long time.
Only small downsides - the mussels were the best we've ever had, but there were too many still closed ones. Also, the bread wasn't that interesting. I think I've become quite a bread snob, and this just didn't send me. -

Great food. Great service. Was easy to make reservations using OpenTable. It was a very satisfying, unique, and delightful meal during our Victoria , BC trip.

Review from Chanele B.
Bon Rouge was on our list of "must visits" when we returned to Victoria, and now I more or less wish it had not been. The magic of the first visit was tainted by completely inept service. We had to wait an extra length of time for everything. When my entree arrived, I didn't have any silverware because it had been cleared with my salad. Instead of immediately grabbing me some, the server wandered around a bit, running other errands, all the while, my food got colder. It wasn't bad service on the epic level, but repeated lengths that should not have been there. If a server thinks a tip is based off the last impression, he didn't even seem to care about that, as we had a terrible time getting the bill paid.
To add extra insult, the food was nowhere near the quality of the first visit. I ordered off the prix fixe menu (steak frites) this time, and the dish was only average. The frites were too salty, and the steak was nothing to remember. It was particularly frustrating to see Prime Steakhouse just across the street. The prix fixe was a nice idea in theory - It was nice to have a salad and dessert - but I regret not ordering off the regular menu.
Perhaps it would get "A-OK" if I had not experienced before and seen a dramatic difference in everything from the service to the ambiance to the food. True, it is busier in the summer, but the staff should be able to accommodate.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Amy X.
We were drawn by the advertised prix fixe menu: $29 for 3 courses. First of all, that's outdated. It's actually $32. And the prix fixe menu is not a good deal unless you choose steak-frites and sauteed prawns (if you get a side salad - $5, bouillabaisse - $16, and dessert - $8, you're paying $32 for what's actually a $29 meal. So do some quick addition if you're considering the prix fixe options!
The bouillabaisse sounded good, so I ended up just ordering that on its own. The broth was delicious, but the actual seafood wasn't that flavorful. Hubby's salmon, on the other hand, was excellent, as was the accompanying kale and lentil cake (and we usually don't like lentils).
The prices are reasonable considering the generous portions, which are not the norm at French restaurants. I was especially pleased with the $13 for 4 large chunks of cheese, attractively presented with toasted baguette slices, mixed nuts, and this delightful spiced cherry jam.
Their cocktails all sounded very appealing. The Brigitte Bardot (their twist on the Cosmopolitan) is good, especially if you don't like a strong alcohol taste but do like pomegranate.
The patio is nice... if only it had been warmer, I think we would have enjoyed eating out there. -

I wish I could high-five all of the Yelpers who reviewed this place, because it was thumbs-up, body-melting, smack-my-boyfriend-in-the-teeth delicious.
Bon Rouge is a spacious restaurant with an intimate atmosphere. The tables are close together and the din of diners can sometimes get loud. There's a full bar and the night we went, television sets were playing old movies.
The wait staff is very friendly and attentive. Our server was wonderful - he was happy to make suggestions on drinks and beer on tap for my boyfriend, and he was never too rushed or too busy (although he was very, very busy) to check in on us or provide us with our requests.
We were fortunate enough to go in February for my birthday, during Dine Out Victoria (well, the name of Victoria's equivalent to Dine Out Vancouver). For the appetizer course I had their house salad, which was mixed greens, pea shoots and goat's cheese with a sherry vinagrette. It was incredible. We make our own version of it at home and it just makes me miss Bon Rouge all the more.
The entree I had was steak frites, which is, well, steak. It was delicious, and so were the fries. I opted for the classique sauce - I'm not a sauce kind of girl, but it was good, and there's really not much more I can comment on it beyond that. The entree my boyfriend had was lamb, and he loved it so much that the only time he talked to me was to tell me how great his meal was.
For dessert, I had the creme brulee. I would do unspeakable things just to have that dessert again, and frankly I'm a little sad that Bon Rouge is so far away from me.
Overall, it was a wonderful meal, and a great way to top off an awesome birthday weekend in Victoria. The next time we're in Victoria, we're definitely stopping by - and telling all of our friends as well. -
Review from Ken L.
My return visit to Bon Rouge didn't go as well as I hoped. The blackened ribeye and the escargot are no longer items on their new* menu. I had the $32 Prix Fixe plus an entree.
Appetizer: sauteed prawns instead of the side house salad. Four large shrimp with garlic sauce and baby tomatoes. Cooked perfectly and not too salty.
Entree: Steak Frites. An eight ounce, char grilled black angus New York strip loin with kenneback frites. I choose to go with their Bordelaise sauce, which is a red wine, shallot and peppercorn demi sauce. Great tasting steak @ medium rare as it was moist, juicy and tender.
La wife had the bouillabaisee. I am not a fan of bouillabaisee with tomatoey based sauce but this one had a lighter flavor that sets it apart from the ones I have had before.
Creme brulee for dessert...with a side of chocolately chocolate ball and a "spoon pushed" caramel decoration.
A strong meal but......... I wanted the blackened ribeye with the butter garlic escargot puff pastry just like my first time there. That didn't happen though. Chantal was our server and she was friendly and provided awesome service.

Review from Michelle W.
Wow. This place was delicious. For everyone who did not give this place a 5 star, you guys are retarded.
First of all, the place is BEAUTIFUL. It was a nice days so we sat on the patio which was decorated with tons of flowers and tables and oh it was just lovely. And our server was this young girl who was SO NICE. But onto the food...
We ordered the cheese plate which came with 4 cheeses; we picked the Spanish Manchego, Pacific Pepper, some sort of bleu cheese, and this cheese that I can't remember the name of, but was SO good and so creamy and perfectly aged and salted. They came on a little wooden board with some jelly (cinnamon, berry jelly, REALLY GOOD), some mixed nuts, and some toasted bread. The cheeses were all really good, but my only thing was that the bread was a little too toasted, too crispy, but I suppose some people like it that way? Otherwise it was delicious.
For my main dish I ordered the seared tuna with a poached egg and green salad. It came with two pieces of salmon, a poached egg, some butter lettuce, tiny bit of potato, red onion, and baby tomatoes. There was a vinegar and olive oil sauce drizzled over it too. It was so freaking good. Wow. Fresh, local ingredients. Really simple. Really good. My only thing was that the food was not quite hot and not quite cold, it was kind of warmish. I suppose that was because there was lettuce and tomatoes and onion, which are cold, along with potatoes, tuna, and the poached egg which were hot? I'm not sure. Also, I would have liked a bit more tuna, because it was just so fresh and so clean (yeah I'm funny).
We also ordered a crab ad ricotta cheese filled ravioli with sun-dried tomatoes in a wine and cream reduction sauce. It was also delicious. My only thing was that I could not really taste the crab; it was a little hidden under the ricotta. But overall, still delicious.
We had a great experience. It was delicious, beautiful, and very enjoyable. It cost around $49 ($13 for cheese, $17 for tuna, and $17 for ravioli). REALLY REALLY good :) -

The decor here is very nice and stylist. Outside patio is lovely with all the hanging flower baskets. We got inside seating right away. We had french onion, scallop and halibut special, fried oyster, pork chop, and chocolate pate for dessert. The food was delicious. It was definitely a satisfying meal and great night out in Victoria.

Review from Marc P.
Their artisan cheese plates and good selection of wine make for a great afternoon or late night dinner snack. My wife and I had the 4-cheese plate as an appetizer to our dinners, and it was excellent (the quince jam that came with it was absolutely amazing); the only down side was that we finished it before our dinners arrived, and it had filled us up quite a bit by the time dinner arrived. If I had to do it over again, I would specify to the server to put our dinner order in straight away, along with the order for the cheese plate, and bring them out as they come in (apparently our server was waiting for us to finish the cheese plate before she put the order in).
For dinner, I had their trout special (not the nicoise that is on their regular menu), and it was some of the best seafood I have ever tasted. My wife had the mussels, which were good.
I'd recommend making rezzies, as it was quite packed when we got there at 8:30pm on a Saturday. -

Didn't eat at many restaurants in Victoria, so I don't have much to compare this with in the City, but I was not really impressed with this restaurant. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad. It was just "A-OK".
My waitress forgot put in my appetizer order, so we had to wait for that. The food was pretty good, but not outstanding. It had a good atmosphere and comfortable, except for the sun that was shining off the building next door right into my wife's eyes for the first 30 minutes of our dinner.
Not sure where else would have been better, but was an OK restaurant. -
Review from Ernesto G.
Lamb Chops with Pulled-Pork Ravioli on a bed of kale! This is the best dish I have had so far in Victoria.
I'm enjoying my short trips to Victoria and looking forward to discovering all the great restaurants the city has to offer. Came to Bon Rouge one night a few weeks ago for dinner with my boss and we were both blown away with this dish; great recommendation by our server that night. My boss and I were tired from work, so we left the decision about what to have for dinner to our server and his recommendation definitely did not disappoint.
The lamb was pan-seared with some fleur de sel, but not overcooked and placed above a bed of kale, which was cooked with garlic. Accompanying this beautiful combination was a few pieces of ravioli. Delicious.
I would come back to Bon Rouge for sure for this dish. -
Review from Chef J.
I usually don't care much about service as long as it's not noticeable. We could see from our waiter's frantic pace around the room that she was overworked--too many tables with too many people on a Friday night. She was pleasant and was trying.
Then came the martini. Microscopic. When I asked where the rest of it was--it was two ounces she told me, in a 5 or 6 ounce glass--she said since I didn't have it shaken, it looked small. What? Was the rest supposed to be filled with cold water from the melted ice? Did she and the bartender confuse straight up with neat--not chilled over ice? I rarely send stuff back, but that went right back.
When we finally got bread, it was crap. Looked good on the outside but the crumb was spongy and homogenous and the crust was like grocery store French bread.
After 50 minutes, we got our first course--the sauteed prawns. They were quite good. The grilled romaine salad was also yummy. So was the trout salade Nicoise.
The food was worthy. If not for the mini-martini and the huge waits for food, we would have been pretty happy. Won't be back. -

This was an excellent choice for our date night out. I won't go on about all the details of each dish, they've mostly been covered here before, let's just say that everything was delicious, we enjoyed every item and course (including the huge charcuterie plate for two).
Our server was very pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful, all the courses came out timed perfectly. We never felt over attended but also never felt abandoned. If I had to have one complaint it would be that I thought the wine pairing that was offered with my chicken Provence was overbearing flavour wise.
The restaurant started off quite quiet around 6:30 but was packed 40 minutes later. The décor is appropriate. We were stunned to watch them seat a 24 top.
Note to self: when ordering a "twist on an old fashioned martini" with blue cheese stuffed olives, try to remember in my semi inebriated state, that it is still just straight vodka with olives.
We were too full for dessert this time, but bon rouge has definitely earned a spot on my date night restaurants to return to list. -

What a cute restaurant! Its a pretty small restaurant, but in a cozy way. We got seated at a little table with comfy arm chairs.
He ordered the steak deal ($29 for an appetizer, steak and dessert). The prawns with tomato sauce appetizer was really tasty! The steak was...well, steak! For dessert, we picked the pear upside down cake and it was really good!
I got the lemon and sage halibut on risotto. It was good, but mostly plain.
Our server was nice, but she was so busy that it took her a long time to come back to us towards the end.
Overall, I really liked this place and would go back if I ever go back to Victoria. -
Review from Paula K.
It was one of those days... we were tired from a long day of travel, it was pouring rain, we didn't want to go far for dinner and room service was not an option. As I was looking out the window of our room (at the Magnolia Hotel & Spa) I noticed candles flickering in a restaurant directly across the street. It was Bon Rouge and it was a great find for a cold rainy Victoria evening.
I had the Halibut and it was perfect. Served with sauteed parsley and green pea lentils the fish was cooked perfectly and had great flavor.
They have a nice selection of local BC and Canadian cheese, I would highly recommend the cheese plate. We had the WASABI VERDELAIT, ISLAND BRIE and the BLEU BENEDICTIN
Wine selection by the glass was limited but again, a nice selection of BC wine.
Great decor, they were playing french films on the TV's, they have a cute bread cutting station and the bar on it's own looks like a nice place for a glass of wine. -

Met a friend at Bon Rouge for lunch yesterday, and we had a very enjoyable time. The restaurant has friendly, helpful staff and an interesting menu, and for a nice lunch spot the prices are reasonable. I choose the Tuesday special which was beef bouguignon, and it was exceptional. My friend had the soup and sandwich special and also really enjoyed his meal.
The atmosphere is relaxed and fun, and if it had been a warmer day, we definitely would have choosen to sit in the very nice outdoor patio.
I will return to Bon Rouge, and plan to take my wife there for dinner soon. -
Review from Thai D.
Me and the lady had dinner here tonight. This is the first time she's been to a french restaurant, and she loved it! I've been to a few, and this is one of the best I've ever had. I had the tenderloin medallions with beets, quinoa, spinach, arugula, herb pesto, roasted hazelnuts, and shaved parmesan with their french onion soup as an appetizer while my girlfriend had the Prix Fixe with the steak frites and sauteed prawns. Everything very delicious with very filling portions. That was some of the best french onion soup I've had, and the steak frites was very tender and flavorful. The cotes de rhone red wine complemented the meal exquisitely. We had creme brulee for dessert, which was also amazing. Our waitress, Carrie, was extremely friendly and gave great service. We sat outside in the patio next to the fireplace. The restaurant has a classy and romantic ambiance without being too Chez Bourgie,
We'll definitely come back the next time we visit Victoria. -

I looove this place!
I went in with a bunch of friends around 11am. Promtly seated and had great service from the staff. They had the sandwich special where you get a biiiig sandwich and a soup for $7! ! and I had a cup of coffee, the bill came to under $13 for brunch. I say that is a really good deal.
The decor was amazing, they had a mirrors set behind the table so I can look at people's facial expressions without turning my face! haha.
The color and lighting in the room was warm and I would love to come back here for brunch/dinner next time I am in Victoria! -

Great food, good service. The cheese platter was nice, the burger a little bit boring.

Review from Hilary G.
I would give this place 3.5 stars. The atmosphere is definitely cozy but it was way too warm in the restaurant to the point of being uncomfortable. We shared the prawns done in a citrus butter sauce which were quite good but not necessarily worth the price for the size. I ordered the Sooke trout which was quite tasty but it was very disappointing to see a monstrous salad beneath it and maybe 6 tiny pieces of potatoes hidden underneath. The menu says nothing about salad and said it comes with a potato hash and green beans. So much for that. My husband enjoyed his salmon but the lentil cake was way too salty. This place has potential but didn't quite live up to expectations.

A truly great dining experience: great food, great service and phenomenal atmosphere.
We walked by this place the first time because of the prices but after walking all around downtown Victoria, we came back... and were really glad we did! They get high marks for pretty much everything but our waiter was a cut above. He was honest about what food was great and what was pretty good... he listened to our preferences and helped us choose a killer meal... great local beers, and desert... oh desert... -

The ambiance of this place is romantic and yet laid back. Sit outdoor on the heated patio! One of my favorite places I have traveled too!!! -

Came here looking for lunch and the food and room are worthy of a 4. The mishap that cost it a star was that the frittata my girlfriend ordered was extremely salty and while they did remake it correctly the 2nd time around it took quite a while and nothing was done about it on the bill.
I'll assume the problem with the frittata was a mistake as the rest of the experience was quite good. My farmer's benedict was very good - rich, decadent French brunch and the atmosphere was very nice as well.
I'd definitely try Bon Rouge for dinner and hope to avoid any issues the 2nd time around. -

I've heard good things about Bon rouge.....but I cannot share the same
My husband & I had a date night out from the kids and decided to try and made late reservations.
While it was dine-around, the restaurant was slammed. The waitress was polite and apologized for the delay but nonethless we waited 30 minutes for a beer and martini, and when our appys arrived the prawns were cold and pork belly chared And burnt......brutal.....and the presentation was crap!
So....at 9 pm we walked accross the Street to prime steakhouse and had an amazing meal....... -
Review from Michelle R.
I spotted an ad for this place on the Clipper Magazine. The 3-course pre fixed meal caught my attention: an appetizer, entree and dessert for $29. The reviews on Yelp was not bad, so I figured.. why not? A bonus was they're an http://Opentable.com place (100 points!)
My husband ordered the pre fixed bouillabaisse and I got the pre fixed steak frites. Our starter was not the mussels (as one person posted). I guess they changed it to 4 prawns in a spicy tomato sauce. It was not too spicy (good kick) and tasty.
The bouillabaisse my husband ordered looked wonderful The sauce was not overly fishy nor salty. I kept sneaking my bread into his bowl and thought "gee, i should have ordered it instead of my steak".
My steak was good. Well, its a steak. It was cooked perfectly, and they cook it over an open flame, so it had a nice smokey grilled taste. The frites were nice, hot and fresh. No complaints.
For dessert, my husband had the Apple Tart a la mode. It looked rather heavy to me (although he finished it without complaint), while I ordered a Creme Brulee with a dark chocolate truffle on the side. Again, no complaints for me.
Would I come back here? Yes.
Did I like the pre fixed menu? Yes. And I was glad we were there on a Sunday, when they offered the pre fix Sunday to Thursday.
The reason they did not get a 5 star was: the food was good and tasty but not orgasmic, and the service was just ok. We had to wait a bit for our drink order, and even then it took a while to get it. It did seem there were only 2 wait persons + the manager helping, so perhaps they were understaffed? I understand its "french" to take your time to dine, but I also do not like waiting 10-15 min for water. -

My all time favourite place in British Columbia. After being asked if we wanted a Mimosa, and yes they had seating for children, and yes they could create child portions - I asked if they could open up in Vancouver too. Our charming waitress laughed, as this was the second time that morning that she'd been asked the same question.
Vancouver is really lacking the charm and warmth of this restaurant. Vancouver needs it. The decor, the ambience, the genuinely warm service, the delicious and freshly prepared produce and exquisite french menu, made Bon Rouge Bistro the place we will return to next time we go to Victoria.
Thank you Bon Rouge Bistro & Boulangerie for a very enjoyable experience. -

Fantastic French restaurant! There is lots to choose from on this mouth watering menu. It can be hard to make a dining decision. They offer a nice $29 prix fixe option. The night we dined it came with prawns, steak frites and a dessert of choice.
Our server Ryan, could not have been better. Helpful and knowledgeable about the cuisine and the preparation.
A nice warm and cozy atmosphere complete the picture.
A BIG thumbs up! -
Review from Alex K.
Great ambience, delicious food. If you come here mid week when they are not too busy, Tony (one of the nicest waiters ever) might even offer you a substitution option for their famous $29 deal dinner option (which by the way is the best deal on the menu and comes with prawns, seafood stew or steak with fries and your choice of desert. Tony recommended Apple Caramel pie with ice cream on top and it was delicious.
We also got a few drinks and extra appetizer (Escargot - yum) for a total of about $50 per person before tip.
Overall, a great experience and worth the price, with only tiny issue of medium-rare steak being more "medium" than expected so you might consider going one lower to get that red-pinky perfection.
Overall easy 5 stars with great service and food to back it up. -

Gorgeous, charming French bistro in downtown Victoria.
Here you will find a decent selection of velvety wines by the glass and bottle, delectable cheeses, small plates and main courses to suit every appetite and diet, divine desserts, luscious decor and elegant music.
I found the servers slightly cool and inattentive for my tastes. When I relayed my experience to my lover, he said, "well, they're French". Except, they weren't. Not enough to keep me away however - my perfectly-portioned baked macaroni and cheese in Mornay sauce with a crumbly topping was all the apology I required. Bon Rouge, consider yourself forgiven. I will return. -

This dining experience was one of the highlights of our Pacific NW trip. We were here on a Monday night and we chose to sit on their outdoor patio. GORGEOUS!! There were two fireplaces, and beautiful flowers everywhere. We felt like we were dining in a garden.
The service was the best we had on the trip, and that's saying a lot, because we were continually impressed by the NW. It was late Monday night, there was only 1 other table, and our server couldn't have been lovelier. We kept asking if we were keeping her, and she sincerely encouraged us to stay and take our time.
The artisan cheese plate was outstanding, and we both loved our wine. My husband had the trout, and then he also had the trout at l'ecole the following night. They were both wonderful, but he said Bon Rouge's interpretation was slightly better. We had the best time. -
Review from Terence L.
Came here with my wife and 1 year old. First off, I'd say its definitely not the place to bring your kids! Its a very romantic restaurant tho :)
We ordered the 3 course meal which was $29/person. We had prawn appetizers which were tasty and delicious. The main course was actually the most disappointing but still good. I had an 8 oz. steak which was on a bed of french fries and onion rings. I barely touched the french fries and onion rings, but the steak was enough for me since I wasn't extremely hungry anyway. My wife had bouillabaisse, basically a seafood medley in a broth which wasn't bad, but nothing to rave about. The dessert was the best though! I had the creme brulee which was best I've had and my wife had the chocolate caramel cake with raspberry sauce. It looked like a big hostess ding dong but when we tasted it, it was VERY yummy! -

Nice place with excellent food, lots of seating options (including outside) and a not-too-large menu.
Kudos for allowing kids.
The steak frites prix fixe option is a steal at $29.
Happy, happy. -
Review from Charlie R.
Wow. Not sure what everyone else was raving about but I have to say that the food at this place was underwhelming at best.
When we got there, I was happy to find that the atmosphere was warm, pleasant and welcoming. Upscale without being off putting. Additionally, the service was excellent. Nice, helpful waitstaff who made good suggestions and was friendly.
My wife started with a French Onion soup that she really liked. It had bacon in it which she said is different (I don't eat meat other than fish). It was satisfying and what she wanted. I started with 6 oysters that were subtle in their flavor but obviously fresh and quite good.
The mains though were completely bland, especially considering their price. One of us had the bouliabase and the other a Trout Nicoise. Both were lackluster flavor and nothing special. Not bad, just.... boring.
With drinks we paid over $100 CDN (incl. tip) which was WAY too much.
Dissapointed.
