We came to Bing Sheng on a friend's recommendation. We looked the dinner so much that we came back for dim sum lunch. Here is a run down of what we liked and disliked about Bing Sheng.
From our dinner experience, we liked the vast selection on their menu. There are good variety of beef, pork, chicken, seafood, and vegetable dishes. They had the roasted quail on special which was comparable to other "best" we have tried. Their signature, award-winning dish of streamed fresh tilapia on egg was very unique. Although their pricing is not the cheapest, the quality and taste of the food provided good value for the money paid. As a bonus, they showed the hockey game on their two large flat screen TV which provided for a great atmosphere. Watching a Canucks hockey game in a Chinese restaurant is not a norm!
When we returned to Bing Sheng for dim sum lunch, we made a reservation knowing it will be busy. To our disappointment, we still had to wait for over 30 minutes to get a table. I guess such a wait is the norm for this place. Once we were seated, service was brisk. Our order was taken on a checklist sheet and was promptly served. However, our waiter did not come back to refill our tea or take away the empty dishes until we flagged him down. Again, this may be the norm for this busy place. However, I must say the dim sum dishes were one of the best I have tasted in years. I can easily forgive the lack of service with the incredible taste.
I give Bing Sheng 4 stars only because of the shortcomings I experienced. This place can easily be a 5 star place. I will definitely return here and recommend it to friends. -

Three capital letters, MSG....and copious amounts at that.
Steamed pork dumpling - acceptable
Steamed prawn dumpling - prepared by mixing a "paste" with amounts of chopped prawns, with PLENTY of MSG - NOT acceptable. Good dim sum places give you the entire prawn.
Custard tart - good. The only thing I found good
Steamed spareribs - acceptable
Steamed runny custard bun - they must have used a salted duck egg to prepare the custard. It was not good. Everyone who tried it put it down after one bite.
Lotus leaf wrapped glutinous rice with chicken. I did not try this but the people who did.. same result as the runny custard bun.
Deep fried chinese donut wrapped in rice pastry - very acceptable
BBQ pork bun - it was off. They put something in it, what it was, I could not pinpoint. It tasted funny. I had one small bite and that was it.
Deep fried fritter with pork. Usually this is one my favorites, but not here. Same comment as the BBQ pork bun.
Preserved egg and lean pork congee - acceptable. I did not eat this but the people who did, found it ok. The condiments that came with it was OVER salted.
Service was standard, and the food came quickly. Not too much issue here.
Cannot say that I am a fan. I would go to other places if I had a choice. -

For my area of dim sum eating, I have to rate this one the tops compared to the rest of the hood. Everytime I come here, the food is top notch, and maybe it is the stuff I order. Right across from First Avenue Market, this place used to house many types of restaurants, and I think finally they have one here in 'Bing Sheng' that will be staying. The parking situation of this place is the dark nasty underground parking (don't go there) or parking along Renfrew Street!
The restaurant itself may not look like much outside, but the inside has been done up as nicely as they could for a place like this. Comfortable seating, big tables, bright lights, and a sense of clean. This is not a kart pushing dim sum joint, so you will be getting the Chinese only, or English only ordering sheets, which means there is no cold dim sum plates floating around, as when you order is when they cook.
The dim sum hours go right up till 3:00 PM, and it empties out near 2, so if you do not like to battle it out with everyone else, try to go there later. The prices are standard for the type of food quality you are getting here, and it shows once it hits the table, hot and fresh is what you get. The XO pan fried turnip cake, and the spare ribs with rice rolls are really good here, along with other things. I have been here once for dinner, and the quality also shows during the night, so no need to be hesitant about stepping your foot into this place.Listed in: Great Dim Sum Joints in the…

I've eaten here twice and I was disappointed with the food. Very salty!!!!!!
The first time I came here was for dim sum and I was happy with the food. I don't usually care about service when I'm at a Chinese restaurant or at any restaurant. It's always so busy and they do their best to cater to everyone. I've basically learned to order quick and fast.
Last night, I went again. This time it was for dinner. We never tried their dinner so my family and I gave it a try. The food came out instantly after we ordered. I could taste trouble once the first dish came out. It was salty. The next dish, same thing. Out of 7 dishes that we ordered, only one was not salty and that was the boiled watercress.
A few at the table asked me why I stopped eating, "are you on a diet??".
How can I eat anymore when the food is so salty! If I kept on eating, I might just end up with heartburn. Moments later after the conversation, my stomach began to hurt. So pretty much for the remainder of the dinner, I just sat quietly.
I had a little bit of red bean dessert and it was so sweet. I had a spoonful and that was it. I gave the rest to my mom.
This restaurant is needs a new chef or more people like me to tell them to ease up on the salt. -

Came here for dinner w/my parents-in-law. I couldn't think of any good restaurant around this area.
Food were quite salty!! But the portion were huge!! I would say with such reasonable price with portion, it's ok. Quantity not quality of food. -

Not sure how long this place has been there, but I've always just gone to the mall across the street.
Parking is all along the street. It wasn't bad at all, but it was a weekday after all.
The decor isn't bad, and had a bit of the authentic dirty feel. Nice chairs and carpeted floor.
The turnip cake was a bit unusual in that it was served as deep fried squares. I actually thought it was agedashi tofu (I didn't do the ordering).
Much of the dimsum wasn't as oily as many other places. This does make many of the items a bit bland (why do bad things have to taste so good), but for those who value their hearts, this is not bad thing. Many other places are too heavy on the seasonings/MSG.
The fried squid did look peculiar as it looked like someone had opened a highlighter over it. But the pieces were large.
Everything else tasted pretty standard. Oh, and the food came quickly which is always nice. They use those Scantron sheets. The items look around the $4 range, which is not the cheapest, but meh.
I'm not sure if I'd be back anytime soon, but it's a nice alternative to No.1 across the street. -

Morning dim-sum comes with free Chinese newspaper.
You'll see mostly older gentlemen from the neighborhood sipping tea and reading newspaper. Dim sum is ok, not great but not bad either. For dinner they have a good steamed chicken pieces with a mixture of chinese herbs and susages. -

I enjoy going here for Dim Sum. Don't come here before 1pm as you would have to wait in line for a while. They have the best chicken wings. The dishes are in the bigger size and you can tell that the quality is way better than No. 1. Most of the staff are really nice except for one guy who is always grumpy. If you order the wrong thing and you want to return it, they will not listen to you and say "sorry it's been cooked/steamed". But if you get the manager then you'll have a different story.
The ambiance is alright. They always have infomercials playing on the TV or old Chinese films. They do not do carts which I prefer since I rather order my food. Their prices are on the higher side but not as high compare to other dim sum places in the west side and downtown. I'm a regular here. -

On a sunny Sunday afternoon, I took my family here for dimsum. It was -6 and everyone tried to huddle into the small "waiting area" of the restaurant. We waited for about 20 minutes and finally got ourselves a table that was right by the window.
In terms of food, we ordered the fried taro dumpling, chinese sponge cake (ma lai go), rice rolls with prawns, fried rice, Chiu Chao dumplings, chicken buns and steamed glutinous rice.
The fried taro dumpling was not extremely hot; it was just warm. It was probably just sitting on a tray for a long time. The chinese sponge cake had milk custard between each layer which other restaurants don't. Quite delicious. Although the rice rolls with prawns were a smaller portion than what we would have at other restaurants, the rice rolls were quite "smooth" (say it in Cantonese). Moving on was the Chiu Chao dumplings, they were quite different. They had a cinnamon smell to it and the dough was quite chewy which is a bonus! You usually get dumplings that has the dough which can be broken easily and all the stuff from the inside falls out. Chewy and "elastic-y" dough...really good!
In terms of the ambience, when you walk into the restaurant, it gives you an "Imperial" feeling with the wall designs and chairs. However, the appearance of the restaurant on the outside didn't look that appealing. If they designed those Chinese architectural roofs like those Chinese pagoda roofs, that would have been cool. It didn't seem like they invested their money on the outer appearance. On the other hand, one thing I liked was their teapots; they were the 19th Century Qing Dynasty Blue and White Porcelain teapots. It would have been nice if our tea cups were like that...a matching set. Anyway, my two cents is that if they want to FULLY give their customers the feeling of the any dynasty, they should go full-throttle on their utensils (not just their teapots), chairs, and outer appearance. End of story.
I give this place 3.5 stars out of 5. -

Pretty good for dim sum, especially for the area where there really isn't much options. Food came out fast.

My partner's parents took us here today for dim sum. Warning -- it's a popular place for dim sum, so arrive early or plan to wait in line.
We arrived at 11:30am and were lucky enough to grab a table. The place has your typical Chinese decor with tables close together. The dim sum menu was all in Chinese so uncertain how a non-Chinese person would do here.
You place your order for dim sum (thank god, I hate waiting for carts) and it arrived quickly and piping hot. The size of the dim sum seemed much larger than elsewhere ... seriously, one piece of siu mai was like twice the size as normal (and tasted great).
We had siu mai, beef rice roll, doughnut with rice roll, tripes, beef balls, tofu skin chicken, chicken feet, deep fried tofu and some sort of vegetarian dumpling. All of it was delicious! Service was quick and kept our tea pot filled without having to ask.
Will definitely go back soon! -

It's a pretty new joint in the neighbourhood and much, much better than the competition across the street in No1. I HATE No1. Will have to Yelp that later.
This place is reasonably priced, definitely not a hole in the wall, and the dishes come out pretty fresh and decent sized. Service is not your typical crappy, Asian attitude. They're definitely aiming for a higher end clientele in a predominantly working-class Chinese 'hood. Like I said, it's a nice alternative from everything close by! -
