Billingsgate has not only an amazing fish market, but a delicious restaurant with probably the best fish in Edmonton. I found myself wondering how on earth land-locked Edmonton had such fresh and delicious seafood! My coworkers and I went out for lunch and all four of us were impressed with the value, quantity of food, the variety of seafood and how our various fish orders were all cooked to perfection. We will definitely be returning at our next staff lunch party!

Clean. Fresh. Delicious. Friendly. If you were thinking the only thing that could make this place better was a giant lighthouse, look up, way up, and you'll see some really neat decor!

I've heard good things about Billingsgate Seafood Market in the past, so when a group of friends wanted to give it a try, I was excited to finally give it a shot.

The seafood selection in the shop is great, the fish is fresh and the prices, although higher, are definitely a get-what-you-pay-for.

The restaurant, however, left much to be desired. Because the seafood is so fresh and of good quality, I was expecting to have my socks knocked off when it came to dinner. The clam chowder was tasty, but definitely nothing special. I have had better at Ceilis or Red Lobster. The fish and chips were nothing to write home about, and the salad was bland, served with a dressing I didn't care for,

If you're in the mood for seafood, it may be better just to purchase the fish here and cook it at home.

I ordered a halibut burger and was surprised to receive a piece of breaded halibut, plunked on a thick dry white bun with no butter or mayo, although there was a slice of tomato. I was surprised to see the halibut coated with a rather greasy breadcrumb coating, since it was already in a bun;. When I scraped the coating off, there was very little halibut. When i asked if I could have a small salad instead of the fries, I was told yes, but then my bill would have been three dollars higher. Most restaurants allow a person to substitute salad for fries with no additional charge. I won't be back.

Well, we have been going to Billingsgate in Edmonton just about every Friday for dinner for the last 15 years, and unfortunately, last Friday was the last time. The restaurant has been changed to a "McDonalds" style - line up to order and pay for your food, then someone slaps in down in front of you when its ready. The restaurant used to have an ambience and felt like upper class dining. Now it just feels like McDonalds. Such a shame that some manager thought this was a good idea. Now Edmonton no longer has a decent fish restaurant, and no, we do not eat at the lower class' Red Lobster either! Oh well, goodbye.

I've been meaning to write this review for awhile now.  I've actually visited Billinsgate twice recently - first with my husband and toddler daughter and again with my mother.

First, let me say that I've been on the hunt for Edmonton's Best Fish 'n Chips for several months now & I've even created a List documenting the places I have tried.  This all started during my last pregnancy when I had a crazy hunkering for seafood!  I'm originally from Seattle and miss the fresh coastal seafood.

And I must say that HANDS DOWN this place is by far the best in quality, freshness, price, and atmosphere!  I could not believe how flaky and tender the fish was... but I'm getting ahead of myself.

On the first visit my husband and I ordered an appetizer of Mussels in Pernod & Cream:
Fresh steamed mussels with Pernod cream sauce, tomatoe & onion served with Foccacia
    Lunch $10.95
    Dinner $11.95 / Meal $19.95

The mussels were absolutely AMAZING!  The best I have had in Edmonton and ranking right up there with the best I've had even back home on the coast.  The Foccacia was light and fresh and the sauce and herbs with the mussels were perfect.  I couldn't have imagined it any better save for that they served me 1 closed mussel which is a HUGE no-no (and especially at a seafood restaurant).

Next I had the Coconut Lemongrass Seafood Stir-fry:
Clams, mussels & shrimp with vegetables in a coconut lemongrass and green curry sauce.
    $14.95

The seafood was exceptionally fresh and the flavors and curry were perfect - enough to be unique but not overpowering at all.  I do wish there had been more seafood - for price comparison I thought my husband got more seafood for his dollar with his entree.  Unfortunately there wasn't enough sauce to even cover half of my noodles so it isn't a dish I would repeat simply because I didn't enjoy "plain noodles."   We did have to wait approximately 30 minutes after our appetizer for our entrees to come which I found quite odd.  Not sure if one of our dishes had to be redone or if one of our dishes takes a long time... but our trip took 1.5 hours from sitting down to completion which is pretty long for a casual lunch.

My husband ordered the 2 Piece Lighthouse Fish and Chips
    Made with Pacific Halibut filets:
    1 Piece $9.95 / 2 Piece $14.95

This was absolutely the BEST Halibut we had at any of the Fish 'n Chips restaurants in Edmonton.  The Halibut was firm - obviously fresh - and thick pieces.  The quality was much like a Halibut steak - not end pieces or left overs.  The batter was light and crispy - not heavy and perfectly suited the fish.  I truly don't think I have ever had better Halibut    in a Fish 'n Chips entree in my life!  And the price is right on point!  Their price for 2 pieces is less than the other restaurants we visited and the quality was better and the portion larger!  My husband opted for Sweet Potato fries and they did not disappoint!  Two big thumbs up!  The only complaint - my hubby thought the coleslaw was boring.

We had our toddler daughter and opted for the Children's King Crab Leg - that's right!  An entire King Crab Leg and fries for $9.99 I believe.  You can't even add a King Crab leg anywhere else in town to your entree for that price!  And it was EXCELLENT!  She only tried a bite or two, but I'm not complaining :-)

*There are coupons in the SUTP coupon book for either 10% off at the fish counter or a free appetizer with entree purchase*

    2 Great Big Thumbs Up!

The only reason I am giving it 4 stars rather than 5 is my closed mussel and the long wait for the food on this visit.

Pictures of all food items are posted!

I'd driven by this place several times over the years - this cool building on 104 St. that looks like a lighthouse. I've never had much occasion to check it out, though, as I live on the north side so it is way out of my way for just getting a piece of fish or two.

However, we were getting sick of getting average fish from the grocery store. We've only bought fish from Billingsgate once so far, but what a difference! It is definitely worth the extra money for something that is so much fresher and tastier.

There is also a restaurant there, which we finally checked out over the weekend. We ordered mussels (appetizer size), I had the haddock and chips with sweet potato fries, one piece, and my husband had the haddock burger with regular fries. Delicious, delicious, delicious. Even though the mussels were appetizer size as opposed to meal size, there were so many of them! They were in this tomatoey, garlicky, yummy sauce, with bread to wipe up the sauce. The sweet potato fries were some of the best I've had, and the fish was great.

We showed up at 10 minutes to 4pm, and the two ladies at the counter had a little debate about whether to give us the lunch or dinner menu. They gave us both, and we ordered off the lunch. Prices for the same things were cheaper. More items on the dinner menu. Our waitress was nice and upbeat, although seemed like she was rushing us a bit (ordering, bringing the bill). One thing I didn't like was that she asked us if we wanted extra bread, and regular or sweet potato fries. When we got the bill, both of these things were about $2 extra and she didn't mention it. It may have said so on the menu, but I didn't read the entire thing. It would've been nice of her to say so.

All in all, it looks like I might be making the trek over to the south side a little more often.

Note: Hours for the store and cafe are different. Check the website.

I'd long been told that Billingsgate was THE place to go in Edmonton for seafood. Not only do they supply many of the area's restaurants with fresh treats from the oceans, but they also have a pretty excellent retail store and restaurant located beneath the lighthouse on Calgary Trail.

However, being a DISTRIBUTOR of seafood is definitely not the same as being a seafood restaurant, and while I have no doubt Billinggsgate excels at the former, they are only so-so at the latter.

Don't go here expecting to experience the cutting edge of fish and seafood prep, but go here confident in the fact that they will know how to do a decent steak and lobster.

Otherwise, the room feels a little like a cafeteria - all substance, no style. And that's fine if all you want is favour. But don't come to Billingsgate in search of ambiance. Instead, buy a few fresh cuts and bring them home to prepare your own outstanding seafood meal.

Billingsgate is an awesome place for purchasing any kind of fish products. They fly in fresh seafood regularly and it is always good quality. The prices may be higher but you get what you pay for. If making sushi is your thing then getting the freshest salmon and tuna is a must and you will find it here. They have freezers with frozen goods as well but I have not tried this when you can buy most fresh.
We have ordered the clam chowder in the restaurant and it is very good.

Everything was going well until the bill came. Went to go pay at the cashier and after paying our waitress came to the cashier not knowing I was nearby. When she saw the tip I left (10%. Sorry it wasn't the customary 15%, I'm a single income earner) she remarked to the cashier "That's it?!". I was heartbroken with that comment and left feeling poor. I won't be back.

Best fish and chips I've ever had ANYWHERE, and that includes numerous restaurants on both the east and west coast. The fish is always expertly fried, and never, ever greasy. The F&C are so good, in fact, that I've never tried anything else.

This place is THE place to buy seafood in Edmonton.

Billingsgate has a great selection of anything from the sea. My boyfriend I went here looking for lobster, but left disappointed because of the price. I would love to shop here more, but the prices are pretty high (at least for lobster - I know it is expensive anyways, but I have found better prices elsewhere). My mom is a hardcore entertainer, and she shops here all the time when she is hosting dinner parties.

I heard that there is also an restaurant in this market, but I have never tried it.

Food is overpriced and the menu online is not the same as the menu in the cafe.  The food is the same but the prices are vastly different.  False advertising. Not impressed.

I drive by this market/resto all the time and decided to give it a shot last month when we got a group-buy coupon. My wife and I were impressed by the amount of fresh seafood that was on display. We didn't have reservations on an early Saturday night but they were able to seat us fairly quickly. We wanted to both get steamed lobsters but they wanted both market price AND a cooking fee of approximately $20 - not sure why this extra charge is necessary so we passed on paying this surcharge. Instead, we went with the seafood platter for 2 which came with lobster, shrimp, halibut, scallops, snow crab, mussels and clams. The shrimps were wonderful ... the snow crab/mussels/clams were satisfactory... the fish and scallops were overcooked ... the lobster tails tasted a bit freezer burned and overcooked. Considering the price tag was $70, I thought it was terrible value for money. In addition, I was disappointed in the seafood quality considering this was supposed to be "the place" to go in Edmonton for fresh seafood. Will not be returning.
